This year’s Over 50 Fair had a successful run on September 28th at the Melville Marriott. Fair Director Barbara Kaplan said she has received many positive comments from both attendees and exhibitors. The Fair had 90 exhibitors and 30 classes covering a variety of disciplines, all designed to help those over age 50 live their lives to the fullest. Approximately 1,500 walkers helped raise money at Jones Beach State Park last weekend during Long Island’s Sixth Annual Brain Aneurysm Awareness Walk, hosted by the Brain Aneurysm Center of the North Shore-LIJ Health System’s Cushing Neuroscience Institute (CNI), along with the Brain Aneurysm Foundation (BAF).
The money will benefit North Shore-LIJ’s Brain Aneurysm Center and the Brain Aneurysm Foundation (BAF), supporting essential research that may directly benefit those affected and help to reduce the incidence of ruptured aneurysms. Brain aneurysm survivors, their families and friends attended the fun-

GAMER GATE The malpractice of “journalists” on prominent gaming journalism websites such as Kotaku and RockPaperShotgun was first examined under a critical lens when an independent developer named Zoe Quinn was exposed. She had cheated on her boyfriend, now her ex-boyfriend, and he had written a blog about what had transpired, intriguingly titled: “The Zoe Post.” In this blog, Eron, Zoe’s ex, documented a list of reasons and events leading to the break up, which spurred reaction from the community when it was revealed that she was having intimate relationships with people who wrote articles for gaming news websites, namely, those who wrote positive reviews and articles for Zoe’s game, “Depression Quest,” a text-based adventure game which was not well-received by the community.

As the corruption began to come to light, leading to public outcry, it was quickly censored and oppressed all across the internet. As people became more enraged, due to the fact that their right to freedom of speech was being taken away by anonymous hands, members of the community invested in the industry who felt as though it was wrong to condone corruption, started digging. More tidbits of corruption were unearthed, exposing financial and intimate relationships between writers and their sources, the developers. However, this was not before journalists responded to the community’s irritation over the lack of ethics among these journalists. These journalists defended Zoe, taking cover behind unrelated societal issues, such as misogyny and hostility towards feminists. Each week, the
journalists became more smug, making more outlandish claims while laying back, believing that everyone was powerless and that there would be no reprimand for the extremely unethical things they had done. These outlandish claims stated things such as, “The gaming industry is dying,” as well as a comparison of gamers to the terrorist organization, ISIS. These protests have gone on for weeks, indicating hope for the cause - and that cause is justice. Professional journalists know that the things they have carried out and the way they have handled public response is extremely wrong. These writers have betrayed our trust; but more importantly, their duty. People must know of the injustice that befalls the fifth estate so that it may be corrected. Awareness is crucial to fighting relentless corruption.

Fishy Friends By: Jamie Lynn Ryan I recently adopted two pet goldfish. And by adopted, I mean spent $5 on 30 chances to win one at a carnival, and spent 17¢ on the other at a local pet store. Add to that the expense of a fishbowl, pretty neon-colored gravel, a fun plant for the two of them to dart behind whenever I’m within a 5 mile radius, the all-important goldfish food which they don’t appear to even notice floating overhead, and a scrubbing brush and net for the weekly cleaning process and maintenance. All that, with the hope that these two finned friends
will make it through the week, maybe even a month or two. My record so far is one whole year, upon which milestone my beta fish promptly croaked. I suppose the birthday celebration was too much for him. So far, as of this writing, five days and going strong. Not bad. Of course, I realize goldfish aren’t the most sociable of pets to have, but these two – whom I named Harvey and Harry – are beyond standoffish. I turn the light on, they swim away; I sprinkle a few food flakes in their bowl, they’re nowhere to be found. I walk away, turn the light out and – viola – there they are, faces pressed against the glass.
I have visions of the conversation that must go on between them when I’m not in the room: When is the human coming back? Why does she bother us? Did you eat today? I wish we had more trees to hide behind. Yes, I know – it’s silly. But they are home alone together all day; there must be some form of socialization between them, no? At any rate, I can feel satisfied that I rescued two goldfish, one from the madness of the carnival setting, the other from the schools of fellow fish in the aquarium. Even if they do prefer to cram themselves into a corner by themselves.

