ix Scouts and five advisors from Boy Scout Troop 343 of Hauppauge spent the entire day on Saturday, September 28th, in service to their community. They put in seven hours of service time as they assisted in reconditioning the wheelchair-accessible El’s Wampmissick Trail in Manorville. They were able to remediate nearly a quarter-mile of the only wheelchairaccessible hiking trail in Suffolk County. Great job!

On November 16th, the Camp Pa-Qua-Tuck Patrons will be hosting a Casino Night at Camp Pa-Qua-Tuck from 7 to 11 p.m. The event will include access to unlimited gambling, hors d’oeurves, beer, wine and a chance to win amazing prizes. Tickets are $125 per person and $200 per couple. Campers and their parents can purchase tickets at a discounted price of $100 per person and $175 per couple. All proceeds will go to benefit the camp. The hosts of the event, The Camp PaQua-Tuck Patrons, are a newly formed group of volunteers who support the camp and its mission of providing a unique camping experience for special-needs children and young adults. “We are excited to host this very special event,” said Bridget Costello, Director, Camp PaQua-Tuck. “Since their formation, the Camp PaQua-Tuck Patrons have really gone above and beyond in raising funds

and awareness about the camp.” Camp Pa-Qua-Tuck is a resident summer camp serving children and young adults ages 6-21 with both physical and developmental special needs. Its mission is to help these children to achieve equality, dignity, and maximum independence through a safe and quality program of camping, recreation, and education. Throughout the program, campers participate in

many activities, such as arts and crafts, talent shows, cook-outs, swimming and boating. Sponsorship opportunities are available. A Taste Of The Harvest from across the Island will come together under one roof to offer attendees an array of gourmet food and drink. The evening will also feature live and silent auctions with a variety of lavish prizes up for grabs. In addition to the food and fun, Island Harvest will honor two individuals who, through their dedication and service, have made a huge impact on the organization and its mission. Jeff Tempone, CEO of East Coast Refrigeration, will be receiving the “Above and Beyond Award” for his commitment to the fight against hunger, as exemplified by his generous donation of refrigeration units to Island Harvest’s Hauppauge Distribution Center. His contribution has helped Island Harvest store and distribute more fresh and healthy, perishable – foods, including produce, dairy

products and juices. Greta Farrell, a student volunteer, will receive the “Linda Breitstone Award,” named for Island Harvest’s founder and its first president. The prestigious award recognizes an individual whose fervor, determination and hard work have made a positive difference in the lives of others. Greta’s passion for service took hold at a young age. Upon reading a Newsday article highlighting the demand for food, the 11-year-old was shocked to learn that many Long Island families would not be able to enjoy special Thanksgiving dinners. Inspired to take action and make a difference, she wrote a letter to friends and raised enough money to buy at least 100 turkeys… in just two days. Greta is a founding member of Island Harvest’s Student Leadership Council, which

empowers future leaders to increase awareness of issues related to hunger on Long Island. Tickets for the “Taste of the Harvest Celebration” are $295, which will help Island Harvest continue to fight hunger on Long Island. With an assortment of gourmet foods and delightful cocktails, Island Harvest Food Bank’s 20th Annual “Taste of the Harvest Celebration” is sure to be an evening to remember. Island Harvest, Long Island’s largest hunger relief organization, will use the proceeds of this celebration, its premier fundraiser, to provide critical food support to a network of almost 570 food pantries, soup kitchens and other local programs that offer food assistance to the more than 300,000 Long Islanders—over 110,000 of them children—who face hunger each and every day. This year’s gala will be held on Tuesday, October 22nd, at 6 p.m. at the Crest Hollow Country Club in Woodbury, New York. Holiday Celebration & Gala On Saturday, November 2nd, The Long Island Museum will celebrate the 20th anniversary of it’s annual Holiday Celebration Gala & Silent Auction! This yea r the museum will honor Robert A. Isaksen, President, Long Island, Bank of America. The Community Leader award will be presented to Karen Brannen, President & CEO of Jefferson’s Ferry. In addition to his responsibilities as Long Island President, Bob Isaksen is the Senior Credit Products Manager for Bank of America’s Specialized Industries group, covering the Heathcare and Institutions Northeast market. The group banks the majority of the major healthcare providers and not-for-profit institutions from Pennsylvania to Main. Bob also manages

