n Friday, November 1st, Smithtown High School East held its 4th Annual Pumkin Chuckin’ Competition in windy but mild conditions in the HSE commons courtyard. For the third year in a row, Nick McMahon had the farthest pumpkin chuck, with a chuckin’ distance of 16.6 meters. The most creative design went to the Christina Price, Kathy Helgans and Shannon Ross team, whose catapult design made use of a shovel in a bucket.

The gastronomic tradition known as the “Great Chefs of Long Island,” benefiting Family Service League (FSL), will be held on Sunday, December 8th from 2 to 5 p.m. at the Crest Hollow Country Club in Woodbury. Always a festive and exciting afternoon, Great Chefs is an important fund raiser, helping more and more Long Island children and families in need. Over 40 of LI’s top restaurants, from Long Beach to the Hamptons, will present their best during an afternoon of decadent tastings and delicacies. There will be wonderful wines from Long Island vineyards to pair with culinary selections. In addition, guests will be able to shop for unique designer gifts at the auction. Waiting to hear back from a college is stressful! After applying “early decision” to a toptier college last month, I have begun the nervewracking time period that can only be likened to purgatory. Waiting for that admissions packet to land in my mailbox is truly the most anxiety provoking task that I have ever been subjected to. As tortuous as it was to apply to college, the wait is so much more stressful. Now that I have applied, I am starting to realize that my whole life has been a road leading up to this point. Every decision, every action

I have ever taken, will boil down to one letter. One decision. Whether I get accepted, rejected or even waitlisted, the decision from that university will shape the rest of my life. Some say it is all luck. Even if you are a stellar candidate, you still have a shot at rejection. I like to think that I am what many would call a “wellrounded student.” I am good in school, I have decent test scores, I am on a sport, I am involved in many clubs and I wrote a decent essay. Sadly, if I get rejected, none of these factors will matter. They wouldn’t carry any weight.

Even if you were to try your whole life to be exactly what a college would desire, you could still get turned down. There is no guarantee of admission. The entire college admissions process is one big gamble. If you don’t get in, it was not meant to be. If that particular college does not want you, another college will. The point that I am trying to make is that if you don’t get in, don’t sweat it. The place you spend your four years does not define you. Everything always works out for the best.

The Age Of Innocence By: Jamie Lynn Ryan To be a child once again, that carefree spirit, unconcerned by the world outside of our miniature universe – one of Barbie dolls and tea parties and recess and school friends – shielded from the stress of reality for as long as our parents can protect us. Back to that sense of innocence when we assumed that all those “best” friendships from elementary school would never fade… when we never anticipated a day that those relatives we loved so dearly would ever leave us… when all was right with the world – our world – and

we had no need or desire to look beyond the immediate. Some would say this sense of idealism was misplaced and only served to make the subsequent realities that much harsher; in fact, just a quick look at the children of today would suggest a great loss of that innocence I reminisce over now. And which is better? To grow up jaded, or to develop that cynicism over time? Or, better yet, to not let outside forces beyond our control shape our being to the point of losing our sense of self in the process? If only the right answer was always the simplest. So we grow up, and we

grow. And we realize that each day brings with it new obstacles and reality checks that we may have never anticipated. But this is life, as childhood becomes adulthood, and ultimately, this growth is all part of that process. We can’t have it any other way – and we shouldn’t want to. People come into our lives for a reason, this much is true. Sometimes they stay, other times they go; but either way, we are never meant to be the same. Although, there are definitely days when we could all use a little time on the swings at recess with our friends.

