November 6th is Election Day. New Yorkers have an abysmal record of turning out to vote. In the 2016 presidential election, New York ranked 41 out of the 50 states for lowest turnout. In 2014, which was an off year election, similar to this year, New York ranked 49/50, with only one state having lower turnout than us. What will happen this year in New York? What will happen in Suffolk County? Will you be making your choice known or abdicating your power to others? This year we have seen increased polarization and heightened civil discourse throughout the country, in our state and even in our county. Although all the noise may appear to indicate that most voters are paying attention and interested in politics, this simply may not be the case. Yes, certainly there are more people speaking out. Students in high schools and colleges appear engaged and energized, holding marches and their own voter registration drives. Women as a group are more visible, running for public offices as well as organizing voter registration and voter turnout initiatives. We have also seen that voter turnout in the primaries this year was much higher than in the 2014 primary. However, in the 2014 general election, only 28 % of new Yorkers voted. How many of the 72% who did not vote, will this year? We hear from those who are engaged, but what about the silent majority? How many are turned off to politics because of the rhetoric? How many feel that there is no way they can make a difference so why bother? How many have become so mistrustful of what they hear and read, that they stop trying to find out about the candidates, their positions, and decide not to vote?
On November 6th, each of us will be voting for our member of the House of Representatives and also one US Senator from New York. We will also be voting for NY Governor, NY Lieutenant Governor, NY Comptroller and NY Attorney General, as well as our NY State Senator and NY State Assembly member. In addition, the Suffolk County Comptroller and Suffolk County Clerk are also on the ballot. There are also some special elections in several of our towns. Therefore, this election is important for all levels of our government. This outcome will affect everyone, those who vote and those who do not. Not voting is not protesting what is going on. It is giving up. It is relinquishing power and abdicating it to others. You can check your registration and polling place at SuffolkVotes.com or call Suffolk County Board of Elections (BOE) at 631 852-4500 or the NY Board of Elections at 800 367-8683. Know who is on your ballot and which candidates will represent you. If you cannot get to polls on Election Day because you will be out of the county, in a hospital, or have primary care duties and you have applied for an absentee ballot, you can send in your completed ballot, postmarked no later than November 5th, to the Suffolk County BOE. Ballots may also be hand delivered to the Suffolk County BOE or a poll site by 9pm on November 6th. The Suffolk County BOE has extended hours and will be opened Saturday, November 3rd from 9am to 1pm. Turn out and vote on November 6th. BE A VOTER. The power is yours.

For some, it’s the idea of bouncing back quickly after adversity. For others, it is the ability to remain stoic. Some see it as simply ones’ ability to face another day. My own definition may be counter-intuitive to some, but it is the courage to feel negative emotions, allowing the discomfort to effect you, grabbing the kernels of wisdom a negative experience brings, and then embarking upon the healing process and honoring whatever form it takes. I think it is a gross human misconception that to cry, to punch a pillow, to feel hopeless, to declare that the world is coming to an end, or any other things you need to do in the midst of grief or profound disappointment, somehow makes you not emotionally resilient. People have always observed me to be great at “bouncing back.”
What they don’t see is that I took the time I needed to be a complete mess! Yes, I said it. I take the time I need to honor the negative emotions, to give them their chance to have a field day. Then I dust myself off and move forward, feeling cleansed and renewed. It’s all part of the process. It’s a myth that strong people don’t cry. Can we put that one to bed right now, please? Those heavier, denser emotions are part of the learning experience, and they are necessary. With that being said, so is stacking the deck in your favor toward healing. Below is my cheat sheet for making it through tough, upsetting or scary times: Take a moment to STOP, look around and assess your immediate surroundings. Ask yourself if you are in any danger right in that moment. Chances are, the answer is no. Next, focus on 5 things you see around you. Then focus on 3 things you can feel around you (tactile). Third, focus on one thing you can smell. Fourth, focus on one thing you can hear.
Play classical or jazz music. I find that both of these genres of music have a soothing effect on the emotional part of the brain. Picture yourself as a character in a movie. The people around you are the supporting players. Think of the crisis before you as the script (the plot), and you as delivering the ultimate Oscarworthy performance. After all, life is a grand illusion anyway, and it is a safe bet to assume that you have starred in many other dramas, as well as some great comedies, in your lifetime. Go do something you enjoy. No matter how despondent you may feel, tell yourself you are going to take a short break from being “you,” and simply go do something enjoyable. Take a run, ride a bike, eat an ice cream cone, watch a funny movie, bake cookies, call an old friend, do something romantic with a significant other. I promise you, your problems can wait an hour. Lastly, when you do bounce back, pay it forward and use that newfound wisdom to help someone else.

