Each Bretton Woods grade level performed patriotic songs, and for the grand finale, the entire student body sang “Proud to Be an American.” A video of former and current servicemen and women who are related to Bretton Woods’ staff also looped in the background throughout the program. “It was a memorable event for everyone. It gave all those in attendance a great sense of pride in our country and a lot for our students to reflect upon as we honor all of America’s veterans and current servicemen and women,” stated Bretton Woods Principal George Gagliardi.

The Smithtown Recreation Department and the Senior Citizen’s Department will cosponsor its award winning Tender Years Treasury program on Saturday, December 6th, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. This holiday shopping spree, for children in grades K through 5, will be held at the Eugene Cannataro Senior Center, 420 Middle Country Road, Smithtown. Featuring handcrafted gifts made by our local Senior Citizens, this unique event will give children the opportunity to choose that perfect gift for their loved ones. While Mom and Dad are enjoying coffee and cookies in a waiting area, Recreation staff members will escort children through the gift area, where they will make their own purchasing decisions. Free gift wrapping by the Senior Citizens ensures that each

present remains a surprise. Favorite activities of the day include craft making, cookie decorating and photo taking. There will be an upscale boutique for adults and a handcrafted quilt raffle. Santa and Mrs. Clause will also be visiting, so bring your camera and letters to Santa. The Tender Years Treasury, first introduced by the Recreation Department in 1982, earned a four-star Recreation review in 1988 and a National Creative Program Award that same year from the National Parks and Recreation Association. Thirty Commack High School student musicians will perform in the annual High School All-County Festival. Recognized for their exceptional talents in band, chorus, and orchestra, they were selected by the New York State Council of Administrators’ of Music Education – Suffolk County Chapter (N.Y.S.C.A.M.E./ Suffolk) and the Suffolk County Music Educators’ Association (S.C.M.E.A.). Students are chosen to perform in the All-County Band, Orchestra, Mixed Chorus, and the Women’s Chorus after auditioning for music educators. This rigorous judging evaluation process is based on the New York State School Music Association (N.Y.S.S.M.A) standards. “Performing in this yearly event is one of the highest honors a student can achieve on the county level. We are extremely proud to have these young talented musicians represent the music department in this, and

communities where all students feel safe, valued, and respected. We have had SUSS teams appear on News 12 and receive a national Character Education Partnership Award. Funding from the Long Island Community Foundation through its Youth Violence Prevention initiative has enabled CAPS to develop the website, expand the SUSS program, and share and publicize the work that school teams are doing towards creating safe school climates. “Now all Long Island students will be able to benefit from CAPS’ SUSS initiative, fostering positive school climates where all children can feel safe. CAPS announced today the launch of its SUSS (Students United for Safe Schools) website http:// suss.capsli.org to promote and expand its bullying prevention team building program for middle and high school students. This innovative program was designed and created through the CAPS Bullying Prevention Center and is the first of its kind in the region. While schools were closed to students on Election Day, November 4th, class was in session for teachers around Long Island, including in the Smithtown Central School District, where teachers, support staff and administrators participated in professional development workshops during Superintendent’s Conference Day. Held at High Schools East and West, Accompsett Middle School, Tackan

Elementary School, the New York Avenue Administration Center and various sites outside of the district, the conference consisted of sessions covering a myriad of topics, many of which were specialized for specific subject areas, all designed to enhance teaching and learning. Workshops covered areas such as health and wellness, safety, Common Core, curriculum updates, midterm preparation,

grade level assessments, technology, System 44 and Read 180 literacy programs, college and career exploration and social-emotional learning, a major focus for the 2014-2015 school year in the Smithtown CSD. The district also recently held a Parent University, which provided helpful workshops for Smithtown parents on a wide variety of topics associated with academics and educating the whole child.

