Overall, People’s United Community Foundation awarded $883,000 in grants to 144 nonprofit organizations in the communities it serves in Connecticut, New York, Massachusetts, Vermont, New Hampshire and Maine, during its third grant cycle this year. Smithtown High School East’s girls basketball team spent November 22nd at the Stop and Shop in Smithtown collecting nonperishable food items and turkeys to be donated to
Island Harvest Foundation for the Thanksgiving holiday. In just four hours, the team collected 778 pounds of non-perishable food items, 25 frozen
turkeys and more than $450 in donations. Island Harvest will distribute the donations to local families in need throughout the holiday season.

Smithtown Central School District’s School of Business in the Career and Technical Education Department, in cooperation with the Smithtown Industry Advisory Board, held its 21st Annual Business Olympics on November 19th. Fifty seven teams consisting of more than 250 students from Smithtown High Schools East and West competed in this year’s event, which was themed “Get Fit: Corporate Fitness Challenge.” The teams were tasked with creating a marketing campaign for a month promoting a “Fitness Challenge” for a company with proceeds donated to
a charity of their choice. All student teams were required to have a Google Slide presentation, a month of wellness events, a print ad, a public service announcement and a marketing plan. More than 75 judges – including community businesspeople, Smithtown High School alumni, district office, district administrative staff and members of the Smithtown Industry Advisory Board – participated in the event and judged the students on their overall presentation. This year’s winning was the Fitness Masters, consisting of Robert Grasso, Darian KaneStolz, Nicole Sancilio
and Victoria Tiranno. The Fitness Masters focused their attention on conducting actual market research. They created a month long fitness challenge for Citibank with daily activities, such as: Master Monday, ToneUp Tuesday, What to Eat Wednesday, Teamwork Thursday, Framework Friday, Seminar Saturday and Sunrise Sunday. The culminating event was an Office Olympics, where employees would form teams and compete in various wellness activities throughout the day and pay an entrance fee to be donated to the Shape-Up America charity.

Reason for the Season By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Tradition: the transmission of customs or beliefs from generation to generation, or the fact of being passed on in this way. And so closes another Thanksgiving, filled with family, food and fond memories sure to be reflected upon in the coming years. By the time you read this, most of society will have already moved on to Christmas shopping and decorating and planning their next round of feasting and festivities. For me, as the clock strikes midnight, signaling the dawn of “Black Friday” and the close of autumnal activities, once and for all, I choose to savor this particular occasion just a bit longer. The essence of Thanksgiving is, after all, the true spirit of any holiday season
– or at least it should be. Too often, we become so caught up in the commercial clichés that we fail to truly appreciate these special moments. Just earlier today, as my own family reminisced upon occasions gone by, the recurring theme was family, friends and loved ones. The cast of characters may change from year to year, but the sentiment remains the same. While every holiday may not unfold perfectly from beginning to end – despite the “flawless” façade portrayed by most peoples’ Instagram and Facebook posts – they each hold their own place in the grand scheme of life. Time, and tradition, marches on, whether we like it or not. How we choose to spend that time will dictate the memories we make along the way and the fondness
with which we will recall them years – or perhaps mere months – from now. The hustle and bustle of the holiday season may be a hassle on the surface; but the joy it brings on a much deeper level is well worth the effort. Traditions surely vary from family to family, or even from year to year, as customs naturally evolve over time and take on varying forms. The specific nuances are not important. The togetherness, the process of coming together at this special time of year… that’s what traditions are made of. So before you head out into the fray in search of sale items over these next few weeks, stop to remember the reason we go to all this trouble. That notion should be enough to make the holidays truly happy.

The Smithtown Central School District Board of Education and administration are soliciting feedback from community residents regarding a number of items in relation to the future of the district.
District residents are asked to participate in two short surveys with the goal of building its vision for 2015-2016 and beyond, as well as to assistance in planning for the future. The goals survey and census survey can
be accessed under the “District - Surveys” tab on the district’s website, www.smithtown.k12.ny.us. Native Immersion Fourth-grade students at Tackan Elementary School in the Smithtown Central School District spent November 24th celebrating Native American Day by immersing themselves in numerous activities. After studying a unit on Native Americans of
New York, the students took part in a hands-on learning event. Fourthgraders rotated to different classrooms to explore and create crafts such as dreamcatchers, deer skin symbolic messages and rainsticks. Some students came dressed in Native
American garb to add authenticity to the event. After the crafting lessons were completed, all three fourth-grade classes came together for a powwow. Students learned to chant and used their rainsticks to emulate a rain dance.

Candy Collection St. James Elementary School in the Smithtown Central School District collected more than 450 pounds of candy to be donated to military troops overseas. The school-wide candy drive, spearheaded by
Janet Greenfield’s class, encouraged students to donate their extra Halloween candy. Students wrote letters to the soldiers to be included with the 25 boxes of candy donations, which were sent to Operation Gratitude for

Catching the Code Students at Accompsett Elementary School in the Smithtown Central School District are incorporating technology, computer science and coding into their school day. Led by Accompsett Elementary School Principal Jeanne KullMinarik, faculty and staff
are supporting a worldwide movement to expose students to computer programming using free resources provided by code.org. By implementing Code Studio into the curriculum, Accompsett students are preparing as technology continues to expand throughout all
aspects of life. “We are preparing students for jobs that may not even exist yet,” Mrs. Kull-Minarik said. “In such a short amount of time, we are seeing students empowered, engaged, eager and excited to take their education into their own hands.”
One-of-a-Kind Throughout the week of November 16th, students at St. James Elementary School in the Smithtown Central School District took part in a school-wide mosaic project.
Sponsored by the school’s PTA Cultural Arts Program, the students spent their art classes working alongside local artist Esther Tollen to create a one-of-a-kind tile
mosaic of their historic school building. The 6 x 9 completed project will then be prominently displayed in the school’s lobby.
