Kicks for Cancer

he Hauppauge School District community recently rallied to support the 9th annual Kicks for Cancer. The event raised more than $35,000 through community donations, raffles and sales of t-shirts, hoodies, bracelets, sunglasses, lanyards, blankets and hats. Kicks for Cancer is named in memory of Courtney Tomkin – a former Hauppauge High School student and soccer player who lost her valiant battle against brain cancer in 2008.

headed up by Claudia Ragni of the Kenneth Peters Center and Nancy Lawless of Seafield Center, raised more than $50,000 to support LICADD’s work in the community. LICADD Executive Director Steve Chassman, LCSW,CASAC summed up the event, “Each year, this gathering is an important opportunity for the Long Island recovery community to reflect on victories and the miracle of recovery, as well as to rally around the crucial issues for the

coming year. We have made great strides in 2016 on behalf of Long Islanders struggling with addiction, but there is much left to accomplish.” Families are dealing with the devastating effects of untreated addiction across Long Island and every day the region loses at least one person to fatal overdose. However, it remains uncommon for health plans to cover comprehensive addiction treatment, while unnecessary bureaucratic

barriers often stand between someone receiving the help they need and remaining trapped in an overwhelming – and completely treatable – disease cycle. In addition, the event’s Recovery Speaker, discussed her own inspiring journey into and back out of the depths of addiction. Her story underlined the extremely treatable nature of addiction as a disease and offered hope to those who battle this illness or have a family member

struggling with it. Of Fuzz & Refurbishing What better way to kick off the Thanksgiving holiday than with a column by yours truly, everyone’s favorite fish. It’s been quite some time since my last contribution, and readers have been writing in to inquire as to my whereabouts, my wellbeing and the like. Well, I’m still swimming; perhaps a little more frayed and frazzled of late, but such is life. I’m happy to report that my Human finally got on board with the whole concept of heating my suite, making for a nice cozy atmosphere to spend the chillier months. You know us tropical fish – anything under 78º and I’m looking for a sweater.

Speaking of, I seemed to be growing my own little fur coat of sorts over the last week or so, as my fins began sprouting tiny tufts of white fuzz. Apparently, this is not supposed to happen, and so my Human decided to overhaul my entire tank and redecorate with new gravel and a pretty little – emphasis on little – plant. My favorite feature of all, though, would have to be the tiny “betta hammock” which now hangs from the side, essentially a leaf attached to a suction cup. I suppose this was designed to replace my former, much larger, luxurious plant which I used to use as a pillow of sorts. I must say, though, it’s quite

inferior. Too straight, too shiny and slippery…but the suction cup, that’s the greatest. How I do love to sit perched atop it, resting my weary fins after a long day of swimming laps. After a few days of fishy antibiotics, my little fuzz problem seems to have gone away. Now, I patiently wait for my beautiful blue fins to regenerate so I can be back to my old spectacular self. ‘Til then, enjoy your turkey and your football, your shopping and your decorating, and stay tuned for my next words of wisdom. ‘Til next time, this is Buddy signing off on behalf of his Human. Christmas Service Recognized annually on November 14th, World Diabetes Day was created in 1991 by the International Diabetic Foundation and the World Health Organization in response to the growing concerns about the escalating health threat posed by diabetes.

In the United States today, one out of every three people has diabetes. Another 79 million people have prediabetes and are at risk of developing diabetes. The students in Danielle Sukoff’s and Elia Figari’s 4th grade class at Bretton Woods Elementary School

dressed in blue on World Diabetes Day to show their support for individuals with Type 1 Diabetes. The blue circle signifies the unity of the global diabetes community in response to the diabetic epidemic.

The historic Smithtown Landing United Methodist Church will be holding its Christmas Service on Sunday December 4th, at 3 p.m. The church, only open to the public twice a year, is located on the corner of Landing Avenue and Oakside Road in Smithtown. First organized in 1795, the church was built

in 1834 and dedicated in October of that year. Originally the church had only a center aisle - upon entering, men would seat themselves on the left and women on the right. The names of the founders can still be seen among the headstones in the cemetery that surrounds the church. The area was known

as Smithtown Landing and the church was affectionately called the “little church in the woods.” Pastor Kirk Lyons, from the St. James Methodist church, will lead the service with Donald Reinertsen on organ. Please come join us to celebrate, sing and connect with Smithtowns’ past!