Safety Responsibility Fifth-graders at Mt. Pleasant Elementary School in Smithtown are setting a good example for their schoolmates. They have been serving as bus safety patrol monitors at the end of the school day, assisting the 450 students at the school in finding and boarding their respective buses in a safe and efficient manner each day school is in session. “The bus safety patrol team is comprised of fifth-graders who possess strong leadership qualities and are skilled in working

cooperatively with others,” said Principal Joseph Ierano. “They are highly responsible individuals who work hard to achieve success both inside and outside of the classroom.” The opportunity is open to all fifth-grade students who choose to apply for the position. Interested students are required to fill out an application in which they must write a statement on behalf of their candidacy for the position. Their parents are also required to write a statement. In addition, student applicants must

obtain a recommendation from their fifth-grade teacher and two other teachers of their choice. Teachers rate a child’s candidacy based upon rubric criteria that focuses on leadership, responsibility and work ethic. A judging panel comprised of teachers, parents and school staff members evaluates all applications. Rain or shine, these fifthgraders are committed to making a valuable contribution to their school.

Getting Out The Vote

To teach young students about the democratic process and the importance of voting, all first-grade classes at the Smithtown School District’s Mills Pond Elementary School took part in a election to determine who will be

the next President of the Forest. First-grade teachers created political signs while students created voting hats and masks that depicted the respective candidates. Compelling arguments

were made over who should be elected to the Forest’s top office: the Bear, the Beaver or the Fox. Students casted their ballots and the Fox won, garnering a large portion of the electorate’s support.

SCOUTS HONOR VETERANS - A ceremony honoring our Veterans was held on November 11th at the Smithtown Veterans Plaza. Scouts from Troop 3 are proud to support our Veterans and Charter Organization, American Legion James Ely Miller Post 833. Scouts from the Troop presented the colors, led the Pledge of Allegiance, and raised flags representing each branch of the military at the ceremony.

Dinner In The Dark On September 27th, the Suffolk Independent Living Organization held their First Annual Dinner in the Dark Fundraising Event at the Sea Basin Restaurant in Rocky Point. The goal was to allow attendees to participate in a firsthand journey to appreciate the challenges encountered by the visually impaired as they strive to become more independent. As each person entered the restaurant they were led to a table and promptly blindfolded, which would lead to a unique sensory experience. Each table included a visually impaired person that helped each blindfolded individual go through the steps necessary to

successfully complete their meal in the same manner that would be utilized by a visually impaired person. One strategy that was used was the clock method to locate the food on the plate, in that the potatoes were located at 3 p.m., therefore allowing the person to successfully locate their food. The evening was a huge success with significant positive feedback from those in attendance at this unique event. SILO will be holding this event again next fall and we will be publicizing this event in the future. SILO is the New York State Designated Center for Independent Living Services. It is a non-for-

profit Human Services Agency dedicated to working with people with disabilities, elderly individuals and their families. SILO provides over 27 programs and services throughout the Long Island Region. The ultimate goal is to provide the necessary support for people with disabilities and the elderly to live independently within their communities. Adopt-A-Soldier The staff, residents and families of Island Nursing and Rehab Center collected food and other items to send to their new friends at the 106th Rescue Wing of Westhampton as part of the Adopt A Soldier program. The facility collected candy, gum, magazines, stamps, sunflower seeds, beef jerky, crossword puzzles, energy bars and granola bars, as well as financial donations to cover the cost of shipping. The items were collected and delivered this week to the 106th Rescue Wing so they could be mailed by the base to soldiers at

a location that cannot be revealed due to security reasons. In addition to the goodies, residents of the facility wrote letters to the soldiers, praising them for their work, saluting them, and offering them words of encouragement, comfort and gratitude. The 106th Rescue Wing deploys worldwide to provide combat search and rescue coverage for US and Allied forces. to utter that dreaded four-letter word as the temperatures drop each evening. Heck, even some retailers seem to have hit fast forward, starting their “Black Friday” sales the day after Halloween this year. Um… did we miss something? As far as I’m concerned, “winter” is still a few weeks out. There’s still plenty of turkey and trimmings to be enjoyed, leaf piles to jump into and mum plants to admire. The shopping and decorating and wrapping and cooking can wait a bit. There will be plenty of time for all that over the next

month or so. And then… well, then it’s just plain old winter. Slow down. Savor. Repeat for next season. It’s not that difficult. Perhaps if everyone wasn’t in such a great rush, there would be more time to accomplish things. Mindset is everything. In the meantime, enjoy the cool, crisp autumn air as you rake your leaves and plan the Thanksgiving menu for next week. Be thankful we have four seasons to enjoy, and be thankful for all those whom you are blessed to share them with.
