Long Island Coalition for the Homeless www.addessthehomeless.org Long Island Coalition for the Homeless (LICH) was founded in 1985. Their mission is to end homelessness on Long Island and alleviate the issues associated with homelessness and poverty for homeless and at risk persons in Nassau and Suffolk Counties.

LICH runs a local Boutique that gives people in need a chance to come and pick out clothes and other essential items, all for free. With the help of generous people, they collect items year-round for people experiencing homelessness.

Located in the Amityville Community Resource Center, this Boutique is open on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday from 10AM-3PM by appointment only (at this time, shelter staff/case managers must schedule an appointment to pick up their clients’ items). Upon entering the boutique, you can expect to ﬁnd clothing, nonperishable food, new bedding and pillows, personal care and feminine care items, toiletries and much more! The clothing options can range from casual to business attire and there is clothing available in all sizes; infant through adult.

The most needed items are baby diapers, formula and wipes, toothbrushes, toothpaste, feminine products, plus-size clothing, school supplies (especially binders, dividers and spiral notebooks), along with non-perishable food items. They are also looking for new and gently used housewares.

NOTICE OF AVAILABILITY OF A FINDING OF NO SIGNIFICANT IMPACT AND NOTICE OF DESIGN APPROVAL NEW YORK STATE DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION PROJECT IDENTIFICATION NUMBER 0229.48 OPERATIONAL IMPROVEMENTS LIE (I-495) AT CROOKED HILL ROAD (CR-13) TOWNS OF ISLIP AND SMITHTOWN SUFFOLK COUNTY As requested by the New York State Department of Transportation, the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) has made a Finding of No Significant Impact (FONSI) for the above project in accordance with Title 23, Code of Federal Regulations Part 771. The FONSI is based on the Final Design Report / Environmental Assessment (FDR/EA) that was prepared for the project, which selected Alternative 4 to be advanced to final design and construction, as well as on comments from the public. This project will be built in two phases to modify the interchange of the Long Island Expressway (I-495) at Crooked Hill Road in the Towns of Islip and Smithtown, Suffolk County. The project will add two new off-ramps to be constructed under the first phase and one new on-ramp to be constructed under the second phase. In addition to the proposed ramps, the first phase of this project will improve the merge length onto the southbound Sagtikos State Parkway and reconfigure the on-ramp to the southbound Sagtikos State Parkway from the Pilgrim State Hospital. The FHWA has approved the request by NYSDOT for design approval for this project on September 9, 2021. Design approval constitutes the Department of Transportation's final decision to proceed with the construction of the project. Design approval is based in part on the FDR/EA dated August 2021, the FHWA's September 7, 2021 FONSI (in accordance with the National Environmental Policy Act of 1969 as amended); and the NYSDOT's SEQRA determination that the project will have no significant effect on the environment. NYSDOT has prepared a Determination of No Significant Effect dated September 14, 2021 in accordance with Article 8 of the Conservation Law of New York State and 17 NYCRR Part 15. The FONSI is available for review during business hours at the Office of the Regional Director, New York State Department of Transportation, 250 Veterans Memorial Highway, Hauppauge, NY 11788 or the Office of the Division Administrator, FHWA New York Division, Leo W. safely secure over twenty three (55) gallon drums, eighteen (1) cubic yard boxes, one miscellaneous container for specialized hazardous waste, and two full 30 cubic yard roll-off containers loaded up with paints/solvents, etc. The exact weight collected was 18.11 tons (scale house net) in hazardous materials. Materials were collected and manifested for disposal by Radiac Research Corp. In addition to residents dropping off hazardous household waste, many circled their vehicles around to pick up bags of free mulch on the way out. A portion of the wastes collected for manifested disposal include: waste oil based paints/flammable paints, gasoline, paint thinners, waste gases, petroleum distillates, flammable solids, oxidizers liquids and solids, sodium/ potassium nitrates, acids, corrosives, pesticides, herbicides, fertilizers, misc. toxic liquids (i.e. Chlordane, etc.) and solids, lacquers, lithium batteries, battery acids and various other toxic compounds. The New York State DEC is expected to reimburse the Town for 50% of the contractor expense for this event. The 2022 HHW events are being planned and

The Town of Smithtown Department of Environment and Waterways collected over 18 tons of waste at the Hazardous Household Waste event. On Saturday, October 2nd, 446 Smithtown households participated in safely disposing 36,220 pounds of toxic items, which are prohibited in regular curbside waste pickups. “The sheer weight in toxic products collected over the weekend corroborates just how important protecting the environment is to our residents. As a community we’ve become more proactive, removing old and harmful products from the home and checking labels at the store. Legislator Rob Trotta Recognizes Detective Franco Frantellizzi

At the October General Meeting of the Suffolk County Legislature, Legislator Rob Trotta, who was once a partner of Detective Franco Frantellizzi when he was on the police force, presented him with a proclamation to acknowledge his retirement from the department after 32 years of dedicated service. “Detective Frantellizzi has had an exemplary and

accomplished career while proudly serving the people of Suffolk County. He embraced his job and the community,” said Suffolk County Legislator Trotta. After graduating from the Police Academy, Frantellizzi joined the Third Police Precinct and later transferred to the Sixth Police Precinct, where he remained for the rest of his career. Throughout his tenure,

Detective Frantellizzi received more than 55 letters of commendation, and according to police records, had over 2,500 arrests, the most of any other officer in the history of the department. All 18 Legislators signed the proclamation commending his work ethic, commitment, and dedication to his job and the community he served.

