n conjunction with Peace Week 2014, students at Mills Pond Elementary School in the Smithtown Central School District participated in different activities to promote peace. One of the highlights this year was their involvement in a project called “Exchange Peace, One Postcard At A Time.” Every student created a “peaceful” postcard that they will send to a school in Haridwar, India. Thanks to all those who particpated.

the fun filled day. The day kicked off with the 5K Fun Run followed by a scenic 5K Walk through Suffolk County’s Holtsville Ecology Park that featured activities for the entire family along the way. Also, another new feature was a live performance by students enrolled in the All Music’s Rock-nRoll University, including numerous individuals with disabilities receiving services from DDI. The

As part of the Suffolk County Sheriff’s Office Recruit Class Curriculum, all new recruits develop and participate in a community service project. Suffolk County Sheriff Vincent F. DeMarco implemented the service initiative last year to emphasize to new officers the importance
of giving back to their communities. Correction Recruit Class 14-154’s community service project was to collect and donate school supplies to Little Flower Children Services in Wading River, New York. The Class planned and implemented the project as
a group, and also made the decision to choose Little Flower as the recipient. The supplies were delivered to Little Flower on Wednesday, October 8th, the day after they graduated the Suffolk County Sheriff’s Academy.

Harry Stands Alone By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Unfortunately, following last week’s printing, Harvey the Goldfish succumbed to… well, whatever it is carnival goldfish often succumb to, only five days after his “adoption” into my home. He didn’t live to see his name in print, but I’m sure he would appreciate all the condolences received upon his untimely passing. Harry, his fishbowl buddy and hide-and-seek companion, seems to be holding up quite well. Perhaps he had something to do with Harvey’s demise.
Maybe he prefers the solitude. After all, that tree is really only big enough for one average-sized goldfish to hide behind at a time. I contemplated buying Harry a new friend, but I’m a bit hesitant. Rarely has a fish seemed so lively, so content, so vivacious – darting to and fro, bouncing off the sides of the bowl. I half expect to find him lying on the counter one morning, fins up, as a result of diving headfirst over the edge. I suppose I must look gigantic to him, magnified through the bowl, looming
over his tropical sanctuary. And yet there are times when I’m standing at the counter, preparing dinner, and he will come and press his face against the glass, eagerly watching my every move as if to say, What are you making? Is it for me? Can I have some? Please?? And so, once again, as of this writing, Harry is living happily – whatever “happy” is for a goldfish. I’ll leave him on his own for a while, King of the Bowl, and see how it goes. In the meantime, I’ll bring home a copy of my column for him to read.

Essay Contest Winner Hauppauge High School Senior and Class of 2015 Valedictorian Emily Linko won the Mildred E. Smith Historical Essay Competition sponsored by the Smithtown Historical Society. She will be presented with a $1,000 scholarship at the Smithtown Historical Society Heritage Ball on
October 16th. Linko submitted her essay as part of an optional assignment for Ellen Robbins’ AP US History class. She competed against other 11th graders from different districts in the Town of Smithtown. Her featured topic was: What does it mean to be a Smithtowner?

Students from Mr. Yablon’s Living Environments class and the Interact Club, along with teachers Mrs. Buell and Mrs. Valeejo-Gonzalez, were on hand to remove debris washed ashore and/or left behind from beach-goers. This marks the 16th year that Hauppauge High School students and staff members have contributed to the beautification and preservation of Long Island’s precious beaches and waterways.

