Students at Branch Brook Elementary School in Smithtown recently experienced the power of the Omega Man and Friends program, a fun and inspiring superherothemed bullying prevention program that empowered youngsters to feel good about themselves and their classmates and be respectful and responsible in life. The assembly was part of the school’s activities during National Bully Prevention Month, observed in late October. Ice Man (one of the Omega Man superheroes) led an assembly in the school gymnasium in which he instilled important values such as making healthy choices and refraining from bad decisions, including bullying behavior. He demonstrated the power of making good choices by tearing apart a telephone book-sized “book of bad decisions” and lifting some helpful volunteers in the air. Students were encouraged to dress as superheroes – a theme that will be in place at the school for future events, according to PTA cultural arts coordinator Lidia Dormier. Every student in the school will also sign a pledge to make smart, healthy decisions and demonstrate good character toward themselves, their elders and each other. “In the world of Omega

Time Of The Season By: Jamie Lynn Ryan And just like that, the holiday season is upon us. It seems like just last week we were soaking up the last few rays of sun at the beach, our toes in the sand, the waves crashing ashore… and now we’re busy digging out boots and scarves and stocking up on all things pumpkin spice. Such is the circle of life, the cycle of seasons and the wonder of Mother Nature. Speaking of, “sources” claim this winter will be colder than normal, with
record snowfall yet again. Shocking. Really, do we need to start obsessing about the first flake from now? It is what it is; it will be what it will be – the end. Deal with it. Or don’t, and hibernate until March. The mass hysteria is beyond maddening, especially since most meteorologists can’t seem to predict the next day’s forecast, let alone an entire season’s worth. Just sayin’. In the meantime, can we all just enjoy the cool, crisp air of Autumn? Play in the leaves, pick pumpkins and apples, check out a haunted
house or corn maze, create a unique Halloween costume, start planning your Thanksgiving menu ... Save the shovels for another day. For now, anyway. And as for those Christmas gift lists ... relax. There’s something about shopping for the holidays during the actual season, don’t you think? Those who are already finished are missing out on the true spirit in their rush to cross tasks off the to-do list. It’s not a race. It’s about putting some thought into it and enjoying the experience.

Hauppauge Middle School’s 7th graders recently studied the Age of Discovery on Exploration Day. The students began their day with a town meeting featuring the European monarchs who were portrayed by Hauppauge High School students. The monarchs debated

Exploration Day, the students participated in a writer’s workshop – aided by their teachers and History Club students from the high school – and concluded Exploration Day with a debate over the question: “Was exploration worth it?”
Hauppauge High School Senior Billy Recce has been named a Long Island Arts Alliance Scholar-Artist for the 2014-2015 school year. In 2007, Long Island’s school arts administrators launched a collaboration with Long Island Arts Alliance, Newsday and New York Community Bank Foundation to recognize students judged to be “the best of the best” on Long Island. High school seniors are nominated by their school districts and ten each from Suffolk and Nassau County receive the program’s highest honors. ScholarArtists also are eligible
students representing their clubs and activities, as well as some of the teams and organizations from the middle and elementary schools, marched from St. James Elementary School to the HS East football field. The exciting game against West Islip resulted
in a 31-28 win for Smithtown East. Half time performances by HS East’s Cheerleaders and Kickline Teams added to the spirit. The day concluded with the crowning of the Homecoming King and Queen, seniors Nicholas McMahon and Monique Abrams.

for scholarships to several Long Island colleges. Recce also was named a Winner of the 2014 VSA Playwright Discovery Competition by the Kennedy Center. The VSA Playwright Discovery Program is an annual competition that invites middle and high school students with or without disabilities to examine the disability experience and express their views through the art of scriptwriting. The program was begun in 1984 by Ambassador Jean Kennedy Smith and has continued annually since. This year’s recipients were
chosen from more than 400 applications nationwide. Recce is a composer, lyricist and librettist of Balloon Boy: The Musical, which was the winner of the 2014 Thespian Musicalworks competition. Balloon Boy: The Musical has been performed throughout the country from Lincoln, Nebraska to New York City, and will be produced in Fort Collins, Colorado this fall. In addition to musicals, his other works extensively cover social justice, and have been recognized by the United Nations, as well as performed at various venues across New York.
Cleaning The Stream
On Monday October 20th, eight young men from Boy Scout Troop 314 were honored by Legislator John Kennedy for continuing the Clean the Stream Initiative, started in his office two years ago. Furthermore, six of the eight men received additional accolades for completing a 58 mile hike in Utah during the summer thereby satisfying the requirements for the “50 Miler” Award. The honorees from
Troop 314 who completed the “50 Miler” were James Bie, Cullen Armstrong, Liam Armstrong, David Sim, Phillip Froehlich and Nick Froehlich. They accomplished this rare feat by hiking 58 miles in Bryce Canyon and Zion National Park over five days and completed a ten hour conservation project. In addition, Chris ScottoDiMaso and Cameron Young were honored for their participation in the Clean
the Stream Initiative. All eight men started working just south of Brooksite Drive and continued to Blydenburgh Park until the water became too deep to work in. They then continued work at Forest Lane and Tanglewood Drive and finally at Brook Lane. After working all day in the stream, the Troop saw significant progress as the stream flowed

