A poll from the trade group the National Federation of Independent Business reported that about half of all the businesses in the survey reported a 25 percent drop in sales since the outbreak of the COVID-19 virus, and roughly one in five businesses have seen sales decline by more than 50 percent. If the economic climate does not radically improve, 20 percent of small businesses won’t survive.
Celebrate the Holidays with a Beautiful, Healthy Smile
According to NBC News, small businesses employ 60 million people in the United States, almost half of the nation’s private-sector employees. In addition, small businesses generate tax revenues that help communities by funding schools, maintaining parks and contributing to public safety programs. However, based on research from the Federal Reserve Bank of New York, even before COVID-19 spread across the world, only 20 percent of healthy small businesses had sufficient cash reserves to continue to operate if they experienced a revenue loss for two months. Some have been shuttered for much longer.

• Look for small businesses for any and all of your shopping needs. Chances are items sold by big box retailers also are sold by small businesses. When the options are the same or similar, purchase from a small business instead of its big box competitor.
PLEASE CONSIDER DONATING TO YOUR LOCAL NON-PROFIT THIS SATURDAY
• Readily provide recommendations of small businesses with which you have done business. Too often people are quick to complain about places that have failed them, but those same people don’t think to say kind words about companies that went above and beyond. Share great experiences on social media or through word of mouth.
VETERANS ARE IN NEED, SEE OUR FULL PAGE AD FOR MORE INFORMATION!
• Talk to small businesses owners first if you have an issue. It’s tempting to go directly to social media to complain about something, but such complaints can have a dire impact. Always take issues to the manager or business owner first to see if a resolution can be reached. A manager may not be aware of an issue at all. Give small businesses a chance to make it right before taking things public. • If you own a small business, rely on other small businesses to fulfill your needs. Order supplies from fellow small business owners, seek the help of local financial advisors and tax professionals and use local suppliers and delivery personnel. Small businesses have experienced unprecedented setbacks due to COVID-19. By supporting small businesses, communities can help them regain stable footing.

Holiday Spending Holiday spending can easily exceed budgets. In order to corral their spending, holiday shoppers can decide which gifts are musthave and which can be replaced with something else. Consumers should follow the prices of the must-have gifts on their lists across various sources so that they can find the best deals. Find a suitable substitute for certain gifts if costs are more than your budget allows. Shoppers also can use social media to their advantage in an effort to save money. Friending a retailer on Facebook can make shoppers eligible for certain discounts. Use coupons and coupon codes whenever applicable to earn additional discounts. Signing up for email alerts also will enable shoppers to find out about other sales on the horizon.

Osteoarthritis Explained…
Our Treatment is Non-Surgical!
About Arthritis Knee Pain Centers
Osteoarthritis is also known as degenerative joint disease and is the most common type of arthritis. When osteoarthritis occurs, the surface layer of cartilage around the knee breaks down and wears away. The bones that connect at the knee joint then rub together with no cushion resulting in pain, swelling, and loss of motion in the joint. While the disease can progress quickly, in most people it develops gradually over a period of years.
Our treatment has been thoroughly tested by the FDA over many clinical trials and is designed specifically for those with knee pain. Its effectiveness is proven and is improved through the use of state-of-the-art live motion fluoroscopy which allows doctors to see exactly where the problem is occurring.
Our doctors at Arthritis Knee Pain Centers have decades of experience and are invested in utilizing the most cutting-edge technologies and methodologies to serve their patients. Through their experience they can customize a treatment plan that’s right for you. The Arthritis Knee Pain Centers offers hope and healing for your knee pain.
Osteoarthritis is Not Your Fault… It’s not your fault that you have osteoarthritis. There are many reasons why this disease afflicts people. Heredity can be a major cause of osteoarthritis. If a parent or grandparent had it, it may be passed down to you. Other reasons for developing osteoarthritis include: • Being overweight (medical factors can impact this, not just over-eating) • Aging (wear and tear) • Joint injury (falls, sport injuries) • Joints aren’t properly aligned or are imbalanced • Genetic defects in the joint cartilage • Undue stress on joints from work, sports, etc.