St. Johnland Nursing Center’s annual Gala honored two-time Hockey Hall of Famer Pat LaFontaine for his leadership in focusing awareness on traumatic brain injuries. Pat enjoyed an illustrious 15-year career before
retiring from the NHL in 1998 as the second highest scoring American-born player in league history. He now serves as the founder and president of the Companions in Courage Foundation. St. Johnland’s Head Injury Rehabilitation Unit

It was a successful homecoming week at Smithtown High School West as the varsity football Bulls advanced their record to 3-2, remaining in the playoff hunt and leaving fans cheering on what was an otherwise chilly late afternoon homecoming celebration on October 11th. HSW hosted West Islip High School, who took an early lead before the Bulls came storming back on two short secondquarter touchdown runs by quarterback Dan Caroussos and running back Garrett Brunsvold. Caroussos later threw a 21-yard touchdown pass to Chris Crespo, finishing with 144 yards passing on the day along with 25

Peaceful Postcards In conjunction with Peace Week 2014, students at Mills Pond Elementary School in the Smithtown Central School District participated in different activities to promote peace. One of the highlights this year was their involvement in a project called “Exchange Peace, One Postcard At A Time.” Every student created a “peaceful” postcard that they will send to a school in Haridwar, India.
Students also participated in a schoolwide “peace walk” around the building, listening to calming music every step of the way. The walk concluded with a special assembly in the gymnasium. Mills Pond students will represent the school at the upcoming Shanti Fund event at the H. Lee Dennison Building in Hauppauge. The event, which invites
students from schools throughout Long Island, is a celebration of peace, highlighted by artwork that promotes peace. Peace Week followed International Peace Day (September 21st), which was established by the United Nations in 1981 to coincide with the opening of the UN General Assembly. It was designed to encourage the creation of practical acts of peace.
Getting Down To Business Business students from both Smithtown High Schools East and West are gearing up for the upcoming Business Olympics, scheduled for November 20th at HSW. Now in its 20th year, the district wide event brings students together with local professionals to develop projects that promote economic development and the local business community
while sharpening students’ business sense. For the event, students will be asked to form teams to prepare presentations that represent their vision for the redevelopment of downtown Smithtown. This includes a marketing plan, print ads and a commercial to invite people to come to the newly revitalized Smithtown downtown area. A kickoff assembly was
recently held at HSE where students had the opportunity to meet with representatives of the Smithtown Chamber of Commerce and Town Planning Board in preparation for the event. Representatives from these and other communitybased businesses and institutions will be among those judging the presentations on November 20th.

This summer, approximately 200 students each at Dogwood and Tackan elementary schools in the Smithtown Central School District participated in the district’s summer reading program. Both schools exceeded

Inaugural Year Celebrated Dignitaries, industry leaders, administrators, educators and students gathered to mark the inaugural year of the Long Island Pathways in Technology Early College High School (LI P-TECH). In an official ceremony held at Farmingdale State College, LI P-TECH’s first graduating class — the Class of 2020 — was celebrated by 60 notables from across Long Island. Offering words of welcome at the start of the ceremony were a number of LI P-TECH’s key partners including Dr. W. Hubert Keen, President
of Farmingdale State College; Dr. Lydia Begley, Associate Superintendent for Educational Services at Nassau BOCES; Rhonda Taylor, Assistant Superintendent of the Uniondale UFSD; Frank Robilotto, Chief Executive Officer of Arkwin Industries; and Christine Lopes, Grants Administrator for the Uniondale UFSD. Long Island P-TECH is an important educational model,” Dr. Begley said in her address. “It is the beginning of a strong pathway to college and careers, and provides
essential opportunities for Long Island students. LI P-TECH’s unique partners work together to help meet regional demands, and to address the state’s concerns for equity of access to college and career readiness. Together, we can literally help these students to build their own futures.” Robin Willner, Director of the Leadership Council for New York State P-TECH and Maura Banta, East Coast Regional Manager for IBM, delivered keynote addresses. “Because of P-TECH,

to design programs that incorporate the use of Timeline, which is a tool they use in Choregraphe,” described Mathematics Teacher Amy Thompson. “The students are rapidly becoming knowledgeable about how to create documents and to share them with me and their classmates as well as how to upload designs from Choregraphe to run on the NAO robots.” These activities promote collaboration among all the children as they learn by doing. “Working together to create and problemsolve, the students develop successful designs that implement the skills they are being taught,” said Ms. Thompson. “If their designs fail (as they often do on the first try), the students go back to the group and make modifications until
they create a successful program. They are learning to be innovative, creative, and most importantly, to be life-long learners.” In addition to robotics, this is an all-digital class. The 6th graders are learning how to use Google Drive to receive teacher notifications, Do Nows and Study Guides all in Google. “They even take their quizzes on Google that I have created for them on Google forms,” described Ms. Thompson. “All of these initiatives are helping students build important technological and problem-solving skills, while simultaneously promoting collaboration, communication and out-of-the box thinking to achieve real-world solutions.”

