If you determine that your pet is up for the trip, then following some common sense tips will help to ensure that your Thanksgiving Day travels with your furry friend is enjoyable for both of you! Pre-Travel Preparation Healthy Start: The last thing you need is a sick pet when traveling. This means a visit to the vet for a medical checkup and to ensure that your pet is up-to-date with all necessary vaccinations. The veterinarian can also issue a health certificate for your pet. If you and your pet will be traveling across state lines, you must obtain a recent health certificate and a certificate of rabies vaccination. If your plans include traveling with your pet from the United States to Canada, you will need to bring along a certificate issued by a veterinarian that clearly identifies

the animal and certifies that your pet has been vaccinated against rabies during the preceding 36 month period. Be sure to contact the government of the province you plan to visit as each province has its own requirements. Plan for Restraint: Have a plan for how you’re going to properly restrain your pet in your vehicle. This is a crucial element of pet travel that is not taken seriously enough. The reality is that hundreds of pets are injured or even killed each year because they are allowed free reign in cars, trucks, RVs, and SUVs. Even more real is the toll in human life and property damage caused when an “enthusiastic” animal distracts a driver, leading to an accident. Vehicle pet barriers, pet seat belts, pet car seats, and pet travel crates are all excellent ways to keep your pet (and you) safe

when traveling in your vehicle. It’s important to familiarize your pet with the vehicle restraint of choice weeks or months before traveling so that they are comfortable. Temporary ID Tag: In the unfortunate event that your pet runs off while you’re traveling. A temporary identification tag, along with a photo of your pet will help ensure their safe return. Attach a temporary ID tag to your pet’s collar in addition to their permanent tag. Include the address and phone number of where you’ll be staying along with your cell phone number and perhaps your email address. This is one of the most important aspects of traveling with your pet, but also one of the most overlooked. In addition, bring along a current photo of your pet. A photograph will make it easier for others to help

you find your lost pet. Packing Essentials: When packing for your pet include an ample supply of your pet’s food. Don’t rely on stopping along the way to pick up their food or picking it up at your final destination. Their particular brand of food may not be readily available and it is not advisable to introduce your pet to a new brand of food while traveling. Other essentials to pack for your pet include collapsible travel food and water bowls, bedding, litter and litter box, leash, collar and tags, favorite toys, grooming supplies,

a pet first-aid kit and any necessary medications. And of course, be sure to always have an ample supply of water available for your pet. Secure Pet Friendly Accommodations: If you’re planning a long journey and will need to stay in lodging on the way to your final destination, be sure to secure these pet friendly accommodations before you hit the road. DeMarco would like to provide some safety tips that will help everyone have a safe shopping experience. “Whenever people feel stressed and rushed, they can be more vulnerable to crime. These tips offer some basic guidelines to follow to be safer while holiday shopping,” stated DeMarco. Parking Lots: • When walking through parking lots, be aware of your surroundings. • Always park where there is plenty of light between your car and the store. • Keep your car locked and have your keys in hand before you go to your car. • Before leaving your vehicle, make sure there isn’t anything of value in sight, including cell phones, GPS units and holiday purchases. • Parking lots are typically very crowded at the start of the holiday

Senioritis

For decades, high school seniors have been feeling the pressure to succeed from all angles. Towards the middle of their final year of high school, many of these same students develop what is commonly known to be Senioritis. Senioritis can be defined as a general apathy towards school work as the result of continued exposure to stress, anxiety and pressure. What does this actually mean? Seniors basically stop caring about their courses! For nearly 100% of those students affected by the issue, Senioritis results in falling asleep during class. This nap-time results in detentions, failing and absences. All of the stress

that comes with waiting for your SAT score, applying to colleges and hoping for an acceptance letter seems to just fade into the background as the final months tick down. These last few months misleadingly seem to be a little downtime and a resting period between actual high school and college. After slapping their future college’s bumper sticker on their car, many students feel that their struggle is over. These students have done it, they have completed their journey. Not quite; getting accepted is just the first half of the battle. You can’t let your grades slip! Some colleges create the stipulation that even if one’s Grade Point Average

drops a single letter grade, the acceptance will prove to be null, void and ultimately invalid. This continued expectation is harder still for those students that aced the SAT’s, assumed a loaded schedule and basically busted their humps their entire academic career. The temptation to slack is so great that even the most promising students have been known to fall. This pseudo-sickness has been even known to travel between groups of close friends, as many times the influence is drastic. So what does this mean for your future high school senior? Do not catch Senioritis! The only known cure for Senioritis is a phenomenon known as Graduation.

