Coastal Cleanup Held

pproximately 50 Hauppauge High School students donated their time to the annual Coastal Cleanup at Robert Moses State Park. Students from Jeffrey Yablon’s Living Environments classes and the High School’s Interact Club, along with teachers Heidy Valeejo-Gonzalez and Alyssa DePinto, were on hand to remove debris washed ashore and/or left behind from beach-goers. “Please help. I’m alone and scared. I don’t know where I am or how long I have. I never meant for this to happen. All I wanted was to hang out with my friends at a party. None of this was supposed to happen... Help.” Chapter 1 “Hey guys! I got this invitation to a ghost party... get your best white bed sheet out and get your party on!” I said to my friends over the phone. Emma responded “nice” and laughed. Joseph responded, “Got my sheet out and ready!” Alison responded with a laugh. Jonathan responded with, “Sure, if there is candy corn, I’ll be there!” and laughed. Ian responded, “Where is this party? And yes, definitely coming, just

wanna know!” “Ummm...it is on Maple Street...no definite address. We will find it. Gotta be the one with a bunch of cars, lights and music,” I said. They all responded with ok. “Meet me at my house in ten,” I said. Alison said, “Scare ya later,” and we all hung up to get ready. I didn’t want to wear a bed sheet because it seemed too old-fashioned so I put on an all-white outfit, black makeup on my eyes and half red, half black lipstick and some white shoes. My friends all arrived around the same time. We all said hello, got a quick snack before we left, got into my car and left for the party. Chapter 2 It didn’t take long to find the house the party was being

hosted at. We stepped in and were greeted by our host, Jackson. Jackson didn’t seem as normal as the rest. It was a pretty normal party - singing, dancing, eating, talking. But then something happened that changed all that. Jackson came up running toward us in what seemed like fear. After he ran past us, the lights started flickering. At first, we thought it was a joke. Everyone looked around for light switches and soon found out that the lights were fake lights that were put up as decorations for the party, and didn’t even have real light bulbs to light it up. At that time, everyone started to panic. Then a voice came out of nowhere. And then he came. And then IT came.

Eleven year-old animal educator and journalist Victoria Bonavita recently interviewed Dr. Jane Goodall to discuss her new book Seeds of Hope. Dr. Goodall also shared stories about her life’s work as the world’s leading primatologist, and her youth program Roots and Shoots. Dr. Goodall is credited with redefining the relationship between humans and animals. Her 55-year study of chimpanzees is the longest study of any animal in history. Jane Goodall’s Roots & Shoots, which Jane started with a group of Tanzania students in 1991, is today the Institute’s global environmental and humanitarian youth program for young people from preschool through university with nearly 150,000 members in more than 130 countries. She is also a Messenger of Peace for the United Nations. September 21st was recently celebrated as the International Day of Peace. Dr. Goodall spoke at the United Nations to offer a message of hope for the future - “to achieve global peace, we must not only stop fighting each other, but also stop destroying the natural world.” In 1960, anthropologist Louis Leakey sent Jane Goodall, a 26 year-old native of England with no college degree or scientific experience, went to Africa with a mission: learn everything she could about wild chimpanzees. Leakey hoped that information on chimpanzees would shed light on human’s evolutionary past. But for Goodall, studying the chimpanzees just to learn more about them was reward enough. Dr. Goodall’s early early discovery of chimpanzee tool making and tool using forever changed things in the scientific world. When she first saw a chimp that she named David Greybeard, and then his companion, Goliath, not only use grass stems as tools, but sometimes

pick leafy twigs and modify them by carefully stripping off the leaves before they could use it as a tool, qualifed the behavior as primitive tool-making. This discovery startled the scientific community. At that time, humans were defined as “Man the tool-maker.” When she told Louis Leakey (by telegram), he said we would have to redefine “Man,” redefine “tool” or accept chimpanzees as human! The fact that they sometimes hunt and eat small mammals, such as baby monkeys or bushbuck, or baby birds, was also very surprising to scientists.

In July 1960, Jane Goodall began her landmark study of chimpanzee behavior in what is now Tanzania. Her work at Gombe Stream would become the foundation of future primatological research and redefine the relationship between humans and animals. In 1977, Dr. Goodall established the Jane Goodall Institute, which continues the Gombe research and is a global leader in the effort to protect chimpanzees and their habitats. The Institute is widely recognized for innovative, community-centered conservation and