Hauppauge Middle School has introduced three NAO robots to enhance its technology education and to help engage 6th graders in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) subjects. Stella, Tennessee and Williams are twofoot tall, voice-activated robots with cameras for facial and object recognition, microphones for voice commands, voice synthesizers so they can “talk” and two high-fidelity speakers. Using a program called Choregraphe, the students are learning how to “teach” Stella, Tennessee and Williams to converse, walk in a path, recognize objects and much more. “The 6th graders are using their Common Core mathematics skills

Going Digital Students at Accompsett Middle School are the latest to benefit from new digital media labs being created at schools throughout the Smithtown Central School District. Accompsett library media specialist Donna DeLuca researched and collaborated with other library media specialists in the district to enhance the use of technology at the school. According to AMS Principal Paul McNeil, the lab provides students with an avenue to create alternative projects, cultivating real-world skills and participating in authentic learning opportunities. Essentially, it allows them to become “creators rather than just consumers.” AMS students are using
the digital media lab to produce school news and updates, commercials for clubs, special videos and promos, including a library orientation video and even a piece that includes student testimonials that begin with, “I love the library because…” Students are creating much of their content using the iMovie video editing application. The lab is also equipped with a video camera and green screen. On air personalities from both WALK 97.5 radio station and News 12 Long Island cable news station are scheduled to visit AMS in the near future to witness the students in action and offer their own expertise. McNeil cited the PBS special “Digital Media: New Learners of
the 21st Century,” which documents how digital media in education can be used to “ignite students’ curiosity and ingenuity, help civic engagement, allow them to collaborate with peers worldwide and empower them to direct their own learning.” Across the campus at Accompsett Elementary School, kindergarten students got their first in-school exposure to the digital world. They were introduced to the school’s computer lab, where they began practicing proper hand positioning and usage of the keyboard in preparation for more indepth work that lies ahead, including the middle school digital media lab down the road.
Raising Funds For Cancer Thanks to the support of community and staff members and more than 600 student-athletes, managers and student spectators, Great Hollow Middle School in Nesconset raised more than $2,200 for the American Cancer Society during its third annual Coaches vs. Cancer event on October 9th. Football, field hockey, girls soccer, cross-country, cheerleading and kickline teams all performed
during the event. All of the proceeds were donated in the name of the late GHMS teacher Arthur Miller. “Mr. Miller was a beloved sixth-grade teacher who unexpectedly passed away at the beginning of this school year,” said GHMS Principal John Scomillio. “He was liked and respected by all who knew him. The results of his outstanding teaching and his influence on our students will live on. Mr. Miller’s presence
will be sorely missed.” The ACS Coaches vs. Cancer program empowers coaches, their teams and local communities to make a difference in the fight against cancer by coordinating fundraising events centered on athletes and athletics. Proceeds are used for research and awareness. Since the Coaches vs. Cancer program began, more than $87 million has been raised for this cause.

