he common apprehension of doctors and hospitals was put at ease for kindergarten students at Dogwood Elementary School in the Smithtown Central School District during an interactive and educational Teddy Bear Clinic on October 14th. During the workshop, which was led by representatives from Stony Brook University Hospital, students learned to perform proper medical treatments on a “sick” stuffed animal or doll they had brought in from home.

Long Island’s largest food drive event, the 7th Annual Bethpage Turkey Drive to benefit Island Harvest Food Bank, will take place on Wednesday, November 18th, from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. at Bethpage Federal Credit Union’s headquarters located at 899 South Oyster Bay Road in Bethpage. Long Islanders are asked to drop off frozen turkeys, non-perishable food items (except those in glass containers), supermarket gift cards or cash donations. These donations will go directly to Island Harvest which will then help supply Thanksgiving holiday meals to the more than 300,000 hungry Long Islanders through its distribution network of 570 food pantries, soup kitchens and other feeding programs on Long Island. “Bethpage Federal Credit Union is an avid supporter of Island Harvest and its mission to end hunger on Long Island,” said Linda Armyn, Senior Vice President, Bethpage. “For the past six years, the annual Bethpage Turkey Drive has had an immensely positive impact on the Long Island community, who year after year come out to help their neighbors experiencing food insecurity. Mercy Center held its fifth annual run/walk over the bridge for homeless teens at Smith Point Park on Saturday, October 17th. Participants from all over the Island came out to support the cause and enjoy the beautiful and unique 3.1 mile course over the bridge. The most senior runner was 79 and the youngest was 6; both belong to the running club North Country Road Warriors. They were among 20 other club members who came this year to run and walk the

Currently, Cancer is responsible for 20,000 deaths a day. 20,000 lives lost to this illness. First off, I want to apologize for the morbidity already displayed one sentence into this essay. If you’re looking to read about average summer vacation stories, or the day someone won their first trophy, I would advise you to stop reading. I don’t write this to receive sob stories from countless people, or even gain sympathetic condolences. I just want to put life into perspective. I want to inform you readers of the true and raw meaning of life, and what many people have forgotten over the years while in the midst of everyday life. The pursuit of happiness is defined as a fundamental right mentioned in the Declaration of Independence to freely pursue joy and live life in a way that makes you happy. I think many people

have forgotten this idea, and it saddens me to feel the need to write this, informing people on how to truly live. I lost a dear friend of mine recently. She was a family friend, but I definitely considered her family - like an aunt. She was diagnosed with cancer about a year ago, and it only took a few months for the cancer to completely demolish her body. It’s not fair how she died so suddenly and irrationally. Life works mysteriously like that. I can’t quite put into words the feelings I encountered the day she died. But that’s a whole other story. One regret I have whilst she was still alive was not laughing and smiling a little bit more when I was still in her presence. I’m a glass half full type of person. I like to see things in positive perspectives. Life is way too short to be anything but happy.

In my eyes, if you have a roof over your head and food on the table, you’re lucky. The countless complaints that our society has adapted to consider “normal” is absurd… Now, I’m not going to lie and say I’ve never complained before. Hell, I probably complain a little too much. But luckily, I have the decency to step back and view the bigger picture in terms of the pursuit of happiness and pure joy and all of that cheerful nonsense. Live a little. Don’t let the little things bring you down. Be grateful for family and love and joy and laughter and all that good stuff that doesn’t cost a penny. Happiness is a free commodity. Only God knows when your life is coming to an end, so take advantage of every day. Say your “I love you’s” and give your biggest hugs and don’t regret a thing. Life is way too short - I can’t stress this enough.