The marathon and half marathon are part of County’s new ‘Healthy Suffolk’ campaign – a region-wide initiative designed to encourage and assist residents live healthy and active lives. “The Suffolk County marathon is a mechanism to highlight the incredible communities, natural resources and businesses we have here in Suffolk County,” said County Executive Steve Bellone. “Suffolk County is a world renowned destination. From the Hamptons to our wine country to our amazing downtowns and world class beaches, we are a destination for tourism, businesses, recreation, and living. Our marathon will give us an opportunity to showcase all of that.” The County Executive will participate in Suffolk County’s inaugural marathon and in addition will be running the New York City marathon this
year in support of the Hope for the Warriors Foundation. The marathon has a distinctly planned route that was designed to showcase and drive tourism towards downtowns along the Great South Bay. The race, which is a Boston Marathon qualifier, will begin and end at Heckscher State Park in East Islip with a Taste of Long Island wine and food festival to end race festivities. Suffolk County has partnered with New York State for race coordination and planning. “We are proud to work alongside Suffolk County to make certain the inaugural marathon is a success,” said Wayne Horsely, Long Island Director of New York State Parks & Recreation. “This really is a great opportunity to highlight the beautiful Heckscher State Park and we look forward to welcoming the thousands of race participants and supporters.” “The marathon will give the County the opportunity to shine a spotlight on our vibrant downtowns and give our local businesses a well needed boost,” said Deputy Presiding Officer, DuWayne Gregory. “We encourage all residents to cheer on the participants in the many spectator viewing parties that will line the marathon route.” County Executive Bellone also introduced
the County’s new ‘Healthy Suffolk’ campaign, which encourages residents to Live Well, Be Active and Eat Smart. The campaign is to remind the public that healthy living is different for each individual, but is designed to help keep health and wellness on the forefront of people’s minds. Healthy Suffolk will also increase access and raise awareness of County public health efforts. Yan Baczkowski, president of the Long Island Visitors and Convention Bureau, added “this type of event will increase tourism to Suffolk’s beautiful downtowns and is exactly what we need to ensure our local economy continues to grow.” Through sponsorship and entry fees, the marathon is designed to not only be cost neutral but profits are expected. All profits will be donated to local Suffolk County veteran organizations. In addition, the marathon will have a special veteran’s race category. “We are proud County Executive Bellone continues to find creative ways to support local veterans,” said Tom Ronayne, Suffolk County Director of Veteran Services. “We are looking forward to working with race organizers so that our veteran population has all the information they need to know for this event.” “This marathon route
is well-thought out and the running community is looking forward to a great race,” said Brendan Barrett of Sayville Running Company. “We thank the County Executive for launching this event and will support the race in any way we can.” Suffolk County’s Department of Economic Development studied the per capita revenue generated per race participant of other well-known marathon events and as a result Suffolk County Marathon to generate $7.9 million (based on 4,000 participants). The course will start at the entrance to Heckscher State Park, go north to Montauk Highway and head east. It will loop through St. John’s University and past the historic Bourne Mansion before continuing along to downtown Patchogue. After looping around downtown Patchogue, the runners will return to Heckscher State Park via Montauk Highway. There will be designated cheering sections in Oakdale, Sayville, Bayport, Blue Point, and Patchogue with live music and entertainment. Walk & Wheel On Sunday, October 5th more than 600 friends, participants and supporters came together for the fifth annual United Cerebral Palsy Association of Greater Suffolk Inc. (UCP of Suffolk) 5K Walk & Wheel at Belmont Lake State Park to support adult and children with disabilities. The noncompetitive event raised over $90,000. The funds raised will support the programs and services of UCP of Suffolk which provides to almost 3,500 individuals with disabilities each year. “We hold a walk and wheel instead of a race
because we want to include all of our program participants, friends, family and employees in promoting life without limits for people with disabilities,” Stephen H. Friedman, UCP of Suffolk President and CEO said. “We are so pleased with how much this event has grown. We started with about 100 people and now over 600 people support our event.” “I liked the walk because I was with all of my friends and it raised money for a good cause which is UCP of Suffolk,” Participant Michelle said. Parents have been asking their children to “turn down that music” for generations. “You’ll ruin your hearing!” messages were mostly ignored. Currently, earbuds are included with almost every purchase of a cell phone, and the increased risk of hearing loss from pumping high decibel music into our ears has greatly increased.
Music students in Mark Burr and Michael Abrescia’s seventh grade classes learned how to protect themselves from hearing loss. They watched a video released by Etymotic Research, Inc., and then entered the company’s “Generation Hear” contest. The contest sought to raise awareness of how to
“hear for a lifetime” and the possible damage that may be caused by harmful listening habits. The classes earned national recognition for Commack Middle School, receiving an honorable mention in the contest. Both classes were awarded free high fidelity ear plugs from the company.
National Merit Semifinalists Three academically talented Commack High School seniors earned the rank of Semifinalists in the National Merit Scholarship Program. Scott Massa, Amanda Weiss, and Chantel Yang will compete for one of the $2,500 scholarships awarded in the spring to National Merit Finalists. Semifinalists are chosen based on the scores
they received on the 2013 Preliminary SAT/ National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/ NMSQT), taken in 11th grade. The nationwide pool of Semifinalists represent less than on percent of all U.S. high school seniors. Each candidate then must submit a detailed scholarship application that includes his/her academic

record, school and community participation/ volunteer information, demonstrated leadership roles, employment, and honors/awards received. Candidates must also be endorsed by a high school official, submit an essay, and earn high SAT scores. National Merit Scholarship winners will be announced beginning in April, 2015.

