Spooky Walk Returns Just in time for Halloween, the Moriches Paquatuck Squaws’ 28th Annual Spooky Walk, will take place at Camp PaQua-Tuck October 21st22nd and 28th-29th, from 7 to 9 p.m. Horror lurks around every corner during this 45-minute-long fright experience, considered the longest-lasting haunted walk on Long Island. Leading thrill-seekers through four campground

buildings and the woods surrounding Kaler’s Pond, this year’s walk is certain be a favorite among the thrill seekers. Upon completion of the Spooky Walk, guests are invited to enjoy hamburgers, hot dogs, roasted corn, hot pretzels, homemade candy apples and more. The NATYCAA Cup program began in 2004 to highlight excellence in two-year athletics based on success in championship competition. Awards are given to the NJCAA member colleges based on performance at national championship events throughout the academic year. More than 3,000 participants are expected at Suffolk County Community College’s Eastern Campus on Sunday, October 23rd, for Making Strides Against Breast Cancer, the American Cancer Society’s (ACS) premier event to raise awareness and funds to fight breast cancer. In conjunction with the event, Suffolk County Community College and ACS have established the Breast Cancer Survivors and Caregivers Scholarship. “We’re coming together to support women battling breast cancer, to remember those who’ve lost the battle, and to push for continued advances in breast cancer diagnosis and treatment,” Suffolk County Community College President Dr. Shaun L. McKay said. “We are proud to host this event for the first time on our Eastern Campus, and look forward to a long and successful relationship with the American Cancer Society and the search for a cure. Carve funny or scary faces into the fruit’s juicy flesh; Hot dogs and apple pie could then complete the bash. “Never mind, I like the haunting atmosphere,” you say. Fine, enjoy it. We can, each of us, have it our own way. As long as we all happily hold hands together in the end And concur that a good time by all of us was spent. Options for Community Living, Inc. recently received a beautiful painting from a program participant and artist named Francisco. A former U.S. Embassy in Columbia employee, Francisco left his family and came to the United States in the 1990s to learn English. Not long after arriving, he “fell in with the wrong crowd” and developed a substance abuse problem. With no real support system, Francisco became depressed and attempted suicide. As a result, he was placed in Pilgrim State Psychiatric Center where he received treatment and began on his road to recovery. Francisco was

determined to start over after leaving Pilgrim and subsequently discovered Options for Community Living. Francisco believes that Options helped change his life, providing him a home and support when he needed it the most. Options helped empower Francisco to rebuild his life and to mend the family relationships that were severed by his substance abuse. “I feel so lucky because there is no better place for me than Options,” Francisco said. His painting was Francisco’s way of showing his gratitude to an organization that he loves very much. “I was honored when I looked up and saw Francisco proudly walking

in our door with his painting; not just because it’s a beautiful piece of art – which it is – but because of the happiness and hope that I saw in his eyes when he presented us with this special gift,” said Yolanda Robano-Gross, Options’ executive director. Francisco’s painting depicts a serene view of a mountain sunset overlooking the water. The painting is proudly displayed in the entry way of the Options’ administrative office for all to admire and also as a reminder of the difference that Options strives to make every day in the lives of the individuals and families that they serve.

back to the community and to those less fortunate. Since that time they have raised more than $4.5 million for Long Island charities. The LIIC has also set up the Camilla G. Belser Memorial Scholarship Fund on behalf of a colleague and friend designed to advance the educational goals of young people in need. There are those who contend that things were far simpler before technology invaded our daily lives and made us dependent upon electronic devices glued to our hands. In some respects, yes, absolutely. But the benefits are not to be so lightly dismissed. Case in point: the recent avalanche of new smartphones which have been released. What’s the difference between one model and the next? Is it worth the money invested? In reality, not much, and no. But as a society, we have been conditioned to want the next big thing, at whatever the cost. It’s become more of a status symbol than a matter of functionality.

For me, the selling point of a smartphone, initially, was to have the ability to text using a full keyboard, rather than one button at a time, letter by tedious letter. I was extremely late to the party, in that respect, having held on to my cherished flip phone for far longer than most in my age bracket. But once I upgraded, there was no going back. Fast forward several years, and my motivation isn’t the slightly larger screen, the slightly longer battery life or a new collection of apps and emojis – it is, quite simply, the camera. My love of photography, while always a passion, has never been complemented by an equally-adequate camera. After reading the reviews of the latest iPhone, it seemed to be a no-brainer to invest

the money into a two-forone deal – a state-of-the-art phone coupled with a camera that earned the praises of numerous professional photographers. And so I took the plunge. And it was worth it. All the downfalls the previous camera had been plagued with, eliminated. Low light, zoom, clarity… now vastly improved upon. It may not seem like much to those who yearn for the simplicity of the days of the rotary phone; but, for me, it is everything. And so I embark on my next photographic pursuit, new phone/camera in hand, embracing the technology which surrounds us. Sometimes, the function does outweigh the downfall after all.

