Blank Page By: Jamie Lynn Ryan The bane of every writer’s existence. That infinite white space stretching before you, silently mocking its would-be-author’s lack of inspiration. And yet, there is always that potential that the following few keystrokes just might be the beginning of the next great American novel. Or not. Perhaps another day, on another page… I have always been one of those writers who wakes up with a thought, the makings of an entire essay, in fact, and then helplessly allows it to fade into the

oblivion of that dreamlike state in which we often begin our day. And, just like that, it’s gone, a mere trace of a concept that could have been. If only I had the good sense to jot down these fleeting thoughts. Instead, I sit here blank, staring at aforementioned blank page, feeling a sort of camaraderie with it. What shall we accomplish today? Do I sense a metaphor here, a comparison to each brand new day we are afforded, that 24hour stretch of limitless possibilities for adventure and accomplishment? Too easy. And yet, clearly not

simple enough for the average individual to take advantage of, yet another peculiarity of mankind. So many opportunities … so many fresh starts… so many blank pages…. Who’s to say when the moment will be seized, a la Dead Poets Society’s “carpe diem” mantra? Well, that’s a simple enough question. You. You are to say. I am to say. We are to say. The next time you are presented with a blank page, grab a pen and start writing. Or at least have the good sense to keep a notepad handy when you wake up.

Excellent event!” The INN (Interfaith Nutrition Network), a local non-profit that helps Long Island’s needy, raised over $400 and 117 pounds of food. The Over 50 Fair was proudly sponsored by Country Foot Care, Long Island Family Caregiver Coalition, and LongIsland.com Barbara’s other large event for children and their families, the All Kids Fair, will return on April 10 to the Melville Marriott.

The Over 50 Fair once again had a successful run on September 27th at the Melville Marriott. The Fair had 90 exhibitors and 30 classes, some taught by local and national celebrities, covering a variety of disciplines, all designed to help those over age 50 live their lives to the fullest. The annual event is the largest “over 50” expo on Long Island, and it once again had new features for its attendees. “Every year, our single guests request a way to meet other singles. This year, 7 in Heaven Singles Events facilitated this interaction in our new Singles Lounge, which had a seating area and opportunities to meet other singles,” explained East Hills resident Barbara Kaplan, the Over 50 Fair director. Chef Jonathan of Fox TV’s hit show MasterChef Season 6 and Chef AJ of Fox TV’s MasterChef Junior Season 3 did cooking demonstrations as well as “meet and greets.” Several beauty queens were in attendance, including the newly crowned Ms. New York Senior America 2015, CJ Marie. Edith Jason, age 80, one of the oldest yoga teachers on Long Island, taught a yoga class. Comedians Mark Brier and Howard Newman entertained at separate performances. In addition, there were a group psychic reading, reiki class, iPad tips, saving for retirement, travel, and health topics such as sleep apnea, cardiology, and podiatry. This event has been building a loyal following among the Boomer Generation during the six years of its existence due to its consistent presentation of a variety of classes and products they find appealing. Suffolk County Community College Equestrian Team rider Brittany Diez of East Islip successfully clears a fence during a recent show. Diez won her over-fences class and helped Suffolk clinch its first blue ribbon of the season. The Suffolk County Community College

Equestrian Team, only in its second year, now boasts 25 riders, finished fifth out of 10 teams last year and is the only junior college in the region to have a team. The team was recently honored as the President College for the region that includes Stony Brook University, St. Josephs College, Dowling, LIU

Post, New York University, Columbia University, Hofstra University, Adelphi and Molloy. Suffolk’s next show will be on October 11 at the Olde Towne Equestrian Center in Selden. Suffolk will also be hosting the regional finals in March 2016.

Student Spotlight

THE UNIVERSITY OF MIAMI: SCHOOL OF MY DREAMS BY: JORDAN CIANCIULLI, SENIOR, ISLIP HIGH SCHOOL

As a high school senior, there is no issue more relevant to me than picking a college. Over the past few years, I’ve wrestled with the idea of choosing the right school for me. After watching my brother make his decision, and then regret it during his freshman year, I’ve realized that this is a very important choice. My brother eventually transferred to the University of Miami, and hasn’t stopped talking about it since. He loves it, and after visiting, I fell in love too. The campus is beautiful, the academic reputation is unmatched and the Toppel Career Center is an invaluable resource which I hope to take advantage of.

I can see myself at The U. This is why I tried really hard to make myself stand out as an applicant. Zachary Goldman, the Assistant Director of Admissions, was happy to answer my questions about applying, and calm my anxiety. He informed us that, even though my grades and standardized test scores are pretty competitive, the holistic admissions process puts an emphasis on the applicant as a whole. With any luck, I’ll be able to put this advice to good use. After touring many competitive schools and narrowing my options, the University of Miami kept floating to the top of the

pile. I plan on touring the University of Miami again this weekend, just to further my desired transition into a Miami Hurricane. I’ve picked my institution of higher education, and now I can only hope that they pick me. I’m excited about the possibility of spending the next two years alongside my brother at one of the best colleges in the country, and I’m really looking forward to spending the next four years at my dream school. My past has shaped me in to the person I am today, but the University of Miami will make me the man I hope to become in the future.

