Concept to Creation By: Jamie Lynn Ryan It’s 5 o’clock on Friday the 13th, deadline day, “odd day” (11/13/15), whatever you want to call it… And here I am contemplating my column, the final piece of the puzzle that is the week’s work here at South Bay’s Neighbor Newspapers. By the time you read this, our holiday issue of Seasons™ Magazine will be on the streets, featuring the best of Long Island happenings, some highlights from New York City, and an array of helpful hints to make the shopping and decorating rush go as smoothly as possible. We have even mixed in a few recipes for you to sample at your next holiday gathering. For those unfamiliar with this sister publication,

Seasons™ Magazine is published five times a year – Winter, Spring, Summer, Autumn and (you guessed it) our very special Holiday issue. Commack Middle School’s seventh grade students showed their appreciation for the U.S. military by participating in an interdisciplinary activity in their social studies and English classes. Students wrote “thank you” letters to

soldiers, veterans, and a group known as the Blue Star Moms. The Blue Star Moms is an organization of mothers whose sons and/ or daughters are currently serving, or have served, in any branch of the U.S. military. Their mission is

Supporting Cancer Research Great Hollow Middle School in the Smithtown Central School District held a Coaches vs. Cancer fundraiser on November 2nd. Thanks to donations from students, teachers, staff and parents, the event raised more than $1,800 to

be donated to pancreatic cancer research. During the school day, students and staff dressed in purple for Pancreatic Cancer Awareness Month. After school, the football, field hockey, boys and girls soccer teams all

participated in games in honor of the effort. Close to 300 students stayed after school to watch the games, while PTA and student volunteers and members of the track team helped to collect donations.

Project 9 Line Smithtown High School West DECA students Courtney Grafstein and Rachel Chapman organized an assembly for 11th-grade students in conjunction with Project 9 Line honoring Veterans Day on November 10th. Grafstein and Chapman worked with Project 9 Line as part of their DECA community service manual. The two students

have organized a food drive, which collected almost 1,000 pounds of donations as well as a movie night fundraiser, which raised close to $700. The two juniors brought the comedy show assembly into their school so students could better understand veterans. “Veterans don’t often ask for help after they return from war because

they are so used to helping others,” Grafstein, who decided to work with the organization after meeting representatives at a DECA Leadership Conference, said. “Project 9 Line helps these veterans heal through humor, the arts and entrepreneurship and integrate themselves back into society.”

Smithtown High School East hosted more than 30 Long Island school districts for the seventh-annual Compassion Without Borders Conference on November 4th. The Suffolk County Principals Association sponsors the conference, themed “Leaders Training Leaders” this year. The goal of the

conference is to encourage students to become leaders who inspire and make a difference within their school and community. A small group of leadership students from each district gathered along with their peers for a day of activities, starting with a keynote presentation by guest speaker Ed Gerety. However, it remains uncommon for health plans to cover comprehensive addiction treatment, while unnecessary bureaucratic barriers often stand between someone receiving the help they need and remaining trapped in an overwhelming - and completely treatable disease cycle. In addition, the event’s Recovery Speaker, discussed her own

inspiring journey into and back out of the depths of addiction. Her story underlined the extremely treatable nature of addiction as a disease and offered hope to those who battle this illness or have a family member struggling with it. Tiffany’s submission, “The World Would Be a Better Place if Mr. Miller Was Still in It,” was selected to be a part of the NYS PTA Reflections Art Roadshow multimedia exhibit from October 17th through November 1st at the Cradle of Aviation Museum in Garden City. PUMPKIN FLING - The Hauppauge High School Technology Club won 2nd Place for Distance in the annual Long Island Pumpkin Fling Championship. The team competes under the name “The Hauppauge Hurlers.” Recently held at the Suffolk County Farm and Education Center in Yaphank, the Pumpkin Fling is “Long Island’s annual championship pumpkin catapult contest where students get a unique opportunity to experience the joys and trials of designing, building and operating sophisticated mechanical devices,” stated Technology Club Adviser Chris Dowd.”

The Bristal Assisted Living communities sponsored the play “A Piece of My Heart,” performed professionally at the Museum of American Armor at Old Bethpage Village Restoration. The play presented a powerful, true drama of five nurses who staffed field hospitals during the Vietnam War. Long Island organizations gathered at the first Progressive Vision for Long Island: Organizing for Success conference. This conference was organized by a new groundbreaking initiative called Long Island Progressive Network that brings together immigration, social justice, LGBTQ rights, environmental issues, labor rights, education, sustainable development and community organizations to work together to build power and to move progressive issues throughout Long Island, the state and the nation. The Conference is a historic event because it is the first time Long Island organizations explored what can happen if we bring together people from many different issue areas that all have an interest in creating positive change on Long Island. Bob Master, Assistant to the Vice President for Legislative, Political and Mobilization Activities for District One of the Communications Workers of America, kicked off the event by giving a national overview of labor struggles. Osteoporosis ( N A P S ) — Osteoporosis—bone loss— is a serious condition that half of all women and many men can expect to develop at some time in their lives. Fortunately, it can be detected and treated. In fact, women who have a bone density scan have 35 percent fewer hip fractures

Runs away from Time. Callously spreading, Stuck in its dateless decay. Everything consumed. There was no more choice. In the end, I surrendered, surrendered to Time. When will all men learn, never to stand in the way of the wrath of Time!