SUMMER READERS - Accompsett Elementary School in the Smithtown Central School District celebrated the accomplishments of its summer readers during a breakfast on September 23rd. To receive an invitation to the breakfast, students had to complete a summer reading project that included reading six books and writing a report for each book. More than 100 students participated in the program and joined together for a breakfast sponsored by the PTA, where they each received a certificate and a prize. Birthday Celebrations Legislator Leslie Kennedy recently joined Senator Kristen Gillibrand to announce the bipartisan Women’s Suffrage Centennial Commission Act (S.3073). This act if passed, will establish a commission that would work across the United States with federal, state, and local governments to educate Americans on the Women’s

Suffrage movement, which took place over onehundred years ago. The Press Conference convened at American Legion Post 155, Senator Gillibrand announced the introduction of this act, and Leslie spoke to thank both her and the women of the past who fought to make women’s suffrage possible. This post is significant

because on display they have a rock that displays the names of local World War I veterans. Lillian DeVere an ardent local Suffragette who oversaw the construction of the Lake Ronkonkoma Library one hundred years ago dedicated this rock in honor of these war heroes many years ago.

A very special birthday celebration was held September 21st in Smithtown. The Smithtown Senior Citizens Department hosted a party for one hundred seniors who reached the age of 90 or better during 2016! The overarching theme of the party was - you are never too old to set another goal or to dream a new dream. According

to Laura Greif, Program Director, “This is one of our most popular events of the year, and we have been celebrating our most senior seniors in this way for over 20 years.” Smithtown Supervisor Patrick Vecchio offered congratulations and presented certificates and flowers to all celebrants. Honored guests enjoyed a delicious lunch catered by

Andersen’s Deli and served by department staff. Staff members entertained everyone with a lively stage show and song medley and in closing, 93 year old Julio Xavier led the audience in a sing along while he accompanied them on the baby grand piano. A wonderful time was had by all!

Kindergartners at Dogwood Elementary School in the Smithtown Central School District brought their stuffed animals to school for a checkup on October 11th as part of an interactive workshop presented by Stony Brook University Hospital. In an effort to dispel some of the fear and apprehension associated with doctors and hospitals, the students learned to

perform proper medical treatments on a “sick” stuffed animal or doll they had brought in from home. After visiting the waiting room, the students worked to diagnose their stuffed companions; first checking their weight and temperature before applying bandages and dispensing proper medicines based on their conditions. The students each performed different job functions, such as

Barbering Teacher James Ricciardo and several graduates from the Eastern Suffolk BOCES Adult Education Barbering Program volunteered their time and provided shaves and haircuts to 69 men at the recent Stand Down for veterans in need at the Northport VA Medical Center. They serviced veterans who served in Desert Storm, Vietnam, and Afghanistan. The original Stand Down was used during the

Vietnam War to provide a safe retreat for units returning from combat operations. Today the purpose of Stand Down is for veterans in need to be afforded the opportunity to receive services in one location. They may enjoy a warm meal, receive items for personal hygiene, get information about medical and dental care, and enjoy the camaraderie of other veterans. Ricciardo said, “We participate in the Stand Down each year because

we want to give back. It is a way for us to serve those individuals who served our country. We hope when we give them a nice clean shave and a haircut, it will make the veterans feel better.” Hayden Sonner a 2015 graduate said, “This is my second year doing this and I think it’s a great way to give back. I’m very thankful for everything the men and women in the military have done to protect us.”

Adult Scouters were also recognized at these special ceremonies. The Bronze Pelican award is a diocesan recognition given to adults who have made a significant and outstanding contribution to the spiritual development of Catholic youth in the Boy Scouts of America. Recipients of the award must be exemplary adults and members in good standing in their respective positions in Scouting and in their faith communities, and have the approval of their pastor(s) before the award is given. The Bronze Pelican is not earned; rather, suitable candidates are sought out

by others and nominated for this award. On October 2nd, 43 Scouts from the Matinecock Scout District, Smithtown area of the Benjamin Tallmadge Scout District, and Ronkonkoma of the Tallmadge Scout District were among the 199 youths from Theodore Roosevelt Council (Nassau County) and the Suffolk County Council Boy Scouts who were presented their Catholic Scout Religious Emblems from the Most Reverend Andrzej Zglejszewski, Auxiliary Bishop of the Diocese of Rockville Centre and Reverend Frank Zero, Diocesan Scouting Chaplain of the Diocese of Rockville Centre in St. Agnes Cathedral (Rockville Centre) during the 59th annual Scout Convocation. After a year’s preparation in earning this award, the Scouts were presented with the Ad Altare Dei (To The Altar of God) Emblem during the ceremonies when the Bishop put the religious medal (which was on a ribbon) around their necks and spoke with each of them and their parents when they were called up for the individual presentations. “This emblem is offered to help to equip

Medal of Valor On the morning of August 4th, 2015, a fast moving thunderstorm moved through the St. James area. The St. James Fire Department was activated for numerous incidents of electrical wires down. At about 5 a.m., a call was received that there were wires burning across from a home on Sunny Road. St. James Firefighter Kevin Peterson, who is also a Suffolk County Fire Marshal, was the first to arrive on the scene. Peterson notified First Assistant Chief Ryan Davis via radio that primary wires were down and fully electrified, and the residence was

EMS personnel and refused any further medical treatment. Had it not been for Firefighter Peterson’s quick actions, the outcome could have been far worse. For his heroic efforts under great personal risk, Firefighter Kevin Peterson was awarded the Vocational Education and Extension Board’s Silver Medal of Valor. The presentation took place at the Suffolk County Medal of Valor ceremony on September 25th, which recognized firefighters from throughout the County for heroic actions.