Donation Received Family Service League (FSL), a Long Island based non-profit human service organization, is proud to announce that it has been awarded a $30,000 grant from Paddlers for Humanity to support its Community Behavioral Health Collaborative (CBHC). This program advances early recognition and identification of potential emotional disorders in children on Long Island’s South Fork through expanded screening initiatives and follow-up services for parents whose children have possible risk concerns.

The CBHC creates a continuum of services beginning with early identification of children with potential emotional disorders, interventions that rely on parent/ family/school/community involvement through supportive and educational programs. The continuum also includes care coordination and treatment for those whose needs have progressed to more serious levels of emotional disturbance. Other CBHC services include: increased psychiatric and social work services in East Hampton and Southampton to include on-site services

in both high schools and increased clinic capacity, Mental Health First Aid Training to promote early identification through a network of trained community members, and workshops for residents, school faculty, and community professionals that will address children’s mental health issues. “Family Service League is grateful for the support of Paddlers for Humanity”, said Karen Boorshtein, FSL President & CEO, “These services are essential to the well-being of children and families who call Eastern Long Island home.”

Calling All WWII Vets Of the over 16 million service men and women who served our country during World War II, the Department of Veterans Affairs estimates that only about 660,000 are still alive, with an average age of well over 90. In NY State, surviving World War II veterans number less than 100,000. To honor these veterans, the first-ever Big Apple Honor Flight will take place on April 29th from JFK Airport to Washington DC. Founders of the upstate nonprofit, Hudson Valley Honor Flight, are bringing this program to the Big Apple for the first time ever and will take NYC’s Greatest Generation, veterans of World War

II, on this “Flight of a Lifetime.” As a 501(c)3 organization, a percentage of the value of any placements of this PSA are tax deductible. Kicks for Cancer

Hauppauge High School Fine and Performing Arts Department’s extraordinary talents recently exploded on the stage with an extraordinary production of The Laramie Project. The play recounts the horror that took place in October 1998 in the middle of the prairie outside of Laramie, Wyoming. Tw e n t y - o n e - y e a r- o l d University of Wyoming student Matthew Shepard was tied to a fence post, severely beaten, robbed, tortured and left alone to die. His body – battered, bloody, barely clinging to life – was discovered 18 hours later. He was rushed to the hospital and put on life support. He died five days later. The reason for this brutal crime? Matthew Shepard was gay. Led by Founder Moisés Kaufman, members of New York’s Tectonic Theater Project traveled to Laramie in the aftermath of Shephard’s murder. The

group interviewed more than 200 subjects – some directly related to the case and others regular town citizens – over the course of the subsequent year and a half. The Laramie Project was born out of these interviews as well as journal entries and found texts. The play follows, and in some cases reenacts, “moments” in the chronology of Shepard’s visit to a local bar, his kidnap and beating, the discovery of him tied to a fence, the hospital vigil, his death and funeral, and the trial of his killers Arthur Henderson and Aaron McKinney. There are more than 60 characters portrayed in The Laramie Project – Tectonic Theatre Project members, townspeople, clergy, hospital staff, law enforcement, the media, members of the judiciary, the murderers and many others. In perhaps the most dramatic moment

of the play, Matthew’s father, Dennis Shephard, speaks to the court to offer his opinion on the death penalty. (Despite the fact that Wyoming does have the death penalty, Henderson and McKinney each received two consecutive life sentences for their crimes against Shephard.) The Laramie Project is a massive undertaking for a theatre department with its complex subject matter and numerous character “moments.” According to Hauppauge Theatre Teacher Ruthie Pincus, “Hauppauge’s theatre students have eloquently told the tragic story of Matthew Shepard and masterfully handled such important issues as hate and discrimination and with understanding, grace and beauty. The Hauppauge School District community recently rallied to support the 9th annual Kicks for Cancer fundraiser. The event raised more than $35,000 through community donations; raffles; and sales of t-shirts, hoodies, bracelets, sunglasses, lanyards, blankets and hats. Kicks for Cancer is named in memory of Courtney Tomkin – a former Hauppauge High School student and soccer player who lost her valiant battle against brain cancer in 2008. Kicks for Cancer has donated more than $235,000 over the years to various charities, including: the Making Headway Foundation, the American Cancer Society – Making Strides against Breast Cancer, the American Lung