Special Interview Opportunity development programs in Africa, and Jane Goodall’s Roots & Shoots, the global environmental and humanitarian youth program. Dr. Goodall travels an average 300 days per year, speaking about the threats facing chimpanzees, other environmental crises, and her reasons for hope that humankind will solve the problems it has imposed on the earth. Victoria also discussed with Dr. Goodall (the world’s leading authority on chimpanzees), her opinion of the recent court case involving two chimps named Herculues and Leo that have been held at Stony Brook University for scientific research. Dr. Goodall supports the efforts to have the chimps released saying, “what the lawyers are doing is great.” However, her own personal push is to have people learn to treat animals the right way from their own heart and not because some law tells them they have to. Dr. Goodall’s honors include the French Legion of Honor, the Medal of Tanzania, and Japan’s prestigious Kyoto Prize. In 2002, Dr. Goodall was appointed to serve as a United Nations Messenger of Peace and in 2003, she was named a Dame of the British Empire. And she was just awarded the 27th Catalunya International Award for her contribution to humankind. When asked about her greatest hope for the future, she told Victoria that “all over the world there will be young people in Roots and Shoots - therefore they will be living in peace and harmony with each other and with nature.” For more information about Dr. Goodall and the work of the Jane Goodall Institute, please visit www. janegoodall.org.

There are few things as unpredictable, and beyond our control, as Mother Nature. If the past few years have taught us anything, it’s that hurricane season is not to be taken lightly. Gone are the days of “what are the odds” and “it’s never happened here” … turns out, “not always in your favor” and “now it has” are the answers to such rhetorical musings. Of course, most forecasts are still met with a healthy dose of skepticism, even in these parts of the region where that kind of cynicism resulted in some pretty substantial regrets not so long ago. Meteorologists’ predictions, coupled with dueling “models” mapping

out the potential track of various storm systems does not an exact science make. As a result, the tendency is to ignore such warnings until the eleventh hour and simply hope for the best. The same goes for blizzards, heat advisories … any natural occurrence that might interfere with our daily lives. How dare something as trivial as weather affect our schedules. Until it does. And we are completely unprepared. I will fully admit that I am guilty of such dismissiveness as well. To me, unless I look outside and see it for myself, it’s not reliable information. I don’t see the point in inciting mass hysteria among the public based on a “hunch,” a “chance of” whatever. Show me rain and

The Long Island Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence (LICADD) received a $5,265 donation from 115 friends and family members in memory of Daniel Grym, 19 of Bellmore, who passed away from the effects of a heroin and benzodiazepine overdose on January 8th, 2015. Daniel’s older brother and only sibling, Kenny, passed away 5 years ago on the same date from a heroin overdose. On Saturday, in honor of 350th anniversary of Smithtown, the Sesquarcentennial Parade marched down Main Street starting at 11:30 a.m. Legislator Leslie Kennedy, having been a life time resident of Smithtown marched in the parade with her husband Comptroller John Kennedy. Not only did they participate in the parade but they did so with full gusto, donning fashion from Smithtown’s past. “It was an honor to be able to march in this historic parade, Smithtown

has been my whole life and I am so proud of its rich and extensive history.” said Leslie Kennedy. Smithtown’s history is long and surrounded by much mythology. The story goes that Richard Smith made a deal with the natives that would grant him all the land he could encircle in one day while riding on a bull, according to legend Richard Smith was able to ride around what is now the current border of Smithtown. Though this story’s veracity is questioned,

Raising Funds for Responders

The Hauppauge School District united on Saturday, September 26th with the goal of collectively walking 911 miles in the First Annual Patriots Month Walk to benefit the Feal Good Foundation. This inaugural charity walk was organized by Hauppauge High School Seniors Craig Bottner and Teressa Mercurio as part of their International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Program Creativity, Action, Service (CAS) project requirement. Doreen Gordon, director of Social Studies and Business served as the students’ adviser, and

Assistant Principal Joy Ferrara provided technical support. While the Patriots Month Walk fell short of it 911mile goal, approximately 50 participants walked more than 1,000 laps around the Hauppauge High School track to raise approximately $2,000 for the Nesconset-based Feal Good Foundation, which assists first responders who are struggling with illnesses related to 9/11. “It’s very important to continue to help these people,” described Mercurio. While Bottner and Mercurio were only

toddlers on September 11th, 2001, they learned about 9/11 from the news, their classes and through personal stories – all of which led them to partner with John Feal, the founder and president of the Feal Good Foundation for their community service project requirement. “I hope these first steps cause a chain reaction that will lead to something far beyond the original idea,” stated Bottner. “And I hope support for this event will continue to grow and unite our community the way 9/11 united America.”

