Studying Marine Life

retton Woods’ fifth grade students recently sailed aboard the Yankee III out of the Captree Boat Basin to study oceanographic and marine life on Long Island’s Great South Bay. The students learned how to make their own seining nets and how to use them to collect plankton. They then examined their catch under microscopes. The students also had an opportunity to see and touch different species of animal and plant life that reside in Long Island’s waters.

Star Musicians Hauppauge High School student-musicians were selected to participate in the 2016 NYSCAME/ Suffolk and SCMEA AllCounty High School Music Festival on November 7th, 17th and 18th, 2016, in Northport, New York. The Festival will feature performances of high school juniors and seniors in Symphonic Band, Mixed Chorus, Women’s Chorus and Symphony Orchestra. This morning, I was hoping to see the sunrise. Not because I have never had the privilege of experiencing one, but because I thought it would be a fitting way to mark what would have been my Grandpa’s 90th birthday, an occasion we, as a family, are forced to bittersweetly celebrate in his absence. Somehow, I thought the golden rays welcoming a brand new day might make the sadness simply melt away. Unfortunately, when I awoke, it was not to the promising haze of dawn, but to an overcast sky brimming with rain clouds, seemingly ready to shower the land at any given moment. I suppose that was fitting in its own way. Realistically, the prospect

of “celebrating” any occasion following the passing of someone special is a fairly impossible task. Absent is the guest of honor, replaced by memories of days gone by and happier times. They say these things grow easier with time, but I’m not sure that is truly the case. Perhaps we just learn to adapt and deal with them differently... but the pain remains all the same. First holidays, especially, seem to take the biggest emotional toll on those loved ones left behind, as they attempt to pick up the pieces and carry on as usual. The problem is, there is no “norm,” so to speak. Traditions seem empty, and those things that once brought us joy are tinged with melancholy. Life goes on, of course, and happiness is found in

other outlets as new customs are established and flourish over time. The memories we treasure become the backbone, the foundation, of our existence, as we build upon them and incorporate new generations and settings. It can be a painful process, to be sure, but those memories, and the prospect of making new ones, provide the motivation to forge ahead. And so, on this, my Grandpa’s 90th birthday, I remember the loving man at the center of so many of my happiest memories. I find solace in knowing that he is always with me, in one form or another, along with all of my loved ones who have passed on through the years. And I take comfort in the fact that so many special people have touched my life.

Three Smithtown Central School District students – Sarah Adamo from Smithtown High School West and Anjali Balamurugan and Erika Nemeth from Smithtown High School East – are among more than 400 semifinalists named across the United States in this year’s prestigious Siemens Competition, the nation’s premier competition in math, science and technology for high school students. Additionally, Adamo and Nemeth have both had their projects selected to compete in the regional finals in November. Individual and team winners from the

regional competitions advance to the final phase of the contest which takes place in December in Washington, D.C., where they will compete for top prizes of up to $100,000 in scholarships. Adamo’s project, “Using Nematostella vectensis to spotlight the ancient roots of Nicotinic Cholinergic Neurotransmission,” is an in-house study with all the experimental work conducted at Smithtown High School West. Nemeth’s project is “Cell-Based delivery of Gene-Silencing products Via Gap Junction Channels.” Balamurugan’s project is “Blood metal Concentration

in Association with Thyroid Hormones and Autoantibodies in Avid Seafood Consumers.” Launched by the Siemens Foundation in 1999, the Siemens Competition promotes excellence in math, science and technology and is recognized by colleges and universities as the premier math and science research competition in the United States. More than $600,000 in college scholarships is awarded to students annually through the Siemens Competition during regional and national events administered by Discovery Education.