DURANGO Retriever mix, 2 years-old; loves people and other dogs On October 24th, Alzheimer’s Disease Resource Center, Inc. (ADRC) held its 30th Anniversary Gala at JEWEL by Tom Schaudel in Melville. The event raised over $50,000 for ADRC. This year’s honorees were Mark Ordan, chief executive officer of Sunrise Senior Living, and Dignity Home Care. Mr. Ordan was recognized for his work and commitment for caring for those with Alzheimer’s Disease. He joined Sunrise Senior Living in 2008 as the company’s chief administrative and investment officer. He was later named CEO in November 2008. Prior to working at Sunrise Senior

Living, he was the CEO of the Mills Corporation, Fresh Fields Markets, and Balducci’s. He also serves as the Director of the Greater Washington Board of Trade, and is a founding member of the Young Presidents’ Organization’s National Capital Area Chapter. Sunrise Senior Living offers many programs for the elderly including assisted living services, independent living, short-term rehabilitation services and care for those with memory loss or Alzheimer’s Disease. Dignity Home Care is an agency that assists senior citizens with care services that they would

need at home, 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The staff consists of nurses and caregivers that provide the utmost support for the elderly in Nassau, Suffolk. Queens, the Bronx, Staten Island, New York City and Westchester. Those in attendance enjoyed a VIP reception, raffles, a silent auction, Viennese hour and live music by Playground, which is ranked as the No. 1 Four Seasons tribute band. Champions Of Children The Child Care Council of Suffolk, Inc. (CCCS) held its Champions of Children luncheon at the Crest Hollow Country Club in Woodbury, New York on October 18th. The event paid tribute to two Long Island champions: Ken Rosenblum, associate dean for administration and director of the Veterans’ and Service Members’ Rights Clinic at Touro Law Center, and Dr. Shaun L. McKay, president of Suffolk County Community College (SCCC). “We are grateful to all our luncheon attendees. The proceeds from this event help support our

vital programs and services for children, child care providers and the community,” stated Janet Walerstein, CCCS executive director. The honorees spoke about the importance of the Child Care Council of Suffolk’s mission as the guardians of the future – our children. Associate Dean Rosenblum paralleled the Soldier’s Creed – no one is ever left behind – to the work that CCCS does for the children of Suffolk County. Dr. McKay echoed this sentiment by emphasizing the importance of making the investment to ensure

that safe, high-quality child care is available to everyone who needs it. This commitment is evidenced by the availability of child care to employees and students at SCCC College. He also spoke about how high-quality child care and early childhood education offer myriad benefits to educational institutions and to society. The CCCS luncheon attendees also enjoyed an inspiring musical performance by the Commack High School Independent Creative Arts Jazz Ensemble.

Scout Retreat Weekend Members of local scout troops were among those attending the annual Diocesan Catholic Boy Scout Retreat on the weekend of October 25th, held at the Seminary of the Immaculate Conception in Huntington where the program followed the theme of “Belong More Deeply.” As reported by Kim Fontaine of Patchogue, one of the volunteer adult scouting leaders, “It was an awesome weekend. Congratulations to the Committee who put in a lot of hard work to make this retreat a success. Thank you to the Priests and Seminarians who joined us, it wouldn’t have been the same without you!” There were 110 people were in attendance at the retreat including scouts, volunteer Diocesan staff and volunteer adult scouting leaders. Of the 110, more than 70 participants were Boy Scouts and Co-Ed Venturers. The youth participated in the retreat program which was run by Scouts, and Seminarians from both the Diocese of Rockville Centre and the Archdiocese of New York. are Eagle Scouts). At the campfire program, scouts participating in the retreat weekend put on skits and did songs led by MC Ray Stumpf of Boy Scout Troop 7 (St. James). On Sunday, prior to leaving for home, Morning Prayer was prayed. It was led by Eagle Candidate AJ Cannatella (Manhasset), and Eagle Scouts Nelson and Christian da Luz (Commack). After prayer, a presentation about the St George trek was made by Eagle Scout Max Jacobs (Suffolk Crew 333, Centereach), Venturer Sara Jacobs, President of Suffolk Crew 333 (the first female selected to attend the St George Trek by the Diocesan Catholic Committee), AJ Cannatella (Nassau Crew 333, Hicksville) and Nelson and Christian da Luz (Crew 324, Commack). The St George Trek, which takes place at Philmont Scout Ranch in New Mexico, brings Catholic high school youth from around the country together with selected Priests, Religious, and Seminarians for eleven days of backpacking in the context of a vocation retreat. The Venturers at the 2013 Catholic Committee on Scouting’s Annual Retreat related details about their individual encounters with God on a top of Mount Baldy, the pinnacle and goal of all St. George Trekkers. Each participant received a special commemorative patch for the 2013 Catholic Scout Retreat Weekend.