Showing Gratitude Smithtown resident Ryan Cavanagh showed his gratitude for the exceptional care given to his two year-old daughter, Riley, by presenting a $2,300 donation to The Good Samaritan Hospital Foundation. Proceeds will benefit Good Samaritan’s Child Life Program. Every year Mr. Cavanagh, an elementary school teacher in Smithtown, hosts a tennis fundraiser for needy families at the
Westhampton beach club, LaRonde, where he also works part-time as a tennis instructor. Proceeds from this year’s event will fund additional toys and supplies for the child life playroom in the pediatric unit at Good Samaritan. The playroom is a safe haven where children, guided by child life specialists, engage in a variety of therapeutic activities which help them better cope with a hospital
experience. “My family and I felt loved and cared for by every member of the staff during my daughter’s five day stay,” said Mr. Cavanagh. “The child life specialists left a lasting impact on our lives. Breakfast Set The Long Island Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence will hold its 25th Annual Peter Sweisgood Breakfast on Sunday, November 16th, from 10 a.m. until 1 p.m. at the IBEW Local 25 in Hauppauge. This year’s honorees include Community Champion and Keynote Speaker Linda Mangano. Linda is responsible for promoting the use of NARCAN (naloxone) to help emergency personnel and families prevent an overdose.
LICADD will also honor Treatment Champion Gerry Roucoulet, MDIV, CASAC, MAC, SAP and Media Champion Jim Condron, Senior Vice President Regional Strategy for Connoisseur Media at this year’s event. Mr. Roucoulet had served LICADD and the larger addiction community for many years as a clinician and intervention specialist, where his fine work continues today. Mr. Condron has been instrumental in putting LICADD’s message on the
radio waves by recruiting music celebrities to talk about Long Island’s opiate crisis and raise public awareness of this pressing issue. The event will also feature speakers from within the recovery community, as well as raffle prizes and a silent auction to support LICADD’s lifesaving services. “We are thrilled to present these three outstanding Long Islanders with our Champion Awards,” said LICADD’s Director of Philanthropy, Cynthia Doerler. “This
award is a gesture of LICADD’s appreciation for the great strides these Champions have made to battle the opiate crisis and to make our communities safer,” she added. Hercules On The Harbor On Sunday, October 26th, at 9:30 a.m. thousands of Long Islanders will take “steps” toward eradicating breast cancer during the 21st Annual Walk For Beauty In A Beautiful Place. This year will also mark the inaugural Hercules on the Harbor 10K run through the very hilly North Shore communities of Stony Brook and the Village of Head of the Harbor that organizers contend is possibly the toughest on Long Island. The USA Track & Field sanctioned event will transverse a very challenging on and offroad course starting and finishing in front of Stony Brook’s famous Hercules

Participants will be provided spectacular views of the beautiful village green, the scenic marina and harbor, the charming residential community, the stunning Harmony Vineyards, and the picturesque Stony Brook Mill Pond, while passing such local historical landmarks as West Meadow Beach’s Gamecock Cottage, the colonialera Hawkins Homestead and Stony Brook Grist Mill. More than a mile of the course will include a trek off-road through the remarkable Avalon Park & Preserve along one of its wooded trails and over grassy paths that loop
around the east and west flower fields. The course will offer both novice and seasoned runners memorable moments that will keep them returning year after year. The atmosphere will be festive with balloons, bands and camaraderie in connection with the Walk for Beauty event that, since its inception, has raised over $1,250,000 for cancer research at Stony Brook Medicine. Proceeds are also used to support the Ward Melville Heritage Organization’s Unique Boutique for prostheses and wigs, benefitting those battling cancer. More than ten local musical acts will help keep the energy high by
performing at various spots along the course. Rock Bands, string quartets, acoustic guitar players, jazz trios and other musical entertainment will motivate the runners and create a unique experience for participants and spectators alike. This will be fun! Advanced registration is now open for both the walk and 10K run at $25 and $35, respectively. Weekend Hours During the month of October, the Long Island Game Farm will only be open on weekends. The Game Farm will operate on the following dates: October 18th-19th and 25th-26th. In addition to seeing the animals, Game Farm visitors can also take part in a special event during the month of October: a “Meet The Pirate and Princess Party” and costume contest, which will take place on October 25th (rain date is October 26th).