School-Business Partnerships of Long Island, Inc. (SBPLI), in conjunction with FIRST® (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology), proudly recognizes former FIRST team 358 member Andrew Opacke as the 2015 winner of SBPLI’s Fred Breithut Scholarship. Awarded annually to a recent high school graduate and SBPLI FIRST team member entering Farmingdale State College the SBPLI

Fred Breithut Scholarship is provided for a maximum of four years, in the amount of $1,000 per semester. Mr. Opacke joined the FIRST Robotics team during his freshman year of Hauppauge High School. Although he joined the team to have fun, the work he did with the team gave him experience in the engineering field and has influenced his future career aspirations. He recently began studying mechanical engineering at SUNY Farmingdale and hopes to return to his high school as a FIRST robotics team mentor. “Being a FIRST team member has taught me the skills to face roadblocks without quitting, to work on a team of conflicting opinions and ideas, the value of hard work and, most importantly, to lead and motivate other

students,” says Mr. Opacke. “Thank you to everyone at SBPLI for recognizing my dedication to the field. The Fred Breithut Scholarship will be very helpful in the cost of my education and I look forward to continuing my relationship with SBPLI through the unique opportunity of becoming a FIRST mentor.” After accepting the award, Mr. Opacke also discovered his family’s personal connection to the scholarship - Mr. Breithut was his grandparents’ social studies teacher in junior high and high school in Franklin Square. Mr. Breithut, who taught history and held administrative posts with numerous high school districts on Long Island, operated SBPLI for 25 years as its President and Founder.

Student-Artist Recognized Smithtown High School East senior Joshua Bisso is one of 27 artists across Long Island to have his work selected in the ninthannual Embracing Our Differences Long Island art exhibit. Last May, Smithtown High School East art teacher Dianne Shanian challenged her Computer

Art class to complete a visual entry for the contest, which is hosted by the Suffolk Center on the Holocaust, Diversity & Human Understanding. Joshua’s winning piece, which was created in Photoshop, will be displayed in the Village of Patchogue from October 28th through November

8th in front of South Ocean Avenue Middle School. Embracing Our Differences is a meaningful effort to build a community that values peaceful coexistence and cultural understanding. It is open to students, professionals and amateurs of all ages across Long Island.

Smithtown High School West turned their homecoming celebration into a day the whole town would remember, as it coincided with the town’s 350th year celebration. The week leading up to the big event featured numerous opportunities for individuals to let their West side pride shine, as students and staff members participated in theme spirit days and attended a pep rally. The parade down Main Street kicked off homecoming weekend for the broader community and featured members of each of the classes, various clubs and sports

teams. Members of the homecoming court received cheers from the crowd as they rode in decorated vehicles along the parade route. This year’s nominees for homecoming king were Michael Alfano, Ryan Chapman, Michael Fandozzi, Jose Mapa and Michael Randazzo. Vying for the title of homecoming queen were Gabriella Carucci, Noor Chaudhry, Gabrielle Hidalgo, Natalia Lynch and Nicole Smith. Following the parade, the varsity football team took to the field against Centereach High School, both of whom carried a 2-0 record going into the game. West took the lead

Outstanding Scout Project early on, scoring 20 points in the first quarter and 21 points in the second quarter. Centereach answered with three touchdowns later in the game but the Smithtown Bulls maintained a strong lead over the Cougars and captured a 48-28 victory. The spectacular half time show included performances by the schools award-winning kick line and cheerleading teams. Additionally, varsity football team captain Michael Alfano and recently recognized scholar-artist Gabriella Carucci were crowned king and queen.

Two recent scout projects have been completed to benefit the residents at St. Johnland Nursing Center in Kings Park. CJ McKay, a member of Boy Scout Troop #74 (Coram, NY), chose to complete his Eagle Scout Project at St. Johnland Nursing Center. The project must be completed to achieve the rank of Life Scout. Mr. McKay chose to build wheelchair accessible cedar gardening boxes for residents and Day Care participants at St. Johnland. Mr. McKay had to gain approval from his Scout Master Committee Chair and the Council Supervisor of the Long Island Boy Scout Council. After approval, he had to seek donations and publicize his work. Mr. McKay received donations from many local businesses to complete his project. From start to installation, Mr. McKay finished

building 6 cedar gardening boxes in 4 months. Mr. McKay is a senior at Newfield High School. He has been actively involved in Boy Scouts for over 12 years. He hopes to attend Stony Brook University next year, majoring in Engineering Sydney Surgue, a member of Girl Scout Troop #1273 (Suffolk County), chose St. Johnland Nursing Center as the focus of her Girl Scout Silver Award Project. The Silver Award Project demonstrates leadership, organization and dedication to the local community and must be completed for a Girl Scout Cadette to advance to a Senior Girl Scout. Ms. Sugrue chose to plant a beautiful garden for the Alzheimer’s residents in the Kipp Pavillion at St. Johnland. As with the Eagle Scout Project, Ms. Sugrue had to gain approval from the Long Island Girl Scout Council before beginning,

seek donations and publicize her project. She also received donations from many local businesses and held book sales at her church to raise funds to complete her work. Ms. Sugrue is a freshman at Kings Park High School. She participates in cheerleading and plays on the high school softball team. She has been actively involved in Girl Scouts for over 10 years. Karen Vittoria, Director of Rehabilitation at St. Johnland, states, “The beautiful horticultural projects that were recently completed provide physical and psychosocial benefits to our residents. They will help maintain the array of plants and flowers while incorporating functional tasks such as endurance, safety awareness, balancing abilities and environmental awareness as they care for the gardens.”