the bank’s national Sports Finance team. He has been with Bank of America since its merger with Fleet Bank and held various positions with Fleet and NatWest. Bank of America has been a long-time supporter of the museum’s annual Colors of Long Island student art exhibition, making Bob’s recognition at the 20th Anniversary Holiday Celebration especially significant. Bob graduated from the State University of New York at Oneonta with a BA in Business Economics. He holds his MBA in Finance from Pace University’s Lubin Graduate School. Bob lives in Setauket, his home town, with his wife and three children. An advocate for positive change to local, state, and federal regulations and laws to benefit

senior citizens, Karen Brannen has helped shape legislative language and testified in support of continuing care retirement communities. “I am honored to be recognized by The Long Island Museum on the occasion of this 20th Anniversary Gala, and I thank the Board and the staff for the distinction -- and happily join in welcoming new Museum Director Neil Watson to Long Island,” said Karen, recipient of the Community Leader Award and President & CEO of Jefferson’s Ferry, the lifecare retirement community. “Jefferson’s Ferry and the Jefferson’s Ferry Foundation are dedicated to enhancing the lives of seniors and that includes availing ourselves of our fine cultural institutions and building relationships

that enrich and sustain all our lives.” Karen began her career in the U.S. Army, and spent two decades within the U.S. Department of Defense. She has a Bachelor of Arts degree in Accounting and a Master’s in Healthcare Administration. She held positions at Walter Reed Army Medical Center and Falcons Landing

CCRC before joining Jefferson’s Ferry in 2000. Karen has received numerous awards for her achievements and is active in several professional and business associations. For the past three years, Jefferson’s Ferry has supported the museum’s Senior Tuesday events, allowing seniors 62 and older to enjoy complimentary

In recognition of National Alzheimer’s Disease Awareness Month, Long Island Hearing is joining the Better Hearing Institute (BHI), a member of the Alzheimer’s Association Early Detection Alliance (AEDA), in urging caregivers to address hearing loss in people with Alzheimer’s and to pay attention to their own hearing health. Long Island Hearing will be raising awareness of Alzheimer’s disease, the importance of early diagnosis, the relationship between Alzheimer’s and hearing loss, and the importance of addressing hearing loss in people with Alzheimer’s.

“There are many families within our community coping with Alzheimer’s and the challenges it presents,” says William Kent, Director of Long Island Hearing. “At Long Island Hearing we want to help ensure that the hearing health of those in our community with Alzheimer’s is appropriately managed. Hearing loss, when left unaddressed, can compound the difficulties that people with Alzheimer’s and their families already face. But in many cases, the appropriate use of hearing aids can benefit people with Alzheimer’s.” There is strong evidence that hearing impairment contributes

to the progression of cognitive dysfunction in older adults. Unmanaged hearing loss can interrupt the cognitive processing of spoken language and sound, regardless of other coexisting conditions. But when an individual has both Alzheimer’s and hearing loss, many of the symptoms of hearing loss can interact with those common to Alzheimer’s, making the disease more difficult than it might be if the hearing loss had been addressed. Studies have shown that although a significantly higher percentage of people with Alzheimer’s disease may have hearing loss than

their normally aging peers, they are much less likely to receive attention for their hearing needs. “A comprehensive hearing assessment should be part of any Alzheimer’s diagnosis and any hearing loss should be addressed,” says Kent. “By addressing the hearing loss, we can help improve quality-oflife for those who have Alzheimer’s and help them live as fully as possible.” Numerous studies have linked untreated hearing loss to a wide range of physical and emotional conditions, including impaired memory and ability to learn new tasks, reduced alertness, increased

risk to personal safety, irritability, negativism, anger, fatigue, tension, stress, depression, and diminished psychological and overall health. Long Island Hearing is urging caregivers of people with Alzheimer’s to also address their own hearing health - recognizing the negative impact that untreated hearing loss can have on their own quality of life and emotional well-being. Zombie Run Set On November 2nd, participants will run for their lives to escape the zombie apocalypse at Brady Park in Massapequa Park to benefit Special Olympics New York! The rUNDEAD is a 5K run, in which runners start off with a flag belt and three flags representing their lifelines. Through the years, he designed for a vast collection of women, including the likes of Julie Andrews, Marlo Thomas, Sophia Loren, Barbara Walters, Marissa Tomei and several of the Miss Americas. In 1976, he accomplished the “hat trick” of being the simultaneous designer-of-choice for Miss America 1976, First Lady Betty Ford and American Ambassador Ann Armstrong, helping to crown him with his most-cherished title of Bicentennial Designer of the Year for 1976. For a man whose designs now qualify as “vintage” on E-bay; for someone who used to regularly mingle with all walks of stars, he comes away from the whole experience with one sentiment that stands above the rest: “Ego doesn’t work.” As a result, Mr. Capraro