Physician Of Excellence Suffolk REMSCO (Suffolk Regional Emergency Medical Service Council) extended their congratulations to Dr. Augustus Mantia for being awarded the 2012 Physician of Excellence. Dr. Mantia was honored at their annual Awards Dinner and Ceremony Event on November 1st. The Smithtown and Hauppauge regions were crippled as Hurricane Sandy tore down trees and power lines throughout the area and flooded Long Island Sound beaches. In the wake of the recovery, the news was moving so fast it may be hard to keep track. The Hauppauge Fire District was very proud to call Fire Department surgeon Dr. Augustus Mantia and submit him for recognition for 2012’s New York State Emergency Medical Services Council (REMSCO). As a volunteer, Dr. Mantia oversees all medical response and protocols for the Emergency Medical Response Teams and defibrillator programs for the Hauppauge Fire Department. In addition, he responds to fire department calls to assist when his medical expertise may be needed. His medical expertise was much needed and he responded to the calls of both the local fire departments and the Suffolk County Police Department during Hurricane Sandy.

On the day of the hurricane, he rode around with the Suffolk County Police Department checking in on as many communities that needed his assistance many days risking his life with only one thought in mind; if medical help was needed for a person in the community he would be there to help, especially knowing that most hospitals were up to and over capacity with incoming

Personally, at his home in Smithtown, he and his family had no electricity for 11 days. He left his family, knowing they would be safe and neighbors would be checking in on them, risking his own life and volunteering his medical services to those in need. During the aftermath of the hurricane he remained on call with the Hauppauge Fire Department if his assistance was needed. There was never a time that was ever more paramount in his mind as to the oath he took as a physician, and that was to take care of and save the lives of others. On July 23rd, 2008, Dr. Mantia was appointed as a Deputy Fire Coordinator-Medical Doctor for the County of Suffolk and on July 9th, 2008, he was selected for appointment to the position of Critical Incident Police Surgeon for the Suffolk County Police Department. His appointment followed successful completion of critical training in FEMA Incident Management, Weapons of Mass Destruction, Police Field Operations and Protocols and certification as a Field Physician by the Suffolk County Department of Health Division EMS. Rotary Guest Speaker On Thursday, November 7th, The Rotary Club of Smithtown-Sunrise guest speaker was Dr. Daniel Schwartz, MD, FACS/Medical Director with St. Catherine of Siena Hospital, Smithtown, New York...who gave a presentation on “Harms of Smoking and Benefits of Quitting.” The Doctors key talking points were: (1.) Smoking harms nearly every organ of the body and diminishes a person’s overall health. Smoking is a leading cause of cancer and death from cancer. It causes cancers of the lung, esophagus, larynx, mouth, throat, kidney, bladder, pancreas, stomach and cervix, as well as acute myeloid leukemia (l,2). Smoking also causes heart disease, stroke, aortic aneurysm, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) (chronic bronchitis and emphysema), asthma, hip fractures, and cataracts. Smokers are at higher risk of developing pneumonia and other airway infections. A pregnant smoker is at higher risk of having her baby born too early and with an abnormally low birth weight. A woman who smokes during or after pregnancy increases her infant’s risk of death from Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS). Men who smoke are at greater risk of erectile dysfunction. Cigarette smoking and exposure to tobacco smoke cause more than 440,000 premature deaths each year in the United States. Of these premature deaths, about 40 percent are from cancer, 35 percent are from heart disease and stroke, and 25 percent are from lung diseases. (2.) Inhaling secondhand smoke causes lung cancer in nonsmoking adults. Approximately 3,000 lung cancer deaths occur each year among adult nonsmokers in the United States. Exposure to secondhand smoke may increase the risk of heart disease by an estimated 25 to