Here’s How Our Treatment Works… Our advanced technology allows our doctors to see the exact location in the knee where the greatest damage is. This is done through special imaging called flouroscopy. Once the affected area is located, an FDA-approved viscosupplementation gel is injected at the exact point where it will do the most good. From there, the healing process begins. The gel bonds with the existing natural fluid in the knee to create a lubricating and cushioning layer in the knee between the bones. This reduces pain, swelling and inflammation in the joint. Most patients feel improvement quickly and can resume activities they hadn’t previously been able to do because of the pain.

In 2001, the Suffolk County Legislature established the Firefighter and EMS Recognition Program to celebrate the contributions that such volunteers make to our community by donating their time, energy and expertise to protect the residents of Suffolk County. Suffolk Legislator Trotta selected Thomas McAree, Ex Chief of the Kings
Park Fire Department for this honor. Ex Chief McAree joined the Kings Park Fire Department on November 11, 1974, where he progressed through the ranks of Lieutenant, Captain and culminating as Chief of the Department from 1998-2000. Ex Chief McAree is retired from the New York City Fire Department. In addition, he is a longtime

Smithtown Township Arts Council is pleased to announce Celebrating Creativity: Creative Responses to Challenging Times a fine art exhibition featuring eighty-six works by fifty-one artists to be held through Dec. 19 at Mills Pond Gallery in St. James. Regular Gallery hours are Wed. - Fri., 10 am - 4pm; Sat. and Sun., 12 – 4 pm. The gallery is closed Mondays and Tuesdays and closed Nov. 25 – 29. Visit millspondgallery.org or call 631-862-6575 for directions or information. Admission to the gallery is always free. Please use our rear parking lot off Mills Pond Road, directly across from the two white stone pillars at Flowerfield Celebrations, 199 Mills Pond Rd. Exhibiting artists represent 34 Long Island communities from New Hyde Park to Montauk as well as New Jersey and New York City. Artists’ creative response to the coronavirus crisis brings us works that represent the experience of artists during the pandemic. We asked artists to show us what they have been creating during the pandemic and to share with us their thoughts and feelings about creating during these challenging times. Some works in the exhibit express the fear and anxiety while others find beauty in nature, or celebrate simple pleasures of everyday life. Some artists created to share memories of past joyful times… some created work specifically about the pandemic. Many shared that the creation of their art helped process their feelings. What is
While Black Friday and Cyber Monday are some of the more widely known retail holidays, Giving Tuesday is becoming pretty popular in its own right. Celebrated on the Tuesday following Thanksgiving, Giving Tuesday helps raise awareness that charity is an important component of the holiday season. The nonprofit services company Neon says nearly one-third of all annual giving occurs in December, with 12 percent happening over the final three days of the year. Giving Tuesday is positioned right in the midst of the most popular time for charitable giving. What makes Giving Tuesday unique is that it is largely fueled by the power of social media and collaboration. The day was actually created
by the 92nd Street Y, a cultural center in New York City that has been instrumental in bringing diverse groups of people together with the goals of giving back through service. The 92nd Street Y and the United Nations Foundation came together in 2012 to help form a day that was focused on the generosity of giving during the holiday season. Thus, Giving Tuesday was born. Technology and social media play a large role in uniting people for Giving Tuesday. Founding partners included Mashable, a technology website, Skype and Cisco, but the success of Giving Tuesday is thanks in large part to the general public, who have both spread the word and made their own contributions to charity. In 2017, Giving
Tuesday soared to new heights when technology mogul Bill Gates and his wife, Melinda, announced their foundation would match up to $2 million in donations to Giving Tuesday fundraisers started on Facebook. Facebook similarly waived its 5 percent fee for U.S.-based nonprofits all day long. The global Giving Tuesday movement helped raise more than $300 million online across more than 150 countries in 2017 alone. This year, the Giving Tuesday organization is poised to top their numbers and continue to improve upon the more than 46,000 participating organizations involved in their charitable efforts. Fall has traditionally been a great time of year to hit the open road. Fall foliage annually provides an idyllic backdrop for fall road trips, but 2020 is a year unlike any other, and veteran road trippers may wonder if it’s wise, or even legal, to take to the open road this fall. The COVID-19 virus has forced local governments to implement various changes aimed at preventing the spread of the potentially deadly virus. While interstate travel during the outbreak is different, it’s not illegal. However, many states put specific policies in place that mandated out-of-state visitors self-quarantine for a certain period time, most often 14 days. Such measures compelled many would-be travelers to remain within the borders of their home states. Traveling need not be a relic of the past because of a pandemic. In fact, travel enthusiasts can hit the open road this fall with their peace of mind intact, especially if they follow a few safety precautions while heading off for parts unknown. · Determine how far you really need to go. Restrictions have been lifted in many areas, but it’s still most convenient for drivers to stay somewhat close to home, ideally within their own
states. That makes it easy for them to buy food, gas, use a restroom, or visit a park or monument without violating the spirit of quarantine mandates. A trip need not cross borders to be fun.