There are many places where voters can go to be informed, hear from candidates themselves, learn about issues from non-partisan organizations. There are voter guides both paper and online. One example is the LWVNY guide, VotingNewYork.org, which will not only let each voter know candidates on their ballot, but also candidate bios, endorsements, and where they stand on important issues. The Maurer Foundation is a local nonprofit organization that has been for over serving the community 20 years. Their mission is to save lives through breast health education that focuses on breast cancer prevention, healthy lifestyle choices, early detection and risk reduction. Since their founding in 1995, they have reached almost 350,000 high school and college students, parents, coworkers and neighbors with lifesaving information on breast health, expanded their reach internationally, training their first breast health educator from outside the United States, annually educated over 200,000 people across the world on their website and trained breast health educators in local nursing programs, exponentially increasing their impact on Long Island. This October, The Maurer Foundation has schedueld 132 breast health programs, reaching 3,300 people with life-saving information on breast selfexams, breast cancer risk factors, risk reduction, myths, facts, mammogram guidelines and more! National Hispanic Scholars Four Smithtown High School West students – David Cabello, Alex Rodriguez, James Rogers and Jillian Unkenholz – have been recognized as 2018-2019 National Hispanic Scholars. Each year, the National Hispanic Recognition Program honors more
than 7,000 academically outstanding Hispanic/ Latino juniors who take the PSAT/NMSQT, maintain a cumulative 3.5 grade-point average or higher through junior year and are at least one-quarter Hispanic/ Latino. The National Hispanic Recognition Program was
initiated in 1983 by the College Board to identify outstanding Hispanic high school students and to share information about these academically wellprepared students with subscribing colleges and universities.

Tobacco Free Living MEMORIAL GAME - On October 5th, Smithtown High School West field hockey took on Smithtown High School East field hockey for the Diane Corey Memorial game. Corey was a three-sport athlete and enjoyed all sports during her time in the Smithtown Central School District. She was a true competitor who loved field hockey. American Law and Criminal Justice students at Northport High School were recently visited by Jaqueline Sullivan, a 2015 NHS graduate and the current outreach coordinator for the Town of Huntington Youth Court. Volunteering for this program gets students involved in the adjudication of real court cases that involve youth from the town. When a youth commits a crime, taking the case to the
Youth Court affords them the opportunity to have the offense wiped from their record — and this type of restorative justice has been recorded to result in much fewer repeated offenses. During her visit, Ms. Sullivan explained how the court operates, how to get involved and the skills one gains from the experience. Social studies teacher and Project PATCH coordinator David Scott strongly advocates for students to be exposed
and given opportunities to participate in real-life civic involvement. “For our students to be empowered to make a difference, they have to see that civic learning can be translated into civic action,” said Mr. Scott. “And the Huntington Youth Court is just one example of the many opportunities students are afforded to use their knowledge and skills to change the world around them.”
Field Hockey For a Cure Northport High School’s girls field hockey program hosted their second annual Play 4 a Cure tournament on September 29th. Nine Suffolk County field hockey teams came together to raise money for cancer awareness and research. The day included a memorial and survivor
walk, three hours of smallteam scrimmages, and team dance-offs. More than 200 athletes participated, and the day ended with the “Fight for a Cure” cheer. “A few years ago, I had the idea for a multi-team scrimmage fundraiser,” said coach and event organizer Gina Walling,

The vouchers have contributed to the 46 percent decline in homelessness among Veterans nationally since the Federal Strategic Plan to Prevent and End Homelessness was launched in 2010. “We are fortunate in our strong relationships with HUD, Long Island elected officials, and all of the other organizations dedicated to addressing the issue of veteran homelessness,” said Dr. Cathy Cruise, the interim director of the Northport VA Medical Center. “We are proudly working together to fulfill our nation’s promise to our veterans.” In the HUD-VASH program, VA medical centers (VAMCs) assess Veterans experiencing
homelessness before referring them to local housing agencies for these vouchers. Decisions are based on a variety of factors, most importantly the duration of homelessness and the need for longterm, intensive support in obtaining and maintaining permanent housing. Veterans participating in the HUD-VASH program rent privately owned housing and generally contribute no more than 30 percent of their income toward rent. VA offers eligible homeless Veterans clinical and supportive services through its medical centers across the U.S., Guam, Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands. The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), and U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), recently announced the award of $35 million in rental assistance vouchers to public housing agencies (PHAs) to combat homelessness among Veterans. These rental assistance vouchers, awarded through the HUD-Veterans Affairs Supportive Housing (HUD-VASH) program, will allow 212 PHAs across the country to provide permanent supportive housing for more than 4,000 homeless Veterans. Locally, the New York State Housing Trust Fund Corporation received $244,946 to support 25 rental assistance vouchers through this voucher allocation, bringing the total number of HUDVASH vouchers in Nassau and Suffolk Counties to more than 500. The HUD-VASH program combines rental assistance vouchers from HUD with case management and clinical services provided by VA. Since 2008, more than 93,000 vouchers have been awarded and approximately 150,000 homeless Veterans have

Homecoming Victory for Smithtown H.S. West It was a day of fun, food, festivities and football at Smithtown High School West on Oct. 20 as the local community celebrated with the annual homecoming carnival and football game. Not only did kids get to enjoy some inflatables, games and activities, but the crowd left happy, as the Bulls were victorious against visiting Riverhead, 25-13. Before the game kicked off, senior cheerleaders and football players were recognized for their years of commitment to Smithtown High School West. They individually
welcomed their loved ones onto the football field to take part in the special celebration. Once the football game started, it was back to business. The first half was full of back-and-forth action, but after an exceptional halftime show provided by the cheerleaders and Whisperettes kick line, High School West controlled the second half, leading to their victory. Matt Caddigan led the way with 145 yards rushing and two touchdowns, and on defense, the Bulls held up strong. Jharius Bernard picked off a pass and
returned it 45 yards for a touchdown, and Spencer Frank had an interception of his own, which led to a Chris Bruce-Tagoe 29yard touchdown score. Ethan Vanderbrink led the defense with 12 tackles and four sacks in what was a true team win. As is the annual homecoming tradition, the homecoming king and queen were recognized at halftime. The crowd erupted as Patrick Kinane and Chloe Mango were named king and queen, respectively.