Pet policies do change some times without notice and accommodations may be limited so it’s recommended that you make reservations in advance. Medical Records: In case of a medical emergency while traveling, it is advisable to bring along your pets medical records along with your vet’s contact information should they be needed for consultation. Hitting The Road No Heads Out the Window: Although many pets find that sticking their head out the window is the best part of the road trip, it’s not safe. Your pet

can easily be injured by flying debris. This should go without saying, but NEVER travel with a pet in the back of a pickup truck. Some states have laws restricting such transport and it is always dangerous. Frequent Pit Stops: Always provide frequent bathroom and exercise breaks. Most travel service areas have designated areas for walking your pet. Be sure to stay in this area particularly when you pet needs a potty break, and of course, bring along a bag to pick up after your pet. When outside your vehicle, make sure that your pet is always on a leash and wearing a collar with a permanent and temporary travel identification tag. Proper Hydration: During your pit stops be sure to provide your pet with some fresh water to wet their whistle.

Occasionally traveling can upset your pet’s stomach. Take along ice cubes, which are easier on your pet than large amounts of water. Watch the Food Intake: It is recommended that you keep feeding to a minimum during travel. Be sure to feed them their regular pet food and resist the temptation to give them some of your fast food burger or fries (that never has a good ending!). Don’t Leave Them Alone: Never leave your pet unattended in a parked vehicle. On warm days, the temperature in your vehicle can rise to 120 degrees in minutes, even with the windows slightly open. In addition, an animal left alone in a vehicle is an open invitation to pet thieves.

Thanksgiving Travel Tips - With Pets

Continued From 5 Practice Restraint: Be sure that your pet is safely restrained in your vehicle. Utilizing a pet safety harness, travel kennel, vehicle pet barrier, or pet car seat are the best ways to keep your pet safe. They not only protect your pet from injury, but they help by keeping them from distracting you as you drive. A safety harness functions like a seatbelt. While most pets will not have a problem adjusting to it, you may want to let them wear the harness by itself a few times before using it in the vehicle. If your pet prefers a travel

kennel, be sure it is well ventilated and stabilized. Many pet owners prefer vehicle barriers, particularly for larger pets. Vehicle barriers are best suited for SUVs. Smaller pets are best suited for pet car seats. The car seat is secured in the back seat using a seat belt and your pet is secured in the car seat with a safety harness. In addition to it’s safety features, a pet car seat will prop up your smaller pet, allowing them to better look out the window. No matter what method you choose, back seat travel is always safer for your pet. Safe and Comfortable:

Whatever method you choose to properly restrain your pet in your vehicle, be sure to make their comfort a priority. Just as it’s important for your “seat” to be comfortable for your long road trip, your pet’s seat should be comfortable too. Typically their favorite blanket or travel bed will do the trick. There are also some safe and very cozy pet car seats available that your pet may find quite comfy. Careful preparation is the key to ensuring that you and your pet have a happy and safe trip.

Sheriff Honored With Award

Suffolk County Sheriff Vincent F. DeMarco was recently selected to receive the Caron Legal Professional/Uniformed Public Service Award. This award recognizes an individual who has done an outstanding job in either the legal or public service fields by combating the fight against chemical dependency through due process of the law, prevention and education. He was nominated for the award by Dr. Jeffrey Reynolds, the Executive Director of the Long Island Council on Drug and

Alcoholism. DeMarco, who accepted the award during a ceremony last week held at Adelphi University, thanked the Caron Center and Dr. Reynolds for their support, and stated “Our success is a credit to the many officers, community groups and volunteers who help us reach hundreds of young people each year with our prevention and rehabilitation initiatives.” Sheriff DeMarco has devoted significant resources to helping combat teen drug use through prevention

Lighting program, free and open to the public, will feature tours of the new Marine Sciences Center, the Doctor of Physical Therapy Labs (DPT), and the iconic windmill, named this year a Literary Landmark. The festivities will also include music from the Stony Brook University Pep Band, an appearance by Seawolves mascot Wolfie, seasonal refreshments, a caricaturist, balloon artist, and crafts for children. Following the Windmill Lighting and reception, the School of Marine and Atmospheric Sciences (SoMAS) will present

