Build Your Own Chair “Either I will ﬁnd a way, or I will make one.” - Philip Sidney When people ask me how I landed my first job in journalism, I often have to laugh and say, “I didn’t. I made my own job.” Or as I like to put it, “No one offered me a seat at the table. I had to get out some wood, a hammer and nails, and build my own chair.” It was the winter of 2005 and I happened to have a friend who was getting into the arena of online press release distribution. I inquired if he was planning to add any articles to the mix, and offered up my writing services free of charge. I hadn’t yet written professionally, but I knew a bit about writing and a bit about the entertainment industry. When I was asked to pitch the creative direction for an editorial (articles) portion of his newswire, I suggested interviewing celebrities and newsmakers. Since I wasn’t yet asking for any money, I got a half-hearted greenlight. “If you can make it happen, then you can run it,” I was told. The very first interview I

landed is still burned on my brain. It was one of the cast members from the very first season of The Apprentice. At the time, thirteen years ago, it felt like quite a feat to get anyone notable to speak with me for an interview. My first handful of interviews left me giddy with excitement in a rather childish way, mostly because I couldn’t believe that by simply declaring that I was going to become something, it actually began to happen. Before I knew it, I was interviewing talk show hosts, media personalities; a musician here, an actor there. The ball was starting to roll. After eight years and more than one hundred interviews that eventually rose to the level of Oscar winners, Emmy winners, Grammy winners and U.S. presidential candidates, I parted ways from this original position. For quite a while I felt certain that an opportunity like that would never come my way again. Time went by (ﬁve years to be exact), when I had an epiphany. Nobody had given me that initial opportunity. I created it, myself.

And if I created it once, I could create it again. Once again, I dipped into my bucket of fairy dust and declared that I was going to build a syndicated interview column from scratch. In fact, it was my New Year’s resolution nearly one year ago. I didn’t know exactly how I would re-build these important relationships, get media outlets to come on board or get anyone to say yes to an interview, but I knew I was going to do it. Well, here we are, ten months later, and my portfolio of published and syndicated interviews is more substantial now than it was eight years ago before I ventured out on my own. My question for you to contemplate this week is this: Are you currently waiting for permission to do something you’ve always wanted to do? Is there something creative inside of you that wants to come out, but, “no one will give you the chance”? If a seat at the table is alluding you, it may be time to roll up your sleaves and build your own chair.

Marlene Yolango, a special education teacher at Northport High School, was recently selected as a New York State Master Teacher in K-12 STEM education. The Master Teacher Program is composed of the highest performing teachers and educators in the subjects of science, technology, engineering and math. Once accepted into the program, through letters of recommendation and a rigorous interview process, teachers enter a four-year commitment.

This commitment includes peer mentoring and professional development opportunities, as well as monthly regional meetings with other Master Teachers. “Marlene is a Master Teacher in every sense of the term,” said Mrs. Ally Giaimo, district chairperson for special education, “and her dynamic, inquiry-based style of teaching keeps students highly engaged and always seeking to learn more. She’s an inspiration to future STEM leaders in education.”

Yolango started her teaching career in 1997 and has been a teacher at Northport since 1999. The Book Fairies is an organization located in Freeport, NY. Six years ago, founder Amy Zaslansky heard about a classroom that had no books to offer to its students. Amy decided to start a book drive for used children’s books so she could hopefully be able to donate books to this classroom. By word of mouth and hard work, this drive took off and resulted in a final donation of about 3,500 books! Driven by her desire to make a difference in her community, Amy later created The Book Fairies, a 501C3 non-profit. The Book Fairies accepts donations of new and gently used books, and connects them with libraries, schools, veteran organizations, soup kitchens and more organizations throughout all five boroughs and on Long Island that do not have the funds to foster the love of reading.

They function out of their main office in Freeport, but they also work with 40 different special needs sites that pickup book donations and bring them to their office. Every book that they collect goes through sorting, their process of thoroughly examining the type of book and condition it’s in. With only 2 staff members, The Book Fairies heavily relies on the work of selfless volunteers, who generously give of their time to help this charity! The Book Fairies receive help from about 1,500 volunteers each year!

If you would like to get involved with The Book Fairies, you can! They are in need of sorting volunteers to come to their Freeport location on one of their sorting days (Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday) and help sort through all their current book donations. First time volunteers will go through a brief training for about 10-15 minutes and then they can continue to volunteer without addtional training as much as they would like. If you are 13 or older you can come alone and if you are younger than 13 you will need a guardian to accompany you. If you’re interested in volunteering as a sorter, there is no need to reserve your space. Simply show up at their Freeport location (70 North Main St. Back Entrance) on one of their sorting days between 10AM and 3PM! Additionally, book donations are always welcome! If you would like to donate books, you can do so at their Freeport location during those same sorting hours or you can drop off books at any time behind their office at their book-drop location. You can also visit one of their local book donation sites or arrange for your books to be picked up if you have five or more boxes of donations! Reading materials can not only foster literacy and academic success, but they can also provide a respite from personal struggles and nature a love of reading across age groups. 50% of schools that this organization works with does not have libraries. 64% of fourth graders in New York State read below their grade level. Books can be expensive and many people do not have the funds to afford reading material. Thankfully, Book Fairies are there to help! Their first year as a non-profit, The Book Fairies collected 35,000 books. As of today, they have surpassed 1.4 million books collected!