World Language Inductees

On consecutive Thursdays, Smithtown High Schools East and West conducted their respective ceremonies to induct students into the World Language Honor Society. A total of 420 students representing both schools were inducted into at least one of the four honor societies representing the French, German, Italian and Spanish languages. This included a record number of students inducted into the HSW Italian WLHS and approximately 80 students each at HSE and HSW inducted into the Spanish WLHS.
Membership in the WLHS is the highest honor a high school student studying a foreign language can achieve and requires each inductee to maintain high marks in their language of study as well as their cumulative studies. It is, at the same time, an acknowledgment of students who have pursued knowledge of, and shown interest in, a second language and culture. Vincenza Graham, director of world languages, ESL and library media services, commended the inductees for realizing the importance of learning another language and acknowledged those
taking more than one foreign language who were inducted into multiple societies. “The acquisition of a second language will help with emigration, family, friends, work, travel, study abroad programs, required courses in college, food, culture and, most of all, the personal challenge to keep the mind healthy,” Graham said to the inductees at both high schools. “I commend each of you for the continued challenge to perfect and maintain fluency and interest in your language of study.”
First grade students from Rolling Hills Primary School in Commack spent a beautiful fall morning exploring science and nature at the Fort Salonga Apple Farm. The farmers explained the process
of pollination, and how the tiny, yet very helpful bees pollinate the trees and apple blossoms for a successful harvest. The children took in the sights at the farm and picked their very own Fuji
apples. After sampling some apple juice, they returned to Rolling Hills to write their personal narrative stories about their experience at the farm.

He went on to say that success in work depends on a person’s interpersonal skills. Afternoon keynote speaker Bill Daggett, Founder and Chairman of the International Center for Leadership in Education, offered insights
into making students college and career ready. He explained that data mining and artificial intelligence will become more sophisticated as people’s habits and experiences are monitored by computers. Pellettieri, Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum & Instruction of the Rockville Centre UFSD, and Alison Chiquitucto, kindergarten teacher from South Bay Elementary School in the West Babylon UFSD, were awarded the 2014 Fred Podolski Leadership and Innovation in Technology Award. PB&J Drive In order to help feed needy Long Islanders, Boy Scout Troop 125 collected donations of peanut butter and jelly at the Commack ShopRite and King Kullen supermarkets on Saturday, October 11th. All cash donations collected that day were used to purchase additional peanut butter and jelly. Despite rain throughout the day that kept some shoppers home, the boys collected a total of 1,118-pounds of peanut butter and jelly. The
collection was donated to the Troop’s sponsor, Commack United Methodist Church, which has a Peanut Butter and Jelly Gang that meets on the first Saturday of every month to make in excess of 1,000 sandwiches. All of the sandwiches are then delivered to St. Anne’s Church in Brentwood and distributed to the hungry on Long Island. Boy Scout Troop 125 meets every Tuesday from 7:30 to 9 p.m. at the Commack United
Methodist Church (486 Town Line Road, Commack) and is open to boys ages 11 through 18 residing in Commack, Huntington, Dix Hills, East Northport, Kings Park, Smithtown and the surrounding communities. Smithtown 2 For 2 The Smithtown High School East community enjoyed a glorious homecoming week that culminated with a thrilling come-from-behind victory by the varsity football HSE Bulls over West Islip on October 18th. The victory comes a week after Smithtown High School West defeated West Islip in its homecoming game. Homecoming Saturday began with school and district officials leading the parade of floats, bands members, various school organizations and student representatives from the four HSE classes. It started at St. James Elementary School and proceeded down Lake Avenue before ultimately landing on SHSE’s Tim Schroeder Field. The SHSE Bulls took an early 21-0 lead on three touchdown runs by quarterback John Daniggelis before West Islip came storming back to take a late 28-24 lead. Thanks to an impressive 64-yard kickoff return by Pat Clancy and an ensuing seven-play drive that ended with Daniggelis’s fourth score of the game, the Bulls pulled off the 31-28 victory, improving their record to 5-1 and sending the HSE faithful home happy.
Daniggelis finished the day with 95 yards rushing and 167 yards passing. Tom Skoff was his primary receiver with 92 yards. Tom Gomes kicked two extra points and added a 32-yard field goal. The HSE defense had two
varsity cheerleaders, who along with cheerleaders from other Smithtown schools and community groups, entertained fans throughout the game. Monique Abrams and Nicholas McMahon were crowned homecoming queen and king, respectively. The SHSE football moms held a fundraiser at the concession stand for the Tom Cutinella Athletic Scholarship Fund, created in memory of the Shoreham-Wading River varsity high school football player who died earlier this month following a collision on the field. A moment of silence was also held for Cutinella prior to kickoff, and SHSE players wore a decal sporting his name and jersey number 54. They also donned pink socks for Breast Cancer Awareness Month and held a moment of silence in memory of those who lost their lives to cancer. Spirit Week was conducted at SHSE sacks and an interception. on the days leading up to Saturday’s festivities, in The SHSE Chamber Choir sang the national anthem which students dressed to different themes each day, and the 15-time national champion Whisperettes varsity culminating with a Friday pep rally. kickline squad performed at halftime, as did the HSE