Meet the Winners: 2021 Walk Safe Long Island Scholarship

Walk Safe Long Island— the New York Coalition for Transportation Safety’s law-based pedestrian and bike safety campaign— has chosen the winners of its annual scholarship contest: Claire Levasseur of Nassau County and Jacob Harris of Suffolk County. Each recipient was awarded a $1,000 scholarship for their winning essay about a New York State Vehicle and Traffic law of their choosing. “Determining the scholarship recipients is always an extremely tough decision to make,” says Cynthia Brown, Executive Director of the New York Coalition for Transportation Safety (NYCTS). “All of the essays were very well written, but Claire and Jacob’s entries stood out to our panel of judges and received the highest combined scores.” This is Walk Safe Long Island’s third consecutive annual scholarship contest, and first essay contest. In 2019, the contest called upon students to create and submit a video PSA about pedestrian safety. Last year’s scholarships were awarded to students who submitted the most unique and dynamic

Smithtown High School West students in Kimberly Williams’ marine biology class had the opportunity to wade into their environment on Sept. 28 as they visited Sunken Meadow Park. At one point, students donned waterproof boots/

pants and headed into the water. Then, using a large net while in pairs, the group scooped up assorted fish and other marine life to study what creatures resided there. Assorted fish were brought back to tanks in their classroom for further study.

Earlier, the group also looked closely at the upper and lower salt marsh at low tide and determined what living things they could find. Among the plants and animals: smooth cord grass, herbaceous seaweed, fiddler crabs and ribbed mussels.

Brown is best known for making sculpture that portrays her personal story as a naturalist, inspired by the beauties and tragedies of wildlife and American history. Her artwork focuses on anthropological and environmental concerns of extinction and the human condition in reference to the natural world. She has exhibited her large-scale public works throughout the Northeast from Maine and Vermont to Virginia and Tennessee and exhibits her smaller sculptures in galleries across New York State and Long Island. NYC artist Kathy Levine makes art about the importance of the natural environment to our well-being. The pieces are handmade from recycled paper cast over natural objects like trees, bark, leaves, branches and other forms found in nature. She has exhibited her work and won awards across the country from Brooklyn to Michigan to

Matinecock District Hosts Touch–A-Truck Recruiting Event

On September 26, the Matinecock District (Scouts BSA) held their first ever Touch A Truck recruiting event. In cooperation with the Kings Park School District and School Supervisor Timothy Eagan, the event was held at the Kings Park Middle School. The community was able to visit various police vehicles, fire trucks, a garbage truck, a street sweeper truck, buses and Ambulance “trucks.” At each of the vehicles, the drivers of the trucks were able to discuss safety issues. At the fire truck location, the volunteer firefighters were explaining the tools they use on their truck, as

did the police and their emergency vehicles. The school bus that was at the touch-a-truck event had a special bus for wheelchairs and the drivers were able to explain how that works. Volunteers from Cub Scout Pack 539 (Kings Park), Pack 406 (Huntington/Melville), and Boy Scout Troop 539G (Girls Troop) of Kings Park were able to help promote scouting awareness in the community . There were over 330 parents and children from ages 1 to 11. The boys and girls with their parents and guardians participating came from all over from Commack , Kings Park and Smithtown areas as well as

from Port Washington to enjoy the trucks and learn about all the fun scouts have. CHECKING ON THE IMPROVEMENTS TO COUNTY ROAD 14 - Suffolk County Legislator Rob Trotta (right) was joined by local businessman Larry Flynn (left) to check on the improvements to County Road 14, which is being done from Old Northport Road to Route 25A in Kings Park. The work, anticipated to be completed by this November, entails resurfacing the roadway, drainage repairs, sidewalk improvements, and traffic signal work. According to Larry Flynn, these are the first sidewalk improvements since 1963 on Indian Head Road. “I was only 2 then. It is one of the few county roads in my district you can expect the road to be repaved after the sidewalk and curbs are done. I wish I had more pull on the LIE,” said Suffolk County Legislator Rob Trotta.

Breast Cancer Survivors Though most breast cancer survivors don’t get cancer again, the American Cancer Society notes that they are at higher risk for getting some types of cancer. According to the ACS, the most common second cancer in breast cancer survivors is another breast cancer. That only underscores the importance of continuing to get screened even after successful treatment. In addition to a second breast cancer, breast cancer survivors have a greater risk of developing salivary gland cancer, cancer of the esophagus, stomach cancer, colon cancer, uterine cancer, and ovarian cancer. The risk for thyroid cancer, sarcoma, melanoma of the skin, and acute myeloid leukemia also is greater after successful treatment for cancer.
