Free Seminar Set Two of the region’s most recognized authorities on childhood development are being brought together at a free seminar to help parents of young children assess and track their children’s intellectual growth and development. The session, offered on Thursday, November 13th at Holy Family Regional School in Commack, will feature Dr. Abigail Jewkes and Dr. Michael Sampson, both of St. John’s University. Attendees will be given tools, and the knowledge to use them at home during at the event. Dr. Abigail Jewkes is an Associate Professor of Early Childhood Education at St. John’s University in New York City. As an author of The Ounce Scale, an observational assessment for infants’ and toddlers’ growth, accomplishments, areas of difficulty, and temperament, Dr. Jewkes is uniquely qualified
to coach parents on developmental stages. In her presentation; ‘Simple Ways to Support Your Child’s Development’, Dr. Jewkes will share her extensive experience training early childhood educators in observationbased assessment. Dr. Michael Sampson is the Dean of the School of Education at St. John’s University and a prolific author. Dr. Sampson is a New York Times best selling co-author of 22 books for young children, including Chicka, Chicka, 1, 2, 3 and The Bill Martin Jr. Big Book of Poetry. Dr. Sampson has written university textbooks, been published in leading peerreviewed journals, and developed curriculum materials. He currently serves on the editorial board of The Journal of Teacher Education. His

Student Spotlight SMART SAFETY? They’re bright yellow, they sit around your child’s neck and they are the main reason as to why your child complained the first two weeks of school more than any other year prior. The new Massapequa High School student ID lanyards are known to everyone in the school as a cumbersome burden that serves no real and effective purpose. This new form of “security and safety enforcement,” as Doctor Barbra Williams puts it, “is to make sure that the security staff can prevent unwarranted intruders from entering the school.” Robert Catinella, a Massapequa High School Senior, compares the new lanyards to “dog collars” and, just like a dog, when a student forgets his collar, he or she is subjected to unfair punishment. When one person forgets his or her “collar,” they are given a lunch

detention, meaning that they cannot go outside for lunch for the day. In addition, that lunch detention can be found on one’s permanent record. For some kids, this could mean everything when it come to getting into a good college. Who is to say that these lanyards, and the supposed purpose they serve, will even be a factor in a high stakes situation? If the school district wants to increase safety, they need to increase security, not tag their students with an ID card that serves no other purpose other than to act as a red flag for security guards. And, to be completely honest, a yellow nylon lanyard isn’t going to stop any one crazy person from getting into a school building. Rumors have been circulating in the building between the staff and students that these lanyards will soon have a magnetic strip in them, which will be required
to be used in order to enter the school. Teachers have to do this in the morning to gain access into the building before the students. Along with every student arriving in the middle lobby for all periods, this new policy, if implemented for the 2015-2016 school year, would make an already broken system chaotic and inefficient. Massapequa School District is not alone in this new wave of “smart safety.” Students in Farmingdale, Amityville and Copiague high schools are being subjected to this plague too. The only way to fix the problem of school safety is to actually address the issue properly and efficiently. In this post Sandy Hook school shooting society we live in, we must not forget that, as a community, we should be pushing for safety and not some false sense of security.

Hauppauge Middle School students recently learned about the Mexican celebration Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead). Dia de los Muertos is a holiday observed throughout Mexico and around the world in other cultures. The holiday focuses on gatherings of family and friends to pray for and to remember
friends and family members who have died. Teacher Meghan Anschutz set up a typical altar in her classroom to show students how Mexican families celebrate the holiday with their loved ones. Two students prepared Pan de Muerto (Dead Man’s Bread), which is the traditional food of the holiday.
Several students also made papel picado (cut paper), which is a popular decoration seen in Mexico at this time of the year, while other students chose to transform themselves into a “skull” using the website. “My students really enjoyed learning about this special holidays and its traditions,” said Anschutz.

