ommack High School’s Pay it Forward Club began its annual Rake-It-Forward drive this week. The spirit of the season drives this event, with club members lending a helping hand by raking leaves for senior citizens in the community. Another in the long list of events driven by the selfless members of the Pay it Forward Club, the students filled over 50 bags of leaves after school at three senior’s residences, before darkness stopped them.

A group of friends who joined together in 2014 to help “America’s Vet Dogs” presented several checks to that organization last week, totaling over $15,000 for this year. The group, whose members reside all across Brookhaven and Islip towns and call themselves “Friends of America’s Vet Dogs,” conducted several yard sales, a Chinese auction and other events during 2015, expressly for the Vet Dogs. Last weeks donation of $2,050 included the proceeds of one yard sale, a $600 donation from the Giuseppe A. Nigro Sons of Italy Lodge #2234 and personal donations from others. “America’s Vet Dogs”, located in Smithtown on the campus of the Guide
Dog Foundation for the Blind, breeds, raises, trains and places service dogs with veterans in need across the nation, at no cost to the veteran. Their mission is to “help those who have served our country honorably live with dignity and independence.” The dogs provide a wide array of services not only for those visually impaired, but also for those who have balance issues due to brain injury or loss of a limb; can alert on seizure onset to avoid the event; detect and alert on low blood sugar; ease post traumatic stress disorder symptoms; assist with shopping and traveling; as well as many other functions. Some dogs are also trained as combat service
Treats for the Troops dogs providing front line stress intervention in Afghanistan and other conflict zones; work at military hospitals across the USA to assist veterans with therapy and exercise; provide specific physical and occupational therapy tasks for their handler; and perform many other highly specific duties any given veteran may require. The program receives no government funding and relies totally on independent donations and support from groups such as “Friends of America’s Vet Dogs.” “Friends of America’s Vet Dogs” may be contacted at PO Box 18, Bohemia, NY 11716 (ATTENTION Cliff Miller). Students at Nesaquake Middle School in the Smithtown Central School District showed their generosity this November by donating to troops overseas. Eighth-grader Kaitlyn Malone ran a Treats for Troops drive at the school and collected 150 pounds of candy, 55 pounds more than she collected last year. On Veterans Day, Kaitlyn brought the candy to the U.S. Marine Corps Recruiting Center in Smithtown. They will send the donations overseas to the men and women currently serving our country.
Goldilocks on Trial

SHOWING SOLIDARITY - French students in Dominick Kosciuk’s classes expressed their sympathy and showed their solidarity with the people of France after the attacks on Paris on November 13th. The classes composed letters of sympathy and delivered them to the French Consulate in New York, along with the attached photo. Commack High School Principal, Catherine Nolan, was thankful to the students and their teacher for “increasing our students’ sensitivity about this horrific event and for this display of empathy towards humanity.”
Fourth- and fifth-graders at Tackan Elementary School in the Smithtown Central School District put Goldilocks on trial on November 6th and 10th. Goldilocks was accused of trespassing at the Three Bears’ home, eating Papa Bear’s porridge and leftover chicken, stealing money (petty larceny), trying
on Mama Bear’s dresses and breaking a rocking chair (criminal mischief). Goldilocks went on trial against the plaintiffs, the three bears. As Goldilocks’ lawyers and the prosecution went toe to toe trying to prove their respective clients’ cases, other fairy tale characters were called
to testify as witnesses including the Big Bad Wolf, Little Red Riding Hood, the Gingerbread Man, the Three Blind Mice and Chicken Little. After hearing all the facts in the case, the jury handed down a verdict and sentencing for Goldilocks, which varied from class to class.