CHRISTMAS JOY THIS YEAR MEANS FIGHTING HUNGER - On Saturday, December 5 from 9:00 to 2:00 St. Mark’s Episcopal Church will host it’s monthly outdoor drive-by food drop at the church, 754 Montauk Highway, Islip. The food drive is a joint effort with Islip Rotary. For information, please call the St. Mark’s office and ask for Irene, 631-581-4950. Pictured: Front: left to right: Reyna Boyd, Breanna Questel, Karen Pearsall, Evan Murphy. Back row: left to right: Jean Alfred (Islip Rotary), Robert Nathan (Islip Rotary) and Lynda Moran (Islip Rotary) Irene Ross, Laurel Questel, Christi Boyd, Dave Trujillo and President, Islip Rotary, Astrid Fidelia. On Saturday, December 5 from 9:00 to 2:00 St. Mark’s Episcopal Church will host it’s monthly outdoor driveby food drop at the church, 754 Montauk Highway, Islip, with the doors facing St. Mark’s Lane. The food drive is a joint effort with Islip Rotary. The nonsectarian food drives, which began in July, will, as always, send all food donations to God’s Provisions, an affiliate of Long Island Cares. God’s Provisions supports 25 locations by distributing pre-boxed meals and bags of groceries to church pantries, shelters and senior communities. Director Dana Jahn said Long Island Cares provides 60% of the shelf stable resources. “In fact, they obtained a grant for us to do direct food purchase,” she said, adding that the organization also gets support from churches, local stores and community sources. There is significant support from St. Mark’s, where both parishioners and non-parishioners make food and monetary donations. At one point, there were eight people who would go out on a regular basis to shop, sort and volunteer to put bags together.
“This support helped pull us through the early months of the pandemic when the food banks were scrambling for resources,” Jahn said. “Every time I think we’re getting low, someone hands me a check. One day the shortfall was so great I was afraid we wouldn’t be able to support all of our locations, but days before St. Mark’s had a food drop which enabled us to continue.” In November, St. Mark’s and Islip Rotary filled 175 boxes to send to God’s Provisions and it’s estimated that 25,000 items were collected. “It might have even been more, “ said Organizer Irene Ross. “At one point, we just stopped counting.” “We want to be sure no one goes to bed hungry,” said St. Mark’s Rector and longtime Rotarian, The Very Reverend Richard E. Simpson, “In this time of pandemic, food insecurity is increasing, not shrinking. Rotary’s motto is “service above self.” When Astrid Fidelia, the Islip chapter’s president heard about this, she immediately mobilized everyone. They spread the word to members and to other Rotary chapters, including Bay Shore, Brentwood and Sayville among others, and they volunteer on the day of the
drives. Ross added that they are often recognized by the community surrounding the church. “In fact, some even wait for us! It’s a serious subject, but we try to keep it light and joyful with contests and challenges, kids and special waves; in December, we’re going all out for Christmas with lights, decorations, music and even a Santa. We want people to keep coming back.” The St. Mark’s food drop has also gotten community support, including from Tula Kitchen who recently donated a gift card for the winner of the September challenge. Duncan Weir, a congregant who’s also on the design team of Gorilla Wrap, creates beautiful, eyecatching banners that are hung well before the event, for those to see as they walk or jog past or stop at a traffic light, as a kind of Save the Date.” Volunteers will be at the tables in front of the church doors on St. Mark’s Lane. As always, no one needs to get out of cars; pop the trunk and volunteers will grab the food. Masks and social distancing are asked for those who do choose to get out of cars. For more information, please call the St. Mark’s office and ask for Irene, 631-581-4950.

