Golf Invitational Held The Long Island Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence (LICADD) hosted the 37th annual R. Brinkley Smithers Golf Invitational on Tuesday, October 3rd. Participants had their choice of teeing off at Meadow Brook Club in Jericho, NY or Piping Rock Club in Locust Valley, N.Y. “This landmark golf event offers an opportunity to provide hope and healing

For as long as I can remember, I’ve always wanted a “furry” pet of some kind, be it a puppy, kitten, bunny, even a guinea pig. Of course, once I moved into my own apartment and realized that such fuzzy companions require far more attention than I, as a full-time member of the workforce, can provide, I settled for my beloved little Buddy the Betta - and, following his passing, my new baby Betta, Norton von Spudly. Not exactly furry, but still fairly entertaining and interactive as fish go. Perhaps I should mention that, in the apartment complex where I reside, one tends to come across all sorts of creatures, from stray cats and kittens wandering the property, to turtles and fish by the pond, robins and blue jays and other assorted winged folk, and even the occasional baby fox roaming near the dumpster. And squirrels. We can’t forget our bushy-tailed friends who spend the majority of the seasons scurrying from tree to tree in search of acorns to munch on and, once the weather begins to turn chilly, store away for winter. My particular building is fairly set apart from the trees and shrubbery which line some of the other, more shaded areas of the complex; however,

as luck would have it, there happens to be one fairly large tree right in front of my apartment, with branches that - until recently - stretched nearly to my second-floor balcony. Every autumn, like clockwork, I would find hordes of acorns - piles, literally - on my deck each morning. Curious how they all happened to “fall” in this one area, I observed one particular squirrel as he made the rounds from branch to branch, fervently shaking each one until he had dislodged each and every nut. Some would fall down below, where he would eagerly gather them and begin digging holes to store them away; the rest, apparently, seemed to settle among my plants upstairs. Each day, I would sweep the acorns off the side of the deck and, peering over the railing, would see my little fuzzy visitor eagerly waiting to collect them. It became something of a routine, and I was only too happy to help him in his pursuit (and clear off my deck in the process). One morning, I awoke to the sound of buzzing and looked outside to see the landscape company trimming many of the trees and shrubs in the area, including “my” tree. Horrified, I looked at the now nearly-barren branches and wondered what had

become of my little fluffy-tailed companion. Was he swept away with the pile of discarded branches? Had he been permanently displaced from his chosen home? What had become of all the acorns he had yet to gather? Mildly concerned, I wondered if I would ever see him again. A few days passed, with still no sign. The next night, when I returned home from work, I decided to dine outside. It was one of those late Autumn evenings when the air was still mild and the sun had yet to set, casting a golden glow over all that the light touched. As I ate, I was startled by the sound of scurrying, and looked up to see my little fuzzy friend scampering up and down the emaciated tree, picking up the acorns that had fallen and galloping down the pathway to bury them in the tiny hole he had dug. I smiled, glad to see he was alright, despite his slightly-mangled home. Not quite a puppy, but a member of the adopted family nonetheless. A few weeks later, it seemed the acorns had all been accounted for. As I watered my mum plants, I saw something wedged between the flowers. Curious, I peered between the stems to find a single peanut shell. I guess this means he’s moving in for the winter.

Epilepsy Awareness

Over the recent September 9th and 10th weekend, Boy Scouts of Troop 343 (Hauppauge) assisted with Cruizin for a Cure Prostate Awareness Day (held at 1400 Old Country Road in Westbury,), in the 12th annual Cruizin for a Cure’s efforts to promote prostate cancer awareness and offering free PSA testing at the annual event. Since 2012, Troop 343 has been involved with helping at the entrances,

collecting donations, and for the mid-day flag ceremonies at the podium. The scouts assisted with preparations and set ups on Saturday afternoon as well as all day on Sunday at the event at both entrance gates as well as helping with the after-event cleanup. When the Scouts and Adult Leaders were not working, they had the opportunity to walk around and check out the 355+ vehicles from “hot rods” and muscle cars to antique

and classic automobiles and motorcycles. There was also a RC model car race track, a food court, live Doo-Wop music and free PSA Screening courtesy of Winthrop Hospital (where 300+ PSA tests were done). There were 17 Boy Scouts, two Girl Scouts, and 10 volunteer scouting leaders and parents, that donated their time during the day of Cruizin for a Cure Prostate Awareness Day 2017.