30 percent. (3.) Tabacco smoke contains chemicals that are harmful to both smokers and nonsmokers. Of the more than 7,000 chemicals in tobacco smoke, at least 250 are know to be harmful, including Hydrogen Cyanide, Carbon Monoxide, and Ammonia. Of the 250 known harmful chemicals in tobacco smoke, 69 can cause

cancer. These cancer-causing chemicals include: Arsenic, Benzene, Beryllium, Butadiene, Cadmium, Chromium, Ethylene Oxide, Nickel, Polonium and Vinyl Chloride. Other toxic chemicals that are suspected to cause cancer are, Formaldehyde, Benzo{a}pyrene, and Toluene. (4.) The long term benefits of quitting smoking are reducing the risk of cancer and other diseases, such as heart disease and COPD caused by smoking. Studies have shown that smokers who quit at age 30 reduce their chance of dying prematurely from smoking related disease by more than 90 percent....by age 50 by 50%...and by age 60 or older live longer than those who continue to smoke. cancer from smoking cigarettes depend on many factors, including the number of years a person smokes, the number of cigarettes smoked per day, the age at which they began smoking, and whether or not they already are ill at the time of quitting. For those who have been smoking and have been diagnosed with cancer and are having surgery, chemotherapy, or other treatments, quitting smoking helps improve the body’s ability to heal and respond to therapy. It also lowers the risk of pneumonia and respiratory failure and may lower the risk of the cancer returning or a second cancer developing. To mark the anniversary of the National Cancer Act, the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) has launched CancerProgress.Net (www.cancerprogress. net), an interactive website demonstrating four decades of progress against cancer. The site offers information about major advances in cancer treatment, prevention and diagnosis.

The $11 million marsh restoration project will restore and enhance 432 acres of salt marsh at the Wertheim and Seatuck National Wildlife Refuges and the Lido Beach Wildlife Management Area, in the Long Island towns of Shirley, Islip and Hempstead in Suffolk and Nassau Counties. Restoration and mitigation projects are part of a comprehensive, multiagency Hurricane Sandy Resiliency plan that Department of the Interior Secretary Sally Jewell recently announced in advance of the storm’s one-year anniversary. The refuge has just begun project planning and will update the community as contracts are awarded and work moves forward. Long Island refuges include 6,500 acres of important nesting, wintering and migratory stop-over locations for hundreds of species of birds, and hosts 465,000 visitors annually. The refuges also protect threatened and endangered species, fish and other wildlife, and serve as natural extreme weather buffer zones for many of the island’s populated areas. The company is a small, minorityowned business based in Edgewood, NY. It has worked with the federal government on major environmental projects including Hurricane Katrina response and remediation at Superfund sites, and has committed to hiring local workers and supporting local businesses. Coastal Environment Group will begin with aerial and ground damage assessments to develop a project plan. Debris removal should begin in the next few weeks. SavATree, a tree removal company with offices in Brookville and Southampton, NY, will remove downed trees that are causing public safety hazards at several refuges. Tree removal will begin in the next few days. Both companies will take precautions to minimize environmental damages during the project. Service biologists and independent project inspectors will advise crews and monitor progress. For safety considerations, it may be necessary to close national wildlife refuge areas during periods of heavy work. The public will be notified of any closures in advance.

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (Service) has received almost $15 million in Hurricane Sandy recovery appropriations for coastal cleanup and marsh restoration at national wildlife refuges on Long Island. Contracts have been awarded to fund debris and downed tree removal. The Service will use the majority of the funding - $11 million - to restore marshes at three national wildlife refuges, improving the resiliency of the Long Island coast against future storms. An additional $1 million will be invested in projects to repair visitor facilities and Service assets damaged during the super storm. “The marshes at Long Island refuges helped to protect inland areas from the full brunt of Hurricane Sandy,” said refuge manager Michelle Potter. “We will focus our restoration efforts on returning the ecological functions of these marshes by removing invasive plants, allowing native plants to return and restoring natural tidal flows. The restoration efforts will provide important wildlife habitat and enhance the refuges’ value for coastal protection.” The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service has awarded contracts to two New York companies to begin cleanup and tree removal efforts at eight

This recognition was the culmination of a combination “learning/ hands-on applications” time management and training course that is available to its adult scouting volunteer leaders

