Helping to do their part in “kicking” cancer to the curb, Great Hollow Middle School in the Smithtown Central School District held its eighth annual Coaches vs. Cancer event on Oct. 4. Both on and off the athletic fields, Great Hollow Middle School’s students, faculty, coaches and spectators joined together in the fight against cancer. Throughout the day, students and faculty dressed in yellow to show their awareness of childhood cancer. As part of the fundraising event, students could purchase a t-shirt or a wristband for an entrance on one of several games taking place that afternoon. The field hockey, football, and boys and girls soccer took to the field to

There are many ways that individuals just like you can get involved with Long Island Cares. You can volunteer with the organization, even if it is just for a few hours, to help make a difference in the lives of others. Volunteers can participate in the following areas: Warehouse Sorting & Repacking (lifting is required), Clerical Tasks, Mobile Pantry, Food Pantries, Special Events, Food Drives or their Student Volunteer Corps. They ask that you provide the following specific items in order to provide a Long Island family with a full Thanksgiving meal: - 4 cans of vegetables - 4 cans of fruit - 1 can of pumpkin or pie filling - 1 box/bag of stuffing - 1 box of mashed potato mix - 1 jar/can/packet of gravy - 1 can of cranberry sauce - 1 box of dessert mix (cake/cookie/ muffin) - OPTIONAL: Turkey (please put in a separate bag if you wish to donate this) Donations should be double bagged or in a reusable bag and delivered to their office located at 10 Davids Drive Hauppauge, NY 11788. All donations must be delivered no later than November 20th and must be dropped off between the hours of 8:30AM and 3:30PM Monday - Friday. JAMES JOINS FIGHT AGAINST BULLYING - In conjunction with National Bullying Prevention month in October, students and staff at St. James Elementary School in the Smithtown Central School District celebrated Unity Day on Oct. 23. Unity Day is a nationwide celebration of tolerance, inclusion and togetherness. The EPIC club advertised for Unity Day by creating posters and making announcements throughout the week. Another Organization You Can Get Involved With: Help Mrs. Claus www.helpmrsclaus.com www.facebook.com/helpmrsclaus Help Mrs. Claus is a 501(c)(3) non profit organization, which answers Christmas wishes that are gathered from children in need. These children are living in NYC through the Harlem Dowling agency, a charity helping children succeed since the 1880’s. The Christmas wishes are first written out in the children’s Letters to Santa. Then Help Mrs. Claus steps in and helps to fulfill these wishes. Since inception 9 years ago, Help Mrs. Claus has granted over 2,000 wishes, but they will not stop there! They are currently in the process of gathering gift donations for the upcoming Holiday Season. With plenty of children in need, they are still looking for volunteers and donations. New York’s blood supply has never been lower, and New York Blood Center (NYBC) is urgently calling for donors. There has been a significant decline in regular blood donors, and the region’s supply has reached critically low levels. In order to maintain a safe blood supply, a seven-day inventory of all blood types must be continually replenished. Right now, reserves are below that minimum. October has always been the month to recover, to take a breath and know our blood supply will rebound after the tough summer months. Unfortunately, this year, that is not the case. KINDERGARTNERS GET SCHOOLED ON FIRE SAFETY - In conjunction with Fire Prevention week, kindergartners at Mt. Pleasant Elementary School in the Smithtown Central School District traveled across the street to their local firehouse for a lesson on fire safety on Oct. 8. Firefighters talked about the importance of practicing fire drills, having working fire alarms at home and what to do if a fire emergency occurs. The students learned not to hide or be afraid of firemen if they come into their home. Students had the opportunity to tour the inside of the fire truck and ambulance and had a lesson on the different functions of the hoses on the truck.
