Perplexity of Perception By: Jamie Lynn Ryan I find it truly fascinating how individuals can come away with such varying perspectives on the same topic, time and time again. Whether it be politics, societal issues or even something so lighthearted as this very column, everyone is entitled to their opinion – it’s just interesting how that view is arrived upon. Intelligent argument is one thing; shameless bullying quite another. For some, there doesn’t seem to be a middle ground. I suppose these polarizing issues are what make our world go ‘round. Discussion is the basis of everything, from school classrooms to kitchen tables to podiums
and soapboxes. Especially in this day and age of instant feedback, rarely can an opinion be expressed without an opposing argument cropping up almost immediately. Written forums are the best – or worst, as the case may be – since they afford people the anonymity of expressing often insulting, uneducated retorts. There is something about faceto-face conversation that affords a measure of respect, begrudging though it may be. Personally, I feel this world is full of enough tragedy and conflict without the need to touch on it in this column. South Bay’s Neighbor Newspapers has always been a forum for celebrating our local school and community
happenings, of offering parents, teachers and coaches the opportunity to spotlight their children – the next generation of up-and-coming debaters. If you’re searching for controversy, there are plenty of mediums to find it. This need not be one of them. It seems to me that, whatever your lot in life, the best approach is always an objective one. Listen before you speak; think before you write; and respect before you reproach. Children learn what they see, and live what they learn; and there is more than enough hatred to go around without bringing it into the home or classroom, onto the field or stage. We, the adults, are the example. Let’s create one we can be proud to pass on.

Suffolk Federal is now offering local highschool seniors a chance to win scholarships for college. Suffolk Federal will award scholarships of $1,500 each to ten young deserving members. One scholarship winner will also receive an additional $2,500 scholarship provided by the LT Michael P. Murphy Memorial Scholarship Foundation which Suffolk Federal will match for a total of $5,000. To be eligible, students must be high-school seniors attending twoor four-year accredited educational institutions for the first time in the fall of 2016. They must also be a member of Suffolk Federal. Applicants will be judged based upon their academic achievements, extracurricular and community activities as well as the quality of written essays. Last year, Suffolk Federal awarded $20,000 in scholarships. “Each year, we welcome

During the fall, high school seniors from all over the world fill out their applications and make their college decisions. For me, it turned out to be an easy choice. I have decided to apply early decision to the University of Miami. Only time will tell if my dream of attending “The U” will become a reality. I am looking forward to potentially spending the next four years alongside my brother, who is currently a sophomore at the University of Miami. Although he transferred there - and I’m applying straight out of high school -

I am excited to undertake the next chapter of my life, and I can only hope that chapter takes places in Coral Gables. When I attended the Manhattan Information Session on October 22nd, I was amazed by the presentation. The speakers detailed the financial aid process, the historic football dynasty and the stellar academic reputation associated with the University of Miami.
He was happy to answer all the questions that I had regarding the admissions process and left me feeling comfortable about my choice to apply early decision. I was impressed with how knowledgeable and professional he was. I would recommend attending an information session like this to anyone interested in applying to institutions of higher education, and more specifically, The U. That evening truly sealed the deal; I want to be a Miami Hurricane in the fall of 2016.

On behalf of the Council for Prejudice Reduction (CPR), the College of
Business at Stony Brook University (SBU), and the community of educators dedicated to helping all children learn well, stay safe, graduate and participate in rewarding lives, CPR Executive Director Roberta Richin thanked Fletcher for her “impassioned, eloquent, inspiring contribution to our panel discussion regarding the already

specific and actionable, your vision and values were as transparent as they were appealing, and your determination to give all students more diverse opportunities to make their dreams came true drove a number of our participants to wish that you were the principal of the school attended by their children.” Richin also stated that she is “optimistic that the conversation at the conference will be part of a larger and locally-driven endeavor to generate for public education a shared body of knowledge, a common vocabulary, a code of ethics, a pedagogical oath and the affirmation that teaching is a profession uniquely charged with the responsibility of helping every child do well by doing good.”