At its September 29th meeting, the Kings Park School District Board of Education voted unanimously in support of a capital project bond resolution that will go to the community for vote. The Board has authorized a vote date of Tuesday, Dec. 8, 2015. If approved by voters, a maximum of $41,442,515 may be borrowed over a period of 15-20 years. The proposed capital project bond referendum will address the need for repairs and renovations, safety and security upgrades, athletic updates and curricular issues to meet the demands of the district’s more rigorous curriculum. If voters approve the proposed project, all six buildings within the district would see building improvements, including roof replacements, bathroom renovations, and door and hardware replacements, as well as asphalt and pavement upgrades, as necessary. Plans also call for auditorium upgrades, gymnasium renovations, and the creation of a

multipurpose athletic field and accompanying concession stand/comfort station at Kings Park High School. Additional high school renovations include upgrading the library to provide for 21stcentury student research and learning needs, and resurfacing and upgrading the high school track. The full listing of projects can be found on the district’s website, www.kpcsd.k12. ny.us. “We have spent several months reviewing the needs of the district and are excited to officially present this plan to the voters of our community,” said Board of Education President Pam DeFord. “Our Facilities Committee has worked diligently and collaboratively at making sure our district continues to meet the growing needs of our children and community. This has been a community effort to ensure our district can continue providing for the educational needs of our children in a safe, secure environment.” The total anticipated

cost of the project is $41,422,514. Of this amount, 62.1 percent of allowable building expenses will be funded through New York State building aid. For the average assessed home in the district, the project will cost taxpayers an estimated $153 per year. “This bond project will ensure the structural integrity of our buildings for years to come, as well as raise the level of pride in our school district,” Superintendent of Schools Dr. Timothy Eagen said. “Our students deserve better, and this project is about rebuilding Kings Park pride.” On December 8th, community residents will have the opportunity to vote on the proposal. The vote will be held from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. at the Kings Park High School Back Gym. Students from Jeffrey Yablon’s Living Environments classes and the High School’s Interact Club, along with teachers Heidy Valeejo-Gonzalez and Alyssa DePinto, were on hand to remove debris washed ashore and/or left behind from beach-goers. This marks the 17th year that Hauppauge High School students and staff members have contributed to the beautification and preservation of Long Island’s precious beaches and waterways.

Two Weeks Left to File Two weeks remain for National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) insurance policyholders to submit their Hurricane Sandy Claims for review by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). The last day to submit claims is Thursday, October 15th, 2015. NFIP-certified insurance adjusters are currently reviewing more than 15,000 Sandy flood claims, looking for any instance of underpayment. Where warranted by the review, additional payments are being made to policyholders who suffered losses from the storm.

“If you believe your Sandy flood claim was underpaid for any reason, we are ready, willing and able to take another look. But we can’t review your claim unless you ask us to,” said Roy Wright, FEMA’s Deputy Associate Administrator for Insurance and Mitigation. Getting started is as simple as making a telephone call. Policyholders can contact the NFIP’s Hurricane Sandy claims center at 866.337.4262 from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Eastern Daylight Time (EDT), Monday through Friday, to request a review.

To be eligible for the review, policyholders must have experienced flood damage between October 27th, 2012 and November 6th, 2012 as a result of Hurricane Sandy and must have had an active NFIP flood policy at the time of the loss. When policyholders call, it is helpful if they have available as much information as possible, including the name on the policy, the address of the damaged property and the ten-digit NFIP policy number that was in effect at the time of the loss. Policyholders will be asked a series of questions to

determine whether they qualify for the review. If qualified, they will be called by an adjuster to begin the review. The timing of this call may be affected by the volume of requests. Most reviews can generally be concluded within 90 days. Policyholders also can go online to www.fema. gov/hurricane-sandynfip-claims to download a form requesting a review. The downloaded form can be filled out and emailed to FEMAsandyclaimsreview@ fema.dhs.gov or faxed to 202.646.7970 to begin the review process. For individuals who are deaf,

hard of hearing, or have a speech disability and use 711 or VRS, please call 866.337.4262. For individuals using a TTY, please call 800.462.7585 to begin the review process. The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development recently announced that flood insurance proceeds up to $20,000 resulting from the Sandy Claims Review process will not be treated as duplicative, and will not be recouped by HUD or its grantees. To date, approximately three out of four NFIP claimants in the review process

have received that level of additional compensation from FEMA and will not face any possible repayment of HUD-funded grants. The Sandy Claims Review is intended to be simple for the policyholder and does not require paid legal assistance. Several nonprofit service providers are ready to offer free advice and answer questions policyholders may have.