The nonprofit was involved in 2008, and in every year consecutively since 2011. “Canstruction Long Island is a remarkable event that uses aweinspiring designs to create structures out of thousands of cans to drive home the fact that there are still thousands in our local communities who are hungry and food insecure,” said Paule T. Pachter, CEO of Long Island Cares, Inc. – The Harry Chapin Food Bank. “On behalf of the staff and volunteers of Long Island Cares, it is an honor to be part of the distribution of the canned food that is generated from

this highly innovative food drive.” Last year, Canstruction Long Island utilized 46,686 pounds of donated canned food, which was given to the beneficiaries, including Long Island Cares, to distribute to emergency feeding programs. Since 2007, Canstruction Long Island has donated more than 380,000 cans of food – the equivalent of 240,000plus meals – and in excess of $35,000 to help feed the hungry on Long Island. Canstruction® is an annual international event. It was started in 1992 in New York City as a way for members of the architectural, engineering, and design and construction (A/E/C) industries to give back to their local communities. It is now held in more than 150 cities worldwide. The local event is produced by the allvolunteer nonprofit Canstruction® Long Island, Inc.

While the dedicated volunteers at SchoolBusiness Partnerships of Long Island, Inc. (SBPLI) are hard at work planning the first ever SBPLI Long Island Regional double header, the Half Hollow Hills High School FIRST® Robotics Competition team is ramping up for its Sixth Annual Half Hollow Hills (HHH) Invitational. This year’s event, the final event of the 2016-2017 FIRST® (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) Long Island season, will take place on Saturday, November 18th, at the district’s west campus. As one of many robotics programs supported by SBPLI, which aims to help immerse schools in the rapidly growing area of STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) education,

the HHH Invitational is designed to showcase the benefits of robotics programs to students, schools, communities and local businesses. During the event, students and coaches from 24 Long Island school districts will participate in an enjoyable and engaging learning environment that enhances problem-solving skills, cooperation and teamwork. Participating teams will compete under the rules and guidelines of the 2017 FIRST Robotics Competition challenge, dubbed FIRST STEAMWORKS™. During the Invitational, which mimics the tournamentstyle competition of the SBPLI Long Island Regional, two 3-team alliances will take to the playing field to complete a variety of tasks to score points and win the

round, with the hopes of eventually advancing to eliminations and finals. Residents, teachers, administrators and business leaders from the surrounding areas are invited to attend and discover first-hand the benefits that FIRST Robotics programs provide to students. This event is also the perfect opportunity for schools and organizations interested in starting a team to meet with SBPLI leaders and speak with participants to gather more information. Following the Invitational, teams will start to prepare for the new season, which kicks-off on January 6th, 2018 at Stony Brook University. Turkey Drive Set Long Island’s largest food drive event, the 9th Annual Bethpage Turkey Drive to benefit Island Harvest Food Bank, will take place on Friday, November 17th, from 7 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. Donations can be dropped off at Bethpage Federal Credit Union’s headquarters located at 899 South Oyster Bay Road in Bethpage. Long Islanders are asked to drop off frozen turkeys, non-perishable food items (except those in glass containers), supermarket gift cards, or cash donations. These donations will go directly to Island Harvest Food Bank, which will then help supply Thanksgiving meals to the more than 300,000 food-insecure Long Islanders through its distribution network of over 550 food pantries, soup kitchens, and other feeding programs on Long Island. “Over the past month, we have seen the great generosity of Long Islanders as thousands helped support people in

need across our country and the Caribbean,” said Linda Armyn, Senior Vice President, Bethpage Federal Credit Union. “There are also many people right here on Long Island who need our help and we hope Long Islanders’ continued generosity to support one another, both near and far, will continue into the holiday season.