On Sunday, October 12th, separated by only a mile and an hour in time, two young men took giants steps forward on the road of life and towards their destinies as future pillars of our society. At 1 p.m., Eric Joseph Whitehead became Troop 214’s 107th Eagle Scout at the Smithtown Fire Department Riverfront Property. Approximately one hour later, Brendan Patrick Gillen was honored
by Troop 111 from Nesconset at the Elk Lodge in Smithtown at his Eagle Court of Honor. Both of these young men, who have been involved in scouting since elementary school, have put in countless hours to complete their Eagle projects, a community based project, which is one of the final hurdles in becoming an Eagle Scout. “I am extremely proud of both Brendan and
Eric and the work that they both did in order to become Eagle Scouts,” said Legislator Kennedy. “Becoming an Eagle is an extremely difficult task as only 4% of Boy Scouts go on to becoming Eagles, however I am very proud of the young men in Suffolk County as we have a large number of scouts becoming Eagles right here.”

Seniors Shine More than 150 family members from across Long Island recently gave their beloved seniors the royal treatment during the Association of Generational Experts for Seniors’ (AGES) Fifth Annual “Savvy Senior Day” at Parker Jewish Institute in New Hyde Park, which was hosted by Parker Jewish Institute and AgeWell New York. The year’s celebratory event recognized 30 senior citizens across Nassau and Suffolk for their vast accomplishments and contributions made within their communities, including 74 year-old William Young of Huntington and 92 year-old Lillian Guadagno of Valley Stream, who were crowned 2014 King and Queen, respectively, and were awarded gift certificates for professional studio portraits, courtesy of Bradford Renaissance Portraits. “It is so uplifting to be able to celebrate each year the many extraordinary seniors that not only live within but also actively contribute to our communities,” says AGES Chairperson Kevin Lawrence. “There are so many seniors living on Long Island who remain agile and active on Long Island. AGES’ annual Savvy Senior Day is designed to provide seniors with a special public forum where they can deservingly shine among friends and family. Thanks to its amazing public following and strong participation, Savvy Senior Day has grown since its establishment five years ago and has had the privilege of honoring many wonderful seniors each year.” Young, who was crowned 2014 Savvy Senior King by 2013 King Frank Zizzo, received this honor for his community volunteerism and contributions made to Town of Huntington’s Senior Center and Beach House. Among his other charitable efforts are distributing self-purchased gifts to local churches for children receiving free meals, promoting
hope and encouragement by meeting local soldiers and veterans at Northport VA Hospital by meeting with them and giving them hand-crafted flowers, assisting with citizenship preparation classes at Chinatown Senior Center in Manhattan, NY, and donating his hand-made flowers to fundraisers in support of various causes, including breast cancer. “It means a lot to be named Savvy Senior King,”
says Young. “If I can continue to be involved and make a difference at my age, everyone else can do the same. Savvy Senior Day is a wonderful thing. It’s a great vehicle for giving back to the many seniors who have done and continue to do great things and hopefully inspires others
to stay active within their own communities.” Guadagno was named Savvy Senior Queen for her 20-year activism with Long Island Society of Italian Americans (LISIA), which includes serving as an Executive Board member for the past 12 years. As part of her involvement with LISIA, Guadagno has helped organize day an overnight trips as Recreation Director, served as Chairperson for its Scholarship Committee, and has been committee member for LISIA’s St Joseph’s, Columbus Day and Christmas Dance Celebrations. Among her other charitable contributions are servings as a volunteer with the Valley Stream and Nassau County Auxiliary Police Departments, participating in the American Red Cross’ Widow & Widowers Group after her husband’s passing, and volunteering with AARP Tax Aid. She has also been a social member with the Red Hat Ladies, Catholic Golden Age, Sons of Italy-Celini Lodge and Broadway Theater Group. “I was in total shock when I was announced Queen, it came so unexpected,” explains Ms. Guadagno. “Being crowned ‘Savvy Senior Queen’ among friends and family was so humbling and uplifting. Earning this recognition is a direct reflection on the many activities and experiences I’ve had the privilege of enjoying with so many wonderful people over the past 20 years of my life. It is such a great honor!” Adds Guadagno, “AGES’ Savvy Senior Day provides such an important role within today’s senior community. Not only does it allow seniors the opportunity to be acknowledged for their many accomplishments but it also inspires us as seniors to continue being active contributors and achievers within the communities we live in.”
