Several of Broadway’s top veterans, star performers and musicians are spearheading a fundraiser for Nassau BOCES Long Island High School for the Arts (LIHSA). The production, Broadway Supports LIHSA, will feature popular musical numbers performed by Tony Award nominee Adam Pascal (known for his roles in RENT, Something Rotten!, Disaster!, Memphis, Aida, Cabaret and Chicago), Tony Award nominee Charl Brown (known for his roles in Motown the Musical, Sister Act and Jersey Boys) and Jackie Burns (known for her roles in Wicked, If/Then and the Tony Award-winning revival of Hair). The Broadway stars will sing, dance and share stories about their experiences in the arts. The event will take place on Monday, November 28th, from 7 to 9 p.m. in the Seymour Weiner

Spreading Kindness Branch Brook Elementary School in the Smithtown Central School District had a special visit from guest author Courtney Sheinmel on November 3rd. Sheinmel, who wrote the “Stella Batts” and “Zacktastic” series, visited with the third-, fourthand fifth-graders to speak

about the debut of her new book, “The Kindness Club: Chloe on the Bright Side.” Branch Brook students had the opportunity to purchase her new book, which debuted just a few days prior, and have it autographed by the author. Sheinmel spoke with the students about where her ideas and inspirations are

found, the writing and editing process, and some of the kindness initiatives she found while preparing for her latest book. Sheinmel spoke to the students about what kindness means to them and she compiled a list of ideas with the help of student suggestions.

Outdoor Learning Seventh-grade science classes at Great Hollow Middle School in the Smithtown Central School District spent the day participating in hands-on studies during an outdoor, interdisciplinary nature field trip on November 1st. The seventh-graders walked as a group to Charles P. Toner Park. Students were instructed to complete multiple interdisciplinary stations

outdoors. All the stations incorporated nature, using the senses, and allowed students to spend an entire day to appreciate the nature in their hometown. The students hiked up a fitness trail, taking temperature readings at six different experimental stations. They used a compass to find four different mystery locations throughout the park. Students used their math skills to determine

the age of a tree and wrote poetry about the nature around them. Taking their learning indoors, students walked to the Smithtown Public Library in Nesconset. The Great Hollow Middle School’s librarian worked with the Smithtown Public Library’s teen librarian to create a library-themed nature escape room.

Now that the election has come and gone, and we’ve all spent the better part of the last year weighing in with our thoughts and opinions on matters political, societal and purely personal, perhaps now is the time to take a step back and reset. Votes have been cast, ballots counted, and the country has spoken. Whether or not the outcome was to your particular liking, at this point, is, quite frankly, beside the point. The beauty of this country is that we do welcome the discourse, the open discussion of all topics, both mainstream and taboo. That said, yet another benefit to living in this nation is the

fact that democracy has sustained for nearly 250 years, in spite of those very polarizing viewpoints which have consumed our nation over the course of time. In that, there is a measure of victory, even in defeat. The debates which have been waged over the social media channels these last several months have been intense, to say the least. Families have been divided, friendships pushed to their limits, neighborhoods torn apart by protests, rallies and the like. Months of hatred and rage have been built up to the point of no return, in some cases. This is truly a shame. At no point should honest, open discussion be a negative to be avoided at all costs.

Never should disagreement dissolve into petty namecalling and insults, nor should anyone be written off for a mere difference of opinion. Uninformed ignorance? Perhaps. But not an educated analysis of the facts. And with that, we head into the next phase, the great unknown. Better that we should do this with the compassion and understanding that has made this country what it is, with a measure of respect for others, and with a sense of unity toward a common cause – the betterment of life for all those who reside here, as well as future generations to come. That, I believe, is a point we can all agree upon.

If your home is among them, you may care to heed these seven hints to keep your pet healthy from the experts at the American Veterinary Medical Association: 1. Maintain your pet at a healthy weight; 2. Exercise your pet; 3. Feed a balanced, nutritious diet; 4. Visit the veterinarian at least once a year to make sure your pet is healthy and to help detect problems earlier; 5. Vaccinate your pet against potentially deadly diseases such as distemper, parvo, panleukopenia and rabies; 6. Spay/neuter your dog or cat;

7. Keep your pet free of ticks and fleas. Fleas can be responsible for skin conditions such as flea allergy dermatitis in dogs and miliary dermatitis in cats. Fleas also transmit other parasites including tapeworms. Healthy Habits That Can Have a Lasting Impact A long and healthy life is the ultimate goal for many people. While a host of factors beyond a person’s control, such as genetics, impact how long that person lives and how susceptible to certain medical conditions he or she may be, there are many things men and women can do to improve their chances of living long, healthy lives:

Stay on your toes. A healthy diet is a key component of a healthy lifestyle, but diet alone is not enough to promote a long and healthy life. According to the Johns Hopkins Medicine Health Library, the risks associated with a physically inactive lifestyle are considerable. Such risks include a greater risk of developing high blood pressure and coronary heart disease and even a greater risk for certain cancers. In addition, physical inactivity can add to feelings of anxiety and depression. Inactivity tends to increase with age, so men and women aiming for

long and healthy lives should make physical activity a vital part of their daily lives. Get your whole grains. Whole grains may be another key ingredient to a long and healthy life. Numerous studies have shown that increasing whole grain consumption can help prevent the onset of type 2 diabetes. Researchers who conducted a systematic review of studies examining the link between whole grains and type 2 diabetes prevention in 2007 found that eating an extra two servings of whole grains per day decreased a person’s risk of developing type 2 diabetes by 21 percent. That’s an important ﬁnding, as additional research has found that people with diabetes have an increased risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease, a neurodegenerative

condition that can dramatically reduce quality of life. Visit your physician annually, if not more frequently. While many people, especially those who feel healthy, are hesitant to visit their physicians, doing so may just save your life. Several diseases,

including cancer and heart disease, are more effectively treated when detected early. Annual physicals and discussions with your physician may uncover a disease in its early stages when it is most treatable. Waiting until symptoms appear may not be too late to treat a condition or disease, but taking a proactive approach increases the likelihood of early detection, which increases your chances of living a long and healthy life. Healthy habits improve peoples’ quality of life while also increasing the likelihood that men and women live long, healthy and productive lives.

Be Smart About Antibiotic Use When used correctly, antibiotics and similar drugs known as antimicrobial agents can alleviate infections caused by various bacteria and some types of fungi and parasites. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says that these drugs have been used successfully for the last 70 years to treat patients with infectious diseases. But antibiotics cannot treat illnesses stemming from viruses, which include most colds and the ﬂu. As effective as antibiotics can be, antibiotic resistance is a growing problem. The CDC reports that at least two million people become infected with bacteria that have become resistant to antibiotics, and roughly 23,000 people die each year as a result of these types of infections. An April 2014 report

strep throat, urinary tract infections or ear infections. Take a wait-and-see approach. Wait for lab results to come back for strep throat or other cultures to see if you need an antibiotic. Many viralbased illnesses will go away within two weeks’ time. Adhere to dosage guidelines. When prescribed antibiotics for an infection, take them as directed, making sure you complete the dosage cycle. Do not stop simply because you feel better. Stopping early may not be enough to effectively kill the bacteria and may contribute to resistance in the future. Antibiotic abuse and resistance are concerns that can be addressed by becoming informed and making smart medication choices.
