Mackenzie Clarke of Kings Park and a graduate of the Fort Salonga Elementary School designed and constructed a beautiful garden at her alma mater in memory of the Kings Park School District’s late physical education teacher, Michael McDermott. “It is wonderful that Mackenzie created a lasting tribute for Michael, who was so loved by everyone. Students, staff and teachers enjoy spending time there,” said Suffolk County Legislator Rob Trotta, who represents the area. Mackenzie did this project, suggested by her Troop 2670 leader Irene Gilbert, to complete

the requirements for her Girl Scout Silver Award, the highest honor one can achieve as a Cadette Girl Scout. This award exemplifies the values of leadership, character and service that are inherent in Girl Scouts. Mackenzie received tremendous support from the Kings Park business community to complete her project, which included the following donations: • fencing and gate from Eastern Wholesale Fence • installation of fence and gate by Kings Park Fence • stepping stone by Art Stone & Memorial • Stefan Rosen,

The holiday season sometimes arrives with a frenetic pace. At the dawn of the holiday season, there seems to be so much to fit into a relatively short period of time, including planning celebrations and shopping. The rush often begins the Friday after Thanksgiving on a day called Black Friday. Plaid Friday was born out of a recognition that the frenzied nature of Black Friday may not be for everyone. The event was created in Oakland, Calif., to transform holiday shopping for family and friends into a more connected, pleasurable activity than Black Friday. Plaid Friday promotes the diversity and creativity of local and independent businesses. On Plaid Friday, customers are urged to shop locally and enjoy choosing gifts in a more leisurely fashion. According to event organizers, the name “Plaid Friday” was chosen from the idea of weaving individual threads of small

businesses together to create a strong fabric that celebrates independent businesses. While Plaid Friday may have originated in California, it has now spread to local towns across the country. Plaid Friday precedes Small Business Saturday, meaning holiday shoppers can turn their two-day, postThanksgiving shopping excursions into 48 hours of opportunities to support small businesses. Shoppers have many different ways to support the Plaid Friday movement. • Look for signage or advertising regarding Plaid Friday. Many establishments may advertise Plaid Friday sales. Keep an eye out for signs or hashtags on social media, such as #plaidfriday, #shoplocal and #dinelocal. • Let others know you’re supporting local businesses. Spread the word about Plaid Friday to others who may not be aware of the movement.

• Wear plaid clothing on Plaid Friday to show local business solidarity. • Search community blotters and other local websites to find out more about Plaid Friday efforts in your community. • Certain shops may have scaled-back sales due to COVID-19 restrictions. Continue to support these businesses as much as possible, taking advantage of curbside pickup or delivery options that can further streamline holiday shopping. • Explore new offerings. Some businesses you frequently shop with may have altered their services and products to fit the changing times. As a result, you may be able to purchase a greater variety of items all in one store. Local shopping is at the heart of Plaid Friday. Shoppers who want to avoid the typical rush of Black Friday shopping can visit small local businesses.

Supporting Small Businesses Supporting small businesses ensures more money stays in the communities those businesses serve. The U.S. Small Business Administration says $48 out of every $100 spent at

a small business stays in the community. On the flip side, when a person spends $100 at a big-box store or a national chain, only $14 remains in the community. Local businesses are more likely to utilize other local

businesses, such as banks, service providers and even farms. Small businesses also pay employees, many of whom are local and shop local, thereby keeping even more dollars in their communities.

Jersey Mike’s Subs Donates $300,000 To Matching Campaign To Support Wreaths Across America

National nonprofit Wreaths Across America (WAA) is proud to announce that Jersey Mike’s Subs has made a $300,000 donation to support a matching campaign from Nov. 15 – 30, 2021, with a goal to sponsor 40,000 veterans’ wreaths for placement this National Wreaths Across America Day – Saturday, Dec. 18, 2021. Through this donation, Jersey Mike’s has once again stepped up to support the mission to Remember the fallen, Honor those that serve and their families, and Teach the next generation the value of freedom. Starting Monday, Nov. 15, through Tuesday, Nov. 30, 2021, every $15 wreath sponsorship made at www. wreathsacrossamerica. org/JerseyMikes will be matched by the company,

up to $300,000! Since 2012, Jersey Mike’s has raised more than $2.5 million to support WAA’s mission.