This property, formerly a state armory, is now home to a library, a venue for concerts, a park with many features like the track, sports fields, trails, dog runs, playground and water park… and now it’s all connected. I want to acknowledge and thank Joe Arico and his extremely talented team at the Parks Department. Together as a team, this town board remains committed to constantly improving these amenities and look forward to adding new ones for the residents to enjoy.” Supervisor Ed Wehrheim

Holiday hosts toil for hours to create lavish meals everyone will enjoy. It’s not uncommon for Thanksgiving tables to be covered with more food than guests can conceivably (and comfortably) consume. Leftovers are the norm, but without a plan for what to do with leftovers, food can spoil or end up in the trash. Here are some delicious and waste-conscious ways to put Thanksgiving or other holiday meal leftovers to use.

virtual “live animal visits,” where farm animals such as sheep, goats and a mini-donkey were the stars. In addition to being educational, the “visits” were highly entertaining. Another new addition to this year’s event were “coffee talks,” opportunities for parents to interact with others at the same stage of life, such as those with a child who is an infant, toddler, elementary age, middle school age, high school age, special needs, or gifted. All Kids Fair Director Barbara Kaplan said the time was right to pivot to an All Kids Fair virtual expo. “It was definitely not “just a Zoom event.’ It was a fullfledged virtual expo. We incorporated many of the activities of our live events plus some new opportunities such as our “virtual live animal visits” and “coffee talks.” Families had a great time learning at our many classes about services and
products available to them.” Repeat attendee David Rosenthal of Oceanside raved about the event. “My girls had a blast! The younger one loved looking at the animals [in the virtual petting zoo], and my older one liked Captain America and the ballet class. They asked if there will be another All Kids Fair next month!” There were several non-Long Island based businesses this year who enjoyed the opportunity to make their services available to Long Islanders virtually. Magician Dennis Kyriakos of California hosted a fun performance. Annaline Dinkelmann of Teach Me Wall Street, a New York City-based business, was a newcomer this year. She shared that “the All Kids Fair made it easy for the parents because we have the Christmas holidays coming up. Families were able to learn about things to do; it opened their eyes. I was very pleased with the event.”
The All Kids Fair, as always, had many diverse exhibitors including party entertainment, tutoring, activities, health/wellness products and services, nonprofits, travel, and even a Girl Scout troop. Sponsors for this year’s All Kids Fair were: Long Island Parent Magazine, Your Local Kids Source, Jovia Financial, Blank Slate Media, Home Health and Spirit, Fidelis Care, SAT/ACT
Sense, Clowns.com, and Law Offices of Cohen & Jaffe. Those who wish to enjoy the platform now may do so at no charge. All Kids Fair Was Virtual – And Is Now Available For Free
The 10th annual All Kids Fair, which was postponed from its usual month of April to November 8, was virtual! This expo could not take place in its usual month due to COVID-19, but those who attended had a terrific time. This year’s All Kids Fair had a great line-up of virtual classes for the kids of all ages with some for the adults, too. Some of the many kids’ classes were: Disney Singalong, Soccer, two Floral Arranging classes, and Family Yoga. For the adults, there were classes on Essential Oils, Fidelis Care Information, and Pampering Pitstop. The platform that the event took place on will store the information for the next 27 days, so all are welcome to visit the platform and learn about the 35 exhibitors and their offerings and enjoy over half of the classes, available on the site until December 8. Since families always enjoy our in-person petting zoo, this year there were
activities, places for kids to play, camps, day cares, kid-friendly products such as toys and books, and health/wellness products and services.