Helping Combat Cancer Great Hollow Middle School in the Smithtown Central School District held its fifth annual Coaches vs. Cancer event on October 13th. Each year, the coaches plan a day for the school teams to host a game, and students and faculty are invited to watch them participate in various after-school sports. It is a schoolwide effort to raise funds for the American Cancer Society. Thanks to the help of the PTA, student and adult volunteers, the event raised

close to $2,400. Donations came from students, teachers, staff and parents. More than 275 studentathletes took to the fields to compete – including football, field hockey and boys and girls soccer – and another 250 students came out to support the cause. The cheerleaders and kickline performed during halftime at the football game. The cross-country and girls tennis teams helped to collect donations from spectators. “The entire school

showed great support and amazing spirit to help make this event successful,” said organizer and coach Colleen McKillop. “The coaches praised all the student-athletes for their efforts on the field, as well as their choice to be involved in a very important cause. Cancer claims millions of lives each year, and the Great Hollow family wanted to do something to combat that. We believe every little bit helps.”

Art Educator of the Year

Reflecting on Anziano’s journey to teaching Art is to understand that her muse is the love of Art History and the joy of sharing this through teaching. When she received her B.F.A. in the History of Art at Ohio State University, Anziano did not imagine sharing her knowledge with future generations. She initially worked with the J. Paul Getty Trust and the Metropolitan Museum of Art. She then met Leilani Duke and was introduced to Discipline-Based Art Education (DBAE), and subsequently joined the Registrar staff when the

Senior Info Fair At the request of the Fairfield St. James Civic Association, Suffolk County Legislator Robert Trotta recently hosted a Senior Information Fair for its residents. Suffolk County government offices and local organizations provided information about the programs and services they offer for seniors. The Suffolk County Sheriff’s Office issued Senior Emergency ID Cards and offered information about their Project Lifesaver and Yellow Dot Programs, as well as collecting expired/

unused medications. Nurses from St. Catherine of Siena Medical Center checked the blood pressure of residents and provided information on staying healthy. More than 200 people attended the event. Legislator Trotta would like to also thank the other participating organizations that shared their resources with the residents: Suffolk County Office of the Aging, Suffolk County Department of Health Services, Cornell Cooperative Extension of Suffolk County, Town of Smithtown Senior Center, St. Johnland

Adult Day Programs, NYS Attorney General’s Office, Long Island Museum, Long Island Alzheimer’s Association, Retired Senior Volunteer Program, Senior Net, Clear Captions and the Senior Advocate. There was also a drawing for a free jar of jam made by Legislator Trotta. “This is a great opportunity for the residents of Fairfield to see what organizations are out there that provide a variety of programs that they can utilize or benefit from,” said Suffolk County Legislator Rob Trotta.

Hauppauge School District is honored to announce that Bretton Woods and Pines Elementary School Teacher Elizabeth Anziano was named the 2016 New York State Art Educator of the Year from Region 10. The Bay Shore resident will receive an award and special recognition at the New York State Art Teachers Association (NYSATA’s) 68th annual conference titled “Tradition & Innovation,” which will be held on November 20, 2016 at the Desmond Hotel and Conference Center in Albany, New York.

New York Historical Society announced the critical inventory of its American Art collection. Anziano was encouraged to pursue teaching Art while at the Islip Art Museum. She discovered happiness and fulfillment from her passion for Art and Education while earning a M.A. in Teaching at Dowling College. “Art doesn’t just imitate life – it IS Life! Helping students discover this was the joy of both,” she described. Her goal is to reveal the DaVinci in every student and to witness their joy in creating. In summer 2016, Anziano painted in Tuscany and visited Leonardo, Michelangelo and Raphael – bringing them all home for her students. “After having had the opportunity and pleasure to visit Ms. Anziano’s classroom, and watch her interact with students, I am not surprised to learn of her special recognition,” stated Superintendent of Schools Dr. Dennis O’Hara. “She is most deserving, and we are most fortunate to have Ms. Anziano teaching our students.”

Pairing Up Hands-on pumpkin activities recently took place at Branch Brook Elementary School in the Smithtown Central School District. Kindergartners in Sharon Weissman’s class and third-graders in Annamarie Polito’s

class joined together for a pumpkin experience. The two classes buddied up and worked together with one pumpkin per group, grown in Mrs. Polito’s dad’s farm in upstate New York. The students worked

Natural Resource cooperatively to count the lines in their pumpkin (indicating how long the pumpkin was on the vine), measure their pumpkin with unifex cubes and conduct a float/sink experiment with their pumpkin.