Association, the MakeA-Wish Foundation and the Courtney Tomkin Scholarship Fund. Launched at Hauppauge School District in 2008, today more than 40 schools in Suffolk County run their own Kicks for Cancer game through the Suffolk County Girls Soccer Coaches Association (SCGSCA). “Kicks for Cancer is an incredible event developed by Jesseca Kulesa and the Hauppauge Girls Varsity Soccer Team (HGVS). However, it isn’t just about our daughter Courtney,” described the Tomkin family. “It is for every family in our community to share in and celebrate their families who have struggled and won, who are battling or who have lost to cancer. Who doesn’t know a family or friend that hasn’t been devastated by a diagnosis of cancer no

matter what type? So we celebrated Courtney and all those who struggle with cancer, who are battling cancer and for those who have been victorious in beating cancer’s butt!!! May someday – through research and funding – we be a world that is cancer free!” “Our community continues to amaze me. Despite the less than perfect weather conditions this year, we still had a tremendous turnout. Last Thursday Legislator Leslie Kennedy had the privilege of honoring Eagle Scout Michael Brasile at his Eagle Court of Honor hosted at the Elks Lodge in Smithtown. Michael is a Scout in Troop 111 in Nesconset, and he has completed all

the requirements to obtain the rank of Eagle Scout. To obtain this rank Michael had to complete a community service project, for his project Michael chose to work on the Lake Grove Post Office. He built retaining wall flowerbeds under each window at the

Post Office, and he built a 12x12 retaining wall decorated with flowerbeds and a boulder. The project helped to revitalize the Post Office, which was in need of much care.

Dr. Who Convention

Recently, Legislator Leslie Kennedy and Suffolk County Comptroller John Kennedy stopped in to visit at Long Island’s 4th annual Doctor Who Convention, or L.I. Who 4, as it is known to local Whovians. The event took place over the Veteran’s Day weekend and was hosted at the Hyatt Regency Long Island on Motor Parkway in Hauppauge, N.Y. It is a fan-run and fan-supported convention which has

just celebrated its fourth consecutive year here on Long Island. The fans even took the opportunity to give back to Veterans, hosting a complimentary Veterans breakfast on Friday morning. Doctor Who fans, however; have been around for much longer. The show first aired on the BBC in 1963 and has since expanded across the pond and around the globe. Throughout the course

of the three-day weekend, the Hyatt Regency was filled with thousands of Doctor Who fans dressed in costumes, selling merchandise, and hosting panels. Legislator Kennedy would like to again thank the Whovians for hosting their convention in our community and hopes that they continue to choose Hauppauge as the home for future conventions.

Elementary Honors The veterans were warmly greeted initially by the PTA as they walked up the flag lined entrance to the building. Veteran Ronald Barz spoke to the Bretton Woods students about his service, pride and the sacrifices that men and women in the armed forces make to protect our freedoms as Americans. Several fifth grade students gave heartwarming speeches about what the veterans mean to them. All the children sang different patriotic songs, which accompanied a video of Bretton Woods’ loved ones

who have previously, or who currently are, serving in the U.S. Military. According to Bretton Woods Principal George Gagliardi, “it was a very inspirational and moving day for all.” Pines Elementary School also held a school-wide celebration for Veterans Day. Earlier last week, every