School theatre students on their mission to use their creative talents to become voices of social change at the third annual “Stage the Change, Theatre as a Social Voice” Conference, which was held on November 6th, at the Tilles Center for Performing Arts in Brookville, New York. Participating in “Stage the Change” “was an enlightening experience and really made me stop and think about the power of our voices in the arts,” stated Hauppauge High School Student Maria Johnsen. Since 2012, the students in Hauppauge Theatre Teacher Ruth Pincus’ Advanced Acting Ensemble Class have written and performed numerous vignettes bringing a voice to such issues as: bullying, social injustice, peer pressure, healthy relationships, making a difference in the world and so much more. About 525 students, educators and administrators from approximately 25 Long Island high schools participated in the 2015 Conference. “Year after year, I watch students, educators and communities empowered by the use of our ‘arts voices.’ I am so proud to be part of a community that not only cherishes, but

Talents on Display
Hauppauge High School Theatre Department’s extraordinary talents recently were on display in an impressive production of Up the Down Staircase. The play depicts the first, trying assignment for a young, idealistic teacher at a New York City high school. The production’s title refers to the staircases inside an overcrowded, public New York City high school with a number of troubled students. Fresh out of graduate school, Sylvia Barrett, played by Hauppauge High School Senior Maria Johnsen, has just been hired to teach English to the teens in the school who come from various races and ethnicities. Many are undisciplined; a few are
hanging out with gangs. Barrett is confused at first by the required regulations, daily reporting and other paperwork. Her students also continually seem disruptive and playful. Alice Blake, played by Alexa Cunningham (11th grade) has a crush on a male teacher, Paul Barrenger, played by Francesco DiFlora, (10th grade) and tries to jump out of a window; Joe Ferone, played by Craig Bottner (12th grade) on court probation, with a high I.Q. but a mixed academic record, tests her patience, while another boy, Charles Aarons, played by Henry Sweeney (9th grade) works nights and falls asleep in class. Not everyone in the school is agreeable with Barrett’s quiet approach
to the situation, but she intends to get the teens to become good students and get them into real learning. She succeeds finally by getting the students into a lively discussion about classic literature, followed by a lively mock trial, before weighing whether to continue or resign from her teaching position. “Once again, I am truly amazed by the talent and the hard work of everyone involved in the production of Up the Down Staircase,” stated Hauppauge Theatre Teacher Ruthie Pincus. “It is an honor to collaborate with such a delightful and dedicated group of students.”
Students from Great Hollow Middle School and Dogwood Elementary School in the Smithtown Central School District joined forces to help fight hunger on October 24th. Members of the schools’ Peanut Butter Gang, a community service
club, visited Hospitality Too soup kitchen in Brentwood. They made peanut butter sandwiches to be distributed at various locations on Long Island and in New York City, and helped serve a hot lunch to soup kitchen guests. In addition, students
distributed Halloween costumes that had been collected at drives held in both buildings.

