The Firemen’s Association of the State of New York (FASNY) is clanging the alarm with the message, “Don’t wait – check the date!” - the 2016 theme of the annual Fire Prevention Week, October 9th through 15th promoting the importance of replacing smoke alarms every 10 years. “Functioning smoke alarms reduce by half the risk of dying in a home fire, so it is extremely important to make sure they’re working properly”, said FASNY President Kenneth Pienkowski. President Pienkowski noted that families utilizing a 10-year-life smoke alarm in the home can remove a potentially high-danger component of human error from the reliability of alarms. Statistics show that three out of five U.S. home fire deaths occur in homes with no smoke alarms or no working alarms. Homes with battery-disabled smoke alarms or alarms that have outlasted their full functionality put people at increased risk in

Signs. They’re everywhere. You need only to look, and take notice. A visit from a butterfly to commemorate a birthday… the timely appearance of a nest of robin’s eggs… a rainbow arching over the sky… There are those who simply appreciate these occurrences as a token of nature at its finest and leave it at that. And then there are those who see it as representative of something far deeper, and more spiritual in nature. Sure, anything can be made to “fit,” if you are so inclined; but there are certain phenomena, if you will, that simply cannot be denied and leave you shaking your head in wonderment. Case in point: I recently found myself driving on Sunrise Highway, as I often

do, when I happened to focus in on the license plate of the vehicle in front of me. It read “RIP PAL.” For those who may not know, I recently lost my grandfather – my “Pal” – as I fondly called him, earlier this year. The odds of that particular combination of letters, traveling in front of me at that particular time, leading up to what would have been his 90th birthday this month… it was pretty mind blowing at the time. As soon as I was stationary, I quickly texted my mom to tell her about my encounter, still incredulous at the coincidence. No sooner did I get out of the car to head in to pick up dinner, when I was met with another “sign.” As I stood on line waiting to be helped, my eyes fell on the nametag of the girl behind the counter, one I had noticed there countless times

before. It read “Ventura” … my grandfather’s last name. Whether it was her first name, last name, I wasn’t certain. But it didn’t matter. What are the odds? Maybe it was just a coincidence. Two, in fact. Within the space of about five minutes. Both having to do with my grandpa. Perhaps just a stroke of luck. But, to me, it was a sign. Of what, exactly, I don’t know. But these subtle reminders of those who have passed on are around us always, if we only choose to pay attention to them. And I do, always. They say signs come to those who believe in them, those who are open to accept them for what they are – whether it provides a moment of comfort or brings to mind a happy memory. the event of a home fire. Beginning January 1st, 2017 in New York State, the sale of smokedetecting devices powered by removable, replaceable batteries will be prohibited. Instead, retailers will be able to sell only smokedetecting devices with a power source that isn’t removable and lasts at least a decade. Increased availability of extended-life batteries and new tamperresistant smoke detectors is expected to help individuals and families better protect themselves and their loved ones. Existing devices already in homes will be allowed to remain there until they stop functioning, and smoke detectors with replaceable batteries will continue to be on sale in the state throughout 2016. New York State law requires that all homes and businesses must have working smoke detectors. Smoke detectors with a 10-year lifespan are already on the market; most are powered by lithium

Feastival Raises Funds than $1.4 million has been raised by the Golf Feastival to support the camp since its inaugural event in 1969. This year’s Feastival featured 152 golfers at the golf tournament, many of whom golfed together in teams. The consequent cocktail hour, buffet-style Italian dinner, tournament awards, raffle and silent auction was attended by 180 guests.

Take Heart With Tea An apple a day may keep the doctor away, but a recent study found drinking tea might keep the cardiologist at bay.

The USDA reported that men and women who drank black tea for three weeks reduced their total and bad

cholesterol (LDL) levels by an average of 7.5 percent. Researchers concluded that drinking tea may reduce the

risk of coronary heart disease. Antioxidants called flavonoids, found in both green and black teas, are thought to

be potent weapons in the fight against heart disease. That news may be especially important

for women, given that heart disease kills more women than all forms of cancer combined including breast cancer.

Star Island Yacht Club & Marina has rescheduled its 7th annual Striped Bass Tournament in anticipation of Hurricane Matthew, which yesterday made landfall in Haiti as a Category 4 storm with maximum sustained winds of 145 miles per hour. Determined to be the most powerful storm in the Atlantic since 2007, Matthew’s potential impact on the United States is still being evaluated. In an effort to protect its anglers from any potential dangers at sea, Star Island Yacht Club & Marina has rescheduled the Seventh Annual Striped Bass Tournament. The Captain’s Meeting will now be held

Special Connection Thanks to the help of a former teacher, Smithtown Central School District recently donated gently used soccer uniforms and soccer balls to the Hope Children’s Home in Kenya. Larry Hohler, who taught social studies in the Smithtown Central School District from 1966 to 1999, delivered the donations to the orphanage to which he

has a special connection. While teaching in Smithtown, Hohler received a sabbatical to travel and teach in East Africa. He stayed in touch with one of his former students, Joseph Kirima, who now serves as director of Hope Children’s Home. When the AIDs pandemic hit in the 1990s, many children lost their parents

and were forced to live on the streets. Hohler and Kirima helped fundraise in the U.S. and Africa and opened the Hope Children’s Home in 2005. Since then, 90 children have been provided with housing and other goods thanks to generous donors such as Smithtown Central School District. HEROS FOR HEROES - On Sunday, September 25th, Congressman Lee Zeldin attended an event hosted by the NYC PBA honoring Panico’s Butcher Shop and Deli for “Heros 4 Heroes,” a non-profit organization that donates heros to America’s heroes. History of New York NEW SIGN PRESENTED - The Kings Park Heritage Museum has a new sign, which will be hung on the Ralph Osgood Intermediate School that is home to the museum and its acquisitions. The museum’s mission is to preserve the town’s history and educate the public about it. Although the museum is under the supervision of the Kings Park School District Office, it does not receive any funding from the school district. It is supported through private donations and grants.

Sweetbriar Nature Center

Twenty-nine Hauppauge High School International Baccalaureate (IB) students recently visited the New York Historical Society in Manhattan home to a museum about the history of New York as well as the Kingenstein Library that houses tens of thousands of newspapers, manuscripts, maps, pamphlets and letters. In preparation for their National History Day research projects, the IB History Paper One exam and the Extended Essay,

Hauppauge’s IB juniors and seniors learn how to use contextual information to decode documents and artifacts from an Historical Society educator. “The students had the opportunity to see how artifacts are used by historians to draw conclusions,” noted IB Teacher Anne Stebbins. “I think this allowed them to realize that when you are doing historical research, the questions you ask sometimes can be more important than the

answers you find.” The IB students also greatly enjoyed viewing and interpreting art from the museum’s collection as well as exploring the newly unveiled “Battle of Brooklyn” exhibit. The visit culminated with a viewing of the Historical Society’s film, “New York Story,” that chronicles New York’s dynamic history from a remote outpost on the edge of the known world to the cultural and financial center of the globe.

St. James Elementary School in the Smithtown Central School District hosted motivational speaker, author and Smithtown Central School District graduate Jon Gordon on September 29th. The school is integrating his book, “The Energy Bus for Kids,” into its character education

program. The message behind the book is about getting your team on the bus, moving in the right direction with a shared vision, focus and purpose. There are five different motivating factors to staying on the energy bus, Gordon said. “You are all the drivers of the bus. You need to have a positive

vision for the future. You need to fuel your ride with positive energy, love your passengers and enjoy the ride,” he told the students. In addition, St. James Elementary School is using “The Energy Bus for Kids” as the framework for its school song this year.
