n Friday, October 10th, a Garden Dedication Ceremony was held to commemorate Suffolk County Girl Scout Troop 483 from Nesconset creating a garden at one of Family Residences and Essential Enterprises, Inc. (FREE) residential programs in Hauppauge in memory of Nancy, one of the residents, who lived there and passed away last year. The bench in the garden was donated by Nancy’s father and sister. Thanks to the Scouts for their hard work.

To help whet the appetites of the Webelos Scouts as they learn about what to expect when entering their local Boy Scout Troop next year, the Matinecock District (Boy Scouts of America), held its 15th annual Webelos Woods event, as 22 Cub Scout Packs and 22 Boy Scout Troops from the Commack, Kings Park, and Hauppauge areas of Smithtown Township and from the entire Town of Huntington attended the weekend (October 24th– 26th) at Cathedral Pines County Park in Middle Island for an overnight camping trip. Saturday’s events had the 4th and 5th grade Webelos Scouts participating in instructions at various skill events and competitions. Scoutcraft knowledge and how-to’s were explained and demonstrated by Boy Scouts Troops in
the Matinecock District; thirteen Scouting skills stations were held (i.e. First Aid, Cooking, Knots & Lashings, Engineering, Fire Building, Map & Compass, Archery, Camp Gadgets). The winner of the “made at the campsite” dessert contest went to Cub Scout Pack 406 (Melville) for their baked apple pie, made in a cardboard box oven. The Cub Scout Packs that participated in this event were: Smithtown/ Hauppauge’s Pack 328 and Pack 589; East Northport’s Pack 5, Pack 238, and Pack 52; Huntington’s Pack 66, and Pack 181; Greenlawn’s Pack 225 and Pack 877; Elwood’s Pack 471; Centerport’s Pack 312; Commack’s Pack 322, Pack 329, and Pack 403; Melville’s Pack 406 and Pack 22; Northport’s Pack 42, Pack 232, and Pack 400; Kings Park’s Pack 75, Pack
379 and Pack 539; and Dix Hills’ Pack 457. By: Jamie Lynn Ryan The perfect dress. Is there even such a thing? Perhaps. It’s just that, when pressed for time, the search becomes seemingly more futile by the day. Store after store, scanning the racks for something – anything – that stands out and screams you... I suppose I’m atypical in the sense that I’m part of a rare breed of girl that doesn’t enjoy shopping; that is, not when I need something specific, anyway. Send me on a random shopping spree with all the time in the world, and I have no problem dropping several hundred dollars in a matter of hours. But give me an occasion, a short window of time to find something appropriate and,
well, let’s just say that window closes most of the way before I can motivate myself to venture out. Couple that with my deep aversion to being forced to navigate an entire mall, that endless, sprawling layout of department stores and dress shops, and my options become increasingly limited. More often than not, I find myself on the complete opposite side from where I need to be, standing in front of one of the gigantic maps, vainly trying to ascertain the quickest route to my destination. Once in the store, there’s the matter of locating which floor the department you’re seeking is on, which, oddly enough, some employees don’t even seem to have a handle on. So
after riding the escalator up and down and making the rounds of each level, I can then get down to the purpose of my mission – actually pinpointing something I like, finding it in my size and then, assuming steps 1 & 2 go as planned, crossing my fingers that said “perfect” dress is somewhat affordable. Sound simple? Let’s just say my last dress shopping mission, which I began precisely two weeks before the date I needed it, has so far encompassed two different malls, several department stores and random dress shops and resulted in my purchasing two different selections, neither of which I am completely sold on. Homecoming was picture perfect in every way this year. The festivities began with a spirited parade and ended with a shutout victory 20-0 for the Cougars. Led by Master of Ceremonies Jim DelGiudice’s warm and funny persona, along with the fabulous Cougarette kickline and cheerleaders, the very entertaining “happy” performance by the Marching Band, and the touching presentation of flowers by the senior athletes to their moms, it was a fabulous day. The high school’s Student Council and class advisors did an exceptional job of organizing the event. “A day like this is a collaborative effort,” said Student Council advisor, Eric Biagi. “Thanks to all who helped make homecoming such a successful and impressive event.”
This year’s Commack High School Alumnus of Distinction is Christopher Petersen, Class of 2003. A graduate of Notre Dame, he worked in finance until 2008. Christopher always aspired to serve our country in the military, so he followed his heart and went through an arduous two-year pararescue military training courses: Pararescue Indoctrination Course, Air Force Combat Dive Course, Army Airborne School, Navy Military Freefall School, Survival School, EMTBasic and Paramedic and the PJ Apprentice Course. He was one of 10 of the original 90 soldiers who graduated. As part of the 103rd Rescue Wing of the United States Air Force, Christopher has deployed three times to Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom: in 2011, 2012 and 2014.
Over this time period, he participated in numerous combat personnel recovery missions, resulting in American, coalition, and Afghan lives saved. He was twice selected as Airman of the Quarter in 2012, as well as the New York Air National Guard’s Airman of the Year in the same year. His military decorations include the Bronze Star with Valor, several Air Medals, an Aerial Achievement Medal, and the Air Force Combat Action Medal. In 2013 he was selected as the USO National Guardsmen of the Year representing the entire United States National Guard, and also the recipient of the Special Operations Medical Association Pararescue Medic of the Year in 2013. Fund Secured Senator John Flanagan recently announced that his office has secured funding for the Kings Park Central School District. The funding, which is the result of Senator Flanagan’s ongoing efforts to provide additional opportunities to Kings Park students, will help enhance the overall educational experience at all of the schools in the district. Over the past four years, Senator Flanagan has secured close to $300,000 in state funding, beyond traditional school aid, that the district has used to offset the cost of a number of projects. This year, the school will be using the funding secured by Senator Flanagan to help launch a robotics program that would place a programmable robot called a Nao Robot at both RJO Intermediate School and William T. Rogers Middle School. According to the district, this will help generate interest in robotics and programming at a young age, while also potentially enabling the use of the robot in after school or summer programs. Additionally, the school is looking to use a portion of the funding to offset the cost of a state-of-the-art mobile device cart which would be equipped with Windows 8 devices, a printer, and a wireless access point. This cart, to which the school is hoping to add a 3D printer, would be dedicated to the high school robotics
program, while also having the ability to be wheeled into other classrooms when needed. To put that program into action, the school is very pleased that the money Senator Flanagan secured through this year’s State budget will also offset the startup cost of their Robotics Club to allow it to get up and running this year.
In order to help feed needy Long Islanders, Boy Scout Troop 125 collected donations of peanut butter and jelly at the Commack ShopRite and King Kullen supermarkets on Saturday, October 11th. All cash donations collected that day were used to purchase

