D
uring the last weekend in October, Smithtown Central School District studentmusicians participated in two musical enrichment activities. Secondarylevel student musicians participated in the SCMEA Day of Tuba & Euphonium, hosted at Smithtown High School East. Approximately 150 tuba and euphonium students from across Suffolk County had the opportunity to learn more about their instruments and perform in a concert.

The Lost Holiday By: Jamie Lynn Ryan

November. No sooner has the last of the Halloween candy been given out to the neighborhood trick-ortreaters, than we are faced with the prospect of preparing for the next festive occasion on the calendar… Christmas, apparently. Year after year, the interval of time between the two seems to evaporate into a void of shopping, decorating, cooking and caroling, forgetting the small fact that there exists another holiday in between. I understand that, for some, Thanksgiving doesn’t have the same “fun” appeal to children and adults alike. There are no costumes, no Santa Claus, no presents to speak of… and yet, that is precisely what makes the day so uniquely special.
The entire point, in fact, is to be grateful for that which we have – family, friends, health, happiness – and not be caught up in the materialism that tends to overtake every other occasion. It’s not about the meal, or the football, or the Black Friday shopping deals that continue to creep into Thursday; it’s about the company you spend the day celebrating with. This is the case no matter the holiday, of course; but on Thanksgiving, we tend to step back and appreciate it just a bit more. Or we should. So to all those who enjoy shopping at the mall while being serenaded by Christmas carols over the stores’ PA systems… there will be plenty of time for that beginning on November 25th. Until
then, let’s try to enjoy the remainder of Autumn, the harvest season. Let’s work on planning our Thanksgiving menus and football-watching marathons if we must; but mostly, let us all work on finding things to be thankful for in our lives. Trust me, the Christmas sales and songs will still be there at the end of the month. The spirit of giving doesn’t need to coincide with actual, tangible gifts, nor does it need to wait for any particular occasion. It’s a feeling, an attitude, a sense of appreciation which should be embraced no matter the time. Sure, things can always be better; but they can also always be worse. Thanksgiving is as good a time as any to remember this.

Embracing Differences represented Smithtown Central School District at the annual Parents, Educators and Kids Festival at Northport High School. During the PEAK Festival, students and their parents participated together in elementary general music activities and an afternoon performance.
Six student-artists from Smithtown High School East in the Smithtown Central School District had their artwork selected for inclusion in the Suffolk Center on the Holocaust, Diversity and Human Understanding’s 2016 Embracing Our Differences Long Island art exhibit.
Smithtown High School East students Faith Leonard, Brooke Berroyer, Stephanie Berdon, Alexandra Thode, Allison Cleary and Alexandra Granelle submitted work from teacher Dianne Shanian’s photography class in the spring semester. The student
artwork was enlarged and displayed in mural format at the Patchogue Middle School. These 12 by 8 foot murals were unveiled at an opening reception on October 27th and will remain on display through November 11th.

Students, coaches, staff, and administrators in the Commack School District showed their support of our veterans by participating in the 22 Pushup Challenge. A group of over 500 athletes outlined the entire football field and counted out their simultaneous pushups in unison. An American Flag covered 30 yards of the infield as the Commack community joined the efforts of Legislator Steve Stern and Signature Premiere Properties to raise awareness for veteran mental health issues.
Twenty-two is the number of veterans that take their own lives each day, hence the name “22 Pushup Challenge.” The challenge is to complete 22 pushups each day for 22 days, and to challenge others to do so as well. After hearing of Leg. Stern’s challenge, Commack Board of Education Vice President, Janine DiGirolamo, along with Superintendent of Schools, Dr. Donald James, organized the overwhelming stadium of support in two days with
the help of enthusiastic teachers, coaches, and administrators. “This is an awesome sea of support for our veterans,” stated Dr. James. “Our students and the entire Commack family always unite to support those in need.” “The more pushups completed, the more Signature will donate to the veterans, up to $100,000,” Steve Stern’s press release stated. Hopefully, the turnout in Commack will push that closer to the goal.
Holiday Food Drive Suffolk County Legislator Rob Trotta is collaborating with the Smithtown Emergency Food Pantry to collect food for holiday meals for families served by the food pantry, which is located at St. Thomas of Canterbury Church in Smithtown. In existence for more than 30 years, the pantry is supported by contributions from the community, as well as the parishioners of seven Smithtown Churches who volunteer to staff the pantry and organize the supplies. Non-perishable food including canned vegetables, soups, yams, beans, cranberry sauce,
tuna, chicken, salmon, stews and meats, fruit and fruit cups, as well as Stove Top Stuffing mix, gravy packets/bottles and spices, macaroni and cheese, rice, pasta, sauce, nuts, granola bars, brownie mixes, apple and cranberry juice, peanut butter and jelly, shelf-stable milk, water and other food for a Thanksgiving or holiday meal are being collected. In addition, paper goods such as plates, napkins, paper towels, and toilet paper are also needed. Donations may be dropped off at Legislator Trotta’s district office at 59 Landing Avenue, Smithtown, Monday
through Friday, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. until December 16th. The Food Pantry will also accept gift cards to purchase turkeys and other fresh items. Legislator Trotta said, “The Smithtown Emergency Food Pantry does a wonderful job throughout the year of assisting area residents who need a helping hand. Holidays are a time for family, friends and giving and every family should be able to share a holiday meal together,” said Suffolk County Legislator Rob Trotta. Scholarships Available Each year, the Long Island Horticultural Society (LIHS) offers scholarships to Long Island college students enrolled full-time or part-time in a horticulture program. In

On Target Tackan Elementary School in the Smithtown Central School District recognized the outstanding leadership qualities of its students with its quarterly On Target ceremony on October 28th. Three or four students from each grade are selected by teachers, teacher aides, monitors
and other staff members for their good deeds. Parents and family members gathered in the cafeteria as each student was called up to receive a pencil and certificate from Tackan Elementary School Principal Dr. Allyn Leeds. “This is our opportunity to recognize your children for
being wonderful human beings,” Dr. Leeds said. “In some way, they have contributed to our school in a positive way.” Students were treated to ice cream thanks to the Parent Teacher Association and will have their photo displayed in the hallway.

This past weekend the Nesconset Chamber of Commerce put on a Halloween display for the community known as Project Haunt Live. At the Nesconset Gazebo Park, the Chamber of Commerce assembled a pumpkin patch for the younger children and then later in the day they had a live haunted display.
In order to put on such a display the Nesconset Chamber of Commerce relied upon the work of local students and donations from local businesses who wished to sponsor the event. The Child Friendly Pumpkin patch took place during the daylight hours. Then after sundown, the haunted activities began.

Thanks to the work of student actors, makeup artists, and prop / set designers the Chamber of Commerce put on a live display of a Zombie Graveyard, Witches, Halloween “Creepypasta” Characters and a Haunted Gazebo complete with a Mad Scientist.