student “planted” an American flag in the front of the school and in the courtyard to beautify the grounds in honor of the school’s annual Veterans Day celebration. Pines Elementary School Principal Dr. Claudine DiMuzio and U.S. Marine Corps Veteran Doug Ruiz – who did a tour in Beirut, Lebanon and currently serves as the director of housing at the United Veterans Beacon House – spoke to the students about the meaning of Veterans’ Day and the courage demonstrated by the Americans who fought for our nation. Dr. DiMuzio encouraged students to learn from our veterans when she spoke about encouraging connections with past generations. “Boys and girls, if you have a relationship with a special veteran in your life, I urge you to spend time listening to their stories, to understand why we value our veterans so dearly and why we count on men and women like them, from all corners of our nation, to maintain our freedoms and our opportunities as citizens of this great country,” she stated. Pines students from each grade-level also sang patriotic songs to the guest veterans and each honored guest was presented with a rose from the Pines PTA. The PTA president also presented a check for $230 to the United Veterans Beacon House in Bay Shore, which came from Pines school community donations. “We are tremendously proud of the way our community came together to support our veterans who have worked tirelessly for our rights and freedoms,” said Dr. DiMuzio.

Hauppauge Elementary Schools were pleased to host numerous activities to honor the men and women in the United States armed forces who bravely serve our country both here and abroad. Recently re-elected Congressman Lee Zeldin provided the keynote address at Forest Brook Elementary School’s annual Veterans Day Ceremony, which honored approximately 35 service men and women. The Congressman himself served as a member of the United States Army and works tirelessly to protect the rights of veterans. The ceremony featured patriotic songs performed by Forest Brook students as well as studentread essays on “What Veterans Day Means to Me.” A very special highlight of the ceremony featured a video presentation from the mother of 2nd grade student Dylan Alexander who currently is serving in the United States Navy and is deployed in the Persian Gulf. “It’s important to remember that time and again, ordinary people have served our Nation in extraordinary ways so that all Americans can pursue the happiness our Founding Fathers envisioned,” stated Forest Brook Principal Kristen Reingold. “Thank you to the veterans who joined us [at Forest Brook] today. Your willingness to sacrifice for our country and to protect our freedoms have earned you our lasting gratitude.” Bretton Woods Elementary School’s annual Veterans Day Assembly paid tribute to 55 veterans – all of whom are related to students or staff members of the school.

Suffolk Approves Budget The Suffolk County Legislature recently voted 11-7 for a $2.9-billion county budget that eliminates proposed cuts, restores services and increases sales tax revenue projections for 2016 and 2017. Legislator Al Krupski joined with Republicans in opposition to the amendments to County Executive Steve Bellone’s proposed budget. The budget amendments will now head to County Executive Bellone’s desk for approval or veto. B u d g e t amendments, which were advanced by the bi-partisan Budget Working Group, restored the Public Health Nursing Bureau and the Tobacco Education and Control Program, which had been omitted from the

County Executive’s proposed fiscal package. In addition, income eligibility for day care was restored at the 2016 level of 125% for a family of four earning $30,375 annually, rather than 100% earning $24,300 annually – as proposed – to be more inclusive of those needing day care services. The lawmakers reduced fees, including charges for security alarm system fees and fines, and eliminated a 1% contract agency service fee and a proposed $25-increase in the tax map certification fee. Included in the omnibus bill is an increase in 2016 sales tax revenue from 0.85% to 1.16%, which equates to $4 million in 2016 and $4 million in 2017, and an increase in police district property taxes

of $500,000, reflecting an increase of 3.986%. The bill also reduces property taxes in the Southwest Sewer District by 33%. Legislators increased funding for overtime in the Sheriff’s department by $2.4 million, increased revenue from the Motor Vehicle Registration Surcharge, which will generate an additional $2 million, and increased an administrative fee on moving violations from $30 to $60. They also built in anticipated savings of $4.1 million based on a new RFP issued for the 2017 Employee Medical Health Plan. In a separate measure, legislators – in a bi-partisan vote – rejected a plan to borrow $26.7 million for police retirement pay. Presiding Officer DuWayne Gregory argued against the

bonding, which would require state approval. “I believe there is little to be gained as it would be very unlikely that the state legislature would agree to this,” said Presiding Officer Gregory. “It makes more sense to do it in house and resolve whatever the issues are through negotiations between the County Executive and the labor unions.” Presiding Officer Gregory said the county is prohibited from bonding for expenses that are part of the operating budget. Therefore, he included the costs for the retirement pay in a deferred salary line in the budget. Legislators Kara Hahn, Tom Cilmi, Thomas Barraga, Leslie Kennedy, Robert Trotta and Louis D’Amaro opposed the measure.