On Saturday, November 16th, the Camp-Pa-QuaTuck Patrons transformed the Camp Pa-Qua-Tuck’s newly renovated dining hall into a Las Vegas casino floor in an effort to raise money for the camp’s special-needs programs. The event raised $6,400. More than 100 people attended the event, which featured unlimited access to exciting games such as blackjack, craps, and slot machines, which

guests could play using “fun bucks.” A Chinese auction and a 50/50 raffle were also offered for those who wished to test their luck. Local caterers Island East Events and La Volpe Restaurant prepared an elegant buffet and passed hors d’oeuvres. A full bar and cocktail waitresses were also on hand to cater the camp’s guests. “We were very excited to host this very special event and very pleased to

programs, such as “Test, Don’t Guess” and the “S.T.O.P.P.E.D. Program,” as well as by connecting criminally drug-involved youth to appropriate treatment programs during and following a period of incarceration. Lighting Of The Windmill In conjunction with the ongoing observance of the 50th anniversary of the creation of the Shinnecock Hills campus, Stony Brook Southampton will host the traditional holiday lighting of the windmill and reception in Chancellors Hall on Friday, December 6th, from 5 to 7 p.m. The 301 year-old landmark underwent repairs last year following damage from Hurricane Irene in 2011. Recently, Legislator John M. Kennedy, Jr., Minority Leader of the Suffolk County Legislature, and Legislator Lynne Nowick honored former New York Jet Marty Lyons at a meeting of the Suffolk County Legislature, on the occasion of his induction to the New Yorks Jets Ring of Honor. Mr. Lyons, one-fourth of the feared front four of the 1980’s Jet teams, known as the New York Sack Exchange was known for his hard work and ferocity on the field, but maybe is better known for his kindly and charitable ways off the

field. While with the Jets, Mr. Lyons started the Marty Lyons Foundation, helping give wishes to terminally ill children between the ages of three and 17. It was because of this work with his foundation that Mr. Lyons won the Walter Payton Man of the Year Award and the Heisman Humanitarian Award. This year, the Jets inducted Mr. Lyons into the New York Jets Ring of Honor at Metlife Stadium during a ceremony featuring past honorees, and former teammates of Mr. Lyons. “Besides being

a national champion at the University of Alabama, an 11-year veteran with the New York Jets, a member of the College Football Hall of Fame, a successful businessman and broadcaster, it is Mr. Lyons ‘s work with the community right here in Suffolk County that is his biggest accomplishment,” said Legislator Kennedy. Three R’s In Action

The Commack Middle School Positive Behavioral Intervention Support (PBIS) Team unveiled a new initiative with the motto, “Respect, Responsibility, and Relationships.” The PBIS Team, led by Paul

Schmelter, Assistant Principal, are using the initiative to promote positive behaviors throughout the school. From the very first day of school, when each bus was boarded by a staff

member who introduced the bus driver to the students and welcomed the students to the start of a new school year, the 3Rs has been a success. Classroom teachers reinforce the school’s

expectations for student behavior and provide “real school-world” examples of how positive character traits can be exemplified throughout the school day. When a student is “caught” demonstrating respectful and responsible behaviors, the sighting teacher might mail a “Leading the Way” postcard to the student to acknowledge him/ her for leading the way with positive behavior. Hundreds of these cards have already been mailed to CMS students. The Art Service Club supports the “Hospitality, Too” soup kitchen in Brentwood. Club advisor and art teacher Grace Barrett designates six meetings a year for students to prepare hot

meals that are donated to the soup kitchen. The food used to create the meals comes from donations from the students and staff. The Leaders Club, under the direction of physical education teacher Theresa Bassett, allocates funds for the perishable items to be used in the meals such as cheeses for baked ziti and meat for frigadellas (a combination of meatballs and meatloaf). Family Consumer Science Teacher Angelina Napoli oversees the baking of seasonal cookies that are gift-wrapped and donated to the soup kitchen as well. In addition to the hot food and cookies, each sixth grade team volunteered to make peanut butter and jelly sandwiches at one of

the meetings this year. The first meeting netted 352 sandwiches! The students and staff members involved with this project accept the responsibility of preparing the meals, cookies, and sandwiches because they know the value of helping people who need help. New friendships and relationships are fostered as students from different grade levels work together for this very worthwhile cause. Mr. Schmelter was so impressed by the efforts of these students that he and members of the PBIS Committee presented buttons that these students are proud to wear to inspire their peers and to promote “Respect, Responsibility, and Relationships.”