Because of their book donations, many people have been able to experience the joy of reading. One local school that received many book donations through this organization in turn saw their school wide reading level increase 400%!

Bat Boy: A Yankee Miracle Rock-n-Roll U (RNRU), a music school that teaches children and adults of all ages, all skill levels, and all abilities, is proud to announce that a number of their students were chosen to perform in the musical “Bat Boy: A Yankee Miracle” at The Argyle Theatre at Babylon Village on October 17th and at the Tilles Center for the Performing Arts at LIU Post in Brookville on October 23rd. “Bat Boy: A Yankee Miracle” is the story of Ray Negron, told by Ray himself, who became a batboy for the NY Yankees after he, and his friends, were caught spraypainting the walls of Yankee Stadium by none other than George Steinbrenner. “I’d like to thank Ray, and everyone involved with ‘Bat Boy: A Yankee Miracle,’ for casting our performers in this wonderful production,” said Jessica Gallone, Owner, RNRU. “We are so proud of them all, we loved sharing the stage with rising artist DivasNation, and the rest of the Batboy Cast,” she continued. After being interviewed several times on Steve Vaccaro and Ray Negron’s radio and podcast show on the Village Connection Network, Ray was very impressed by the talent that was produced by RNRU. Ray requested that the RNRU Choir perform the song “You’ll be in My Heart” in “Bat Boy: A Yankee Miracle.” In addition, 3 RNRU students, Cassidy Gill, Commack, 9; Conner Gill, Commack, 7; and Juiliana Aspromonti, Dix Hills, 9, were cast in the production as the children of NY Yankee legend Thurman Munson. A crisp fall breeze and sunny skies were the perfect backdrop for Northport High School’s annual homecoming celebration held on Oct. 20. Students, faculty and members of the community donned blue and gold as they packed Tiger Stadium to demonstrate their pride and support of the district’s football team, who played an aggressive matchup against Centereach High School, taking the lead in the first few minutes of the game. The day’s celebration commenced earlier in the day with a Hall of Fame induction in the

auditorium. Introduced to the community were Max Bartig (Class of 2006), Andrew D’Eloia (Class of 1991), Corinne Gandolfi (Class of 2006), Bryan Quinn (Class of 2003), Jaenine Michealsen (Class of 1986), the 2002 State Championship Girls’ Varsity Volleyball Team and the Northport Tiger Marching Band, Flagline and Tigerettes. Pre-game festivities included recognition of the football team’s and cheerleaders’ senior members, who presented flowers to a significant other. The halftime show featured the marching

band, Tigerettes and Flagline who performed a variety of popular songs for the crowd. In addition, the Hall of Fame inductees were introduced, as well as senior members of the marching band, Tigerettes and Flagline. Later in the evening, seniors Trevor Koulemos and Pegeen Friese were crowned homecoming king and queen at the dance. Tenacity and skill reigned on the stadium field as the tigers dominated the Centereach High School team with a final score of 35-6.

Student Named Rising Scientist Smithtown High School West senior James Rogers has been recognized as a Rising Scientist by the Child Mind Institute. He was also awarded a $2,000 scholarship. The award recognizes his research in the fields of neuroscience and adolescent and child mental health. This recognition was based on Rogers’ work during the past three years

in science research at Smithtown High School West. His studies focus on understanding the role of the neurotransmitter, glutamate, in excitotoxicity. Excitotoxicity is believed to be involved in the pathologies of a number of neurodegenerative diseases including multiple sclerosis, Alzheimer’s disease and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis.

Rogers is using biochemical, behavioral and genomic methods to uncover the role that glutamate plays in both normal and abnormal neuronal functioning and learning how the glutamatergic neurotransmitter system evolved.

DRAMA CLUB - The Smithtown High School East Drama Club will present “The Dining Room” from Nov. 8-10 at 7 p.m. in the auditorium of Smithtown High School East. The play is set in a titular dining room, where families have assembled for generations to celebrate special occasions and mark the rituals of everyday life. Twentyseven actors play more than 55 characters, embodying grandfathers, children and teenagers, wealthy women and housemaids. The stories build a portrait of a particular class of people in America in the last century. The play is directed by Kim Sundberg and co-produced by Sundberg and Matthew Hennings. Legislatures for a Day Legislators Tom Cilmi and Leslie Kennedy welcomed Pack 3333 of Hauppauge to the Suffolk County Legislature Building in Hauppauge. The pack was there to learn about what a Legislator does and how a law is made. Each of the

eleven Scouts assumed the role of Legislator. They listened to public speakers, then debated and voted on two proposed laws, one conceived by one of the Scouts to ban motorcycles from highways, and another which would have outlawed the distribution

of candy on Halloween. Proclaimed one of the Scouts, “Don’t take away my Milky Way!” Neither bill passed, much to the delight of motorcycle riders and trick or treaters throughout Suffolk County.

FIGHT AGAINST HUNGER - On October 27th, students from Great Hollow Middle School and Dogwood Elementary School in the Smithtown Central School District joined forces to help fight hunger. Members of the schools’ Peanut Butter Gang community service clubs visited Hospitality, Too soup kitchen in Brentwood. They made peanut butter sandwiches for distribution at various locations on Long Island and in New York City, and also helped serve a hot lunch to soup kitchen guests.
