mithtown High School East’s Drama Club recently wrapped its production of “The Wizard of Oz.” The cast performed from November 3rd through 5th, with a special senior citizen matinee on November 2nd. In addition, the club hosted a day performance for fifth-graders at Tackan, St. James, Dogwood and Mills Pond elementary schools in the Smithtown Central School District. Congratulations on a job well done!

Great Hollow Middle School in the Smithtown Central School District held an Italian feast celebration on November 17th. As part of the

culmination of their food unit, eighth-graders in Rosemarie Rouse’s Italian classes held a special dinner event. The program included a choral singing of the Italian national

anthem, individual student performances of musical pieces by Italian artists and composers, a dialogue skit and an Italian bingo (Tombola) game. Food was provided by the parents.

My Buddy Buddy the Betta first entered my life on February 16th, 2015 as a “half-birthday” present to myself, with fingers crossed that this particular foray into the world of pet ownership would fare better than, say, the two carnival goldfish I had adopted the year prior. Little did I know that this little guy – my beautiful, turquoise, delta-finned Buddy – would become exactly that… a friend, a companion, an adopted member of the family, over the next 21 months. Through nearly two years of my life, from holiday gatherings to cozy weekends spent at home, just the two of us, Buddy was a constant. I’m not sure at what point I began to view him as so much more than a pet; but that he was. They say all animals have distinct personalities and characteristics, and Buddy was certainly no exception. Day after day, our routine became such that I swore he recognized me, greeted me, anxiously awaited my arrival home from work. Meal times were met with exuberant fin-waving and flitting to and fro, and the

occasional “betta kisses” on the tip of my finger should I venture too close to the water. Bath times resulted in sulking in the corner, burrowing behind his favorite plant and being downright obstinate when it came time to transfer from his larger, luxurious suite of a tank to his tiny “starter” bowl. Those I told about Buddy initially reacted with skepticism that a mere fish could actually possess almost humanlike qualities. That was, until they met him. It was impossible not to be charmed by this tiny fish with the big fins and the even bigger personality. And boy did he love the attention! It was about six months in that I worked Buddy into my “In Step” column as a “guest columnist,” taking on the role of my spokesfish and taking over the masthead with his “In Swim” moniker. The tremendous feedback I received from readers, the majority of whom were complete strangers, was overwhelming, with some even suggesting the makings of a future children’s book series.

By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Milestones came and went, from his widely celebrated 1st Betta Birthday, to Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Year’s Eve, summer barbeques and everything in between, with Buddy often joining my company in his tiny bowl on the dining room table or setting up shop on the coffee table in front of the television. A better life could not a betta have. Sadly, my little Buddy passed on to fishy heaven just last week. He was a fighter up until the very end, and it was truly devastating to see him go. All pets are irreplaceable, to be sure; but my Buddy holds an extremely special place in my heart, and always will. Thank you to everyone who frequently wrote in to inquire about his wellbeing and for all the support of his guest columns. In this way, he has become somewhat immortalized in print. Life won’t be the same without ya Buddy. Forever my little ﬁnned friend… Love, your Human

Veterans Day is a special time in this country, where we reflect upon and thank those who fought our battles so that we can enjoy the American way of life. On Veterans Day Legislator Leslie Kennedy had the opportunity to take part in the Smithtown Veterans Day Ceremony, and to thank Veterans for their service to this nation. “Many people volunteer their time to help out here or there, but few volunteer

The men and women who volunteer to fight for The United States and vow to uphold the Constitution do so knowing that the time may come when their life is required of them. These men and women are the ultimate heroes; we should thank them every day we wake up in this Great Country” said Legislator Leslie Kennedy.

Throughout her career, Legislator Kennedy has advocated for Veterans as a member of the Veterans and Seniors Committee in the Suffolk County Legislature, working to pass local legislation to help our veterans. attain a certain amount of merit badges, and complete a community service project known as an Eagle Scout Project. For his Eagle Scout Project Michael chose to design and plan a fishing platform on the Nissequogue River that is accessible to those who are

Two Smithtown Central School District students – Madelyn Law from Smithtown Elementary School and Ilysa Sirota from Smithtown High School East –have been named winners for their artwork in the annual 2016 Shanti Peace poster contest. The images designed by Law and Sirota will

be featured in the Shanti Fund’s annual calendar. Both were awarded $146 for their winning designs (the age Ghandi would be if he were alive) by the Shanti Fund organization. Both students were also recently recognized with certificates at a ceremony by Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone. This is the second time Sirota was chosen as

For more than 12 years, volunteers of Shanti Fund have been actively promoting peace through educational programs like their annual peace poster competition. Cool to Be Kind As part of Accompsett Middle School’s “Cool to Be Kind” week from November 14th-18th, students created “These Little Notes” as a means of inspiration for others. “These Little Notes” got its start with two

sisters from Queens who wrote notes and sent care packages to teens and adolescents recovering from depression. It has since branched out to several states with random messages being posted in public places. The idea

is to spread messages of hope to others. During the Thanksgiving break, the notes created at Accompsett Middle School will be delivered to local community organizations and distributed to those in need.