Smithtown High School East students participated in a handson science exploration of the Nissequogue River on October 9th. The school’s participation in the “Day in the Life of the Nissequogue River” program was led by Maria Zeitlin, Smithtown High School East’s research coordinator, and organized by Brookhaven National Laboratory, the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation, the Suffolk County Water Authority and the Central Pine Barrens Commission. As part of the project, HSE students explored

areas of Short Beach to collect scientific data in regard to the status of associated surface waters, gain knowledge about natural resources and explore how this piece of the river fits into a larger ecosystem. “This is our second year participating in this collaborative event,” Zeitlin said. “The Nissequogue River affords a wonderful site for students to be citizen scientists and environmental stewards. They worked diligently and collaboratively in teams to take a snapshot of the conditions of the river, and I know they came away with a renewed appreciation for their local waterways

and the importance of protecting them.” Smithtown East science research students prepared for this event by learning sampling techniques, chemical and physical analyses, as well as species identifications. They also learned to be observers of the natural environment, and specifically how to measure the health of their local estuaries. The October 9th trip was one of four events, which includes more than 30 organization and agency partnerships, 29 school districts and more than 1,700 students. Other areas of study included Carmans River, Connetquot River and Peconic Estuary.

As part of their commitment to serving others, the Boy Scouts of Troop 125 collected donations of peanut butter and jelly at the Commack ShopRite and King Kullen supermarkets on Saturday, October 17th. The boys collected a total of 1,232-pounds of peanut butter and jelly and $435.00 in cash that will be used to purchase additional PB&J. All proceeds of the drive were donated to the Troop’s sponsor, Commack

United Methodist Church, which has a “Peanut Butter and Jelly Gang” that meets on the first Saturday of every month to make in excess of 1,000 sandwiches. All of the sandwiches are then delivered to St. Anne’s Church in Brentwood and distributed to Long Islanders in need. Here I come to save the day, yet again, with my witty observations on life from within the confines of my bowl. The Human, it seems, is busy getting herself ready for a wedding – one, I might add, that I was not invited to. And here I had my bowtie and top hat all picked out for the occasion. How rude. I suppose this means my dinner will be late too. What does a fish have to do to maintain a steady feeding schedule? Sometimes it’s twice a day, sometimes once… four flakes, five… sometimes only a couple when I knock the rest down to the gravel with my fins, never to be seen again. Speaking of which, these

late-night feedings have to stop. Back and forth, I swim my laps, anxiously waiting for my Human to arrive. Eventually, after days of starvation {10 hours or so} I give up hope, putting myself to bed with no supper. But wait, is that a light I see? I groggily press my nose against the glass, dimly making out the shadow of my Human, apologizing for getting home so late. I sleepily bounce from one branch of my plant to another, aimlessly chomping at imaginary flakes, before putting myself back to bed, thoroughly unsatisfied. I suppose I’m always hungry though. I have no concept of time, or quantity. As many times as I find flakes fluttering into my bowl, I will

greedily inhale them, barely pausing to chew in between. From my experience, you have to savor these feeding times, since you never know when the next one may come around. Sort of like the Mets and their quest for the World Series. I haven’t been around long, but I hear this is a pretty rare occurrence. Me, I tend to root for the Marlins. Us fish gotta stick together, after all. But, I suppose I’m a New Yorker, officially. Maybe my Human will buy me some blue and orange gravel so I can root, root, root for the home team…you know, on our trip to the pet store that I’ve been promised since August. ‘Til next time, this is Buddy, signing off.

Suffolk County Legislator Robert Trotta congratulated George Marshal III of Boy Scout Troop 70 of Setauket at his recent Eagle Scout Court of Honor. George, a resident of St. James, earned the

distinguished rank of Eagle Scout through his commitment to the community, as well as the completion of his Eagle Scout Project, which was to build an outside parrot cage at the Sweetbriar Nature Center

in Smithtown. George is a freshman in college and noted that scouting taught him to be prepared, which he found useful for when his was packing to go away to school.

Resident Recognized As part of Smithtown’s 350 anniversary celebration, the Fort Salonga Civic Association took residents back in time to the year 1781, showcasing such events as a working military camp, as well as music, cooking and artillery demonstrations, and the reenactment of the Battle of Fort Slongo. Prior to the battle sequence, Suffolk County

Legislator Rob Trotta introduced WWII and Korean veteran, Al Hyde, who resides in Fort Salonga. Mr. Hyde was shot down over North Africa and although he suffered serious facial injuries, he hid for four hours until two soldiers could reach him by a truck. Fellow fighter pilots flew over him to protect him from an attack by

German soldiers. Mr. Hyde continued to fly military planes, including more than 70 missions over Mt. Everest to provide needed supplies to the Chinese. After his service, he was an Eastern Airline pilot for more than 30 years. He grew up in Kings Park and raised his own family in Smithtown before moving to Fort Salonga.