Huntington Station resident Tammy Campagnola-Levinsky serves as Assistant Scoutmaster in Boy Scout Troop 218 (Huntington Station), and as a member of the Executive Board of Suffolk County Council BSA. Huntington resident Kurt Rosenhagen is the Scoutmaster of Boy Scout Troop 218 (Huntington) They participated in two weekend-long outdoors sessions in the Wood Badge Course N7-386-12. The course was conducted in September and October of 2012, and for the first time, the group-participation

instructional section was shared between Schiff Scout Reservation of Nassau’s Theodore Roosevelt Council and Baiting Hollow Scout Camp of the Suffolk County Council. In order to complete the training, the scouting volunteer leaders had to apply what had been learned in a variety of self-directed goals (the practical part of the course) within 18 months, which was accomplished in the summer of 2013. This was the “Wood Badge for the 21st Century -- a new and updated Wood Badge Course, which was in place since 2001.”

The Hauppauge High School Technology Club took second place among all Long Island high schools teams that competed at the Long Island Pumpkin Fling Championship. The Team, which competes under the name “The Hauppauge Hurlers,” was able to hurl a pumpkin 516 feet! Recently held at the

Suffolk County Farm and Education Center in Yaphank, the Pumpkin Fling is “Long Island’s annual championship pumpkin catapult contest where students get a unique opportunity to experience the joys and trials of designing, building and operating sophisticated mechanical devices,”

stated Chris Down, Hauppauge High School teacher and technology club adviser. “Teams in our Youth and Adult divisions built a catapult or other propulsion device to fling a three to five pound pumpkin into an open field – with the Hauppauge Hurlers Club handily winning second place!”

Hauppauge High School recently enjoyed a visit from three active duty Marines and four Marine veterans – from WWII on through the war in Afghanistan – who shared their experiences and answered students’ questions. According to Social Studies Teacher Deborah Surian, “I invited soldiers from various wars through the decades to speak to my Social Studies classes. My students got a sense of history firsthand as well as a better understanding of why we honor the men and

women who proudly serve our nation.” “While it was an honor to welcome all of the servicemen, I was particularly pleased that Frank Susczynski – who is 87 years old and a WWII and Korean War veteran – was able to join us,” said Surian. “My students were very engaged with the soldiers and enjoyed the stories that they shared.” Joe Cacioppo told students that when he was in Iwo Jima, the foxholes that they dug were very warm due to the fact that Mt. Suribachi was an active

volcano. The students particularly enjoyed Don Dziomba’s Vietnam War “Shrimp Chow Mein” story. While Dziomba was with a Vietnamese family, he threw a grenade into the water and out popped shrimp, fish, etc., which were promptly cooked for dinner by the matriarch of the family. “We had each other’s backs,” was common theme among the Marines. “This should come as no surprise to all who are familiar with the Soldier’s Creed,” stated Surian.

Bully Prevention Project

Mr. Needles’ Smithtown HS East Media Classes have been working on an ongoing project this month as part of Bullying Prevention Awareness Month. On October 29th, the students had the opportunity to talk with actor/singer Nick Cannon (from NBC’s America’s Got Talent) and on October 30th, actor Brock Ciarlelli (from ABC’s The

Middle) about bullying. The performers talked to the students and invited guests who had person experiences with bullying via a video conference made possible by Skype in the Classroom and Google. The students will be creating a short public service announcement which follows-up on the anti-bullying video they created last year. The students have been working

with classes in Japan and Pakistan discussing the issues related to bullying as well as comparing and contrasting their own personal experiences through a Japan Society social media program entitled Going Global. The final public service announcement will include input from all the classes involved around the world.