Pajama Program Speaker Thursday, November 21st, The Rotary Club of Smithtown-Sunrise guest speaker was Petti Cellura, President of the Long Island Chapter of The Pajama Program, a 501(c)3 program created and founded in 2001. The Pajama Program serves children throughout the Nation with 62 Chapters in 32 States. The Pajama Program provides new books and new pajamas to children in need, many who are waiting and hoping to be adopted. Many of the children they serve are living in shelters and group homes and are often shuffled from one temporary home to another. Some of them are living with their families below the poverty level, in desperate need of food, clothing and shelter. Most have been removed from school for long periods of time and do not have access to books to continue their reading practice. Their reading skills are far lower than their peers. These youngsters have been abused or abandoned, and in many cases, have never enjoyed the simple comfort of having a mother or father tuck them in at bedtime in clean night clothing with a story read to them or their own book to read. The Pajama Program, is contributing to a warmer, more loving bedtime in a supportive reading environment for these special children. Since 2001 the Pajama Program has provided more than Two Million new pajamas and new books to children in need nationwide.

Petti mentioned that measuring the impact of the Pajama Program on positive change in a student readers’ growth is the important focus of their Literacy Program. With the help of notable professional educators on their Literacy Advisory Board, they continually plan and support instruction, and assess children’s knowledge of

literacy, both content and skills. They align their work to goals of the Common Core State Standards. The Pajama Program seeks ways to create and assess home and school connections that support growth of a literate person in the 21st century. Petti Cellura was born and educated in New York City. She worked for the New York City Board Of Education

for 25 years as an elementary school teacher before becoming an elementary principal in both NYC and in the Baldwin School District. Petti is the granddaugher of Italian immigrants, and upon retiring felt it was time to give back to the community. She began her volunteer work in local hospitals before finding the Pajama Program and it was their literacy component that drew her in. Now, as the Long Island Chapter President, she raises new PJ’s and new books for needy children on Long Island as well as leading a literacy project in partnership with the Hempstead School District. Pajama Program reading volunteers are working with first and second graders to help them develop their reading skills and to acquire a love for reading. Target Stores provided a generous grant to the Long Island Chapter of the Pajama Program to purchase reading materials to be used by the volunteers and then sent home with the children. The goal of the Pajama Program is to make sure that every child on Long Island is tucked in each night with a comfy pair of pajamas and a book to read at bedtime. The Boy Scouts of America’s Youth Protection Training (applicable to all Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts) for the volunteer scouting leaders was presented on October 26th at Cathedral Pines County Park in Middle Island, held during the recent Matinecock District’s annual Webelos Woods/Webelos to Scout Transition camping experience. Because of the great concern the Boy Scouts of America has the safety of all Scouts and for the problem of child abuse in our society, the youth protection program was developed to safeguard

DeMarco today announced a new partnership with GetCrashReports.com to provide online access to vehicular accident reports generated by Suffolk County Deputy Sheriffs. Most accident reports will now be available online within 72 hours of a crash, except for fatal crashes and accidents under investigation. A $5.00 convenience fee will be charged when obtaining crash reports online. Walk-in public records requests will still be

accepted for the general public at the Suffolk County Sheriff’s Office, Police Records Section, located at 360 Yaphank Avenue, Yaphank NY 11980. Accident reports involving fatalities will only be available in person. “It generally takes 7-10 days to process a standard request for an accident report and many people are eager to obtain this document to assist with insurance claims. Scouts from Boy Scout Troop 125 held a Peanut Butter and Jelly Drive locally at King Kullen (Commack) and Shoprite (Commack) on Saturday, November 2nd. An impressive 1298 lbs. 12 oz. (395 lbs. more than last year!) was collected

during the six hours the boys were there. All cash donations collected that day were used to purchase additional peanut butter and jelly. The collection was donated to the Troop’s sponsor, Commack United Methodist Church who

has a Peanut Butter and Jelly Gang that meets on the first Saturday of every month to make in excess of 1,000 PB&J sandwiches. All the sandwiches are then delivered to St. Anne’s Church in Brentwood and distributed to the hungry on Long Island.

On Saturday, October 5th, the Smithtown Recreation Department held its annual Singles and Doubles Fall Horseshoe Tournament at Brady Park. This year we had 19 single horseshoe participants and 8 doubles teams participate in the event. The winner of the Singles Tournament was

Matt Ryder with a record of 5-1, beating John Kassay, with a record of 6-2, for the championship. Eddie O’Rourke finished in 3rd place, for the second year in a row. Father and son team Lou and Chris Malandra were the winners of the Doubles competition. They finished with a record

of 4-1. Bernie Van Rossem & Greg Burns finished in second place with a record of 5-2. Congratulations to all the winners and to everyone who helped make this event so successful. Hope to see everyone at the Spring Horseshoe Tournament.