Students also volunteered as guides to ensure parents unfamiliar with HSW made it to their respective classrooms on time. Workshops tackled subjects such as the positives and pitfalls of social media, active listening, homework help, stress/anger management, how to help children think more like entrepreneurs, healthy eating, helping children with different special needs, finding the right college for your child and many more.
“This year’s Parent University was a tribute to the power of our parentschool partnership,” Bradshaw said. “The PTA, SEPTA, teachers, administrators and community organizations all got together to offer parents the best of current research and practices for raising healthy, productive, resilient children. Parent evaluation comments ranged from ‘I learned so much!’ to ‘I wanted to attend so many workshops!’ The PTA and the district are already planning to offer repeat workshops to meet the enthusiastic demand for more.”
Kindergarten rooms at Dogwood Elementary School in Smithtown were recently transformed into clinics for teddy bears and other dolls. Jane McCormack, the trauma program manager at Stony Brook University Hospital, and injury prevention outreach coordinator Kristi Ladowski, along with help from parents and teachers, held a teddy bear clinic
at the school. Parents of kindergartners were asked to send their children to school with a teddy bear or stuffed animal, and the children had the opportunity to diagnose their teddy bears or dolls with an illness or injury and learn to address them with the correct treatment. Children recreated some of the facilities at a real hospital, including a waiting room, a triage
station, an exam room and a pharmacy where bandages and other “medicines” were dispensed. “Teddy bear clinics are a fun and interactive way to teach children about health and wellness,” said Principal Renee Carpenter, who joined in the activity. “They also help to reduce or alleviate any fears of visiting doctors.”

Haunted Hallways Parents, faculty, staff and student volunteers from Branch Brook Elementary School in Smithtown created a variety of spooky Halloween scenes for all to enjoy as the school welcomed students and
their families to an evening of Haunted Hallways on October 17th. Some of the interesting sets and activities that visitors walked through included a spooky car wash, a zombie triage,
graveyard volleyball and even Halloween-themed bocce ball. There was even a live re-enactment of “It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown” by a group of talented young thespians.

Nissequogue River State Park was damaged. Eager to have the pole and platform restored before next year’s nesting season, the Parks Department recently contacted PSEG Long Island for assistance. “NYS Parks mission is to balance patrons’ recreational activities with the protection of our natural resources. Replacing the damaged pole and platform does both of those beautifully,” said Wayne R. Horsley, Regional Director, Long Island State Park Region. “Ospreys are a favorite among park patrons and the project will provide another nest site for the NY State ‘Species of Concern.’ Parks appreciates the willingness of PSEG Long Island to restoring a nesting platform to NRSP.” The replacement of the damaged pole and platform provides a safe nesting area for the osprey away from vital electrical infrastructure, helping
PSEG Long Island maintain strong electric service reliability. Ospreys will often use utility poles and transmission structures for nesting, which jeopardizes system reliability, causes outages and damages equipment. Such nesting also puts the birds in danger of electrocution, as their large wingspan can complete the circuit between closely spaced energized equipment or between an energized wire and a neutral ground wire. Long Island is home to many species of birds, including the majestic osprey. Ospreys are large, beautiful birds and a popular sight on Long Island. From the 1950s through the 1970s, Long Island’s osprey population decreased and became endangered. The effort to build safe nesting sites on or near waterways has contributed to the rise in the population of osprey.

For the 5th year, the Jingle Bell 5K Run/ Walk, scheduled to take place in Long Island on Saturday, December 6th, will bring runners and families together to raise funds to fight and cure arthritis, the nation’s leading cause of disability. The annual festive event, which features a holiday costume contest, kids’ fun run, music and a sponsor expo, will be held at Hofstra University at 10 a.m. Registration begins at 8:30 a.m. Hundreds of Long Island residents including competitive and recreational runners, walkers, corporate teams and families are expected to participate in the Jingle Bell Run/Walk this year. The race is run on a USATF-certified 5K course with finisher awards in each age bracket. “Arthritis affects more than 50 million Americans, or roughly one in five adults,” said Jennifer Regan Haight, Regional Director of the Arthritis Foundation Long Island Chapter. “Contrary to popular belief, arthritis is not an ‘old person’s’ disease. Two-thirds of people with arthritis are under the age of 65.” More than 300,000
children also live with arthritis including tenyear-old Sean Carlo, this year’s Jingle Bell Run Youth Honoree, who was diagnosed with juvenile arthritis at age four. “When people think of arthritis, they automatically think of minor aches and pains, which is far from the truth,” said Regan Haight. “Various forms of arthritis can seriously affect joints, muscles, internal organs and eyes, and the disease claims the lives of nearly 10,000 people each year.” Voted as one of the nation’s “Most Incredible Themed Races,” the Jingle Bell Run/Walk helps the Arthritis Foundation raise funds to discover better treatments and a cure for arthritis. “You ring in the holiday season, enjoy the camaraderie of family, friends, and other runners, and you are supporting an important cause,” ReganHaight said. Research Symposium On October 6th, eight members of the St. John the Baptist GENESIS program presented their own research projects to over 70 guests, students, family members and faculty at the first St. John the Baptist Scientific Research Symposium.