Hands on History Americans of Long Island before the Europeans arrived. Students had their face painted with hematite, dressed in Native American garb and sat on animal skins as they learned about Native American culture. Showing off different animal skins, students learned about how Native Americans used them for hunting and to keep warm.

Using a Native American drill, students made their own necklaces out of slate. They also prepared and tasted their own corn cakes. A touch table featured different artifacts and Native American musical instruments, and students participated in a singalong with the instruments at the end of the program.

Corn Tasting What’s a second-graders favorite type of corn? The students at Branch Brook Elementary School in the Smithtown Central School District put their palates to the test as they participated in a corn tasting on November 21st. After completing their social studies lesson on

Native American culture and learning about how they farmed corn, the students had a chance to taste different forms on corn to choose their favorites. Corn chips, popcorn, cornbread, corn flakes, corn stuffing and even candy corn were all part of the feast. After

trying different items, students graphed which type of corn was their favorite. Teachers gathered the class together to read a book about Thanksgiving and talk about what they are thankful for this holiday season.

Business Olympics Fifty-five teams of more than 230 students from Smithtown Central District took GINGERBREAD TURKEYS - Fourth-graders in Elisabeth Hennessy’s class School at Accompsett Elementary School in the Smithtown Central District have been their companies on the publishing writing pieces about the people they are grateful for in their lives as well road this year as they as their family traditions. This year’s theme was “Business On Wheels” and teams were challenged to create a mobile business to venture capitalists. They had to develop a promotional and marketing campaign for their business as well as a model for their mobile business. All student teams were required to have a Google Slide Presentation, a commercial for their business, promotional materials and a marketing plan for their “business on wheels.”

Team Immerse – Zagham Doora, Harry Jung, Nicholas Leung, Shrey Thaker and Eric Zhang – were named the winners with their virtual reality mobile business. Smithtown Industry Advisory Board members, district administrators and employees, local companies and organizations participated in the event and judged the students on their overall presentation.

Wizard of Oz Smithtown High School East’s Drama Club recently wrapped its production of “The Wizard of Oz.” The cast performed from November 3rd through 5th, with a special senior citizen matinee on November 2nd.

Impressing Colleges

Representatives from 34 colleges and universities from across the country recently visited Nassau BOCES Long Island High School for the Arts (LIHSA) and were impressed with what they saw. This year, for the first time, LIHSA combined its Inter Arts Festival with its annual College Fair, making a profoundly positive first impression on college reps. More than 150 teen artists and their families met with the reps from a number of prestigious colleges and universities including Berkley College of Music, New York Film Academy, University of Cincinnati’s College Conservatory of Music, James Madison University, Carnegie Mellon University, Eastman School of Music and several SUNY schools. Seniors from all five disciplines – art, dance, film, music and theater – demonstrated their talents through a variety of performances that ranged from song and dance solos to jazz ensemble pieces and show-stopping theatrical numbers. Stylized exhibits featured

select artwork and there were exclusive screenings of student films. “LIHSA has such talented students,” said the representative from SUNY Purchase. “It was great being able to see them showcase their work.” A colleague from Stony Brook University enthusiastically agreed. “This was an amazing show of talent. Extraordinary!” “The event was well planned and it was really nice to see the students perform,” said the Muhlenberg College representative. “We hope to attend again next year.” The Long Island University rep was equally impressed: “This is a great way to experience student talent.” At LIHSA, college preparation is serious business and students put a lot of work into it. They are guided through the process every step of the way by their program directors, guidance counselors and teachers, who help them with everything from college applications and essays, to portfolio reviews and prescreening of

performance recordings. Once all the applications have been submitted, the process of individualized scholarship searches begins. Last year, collegebound graduates earned more than $6 million in scholarships, and this year LIHSA plans to surpass that number. “We coordinated the Inter Arts Festival with the College Fair to show the college representatives in attendance the extraordinary talent of our students,” LIHSA Principal Jack Lenson said of the event. “We wanted them to experience first hand why our students should be considered for admission to their schools. The fair is designed to target the needs of our students, allowing them to evaluate their options and make informed decisions about college applications. Deep, strategic thinking goes into all of our programs and events.
