Veterans Day in October? For a short time, according to Military.com, thanks to the Uniform Holiday Bill, which in 1968 established three-day weekends for federal employees by celebrating national holidays on Mondays, Veterans Day was moved to the fourth Monday of October — the first being October 25, 1971. However, many people did not agree with this
Veterans around the world Many countries, including the United States, celebrate veterans on or near November 11. America’s closest neighbor to the north, Canada, commemorates veterans on Remembrance Day (also November 11), as does the United Kingdom. Britain also has Remembrance Sunday, which is the second Sunday of November. Remembrance Day is also called Poppy Day, when people of the Commonwealth member states wear a red poppy flower in honor of military members who have died in the line of duty. Paying tribute There are various ways to honor veterans on Veterans Day and Remembrance Day. Federal government closings, educational efforts in schools, parades and visits to military hospitals or cemeteries may take place. In Europe, it is common to observe two minutes of silence at 11 a.m. every November 11. Veterans Day and its sister holidays mark the honoring of veterans of all wars, with a particular focus on living veterans. It is a day to celebrate the dedication and selflessness of hardworking military men and women.

Veterans Day begins with Armistice Day Veterans Day is a byproduct of the end of World War I, when Germany and the Allied Nations signed the Treaty of Versailles, formally ceasing fighting and establishing terms of peace. On November 11, 1919, the first anniversary of the signing of the treaty, the first Armistice Day events were held. Armistice Day was initially a legal holiday to honor the end of World War I only, states History.com. The United States Congress passed a resolution in 1926 for an annual observance and November 11 became a national holiday starting in 1938. However, in 1954, after the country had been embroiled in both World War II and the Korean War, Congress amended the Act of 1938 by renaming the commemoration “Veterans Day” to honor veterans of all wars.

There has been a significant decline in regular blood donors, and the region’s supply has reached critically low levels. In order to maintain a safe blood supply, a seven-day inventory of all blood types must be continually replenished. Right now, reserves are below that minimum. Our region’s blood supply has never been lower. This critical blood shortage stems from decline in donor base and increased demand for blood. In commemoration of Veterans Day 2019, American Legion Greenlawn Post 1244 will conduct its annual Veterans Day Observance at 11:00 am on Monday, November 11th, at Greenlawn Memorial Park, at the corner of Pulaski Rd. and Broadway in Greenlawn. The ceremony, which has been conducted annually for many years by the Greenlawn Post, will be attended by many veterans, government officials and members of the public. This is the only Veterans Day ceremony in the Town of Huntington to take place on the actual date of Veterans Day.
Veterans Day is intended to honor all our military veterans, including the over 18 million living men and women veterans that are still among us. “Historians have said that Dwight Eisenhower was prouder of being a soldier than he was of being the president. And while relatively few veterans ever reach the rank of general, pride in ones’ military service is a bond shared by nearly all who have served,” said Post Commander Donna Boyle. “Fewer than 10 percent of Americans can claim the title “veteran.” Far less than 1 percent of our population is currently defending us in the Global
War on Terrorism. Veterans have given us freedom, security and the greatest nation on earth. We must remember and appreciate them,” Boyle said. The American Legion is the nation’s largest wartime veteran’s organization. Biggest Hazardous Waste Disposal Event The Town of Smithtown Department of Environment and Waterways held its biggest bi-annual hazardous household waste event on October 19. Approximately 660 Smithtown households participated in the event, safely disposing toxic items not permitted in regular curbside waste pickups. This large turnout (the biggest one yet) resulted in over 25 tons of hazardous materials collected. This event saw a 9% increase in participants from the last hazardous materials collection event held in April of this year. The April event had 606 households participating, while the October 2018 event had 565. Hazardous materials were collected and manifested for disposal by Care Environmental Corp. The New York State DEC is expected to reimburse the Town for 50% of the contractor expense for this event. The most common hazardous materials collected at the event for

The Custom-made wall and Smithtown Sign was made using Travertine stone, used by StoneMasons dating back to Ancient Egypt. The

And not only are we here today embracing our heritage… but we’re embracing our future.” - Mayor Richard Smith In addition to the bull renovations, the Town also unveiled two historic roadside markers that map out Richard Smith’s bull ride to set the town’s limits.