Try-Days & Art After Dark This fall, the Art League of Island has combined two popular events into one, the recently introduced Friday TRY-DAYS with a long-running favorite evening event called Art After Dark. For several years now, Art After Dark has provided a fun evening of visual arts and socializing in the Art League’s spacious Elizabeth S. Livingston art center. Visitors can get a good look at the exhibit in the Jeanie Tengelsen Gallery, or go to the art studios to see “pop-up” exhibits by local artists, view art demonstrations by Art League Instructors, and enjoy live music. Anyone can come in and enjoy the evening since Art After Dark is free and open to the general public. Friday TRY-DAYS were introduced in the spring to give people a chance to “test the waters” and try out a workshop in the course of a three-hour evening. Prices are nominal at $35 per person, $30 if one RSVP’s in advance. Workshop participants get to take home a finished work of art at the end of the evening and all materials are included. This fall, visitors to the center get the best of both worlds, with free art demonstrations beginning

at 6:30 p.m. and TRY-DAY workshops beginning at 7:00 p.m. Visitors can spend a few hours taking in the gallery exhibit, popup exhibits, viewing the free art demonstrations, and enjoying live music or maybe even open-mic poetry readings. Or, visitors can mingle and view a demo before heading to a workshop. Those who enjoy the free demo can come back the following month and take the threehour workshop at the next TRY-DAY/Art After Dark. The next TRY-DAY/Art After Dark on November 13th will feature live art demonstrations by Anu Annam (Watercolor), David Peikon (Oil Painting), and Suzanne Young (Charcoal/ Pastel Painting). They will be presenting their workshops at the December 11th event in addition to Dana Neger Lagos’ Jewelry workshop. Pink Chair Luncheon Far from the average breast cancer foundation, Pink Aid’s mission is to help local underserved women survive treatment on both a financial and emotional level. Its goals are made possible through fundraisers such as its forthcoming Second Annual Pink Chair Luncheon and Fashion Show, which pays special attention to “local breast cancer warriors.” This unique event, which last year raised more than $225,000 from its 300 attendees in support of several local community grants, is being held at Mitchells|Marshs in Huntington on Thursday, October 15th at 11:30 a.m. The heart and soul of the Pink Chair fundraiser is the “Celebration of Life/ Warrior Fashion Show” featuring 17 brave Long Island women who have

battled through treatment of the disease. In addition to taking to the stage in the latest Mitchells|Marshs fall fashions alongside their biggest supporters, these survivors share inspirational messages regarding their journeys. This year’s guest speaker is New York’s own Marisa Acocella Marchetto, a breast cancer survivor and award-winning cartoonist and graphic novelist whose work has appeared inThe New Yorker; The New York Times; Glamour and O, The Oprah Magazine. She recently released the graphic novel Ann Tenna and her previous Cancer Vixen novel was named one of Time magazine’s top ten graphic memoirs and was a finalist for the National Cartoonists Society “Graphic Novel of the Year.” She is also the founder and chair of the

Marisa Acocella Marchetto Foundation at Mount Sinai Beth Israel Comprehensive Cancer Center and the Dubin Breast Center at Mount Sinai. Hauppauge School District is pleased to welcome Caitlin Classey as a new special education teacher at Forest Brook Elementary School. She

previously was a special education teacher at P.S. 155 William Paca in Manhattan, New York and also served as a teaching assistant at

Pines Elementary School, among others teaching positions. Classey received a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Child Study and Speech Communications and a Masters of Arts degree in Literacy/Cognition from St. Joseph’s College in Patchogue, New York. She holds professional certifications in Literacy, Birth to Grade 6; Early Childhood Education, Birth to Grade 2; Childhood Education, Grades 1 to 6; Students with Disabilities, Birth to Grade 2; and Students with Disabilities, Grades 1 to 6. Classey is a resident of Smithtown, New York.

Despite the wet, windy weather, the Smithtown High School East community came out in full force to celebrate homecoming 2015. Starting at St. James Elementary School, members of the High School East cheerleaders, Whisperettes, DECA, robotics club, band, homecoming court, administrators and Whisper the Bull paraded down Lake Avenue and onto the Smithtown HS East track to greet fans in the grandstands. The week leading up to the big event featured numerous opportunities for individuals to let their school pride shine, as students and staff members participated in theme spirit

days and attended a pep rally. Members of the homecoming court were cheered on as they rode in vehicles along the parade route. This year’s nominees for homecoming king were Christian Demarzo, Liam Waring, Kevin Keese, Graham Cono and Kevin Nguyen. Competing for homecoming queen were Antonina DeStefano, Laura Burns, Gina Figliozzi, Johanna McElroy, Jacquelyn Keegan and Victoria Joscelyn. Following the parade, the varsity football team took to the field against Walter G. O’Connell Copiague High School. With no points on the scoreboard for either team in the first and second

quarters, Copiague scored the first touchdown halfway through the third quarter. HSE answered back right away, scoring its first touchdown of the game. With the score tied 8-8 at the end of the fourth quarter, the game went in to overtime, and despite their best effort, the Bulls were defeated by a final score of 14-8. The halftime show was led by the 16-time awardwinning kickline team, the Whisperettes. Following their performance, the up and coming younger Whisperettes took the field to show off what they learned at a recent clinic held by the varsity team. Kevin Keese and Victoria Joscelyn were crowned king and queen.