FRESHMAN ADDRESS - Paul Failla, retired police officer and educational speaker addressed our freshman class on Tuesday, November 19th. Through similes, humor and verbal demonstration students learned the do’s and don’t’s of success. Engaging in small role play and “how to” behavior Paul demonstrated that certain body language and verbal expression will lead participants into a life of fulfilling their goals. He also discussed decision making, goals, values and the demons in life which he referred to as tobacco, alcohol, drugs and gambling. Students were engaged and attentive for three periods.

POETRY RECITAL - The Smithtown H.S. East National English Honor Society held its first-ever Poetry Night on Friday, November 15th, at the Tic-Toc Café in St. James. Over fifty students attended, with about half of them sharing readings of original and published poems. Teachers who recited included Mr. Kelly, Ms. Kiernan, and Mr. Jackett. It was a truly wonderful evening, and the Society hopes to host another poetry event soon. Stay tuned!

Adopting A Pet: How To Choose Your Best Match (NAPSI)—Adopting a pet, whether it’s a giant dog or tiny kitten, is a big decision that requires a lifelong commitment—but when you find the right fit, adopting a pet also provides a life full of love. For example, when Mayling Zhong and Chester Leung visited a PetSmart Charities National Adoption Weekend event, they knew there were many factors they needed to consider before adopting a pet. “We knew that our small apartment needed a small dog,” said Leung. The two met several dogs before stopping at Smokey. Just 4 months old, the terrierminiature pinscher mix was a little excitable in his crate when he arrived, as many puppies are. As the day went on, however, Smokey calmed down and seemed smart and eager to please. His fun-loving personality (and small size) convinced Zhong to adopt him-she knew he would be the right fit for her and Leung. Within minutes, the couple was filling out

the adoption paperwork and they were ready to welcome the new pup into their home. Pet Points To Ponder If you’re considering adoption, here are a few things to keep in mind: 1. Space: Do you live in an apartment or a house? Do you have a big backyard? Different types of dogs and cats require different amounts of exercise and space. Zhong and Leung knew they needed to take into consideration the size of their home as part of their decision to adopt. 2. Time: Decide how much time you can dedicate to caring for a dog or cat. Cats can be more independent and often require less time for daily exercise. 3. Children: Make sure you are aware of the pet’s temperament. A shelter worker may be able to say how a pet gets along with children. You might even consider creating a special area in your home just for your pet, so he has a safe place to go if children are running around the house.

4. Resources: Ensure that you have the appropriate resources to care for a pet. Creating a budget for things like food and veterinary care is a good place to start. Adoption is a commitment for the pet’s entire life. One easy way to find adoptable pets and shelters is by searching PetSmart Charities’ adoptable pet locator. You can enter criteria such as age, breed and size of the pet you want. Most pets available through adoption are already spayed or neutered, vaccinated and licensed, and are often microchipped for a very affordable adoption fee. Helping Doctors Help Patients Stop Smoking (NAPSI)—To help protect you and your family from tobacco-related death and disease, researchers from Legacy®, a national public health organization dedicated to building a world where anyone can quit smoking, recommend two actions: stop smoking or never start. If you do smoke or use tobacco, speak to your doctor about quitting smoking. A survey of more than 3,146 adults in the U.S. conducted by Legacy discovered that more than one in 10 smokers have concealed their smoking status from a health care provider—nearly half of them stated it was because they are ashamed that they smoke. Another reason for not disclosing this important information to a medical professional: two-thirds surveyed who did not disclose their smoking status reported not wanting to be lectured about smoking. Fortunately, health care professionals such as doctors, nurses, physician assistants, nurse

practitioners, dentists and pharmacists can help smokers by bringing up the subject with patients. To assist with that, Legacy and Pfizer have developed a downloadable, userfriendly guide for health care providers to help them discuss smoking and tobacco use with their patients. Here are hints to help: • Talk openly about smoking. Ask every patient if they smoke. This may open the door to successful intervention. • Be positive and encouraging. Smokers are often dealing with shame or fear of quitting. Congratulate the smoker on the decision to quit and reiterate how you are there to help them on their journey. • Encourage smokers not to give up. Smoking is a chronic, relapsing medical condition; the average smoker tries to quit 6/9 times in their lifetime. Remind smokers that quitting is difficult, but can be attainable. • Make sure smokers

understand smoking for what it really is: a treatable medical condition. • Suggest patients consider evidence-based treatments, such as overthe-counter or prescription medications, and refer them to counseling to help them quit. Patients can call the national tollfree quitline, (800)-QUITNOW, for free counseling or seek help from no-cost websites such as www. BecomeAnEX.org. • Arrange follow-up contact as necessary to try to prevent relapse.