finds himself equally comfortable designing costumes for a Hicksville High School theatre production – which he has done several times – as he did while living the lavish life of limousines, champagne, starstudded galas and black-tie affairs ... all words which are still “music to (his) ears.” The man who was originally inspired to design by Princess Grace’s wedding gown and who recently donated the original mannequin and about twenty of his designs worn by the First Lady to the Gerald R. Ford Presidential Museum in Grand Rapids, Michigan, now lives by the simplest of mottos: “Pursue and persist ... Love what you’re doing.” What a lovely person. What outstanding accomplishments. And to think it began all those years ago in the halls of Lindy High School. His is a story that deserves to be shared. And admired by all.

On a recent Saturday, the SJB Crew Team competed at the Brickyard 5000. The day started out like any other, with the first few races running smoothly. As the day wore on, the wind picked up and the already rough Hudson River turned into a series of veritable tsunamis. My race, the Varsity Eight, the last heat of the day, was running right on time. The course had been shortened, and I was to compete head to head with my little brother. As we paddled out, I knew I could not let him win for the sake of bragging rights. We knew the water was rough, but we also knew we were ready. As we spun the boat and got underway, the crack of the oars hitting

the water signaled the start of our very brief rivalry. In that moment, I wanted nothing more than to beat my brother. After the first few hundred meters, we were ahead and gaining, but after a few minutes, that all changed. As we slightly altered our course, a huge wave crashed over our port side, flooding the boat. We were still afloat, but the added water weight made every stroke less productive. With every stroke, my brother’s boat was gaining and we were taking on more water. Coming into the final two hundred meters, we were still in the lead, but barely. It was close, but we had them by about a boat length. Then, our Cox had us suddenly stop rowing.

From the back of the boat, I couldn’t make out what she was saying. One by one, I saw the boys in front of me jump out of the boat and into the Hudson. Panicked, I jumped out too. Our boat had sunk, and we were floating in the middle of one of the roughest waters in New York. As we watched my brother swiftly finish, we realized that we had lost. Sure, it was on mere luck, but he was the one toting the Gold Medal. Embarrassed, we boarded the Haverstraw Fire Department’s boat. I had lost, to my brother no less. Even though I was sad we didn’t finish, I was happy at least one of the Cianciulli boys was bringing home the gold for SJB Crew.

On Thursday, October 10th, The Rotary Club of Smithtown-Sunrise guest speaker was Andrew J. Rapiejko, Associate Hydrogeologist, Department of Health Services, Division of Environmental Quality, Bureau of Water Resource Management. Andrew’s presentation was on The Challenges of Protecting Suffolk County’s Drinking Water Supply. Mentioned were the types of wells we have in Suffolk County, over 700 public supply wells, and 210 non-community wells. Some of the sources of pollution to our water supply come from our agriculture such as pesticides and nitrates, and industry such as solvents and degreasers. Although Suffolk County Department of Health Services data does indicate an increase in detections of contaminants in our groundwater and surface water over the past 17 years, our public drinking water supply is routinely tested and treated to ensure that it meets all drinking water standards. People relying on private wells as their drinking water source should have their water tested, as private wells are vulnerable to contamination and it is up to the individual to have their wells tested. Since all of Suffolk’s water supply comes from groundwater it is extremely vulnerable to contamination. Although regulations are in place that help protect this resource, we must be vigilant in preventing pollution from entering our groundwater. It is also important to maintain our ability to investigate and monitor for pol-

Greenbelt Cleanup Six Scouts and five advisors from Boy Scout Troop 343 of Hauppauge spent the entire day on Saturday, September 28th, in service to the community. They put in seven hours of service time as they assisted in reconditioning the wheelchair accessible El’s Wampmissick Trail

in Manorville. Fresh from their trail building experience at the Philmont Scout Ranch in New Mexico this past summer, the scouts and their volunteer scouting leaders joined volunteers from the Long Island Greenbelt Trail Conference. They were able to remediate nearly a

quarter-mile of the only wheelchair accessible hiking trail in Suffolk County. Suffolk County Parks Commissioner Greg Dawson was on hand to personally thank all the volunteers for the great work on this and other Suffolk County trails.