Bringing Awareness to a Local Lvl November was designated as National Alzheimer’s Disease Awareness Month by President Ronald Reagan in 1983. Since then, the recognition was enhanced to also honor the Caregivers who aid Alzheimer’s patients. In honor of this national event, Alzheimer’s Disease Resource Center, Inc. (ADRC) is reminding everyone that nearly 60,000 Long Islanders suffer from the disease each day. Alzheimer’s disease is a degenerative brain condition that affects

cognitive function and consequently the ability to perform day to day tasks. At the time of President Reagan’s designation, fewer than two million Americans suffered from the disease. Today, that number has soared to more than 5.4 million people. Alzheimer’s care can be very costly both for patients and their families, who often serve as the primary caregivers. There are presently more than 15 million people caring for Alzheimer’s and dementia patients throughout the

country. This includes not only assisted living professionals, but also children, spouses/partners, friends and neighbors. In 2015, Alzheimer’s and other dementias will cost the nation $226 million in both medical and general care services. In an effort to increase awareness and support for Long Islanders and their families who are affected by the disease, ADRC is hosting two events in November. This includes the organization’s Second Annual Give from

the Heart “Athletes for Endurance” competition, which is being held at gyms across Long Island throughout the month of November. This event promotes physical fitness, considered a vital element to fighting dementia, by challenging endurance athletes to do as many push-ups as possible. This year’s series is in memory of Dorothy C. Camilleri, who passed away in 2013 after battling Alzheimer’s disease. To sponsor a team or individual, or to make a donation, please visit the

event page. Additionally, ADRC is hosting the final segment of its 2015 Seminar Series on Monday, November 9th. This event, titled “Stem Cell Research: Advancing Cures for Neurological Diseases,” features Dr. Scott Noggle, Vice President of the New York Stem Cell Foundation and Charles Evans Senior Research Fellow for Alzheimer’s Disease. Hauppauge 7th grade students recently had the opportunity to celebrate Explorer Day. Their adventure began with an introduction by Middle School Principal Maryann Fletcher followed by a lively debate by the “monarchs” of Europe and Asia on whether they should explore the new world or not. Played by Hauppauge High School students, the monarchs discussed the benefits of God, gold and glory as well as ethnocentrism and the high cost of exploration. The Middle School students then set out to explore informational stations: Magellan’s Trip, Star Lab, aquatic Touch Tank, Farm Animals, Shipbuilding, Reasons for Exploration, Colombian Exchange, Native American Legacy, Discovering the Universe, Orienteering, Cooking and much more. The students

recorded information from each station, including: exploration, encounter and/or exchange. Their research objective was to discover an answer for Explorer Day’s essential question: “To what extent does exploration, encounter or exchange impact history?” Hauppauge High School’s History Club members, let by Social Studies Teacher Ellen Robbins, either led or escorted the Middle School students to each discovery station. Following the final rotation, the 7th graders wrote their individual assessments with assistance from teachers and the High School students who helped them to find evidence to support their claim for the essential question. Explorer Day concluded with an informed debate between groups of students who were for exploration

and those who were against exploration. Each year, Hauppauge Middle School Administrative Assistant Michelle Aversano finds interesting new presenters for Explorer Day. The Star Lab from the Cradle of Aviation Museum, Discovering the Universe from the Vanderbilt Museum, and Aquatic Touch from The Waterfront Center were three of the students’ favorites. Seventh grade Social Studies Teachers Jeff Parrett and Lauren Kurrass – along with Director of Social Studies Doreen Gordon – planned the station categories and the writing and debate portions of Explorer Day. Overwhelmingly, the students commented that Explorer Day “was fun, it went fast, the stations were interesting and they enjoyed the day.
