Calming the Chaos By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Take a deep breath. It calms the mind. So they say, anyway. Me, I tend to bottle all the day’s anxiety and frustration inside, carry it over into the next day (or week) and wait for it to eventually, inevitably, explode – usually at someone who has the misfortune to be in the wrong place at the wrong time. Seems healthy and productive, no? Enter: Yoga, that deep breathing, spirit cleansing, relaxation technique that so many swear by. Unfortunately, once a week doesn’t quite cut it when the madness engulfs all aspects of life. Best to take

that meditation practice back home with you, to work, sitting in traffic each morning and evening… everywhere. It’s guaranteed to come in handy. It’s amazing how an act so simple that we take for granted can, when given the chance, alleviate much of what ails us during the daily grind. Breathe in… 1-2-3-4-5-6…Breathe out...and repeat as needed. To infinity (and beyond). I would imagine everyone has stress in his/ her life. The difference lies in how each person handles it, or doesn’t, as the case may be. While some thrive on chaos, others shut down at even the slightest roadblock. Any deviation from the agreed-upon plan

is met with panic. There is no going with the flow, only uncertainty, anxiety and, ultimately, aggravation. The best we can all do is focus on the big picture, on those things that are truly important. As another of my favorite quotations states, Frame every socalled disaster with these words: In ﬁve years, will this matter? If the answer is no, move on. Treat those obstacles with the level of importance they deserve – minimal. Few things are worth the time and effort we spend stressing over them. Fine advice if you can follow it. I’m still trying. ‘Til then, breath in… 1-2-3-4-5-6…

The Town of Smithtown has been awarded a New York State Department of Transportation Safe Routes to School Grant and will be collaborating with the Commack School District on this program. The targeted schools for this program are Indian Hollow, North Ridge, Sawmill and Wood Park (as they are located in the Town of Smithtown). A Safe Routes to School Task Force that includes members from each school community will spend time this year working with students, teachers, PTAs, administrators, law enforcement, and many other interested community members to begin to implement this program. This program will afford our children the opportunity to embrace an active lifestyle through walking, bicycling and other fitness programs. The timing could not

The Hauppauge School District community recently rallied to support the 8th Annual Kicks for Cancer fundraiser. The event raised more than $32,000 through community donations; raffles; and sales of T-shirts, hoodies, bracelets, sunglasses, lanyards, bracelets, blankets and hats. Kicks for Cancer is named in memory of Courtney Tomkin – a former Hauppauge High School student and soccer player who lost her valiant battle against brain cancer in 2008. Kicks for Cancer has donated more than $200,000 over the past seven years to various charities, including: the Making Headway Foundation, the American Cancer Society – Making Strides Against Breast Cancer, the American Lung Association, the Make-A-Wish Foundation and the Courtney Tomkin Scholarship Fund. Launched at Hauppauge School District in 2008, today more than 40 schools in Suffolk County run their own Kicks for Cancer game through the Suffolk County Girls Soccer Coaches Association

Hauppauge High School seniors - along with Social Studies Teacher Harry Shehigian - recently participated in the Inaugural Student Day at the Suffolk County Legislature, which was sponsored by the League of Women Voters of Suffolk County. The students were warmly welcomed by Lora Gellerstein, Chief of Staff for Presiding Officer DuWayne Gregory, and Lisa Scott, President of the League of Women Voters of Suffolk County, to kick off the first ever Student Day. “Participating at the Suffolk County Legislature was a very unique experience. I had the pleasure of being able to interact with several officials, legislators and

students from other schools as well as to participate in a mock legislative session,” described Alyssa Bernardo. “Overall, I learned that it is essential to be involved and aware with what is occurring in our community.” The students were given an overview of how the Suffolk County Legislature works and also had an opportunity to meet with Presiding Officer Gregory, Amityville; Legislator Leslie Kennedy, Hauppauge; and Legislator Robert Trotta, Smithtown. They also viewed a series of presentations about various careers in county government. Student Day culminated in a mock legislative session on whether to ban drones within a certain distance

from schools. Some students were tasked with defending the bill, while others tried to defeat the bill. Students were assigned roles as legislators, concerned community members, parents, etc., and participated in a mock public hearing. A representative from Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone’s office assisted the students who presented at the public hearing, while Gellerstein assisted the legislature. “This experience was very eye opening,” said Versara Goberdhan. “I feel enlightened having been given the opportunity to see how politics and the government work up close.”

