The United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) earlier this year approved convalescent plasma as a treatment for COVID-19 under an Emergency Use Authorization (EUA). According to the FDA, the blood from those who recover from COVID-19 contains antibodies that are capable of fighting the COVID-19 virus. In other diseases caused by respiratory viruses, giving the liquid portion of the blood—plasma— that contains antibodies obtained from those who have recovered from the
virus may lead to more rapid improvement for those who are fighting the disease. Catholic Health Services’s St. Catherine of Siena Medical Center is partnering with New York Blood Center to host a Convalescent Plasma Drive on Friday, November 13. The event will run from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Smithtown hospital. Donations are by appointment only. Those interested in donating must meet the following criteria. • Have a lab-confirmed

Four students from Smithtown Central School District have been selected to participate in New York State School Music Association’s AllState Music Festival. From Smithtown High School East, Gabriela Foster has been chosen to play the violin in the
symphony orchestra, while Christopher Konopka, a tenor, will be part of the mixed chorus. From Smithtown High School West, Dominic Gibbons, a tenor, will be part of the mixed chorus, while Liam Reynolds was chosen to play jazz guitar in instrumental jazz.
Although they won’t get to experience the regular, live All-State Music Festival in Rochester, New York, NYSSMA has put together a virtual summit for students and educators to participate in at the beginning of December.

Three Smithtown Central School District students – Wenxiao Men from Smithtown High School East and Fiona Needham and Christina Unkenholz from Smithtown High School West – have been named semifinalists in the annual National Merit Scholarship Program. Approximately 16,000 semifinalists will have an opportunity to continue in the competition for some 7,600 National Merit Scholarships valued at
more than $30 million. To be considered for a Merit Scholarship award, semifinalists must fulfill several requirements to advance to the finalist level of the competition. More than 90% of the semifinalists are expected to attain finalist standing, and more than half of the finalists will win a National Merit Scholarship, earning the Merit Scholar title. More than 1.5 million juniors in 21,000 high schools entered the 2021 National Merit Scholarship
Program by taking the 2019 Preliminary SAT/ National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test. Merit Scholar designees are selected on the basis of their skills, accomplishments, and potential for success in rigorous college studies. Three types of National Merit Scholarships will be offered in the spring of 2021. Every finalist will compete for one of 2,500 National Merit $2,500 scholarships

Celebrating Milestone Birthdays Of Seven Centenarians
The Gurwin Jewish ~ Fay J. Lindner Residences assisted living community honored seven residents recently who reached or passed the century mark. The milestone birthday celebration – a sociallydistanced tea party – provided an opportunity for residents and staff alike to wish each centenarian well, and learn a bit about their lives. Adorned in top hats, tiaras and other festive attire, the residents were happy to spend the afternoon with some of their favorite staff members and fellow centenarians. The group of seven – aged 100 to 104 – includes a Holocaust survivor
as well as a retired NY City policeman, aircraft engineer, teacher and homemaker, among others. Displaying vibrant energy throughout the festivities, the distinguished group proved that age is just a number: Some, like Doris, 103, chatted with guests, answering questions, providing advice and expressing wishes for health for everyone; others like Ben, 101, enjoyed mixing and mingling, sharing past experiences and memorable lifetime events. The honored guests were showered with affection by members of Gurwin staff who offered
speeches, snapped photos, and even serenaded them with a personally penned tribute song. Michael Letter, Administrator/ Chief Operating Officer of the community, spoke with fondness for the residents and gratitude to staff during an opening speech, saying “Today’s event is a celebration of the lives, legacy and longevity of our inspirational centenarians. I feel very privileged to know them all and am grateful to our staff that provides the nurturing care that enables our extraordinary residents to stay engaged connected and thrive.

How To Prepare For A Unique Election Day Like many days that came before it in 2020, Election Day figures to be unique this year. The global COVID-19 pandemic has changed many aspects of life as people know it, and it figures to change how they vote this fall as well. The right to vote and participate in a representative government should never be taken for granted. Many people across the globe have no such right, so citizens of the United States should be grateful they can vote and express
that gratitude by doing their part and voting each year on Election Day. State and local governments may be approaching Election Day differently as they try to juggle their responsibilities to make voting accessible to all while simultaneously keeping voters safe during the pandemic. Voters can do their part by taking the following steps prior to Election Day, which is November 3, 2020. • Confirm you are registered to vote. Voter
registration deadlines differ by state. According to Vote. org, some states, including Colorado and Connecticut, allow eligible voters to register on Election Day and cast their ballots that very same day, but many states, such as Alaska, Hawaii and Louisiana, require voters to be registered 30 days prior to Election Day. A list of stateby-state voter registration requirements can be found at www.vote.org/voterregistration-deadlines/. • Learn the mail-in ballot policy in your state.
Many voters may not vote via mail-in ballots on a typical Election Day, but 2020 is not a typical year. The NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund, Inc. notes that all states offer some form of mailin ballots. Many states are asking voters to vote via mail-in ballots in 2020 in an effort to reduce voters’ risk of getting and spreading the COVID-19 virus. Confirm the mail-in ballot policy and procedure in your state as early as possible to make sure your vote is counted.
• Return your completed mail-in ballot as soon as possible. Many states are urging voters who plan to vote using mail-in ballots to return their ballots as early as possible. In a mailer sent to all registered voters, the Superintendent of Elections and the Board of Elections in New Jersey noted it is critical that voters return their mail-in ballots early in the upcoming election season. Mail-in ballots can be returned via the United States Postal Service (all ballots include postage
paid return envelopes), and voters also may be able to return their ballots in person at their designated polling locations or by placing the ballots in secure ballot drop boxes. Confirm your mail-in ballot return options with your local County Clerk of Elections well before Election Day. Election Day 2020 will be unique. Voters should not hesitate to take all necessary steps in advance of November 3 to ensure their votes are counted this fall.

the impoverished villagers of Turkana County, Kenya. I2SP’s pilot project is to alleviate water scarcity through the deployment of a self-sustaining solar microgrid that will power an atmospheric water generator. The technology extracts water vapor from the ambient atmosphere and condenses it into clean drinking water. The microgrid will be installed on the grounds of the Turkana Basin Institute Turkwel Research Facility in Turkana County as part of their hub for innovation. Turkana Basin Institute is one of the partners that will execute the project locally. SOSAED, an organization led by former director of Brookhaven National Laboratory Dr. Samuel Aronson, is another partner based in Turkana that will assist with the project. The organization’s fundraising goal for the project is $200,000. Donations are being accepted through GoFundMe and the
website, www.i2sp.org. “By improving the villagers’ access to a safe source of drinking water, this project will be absolutely transformative,” Alptekin said. “In fact, this project could be replicated in different penurious communities around the globe, making a profound impact in the mitigation of the global water crisis.” While helping to aid in the village’s drinking water, the project will have even more benefits to the community. It would improve healthcare, education, economics and productivity. Alptekin began this project at the end of 2019 and is focused on spreading the word about the organization’s mission. “I am still in the early stages of fundraising,” she said. “And I realize $200,000 seems like a lot of money. But if we can just get the word out, every dollar will help make a difference in meeting our goal.”