The Brittney Walsh Memorial Fund held its 3rd Annual Rock & Bowl event last week in an effort to provide three scholarshi ps for students looking to continue their education and promote aware ness among young people not to drink and drive. Over the past three years, the fund has offere d close to $10,000 in scholarships to graduating seniors at the Copia gue Memorial High School. This year, we hope to expand by offering the awards to other districts. Before Brittney was killed by a drunk driver only two days after high school graduation, she was always found helping some body, and even after she’s gone, she still is. The Fund and the scholarships are simple; being a 501c3 not-for-profit, all the money raised goes into a managed fund similar to your retirement 401k. This money earns interest and dividends. This earned money then goes to the awards, leaving the principal amou nt there for many years to come.

The Walsh’s lost a big piece of their family back in June three years ago, and feel it every day. Brittney’s mom, Cheryl said, “At times, it’s hard to smile and laugh, and the scholarship writing component helps us do it again.” What makes these three scholarships unique is they all require the scholar to write a 250-word essay detailing “The Funniest Thing You Ever Did” or “The Funniest Thing You Ever Saw.” Chery l continued to say, “You’d be surprised what these kids come up with.”

The Suffolk County Sheriff’s Office welcomed forty-six recruits from Class 15-155 to the rank of Correction Officer during a graduation ceremony held at Suffolk Community College in Brentwood on Friday, October 30th. As recent students of the Suffolk County Sheriff’s Office Academy Bureau, the new officers successfully navigated the Academy’s rigorous thirteen week training program. During their Academy instruction, all officer candidates are required to successfully complete a variety of classroom and field instruction including, but not limited to, firearm safety and handling, defensive tactics, emergency medical training and a rigorous program of physical fitness and testing. They are also required to complete a community service requirement.

Burr Intermediate School in Commack holds an annual Kick for a Cause fundraiser. This year, all monies raised were donated to the Madagascar Ankizy Fund (ankizy means children in the Malagasy language). Dr. David Krause, renowned paleontologist and a founder of the fund, visited Burr Intermediate School to tell the fascinating story of his worldwide expeditions and discoveries. Dr. Krause has led numerous paleontological expeditions. In 1993 he fulfilled a childhood dream and journeyed to the remote island of Madagasar to search for Cretaceous fossils. What Dave found there was a treasure-trove of nearly complete fossil dinosaurs, crocodiles, amphibians, and even
mammals. His early field crews spent time searching for these fossils and camping near the village of Berivotra in northwestern Madagascar. Dr. Krause and the members of his expedition found themselves surrounded by children who were observing their work. Along with the remarkable fossils that they were uncovering, they also found some of the most abandoned and destitute children in the world, children who couldn’t read and write, children who’d never been seen by a doctor or dentist, and who were dying of easily treatable ailments. Very quickly it became clear that the paleontologists were in a unique position to help these children. They were amazed to discover that
500 US dollars would pay the salary of a teacher for an entire year, and that $300 could buy school supplies for a year. With this knowledge in hand, members of the field crew came together with several relatively small donations, and the Madagascar Ankizy Fund was born. The goals of the Madagascar Ankizy Fund are to build schools and hold clinics in remote areas of Madagascar. They also support basic health and hygiene by providing training, digging clean water wells, distributing mosquito nets, and installing latrines. Through their efforts, Burr students donated $1,000, and are changing the world and improving the lives of so many who are so far away.
Mixing It Up
Hauppauge Middle School students joined with more than two million other students across the country to identify, question and cross social and racial boundaries as part of the 14th Annual Mix It Up at Lunch Day, an event designed to foster respect and understanding in schools. Mix It Up encourages students to sit with someone new in the cafeteria for just one day and to cross group lines and meet new people. “We
encourage everyone to participate and have fun!” stated Hauppauge Middle School Principal Maryann Fletcher. A project of the Southern Poverty Law Center, Mix It Up at Lunch Day was launched by Teaching Tolerance more than a decade ago. In the group’s surveys, students identified the school cafeteria as the place where divisions are most clearly drawn. So on the last Tuesday in October of each school year, they ask students to move out

of their comfort zones and connect with someone new over lunch. According to the Teaching Tolerance website: “It’s a simple act with profound implications. Studies have shown that interactions across group lines can help reduce prejudice. When students interact with those who are different from them, biases and misperceptions can fall away.”