Branch Brook Elementary School students in the Smithtown Central School District participated in a fire safety lesson on October 21st. Members of the Smithtown Fire Department visited the school and spoke to

in the Bill of Rights: Mary Beth Tinker – one of the plaintiffs in the landmark Tinker vs. Des Moines Supreme Court case – and Karen Korematsu, the daughter of Fred Korematsu, plaintiff in the Korematsu vs. The United States case. In 1965, 13 year-old Tinker was one of a group of students suspended from school for wearing an armband to protest the Vietnam War. Her family contested the suspension, contending that students have free speech rights. In 1942, 23-year-old Korematsu refused to follow government orders to give up his belongings and report to a government incarceration camp for Japanese Americans during World War II. After being arrested, he sued the government for violating

his Constitutionally protected rights to due process and equal treatment under the law. Tinker’s and Korematsu’s dramatic presentations drew students and teachers into the incredible stories behind their landmark Supreme Court cases. “Understanding civil disobedience is a key concept taught in Hauppauge School District’s Social Studies classes. Students learn that, throughout history, brave men and women have stood for their beliefs and against injustice that they have seen in the world,” teacher Anne Stebbins. This unique event provided students with the opportunity to experience living history and to explore First Amendment freedom at a young age.

Students at Mills Pond Elementary School in the Smithtown Central School District were treated to a visit from the $1 million robot. The program was held as part of Red Ribbon Week, reinforcing the district’s wellness initiatives.

The robot shared with students that their bodies were more valuable than $1 million and they need to treat their bodies with love, kindness and respect. He encouraged the students to make good choices about the things they put into their bodies as well.

Smithtown Central School District’s middle schools – Accompsett, Nesaquake and Great Hollow – all showed their support to make their schools a bully-free zone. Accompsett Middle School, in conjunction with the National Family Partnership’s Red Ribbon Campaign, hosted an assembly featuring a performance by All Access Productions on October 20th. “No More Victims” featured Karissa Setran, former AMS student and current Smithtown High

School West sophomore, as a dancer. The performers delivered a moving bullying prevention message and stressed the importance of demonstrating empathy for others. At the end of the show, the students were given an opportunity to listen to an insightful motivational speaker and ask follow-up questions. Throughout the week, students in all three schools participated in different theme days. Great Hollow and Nesaquake middle schools held theme days, such as “Crazy Hat/

Hair/Wig Day,” “Superhero Day” and “Halloween Costume Day.” Members of the sixth, seventh, and eighth grade activities club at Nesaquake created posters to advertise Red Ribbon Week, and decorated the school. Faculty volunteers read character education announcements that discussed the importance of staying drug free over the public announcement system at the beginning of each school day.

Lesson in History As an introduction to their study of Native Americans, fourth-grade students at St. James Elementary School in the Smithtown Central School District learned about different tribes and participated in hands-on activities during a visit with Native Americans

from the Journeys Into American Indian Territory program on October 14th. With their studies focusing on tribes native to New York, the students began the day with a brief video presentation. The classes gathered to listen to presenters tell Native American stories, examine

day to inspire healthier eating and change food perceptions for the better. During the event, district participants took a bite out of apples they brought in from home and signed in with their classroom and

homeroom teachers to be registered and counted as a cruncher. The school’s project was part of the statewide Big Apple Crunch celebration held in New York City in honor of Food Day.

Superhero Visit Dogwood Elementary School students in the Smithtown Central School District has a special visit from anti-bullying superhero OmegaMan on October 21st. Dressed in orange and wearing their orange bracelets, students throughout the school showed their support during National Unity Day. OmegaMan, who conducts

anti-bullying and character development presentations throughout the U.S., spoke to the students how they can be heroes by helping everyone respect others and making good choices. “Bully Free Starts with You and Me” is the message he conveyed to the students while showing off his superhero strength as he reminded them to become dream-makers and not

dream-breakers. Dogwood teachers, along with Principal Renee Carpenter, spoke with students throughout the day about what bullying means and how to be upstanders verses bystanders. The students recited the Dogwood AntiBullying Pledge and each class signed a pledge about what it means for them to be bully-free.

SPECIAL FIELD TRIP - As part of October’s Fire Prevention Month, kindergartners at Accompsett Elementary School in the Smithtown Central School District had a special visit from members of the Smithtown Fire Department on October 19th.
