Halloween Celebration

s part of Red Ribbon Week and its Halloween celebrations, each class at St. James Elementary School in the Smithtown Central School District designed its own scarecrows. Each class stuffed and decorated their scarecrows, which all tied into different grade-level themes. Students and staff each completed a pledge to make healthy choices and scare away drugs. Thanks to all those who participated in this festive Halloween event.

This presidential campaign is like no other. One candidate is a successful businessman who beat all the odds, plus 16 other Republicans, and became the Republican nominee for President. Make the Most of Gameday Entertaining Few things are more exciting and festive for sports fans than gathering with close friends to cheer on a favorite team. Although a large part of the fun involves watching the game, food and other festivities often round out the day especially when fans gather in the comforts of private homes rather than big stadiums.

Having good food nearby is essential when hosting sports fans for a big game, and there are many additional ways to make gameday that much more fun and memorable: Establish the Atmosphere Make the party area more festive by incorporating team colors. Feature these colors on serving bowls, plates, pennants, balloons and more. Remember to ask guests to wear the apparel of their favorite teams, hang photos of key

players and keep a ball on hand so guests can toss or kick it around between plays. Choose Fan-Favorite Foods Game day menu options can include anything from finger foods to more elaborate appetizers to main courses. Games can take several hours from start to finish, so make sure you have enough food to cover the duration of the event. Consider favorites like chicken wings, sliders, mozzarella sticks and deli sandwiches. Use a slow cooker to prepare chili or stew. A slow cooker also can be used to cook ribs or hot dogs in bulk. It’s also a handy tool to prepare pork loin for pulled pork sandwiches. Don’t Forget Desserts Desserts are an item you can delegate to guests. If you want to prepare your own desserts, small

and portable items are easier to manage and cut down on the mess while fans are cheering. In addition to the requisite potato chips and pretzels, cookies, brownies/blondies, cupcakes and fruit tarts are all small desserts to consider adding to the menu. Many items can be purchased ready-made if you want to avoid spending hours baking. Create a Viewing Location Guests will want an unobscured view of the game, and this may require moving around some furniture. The television should be located high enough so that all guests have a clear view. Think about moving a sofa to the perimeter of the room and bringing in folding chairs, which will allow a greater number of guests to sit. Tune several televisions to the same channel so guests moving around for food

or to use the restroom won’t miss any big plays. Game Day Beverages Beer and soft drinks are staples of sports-related entertaining and may be all you need to have on hand. You can create a gamethemed cocktail for guests who are not fans of beer. In addition, have water and other nonalcoholic options at the ready. An easy way to ensure drinks are cold is to plug the kitchen sink and fill it with water and ice. Place beverages inside and keep cups nearby. This eliminates the need to drag a cooler inside. When the party ends, simply pull the plug and let the water drain out. Gameday entertaining is very popular. Sports fans can’t wait to gather, root for their teams and socialize with friends.

Cold Weather Outdoor Entertaining Outdoor entertaining has never been more popular. As more and more homeowners turn their homes into their own personal oases, extending the party outdoors has become a bigger priority. According to the American Home Furnishings Alliance’s 2015 Outdoor Furniture Trend Report, out-of-doors areas on a property are the favored venues for celebrations with family and friends. While outdoor entertaining was once relegated to the warm weather seasons, advancements in technology have now made it more comfortable and enjoyable to entertain outdoors for much of the year. But hosts who want to extend the outdoor party after summer has come and gone should consider a

few important entertaining tips: Start the Party Early Summertime backyard barbecues and pool parties benefit from lateevening sunsets that illuminate patios and pool areas well into the evening. In addition, many hosts prefer to start such parties later in the day to avoid the sun during the early afternoon when it is at its most blazing. However, start the party earlier in the day when hosting in fall or early winter. Temperatures can drop considerably once the sun begins to set, so starting early can save hosts and their guests from cold air. Heat Things Up Summertime hosts might employ canopies to protect themselves and their guests from the heat,

