he Commack Boys Varsity Soccer Team took home the NYSPHSAA Class AA State Championship on Sunday with a 2-0 win over Fairpoint. Back In Black By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Black Friday is nearly upon us once again. Can it really be one whole year since we all ventured into the void that is the morning after Thanksgiving to join the throngs searching for that special, magical bargain? Notice I said the morning after Thanksgiving, not the night of, not the day of, and certainly not the weeks leading up to… Black Friday festivities should be reserved for the day itself; that’s what makes it unique. Of course, we now have Small Business Saturday and Cyber Monday and a host of other “specialty” days to

observe as well, each with its own nuances – but all come down to the same basic concept: saving money. In all honesty, there has been some argument as to whether these days actually bring the best bargains, with some contending that the last minute rush in the days leading up to Christmas Eve is really the best bet for cost cutting. And then there are those who, as we sit here today, have already shopped, wrapped and shipped all their presents before the turkey hits the table. It would be nice if we could all take a step back and view holiday shopping as the joyous task it was meant to be, rather

than as a chore, a checklist of tasks to be crossed off one by one. Gift giving is meant to be an expression of appreciation for those we love, a token of thoughtfulness… not a source of stress and aggravation. The second it becomes that is the moment you need to pause and reevaluate your approach. So as you enjoy your Thanksgiving dinners gathered around the table with your families and friends, savor the moment. touched by her warmth and kindness. He remembers this moment, explaining; “Sarah is such a sweet young woman, with such a big heart.” Sarah and Bob worked together to come up with an idea to create artwork for the Stony Brook home. It was decided that Sarah would paint two portraits of children from Angela’s House who reside at the Stony Brook location. She picked these two children based on the severity of the children’s condition. “Sarah and her mom recently came to the home to bring her Portraits. She did the portraits in a spiritual way giving the children that are medically frail a smile, a beautiful background, and a feeling

as if they were at peace.” Said Bob, after seeing the finished works of art for himself. The real emotion and beauty came after showcasing the art in the home to all of the children though he exclaimed. “The amazing work created a beautiful moment as the staff and family members saw the portraits. It is one of those moments that are hard to put into words. There were smiles and tears of joy that was over whelming.” Bob, along with the families of Angela’s House are thankful for the love and generosity shown by Sarah Pulvirenti, and the powerful healing her artwork has brought to everyone at the Stony Brook home.

NEW EAGLE SCOUT - Suffolk County Legislator Robert Trotta congratulated Peter C. Tiranno of Smithtown for attaining the rank of Eagle Scout at his recent Court of Honor. Peter has been involved with scouting since first grade. His Eagle Scout Project was inspired by his love for baseball and his community, particularly the Smithtown Historical Society. The Society sponsors the Brooklyn Atlantics, a vintage baseball team, who play on the grounds of the Society and who were in need of a new grandstand. Peter and his fellow scouts designed and built a wooden grandstand for the fans to sit on comfortably and enjoy the baseball games.

AWARD WINNERS SALUTED - Last Week, Legislator John M. Kennedy, Jr. joined together with the Suffolk Regional Emergency Medical Services Council (REMSCO) to honor the winners of the 2013 REMSCO Awards, recognizing excellence and outstanding work in the area of emergency medicine and emergency medical services. Specifically, two very special local heroes from the Commack Volunteer Ambulance Corp won awards in two separate categories. Karen Moks received the 2013 EMS Educator of Excellence, while Michael Guttenberg, M.D. was named the 2013 Physician of Excellence for his work with the Commack Volunteer Ambulance Corp.

Approximately 30 middle school students recently were honored at a special Breakfast of Champions for their exemplary character and conduct. “Our middle school students were nominated for demonstrating positive characteristics of R.I.C.E. –

Respect, Impulse Control, Compassion and Equity,” described Principal Maryann Fletcher. “These traits are important to our school community as well as to the community at large.” The middle school students were nominated

and selected by various faculty members who work with them. The honorees, their parents and the nominating teachers greatly enjoyed the Breakfast of Champions, which was generously donated by Panera Bread.

Blades For Grades

The Commack Boys Varsity Soccer Team took home the NYSPHSAA Class AA State Championship on Sunday with a 2-0 win over Fairpoint. Played in Middletown, NY, the team had a thrilling victory on Saturday in the semifinal game, with the only goal scored by Commack’s Anthony Izzo in overtime beating Shenendowa 1-0. Izzo, a junior, was the star of the championship game, scoring both goals in the second half. Hundreds of people were on hand at Commack High School to celebrate the

team’s homecoming. Word spread quickly through the community, and the Commack Fire Dept. provided an escort for the team’s bus from the LIE north to the high school on Scholar Lane to rousing cheers from the waiting crowd. Coach David Viegas, exhausted but ecstatic, and hoarse from shouting, expressed his thanks to the team and the fans. “The show of support from the ENTIRE community, student body, parents, faculty, building and district administration,

Board of Education, and the Commack Soccer League has been overwhelming throughout this journey. Words cannot describe what we witnessed upon our arrival back to Commack High School. some young volunteers were tasked with helping their classmate dress in goaltender gear. SJES students were also treated to video messages from Islander players, emphasizing teamwork and being respectful on and off the ice. The team’s strength and conditioning coach also delivered a video message about healthy eating, hydration and getting proper rest, all of which improve concentration, help maintain a high level

of energy and can lead to a more productive and successful life. Every student at the school was given a folder with some Islander goodies inside, including a worksheet to be signed by teachers and parents that could result in free tickets to a future Islanders game. Red Ribbon Week is a national anti-drug campaign to promote healthy habits, smart decision-making and good character in schools.