An Ode to My Human By: Jamie Lynn Ryan “Tis the time of year to be thankful, and I’d like to take this opportunity to acknowledge my Human, as I’ve been told by many fans that I am far too tough on her, what with my lack of fancy accommodations and inconsistent feeding schedule. I suppose I have been a bit harsh in my criticisms. Us bettas tend to have one-track minds, you know. In truth, I do appreciate the love and attention she shows me – and she has been better of late with notifying me when dinner is going to be delayed. Speaking of, I hear there’s a large meal coming up – a Thanksgiving, I believe it’s called – where humans
gather ‘round to eat a large stuffed bird. What a disturbing concept. I sure hope there’s no fish on the menu! I do hope I get an invite and my very own place setting though. Day after day, I watch my human unload groceries, chop vegetables, prepare dinner… and then it disappears into the dining room, never to be seen again. All that food, and no leftovers for Buddy? Maybe if I sit at the table and stare at their plates, someone will drop a morsel into my bowl. One can only hope. There I go again, with my culinary obsession. Tiny brain, eyes-bigger-thanstomach. Typical fish. But seriously, a sincere thanks to all my loyal followers who constantly write in to my
human with fan mail, asking about my status and wishing me well. Your interest in the musings of a tiny finned creature are appreciated. Nine months and still going strong! Guess I should start working on my Christmas list… maybe a larger bowl, a small castle, some fun foliage to frolic in, a leafy hammock to sleep in… Is anyone writing this stuff down? Oh, and maybe a small finned friend to play with? As long as they’re not too fancy and colorful, that is… we can’t have any other creatures stealing too much of my Human’s attention. ‘Til next time, Happy Thanksgiving to all the humans out there. TRAVELING BACK IN TIME TO THE 1920’S SUBMITTED BY: KRISTIN DITRANO, AGE 11, FAIRFIELD ELEMENTARY SCHOOL
On October 27th, Fairfield School, also known as Massapequa Avenue School, turned ninety. The fifth and sixth grade gathered together and learned about our school and how special it truly is. At the end of the ceremony, the historical society unveiled an historical marker. Some things I learned about the early days of our school are: there weren’t houses surrounding our school like today; there were open fields with cows. I also learned the kids didn’t ride on the bus to school; they walked, rode a bike or road in a carriage pulled by a horse, if they were lucky. Fairfield School only had one room that held multiple grades. The last thing I learned was a classroom could have up to 30 children but only have one teacher.
In the 1920’s, Sebastian Hilton invented a contraption that changed the life of many children. This contraption was invented in Chicago, where Sebastian and his mathematical father lived. Mr. Hilton invented the jungle gym! Sebastian’s father wanted to build a play structure that kids could play on and learn about x, y and z coordinates at the same time. This invention is important because the jungle gym is an object enjoyed by many children. I can connect to the invention of the jungle gym because every time I go to the park, I play on the three dimensional figure and it entertains many kids. In the 1920’s, the stock market crashed and many people lost all their life savings. As a result of this, people
started to live in Hoovervilles. People made houses out of boxes and other scrap material they found. Hoovervilles were found all over the country, but some major Hoovervilles were found in St.Louis, Missouri, Seattle and Washington. This event took place in the 1920’s and ended in 1929. This event is important because many people were homeless for many years because of the stock market. I can connect to this because whenever I go to the city, I see homeless people living in cardboard boxes and this reminds me of Hoovervilles. As you can see, the 1920’s was a challenging time because of the crash in the stock market. This major event will be put down in history just like our school was on October 27th.

Dear Community, I am writing this letter to ask for your prayers and any help you can give to beautiful “Mighty” Maya, who was born June 17th, 2015 with a rare neurological disorder called Hemimegalence phaly. This disorder causes catastrophic epileptic seizures that, in time, could severely debilitate Maya’s cognition and even kill her. Anti-seizure medi cation will not work to control her seizures. The only way to help Maya live a productive and fulfilling life is to have her undergo radical surgery, a hemisphe rectomy, that disconnects the “bad” half of her brain. Maya’s parents are asking for donations to be used toward the cost of everything associated with Maya’s journey, from travel, to medical needs, to physical and occup ational therapy, among other expenses. We know that Mighty Maya is stron g enough for the challenges ahead and we thank you for helping her get there by either spreading the word and donating to her cause. At the age of only four months, Maya had her brain surgery on October 28th, to disconnect the “bad” half of her brain , at Boston Children’s Hospital. After being in ICU for a number of days, Maya is now recovering in inpatient care, where she started receiving physi cal therapy soon after her brain surgery. I am writing this letter to ask you for your help for Mighty Maya and her parents. The New York State School Music Association (NYSSMA), is proud to announce that Three Hundred Twenty-Nine (329) students from school music programs across Long Island have been selected to perform among the more than nine hundred (900) students in eight (8) NYSSMA All State Ensembles. This constitutes more than one-third of the total number of students selected for All State. Approximately nine hundred (900) students from high schools across New York State will perform in eight ensembles, and professional development related to music education will be offered to approximately 1,200 attendees. Several school ensembles will be featured, and Glenn Nierman, President of the National Association for Music Education (NAfME) will deliver the keynote address. NYSSMA’s featured
artist will be Triton Brass. Members of this exciting Internationally-renown musical quintet has been artists-in-residence at both the Tanglewood Institute and The Boston Conservatory, where each has served as on the faculty. “As NYSSMA celebrates its eightieth All State Conference, we are proud to partner with the city of Rochester for the eighteenth year in a row,” said Dr. David Gaines, NYSSMA President. “Music educators from all over the State will attend for professional development opportunities, seminars, performances, and valuable lesson materials for use in their classes and rehearsals.