NEWEST EAGLE In recognizing Kings Park Boy Scout Troop 75’s newest Eagle Scout, Suffolk County Legislator Robert Trotta remarked that he was Billy’s soccer coach and that he was always by his side and ready for anything. Legislator Trotta praised Billy Doyle for reaching Scouting’s highest level before he turns 18 and that this achievement will be noted throughout his life. Billy Doyle’s Eagle Scout Service Project was to plan and coordinate a front garden for the Lucien Memorial Church in Kings Park, where the troop meets. He raised $914.36 for supplies and plants for the garden.

Lending a Helping Hand There are few things more frightening for a family than discovering that a loved one with a cognitive disorder has wandered away from home. As the hours go by, the hopes of finding these individuals start to dwindle. And, even if they are found, there is an increased risk of them straying once again. Alzheimer’s Disease Resource Center, Inc. (ADRC) has been working with the Suffolk County Sheriff’s Office in dealing with wandering adults with dementia as part of the Project Lifesaver program. A non-profit organization, Project Lifesaver aims to increase the location and recovery rate for those who wander off due to Alzheimer’s, dementia, Down syndrome, autism and other related cognitive conditions. Accomplishing
this in a timely fashion not only reduces the possibility of injury, but has proven to be life-saving. To further the agency’s efforts, ADRC has provided informative palm cards to help officers on patrol determine whether a person they’ve located is showing signs of Alzheimer’s disease. The Suffolk Sheriff’s Office has since provided these cards to other law enforcement agencies on Long Island. “When we do these presentations with the Sheriff’s Office, they always request the palm card,” says Mary Ann Malack-Ragona, Executive Director/CEO, ADRC. “They use them extensively, and so do we.” This relationship began in March when ADRC invited representatives from the Suffolk County Sheriff’s Office to participate in ADRC’s
Annual Education Conference & Expo. Subsequent to the Conference, Joan Motley, Outreach Coordinator for ADRC, invited the Sheriff’s representatives to speak at ADRC’s Caregiver Support Groups. The Sheriff’s Office conducted six presentations at ADRC’s caregiver support groups, which resulted in many families enrolling their loved ones in the program. ADRC has offered a courtesy table to the Sheriff’s Office at the West End Walk, which was held in August, where attendees learned about the importance of the Project Lifesaver program. The Sheriff’s Office has also been invited to attend ADRC’s East End Walk in October and will collaborate with ADRC in several speaking engagements that are on ADRC’s calendar for the
remainder of 2015. “ADRC is well-known as the regional leader of care, support services and education programs for families battling Alzheimer’s disease,” says Officer Bryan Stoothoff, Aide to Sheriff Vincent F. DeMarco. “Joan and Mary Ann are extremely receptive to our program, as they recognize the extreme need for incorporating Project Lifesaver throughout agencies in Suffolk County.” Using the ADRC informative palm card in conjunction with their training, law enforcement personnel can quickly retrieve a wandering individual — something that would otherwise take hours. The cards have also been distributed at senior health/information fairs. “A big misconception law enforcement often makes
in dealing with someone with Alzheimer’s disease is that the person is just intoxicated,” continues Officer Stoothoff. “These cards help change that mentality. All too often, we see tragic stories of those with cognitive disorders who wander and aren’t found in time. Our program brings tremendous peace of mind to these families. The Sheriff’s Office is just a phone call away, and we will bring them home.” Sheriff Vincent DeMarco was appointed by Project Lifesaver International as the Downstate New York State Coordinator. In this role, the Sheriff and his officers will be responsible for training law enforcement agencies south of Albany that wish to launch the Project Lifesaver program in their jurisdiction. The Nassau County Police Department
has since been trained on the program and will be launching their program in the near future. “We are proud to work with the Suffolk Sheriff’s Office in providing the palm cards as part of the Project Lifesaver program,” says Ms. Malack-Ragona. “The cards have proven to be very successful in helping to find those who suffer from Alzheimer’s and have wandered from their homes. Law enforcement can bring the person home sooner, ensuring the person’s safety and easing the family’s fears.