The app would allow parents to access their

In recent years, funding secured by Senator Flanagan has enabled the school to purchase a new press box for the Kings Park High School, install computer labs at the elementary schools and replace electronic signs at both the high school and at William T. Rogers Middle School that were destroyed by Hurricane Sandy. Superintendent Timothy Eagen said, “The Kings Park Central School District is ecstatic to receive this funding from Senator Flanagan. Thanks to Senator Flanagan’s generosity, our district will be able to jump start a STEM initiative and better meet the needs of students. We are very appreciative of Senator Flanagan’s support.” “Throughout the years, my office has worked closely with Kings Park school administration to support their efforts in providing the students with the best education possible. The grants I have been able to secure have been used by former Superintendent Susan Agruso and current Superintendent Eagen to enhance the educational experience for all Kings Park children and it is something I look forward to continuing in the future,” stated Senator Flanagan.

Taking A Bite On Friday, October 24th, Smithtown Elementary School students took a pledge and some big bites in favor of healthy eating habits as they participated in the Big Apple Crunch in conjunction with National Food Day. The students were given apples, provided by the school PTA, to enjoy during their lunch periods. Big Apple Crunch is a fun, participatory celebration and demonstration of healthy eating whereby businesses, schools, organizations and individuals come together to take part in a “crunch

“Each month during Tasting Tuesday, we offer students the opportunity to see what a certain fruit or vegetable would look like after it is harvested, and we talk to them about where it comes from,” said PTA President Jen Camilleri. “Often we ask them to take a guess too! Then they can try a sample. We send home nutrient information, health benefits and recipe options too. The students look forward to Tasting Tuesday each month.