Students from Smithtown High School East’s ThINK Discovery Research program in the Smithtown Central School District had the opportunity to conduct research right in their own backyard when they participated in the third annual “A Day in the Life of the Nissequogue River” event on October 7th. The school’s participation in the program was led by Maria Zeitlin, Smithtown High School East research coordinator, and coordinated by

Brookhaven National Laboratory, the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation, the Suffolk County Water Authority and the Central Pine Barrens Commission. With the help of natural resource experts, the Smithtown East students explored and collected firsthand information to learn how their river and estuary fits into the larger ecosystem at Short Beach. Their work will determine the health of the aquatic ecosystem and biodiversity

of the Nissequogue River. Four hundred students and teachers from 10 school districts also engaged in the program at 13 sites on the Nissequogue River. Four other “Day in the Life” events were held on the Connetquot River and locations within the Peconic Estuary, including the North and South Forks and Shelter Island. In total, more than 2,000 students will participate, guided by 38 partner agencies and 40 schools.

nonprofit organization that sends care packages to troops overseas. After Halloween, the organization sends candy to soldiers overseas. Parent volunteers

helped the students create candy-filled goody bags in the shape of a witch’s broom. They also attached individual notecards to soldiers, thanking them for their service.

The American Heart Association’s 8th annual Healing Heart 5K Run/ Walk will be held on Sunday, November 20th, on the property of the beautiful Pugliese Vineyards in the heart of the Long Island wine country in Cutchogue. Hundreds of runners are expected on this new course through the Vineyard. Day of event registration begins at 8:00 a.m., with the fun run for children 10 and under beginning at 10:00 a.m. and the 3.1 mile off road race beginning at 10:15 a.m. Following the race, the awards ceremony will take place at 11:15 a.m. with awards being given to the top male and female runners along with the top runners in various age categories. A health expo will also be available during the event open to all participants. The Healing Heart 5K hopes to raise awareness that heart disease is the number one killer of men and women across the country and here on Long Island. The event creates a culture of health and physical activity, giving families the opportunity to participate in heart healthy activities together. Adventure in Leadership Hauppauge students who were selected for the Middle School Leadership Advisory program recently participated in an outing to the Long Island Adventure Park in Wyandanch. The Adventure Park is an “aerial forest ropes park” consisting of more than 140 platforms installed in the trees and connected by various configurations of cable, wood and rope to form bridges and zip lines. “The challenging rope courses help empower the students to learn

about cooperation and communication as well as to work on their teambuilding skills,” said Teacher Carol Pacileo. Hauppauge Middle School’s Leadership Advisory program is comprised of 7th and 8th grade students who are recommended and then selected to participate in the program by staff and students for demonstrating strong leadership qualities. “Our leaders have an opportunity to strengthen their leadership skills

while working together as a group by participating in a variety of team building activities such as the Long Island Adventure Park outing,” described Pacileo. “Students then are able to share with other students what they have learned by participating in numerous school and community activities throughout the year, such as Open School Night, Power of One Family Fun Run, Hauppauge Triathlon, and many others.”

Member Artist Showcase Smithtown Township Arts Council is pleased to highlight the talents of its artist members! Member Artist Showcase, which features fine original artwork of sixty-three STAC member artists, will be on view from November 5th through December 18th at the Mills Pond House Gallery, 660 Route 25A, St. James. Exhibiting artists hail from 29 communities across Long Island as well as North Carolina, Florida, Alaska, Connecticut Queens and NYC. A wide variety of styles media is represented including oil, watercolor,

acrylic, glass mosaic, pastel, pencil & ink, and photography. STAC invites the public to an opening reception on Saturday, November 5 from 2-4 pm to meet the exhibiting artists and view their work.