Honoring Cancer Survivors

The Suffolk County Vanderbilt Museum has begun to renovate its Stoll Wing, home to preserved wild animal specimens brought back from around the world by Charles H. Stoll, a noted explorer and big-game hunter who was also a museum trustee and benefactor. The most visible part of the project will be the restoration of the 20 mounted animal heads that crown the wall above the diorama exhibition cases. George Dante, president of Wildlife Preservations of West Paterson, N.J., the taxidermist of choice for the American Museum of Natural History, took 20 of the heads back to his studio on October 30th to begin cleaning and restoring them. Other improvements include a new heating, ventilating and airconditioning system to insure preservation of the specimens. M. Speer Foundation, gave the Vanderbilt a gift of $100,000 to endow the restoration and modernization of the Stoll Wing and its dioramas. (The wing was built in 1970 to complement the adjacent Habitat Room built decades earlier by William K. Vanderbilt II.) Stephanie Gress, director of curatorial services for the Vanderbilt, said, “It’s very exciting to be able to have one of the world’s finest taxidermists undertake this project. It’s rare that we get the funding to do this. Since George was one of the taxidermists who accomplished the extremely difficult and spectacular restoration of our eight-ton, 32-foot whale shark -- the largest example of fish taxidermy in the world -- we naturally asked him if he would restore the Stoll Wing specimens.” The species -- from the American Northwest, Canada and Africa -include a zebra, blue wildebeest, caribou, sika deer, black bear, moose,

wapiti (a type of elk), bighorned sheep and a male and female Arctic walrus. The restoration work will be completed in two to three months. During George Dante’s visit to the Vanderbilt, he returned a rare Galápagos marine iguana to Mr. Vanderbilt’s original Habitat Room. The iguana’s return is an interesting footnote in the history of the Vanderbilt Museum. In the 1920s, Mr. Vanderbilt hired specialists from the American Museum of Natural History to create his Habitat Room, and they inserted his iguana into a diorama of Galápagos wildlife. Today, the Galápagos marine iguana is protected and cannot be collected. So, when the American Museum of Natural History needed a Galápagos marine iguana for one of its own dioramas, they asked Dante to borrow the Vanderbilt’s iguana, and he made a cast of it for the museum’s exhibit.

How To Decide If A Cat Is Right For You

(NAPSI)—Cats can be loving, loyal, feisty or fierce—and if you saw the hit movie “Puss In Boots,” then you know one cat can embody all those traits and more. Adopting a cat can be a “purrfectly” wonderful idea as long as you understand the commitment that comes along with it. Before bringing a cat home, consider these tips from Madeline Bernstein, president of the Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Los Angeles (spcaLA): • Evaluate your needs. Are you ready to make the commitment to a pet? Cats can live up to 18 years. On average, pet care costs about $400 a year.

• Visit a pet adoption center. Don’t shop when you can adopt. Shelters have many cats to choose from and adoption saves lives. • Questions? Ask the staff. The shelter staff can often tell you the animal’s personality traits, likes, dislikes, temperament, breed, and activity level. Keep your options open. A pet doesn’t have to be a kitten to be a loyal companion. • Patience. Be patient. You may need to visit the adoption centers a few times before you find the cat that’s right for you. • Decide as a family. Does the cat get along with everyone and how does everyone get along with

the cat? • You made a decision, now what? Here are some items you should have before bringing your new cat home: ID tag and breakaway collar, cat food, pet bowls (2), litter box (rule of thumb: one for each cat, plus one), litter and scooper, toys, treats, scratching post, cat carrier (for vet trips/ emergencies) and a plan for veterinary care. • We love our new cat, but we’re having some issues. Don’t give up. The solution may only require a slight adjustment in behaviors. spcaLA has an Animal Behavior Hotline at (888) SPCALA-1, x260 to answer pet behavior questions.

Caring For Granite Countertops (NAPSI)—Granite countertops are the most popular option available when it comes to kitchen or bathroom remodeling. Here are a few tips to help you protect your investment: • Seal your countertops: According to the Marble Institute of America, an industry group, granite countertops should be sealed so that the stone is more resistant to dirt and spills. Check with the manufacturer or retailer about the best kind of sealer to use on food preparation areas. • Be careful what

you clean with: Never use ammonia—based products-or cleaners containing vinegar, lemon or orange—on your granite countertops. Avoid abrasive cleaners such as dry or soft cleansers. Don’t use cleaning products that contain acid such as bathroom, grout, or tub and tile cleaners. Specialty granite cleaners can be used, but they can be expensive. Granite countertops can really add spark to a kitchen or bathroom. Proper care will keep them looking beautiful.

Scholarship Opportunity Suffolk Federal Credit Union is now offering local high-school seniors a chance to win scholarships for college.