and it’s important for hosts to take similar steps when the weather is chillier. The AHFA report found that 38 percent of homeowners intended to purchase fire pits for their outdoor entertaining areas, and such fire pits can keep guests warm as the sun goes down and the night air gets chilly. Fire pits have become must-have items for outdoor entertaining areas, and hosts can surely find one that suits their needs. Change the Menu Grilling hot dogs and hamburgers might still work when entertaining outdoors in fall and winter, but hosts may want to stray from other summertime fare like watermelon or pasta salad. Embrace the cold weather by roasting some nuts and making

s’mores over an open fire. In lieu of summertime beverages like lemonade and beer, serve hot chocolate or wine to keep guests warm. Ensure There is Adequate Lighting Mother Nature won’t offer much lighting when you host a party outdoors in late fall and early winter, so make sure your patios and sidewalks are well lit. Guests will want to see one another and what they’re eating, and well-lit walkways will reduce the risk that guests take a tumble or turn their ankles when walking to and from the house. Back in the Spotlight By: Jamie Lynn Ryan

This year, I gingerly decided to throw my tap shoes back into the ring by enrolling in my old dance studio’s Adult Tap class, after five years of “retirement.” There is something about the camaraderie of dancing with old friends – alumni, as we are referred to – that brings back a flood of happy memories of days gone by… days spent on stage in tutus and tiaras, sequins and sparkles, smiling for the audience in the dimly lit auditorium as we performed the routines we had perfected over the last six months. So, when the opportunity presented itself this September, I decided to give it a go. I have to admit, I wasn’t

sure what to expect after such a long absence. But, to my pleasant surprise, not much has changed. The old tap shoes still fit, the hardwood floor of the studio shines just as I remembered it, and the steps… well, they’re a work in progress, week by week, as my muscle memory slowly but surely recalls the footwork that at one point had been second nature. They say that those you spend years enjoying extracurricular activities with become like a second family of sorts over time, and the dance studio is no exception – especially after 20 years of essentially growing up with the same core group of girls. Fast forward a couple of decades, and some of these

same “girls” are now married with children of their own – a few dancing at the studio as well – or pursuing careers in various fields. To say “I feel old” would be an understatement; and yet, somehow, once we all enter the studio, those “grown up” problems seem to melt away. Flash back to the little girl in the pale yellow tutu, arms ﬂailing, feet scurrying in a mad dash to join her class onstage for her very ﬁrst dance recital… Where ever did the years go indeed? It’s nice to know that, as our lives continue to move at a frenzied pace day after day, there is still time to step into another mode, lace up the old tap shoes and shuffle our problems away. At least for an hour, anyway.

Sheriff Vincent F. DeMarco organizes the event each year in conjunction with the Middle Atlantic-Great Lakes Organized Crime Law Enforcement Network. enforcement agencies a priority of his Administration and he says the Annual Gang Intelligence Seminar gives officials the opportunity to share information on current trends and improve collaboration. Highlights of this year’s event focused on security in the Brentwood School District in the wake of the high profile murders of two students, and others, by suspected gang members, as well as the scope of the gang problem in Long Island’s suburbs.

Gang Intelligence Forum DeMarco stated, “Coordination and intelligence sharing are keys to combatting gangs. Gangs recognize no boundaries, and neither should we in law enforcement. As the winning team in the National Department of Energy’s BioenergizeME Infographic Challenge, the ThINK Discovery Science Research Program from Smithtown High School East traveled to Washington, D.C., to be honored during the Department of Energy’s Bioenergy Technologies

coordinator Maria Zeitlin, were recognized before an audience of hundreds of bioenergy professionals including scientists, administrators and stakeholders. The team’s winning infographic “Cellulosic Ethanol: Fuel of the Future,” which combined artistic styling, scientific research and clear representations about the process as well as the advantages and obstacles of cellulosic ethanol as a fuel source, was displayed throughout the event. The top three teams were counted down in a live webinar announcement hosted by the Bioenergy Office. “The excitement was palpable,” Zeitlin said. “All of the students celebrated together when we realized we swept the competition and placed first, second and third. The topic of bioenergy is relevant in today’s scientific climate, and the infographic challenge provided the opportunity to go beyond the typical classroom curriculum.” The Smithtown High School East team spent three days in Washington, D.C., with BETO staff where they were given a behind-thescenes tour of the Library of Congress. The team spent the afternoon at the U.S. Capitol meeting with their Congressman Rep. Lee Zeldin of New York.

Helping to reinforce several of the science concepts on the New York State Science Test, fourth-graders in Karen Dennis’ class at St. James Elementary School in the Smithtown Central School District held a day of pumpkin experiments on October 24th. With the help of an adult volunteer, students

conducted difference science experiments while also having fun. The activities included predicting and determining the weight of a pumpkin, measuring the circumference of the pumpkin, predicting and counting the number of seeds, predicting and measuring the volume of the pumpkin, and finding

Pumpkin Experiments the mass of the pumpkin seeds. Students were tasked with using their math skills to find the difference in weights and masses and also sorting and counting all the seeds in their pumpkins. Afterward, the fourth-graders had a chance to carve their pumpkins in jack-olanterns.

Webelos Woods To help whet the appetites of the Webelos Scouts as they learn about what to expect when entering their local Boy Scout Troop next year, the Matinecock District (Boy Scouts of America), held its 17th annual Webelos Woods event, as 22 Cub Scout Packs and 23 Boy Scout Troops from the Commack, Kings Park, and Hauppauge areas of Smithtown Township and from the entire Town of Huntington attended the weekend at Cathedral Pines County Park in Middle Island for an overnight camping trip. Saturday’s events had the 4th and 5th grade Webelos Scouts participating in instructions at various skill events and competitions. Scoutcraft knowledge and how-to’s were explained and demonstrated by Boy Scouts Troops in the Matinecock District; thirteen Scouting

skills stations were held (i.e. First Aid, Cooking, Knots & Lashings, Engineering, Fire Building, Map & Compass, Archery, Camp Gadgets, and Team Building games). The winner of the “made at the campsite” dessert contest went to Cub Scout Pack 379 (Northport) won the bake off for their Black Forest cake. Golf Invitational a Success The Long Island Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence, Inc. (LICADD) held its 36th annual R. Brinkley Smithers Golf Invitational Monday and brought in more than $286,000 to support its life-saving substance abuse prevention programs and comprehensive addiction

MARINE STUDY - Bretton Woods’ 5th grade students recently sailed aboard the Yankee III out of the Captree Boat Basin to study oceanographic and marine life on Long Island’s Great South Bay. The students learned how to make their own seining nets and how to use them to collect plankton. They then examined their catch under microscopes. The students also had an opportunity to see and touch different species of animal and plant life that reside in Long Island’s waters.

Kay Cameron Jewelers of Sayville announced recently it has nominated Matthew’s Giving Tree for the Jewelers for Children (JFC) Local Grant Program. JFC, a non-profit organization founded by the jewelry industry in 1999, is dedicated to helping children in need. The recently launched Local Grant Program has set aside $50,000 to fund ten $5,000 grants for local children’s charities around the country. Jewelers had the opportunity to nominate their favorite local, children’s charity. Public voting on the Jewelers for Children Facebook

page (www.facebook.com/ JewelersforChildren) will determine the top ten vote-getters to receive the grants. “We were pleased to participate in the third year of this exciting program from Jewelers for Children!” says Kay of Kay Cameron Jewelers. “It is such an easy way to help support the excellent work Matthew’s Giving Tree does locally to improve the quality of life for the children of our community. Now, we’re trying to get the word out to the public to vote so Matthew’s Giving Tree receives one of these generous grants.” Voting is simple.
