Pirates & Princesses In honor of the end of its season - and the long Columbus Day Weekend, the Long Island Game Farm - Wildlife Park & Children’s Zoo is hosting its second annual Pirates and Princesses Treasure Hunt Sunday, October 9th, from 12 to 2 p.m. During the event, children will be treated to a scavenger hunt around the park, which will culminate in a bounty of snacks and prizes and a

meet-and-greet with the Long Island Game Farm’s own pirate and princess. All children will receive a pirate map with clues to specially marked destinations around the park. Upon solving each clue, participants should visit that location and have their special treasure map stamped by one of our zookeepers or Long Island Game Farm staff. Once a participant earns

five stamps, they should journey along to the place where X marks the spot in order to claim their prize as well as cookie and juice treats. Though guests are encouraged to wear outfits inspired by the event (be it a princess-style ball gown, a prince-style suit or your favorite pirate attire), costumes are not required to participate. required to enter the park, there is no additional cost to join the event. “The Pirates and Princesses Treasure Hunt was the perfect ending to our season last year,” says Melinda Novak, Vice P r e s i d e n t / C o - O w n e r, Long Island Game Farm Wildlife Park & Children’s Zoo. “Though we will continue to be open for a few more days post-event, we are looking forward to hosting all buccaneers and having them celebrate the end of 2016 with us! It’s a great way for families to spend an afternoon.” The Long Island Game Farm features interactive animal experiences, where guests can get up-close and personal with their favorite animals. New to the Game Farm this year was the Giraffe Encounter, where guests hand-fed the park’s resident giraffe, Clifford, and learned fun facts from the staff. In addition to Clifford, guests once again had the chance to hand-feed the LIGF’s camels, which this year feature a new addition and naming contest, and bottle-feed goats and other baby animals in the nursery. The Long Island Game Farm – Wildlife Park & Children’s Zoo is open through October 12th, after which time it will close for the season. The park will reopen in May 2017. Twenty-four U.S. military veterans at Gurwin Jewish Nursing & Rehabilitation Center were literally blanketed with love by two local Girl Scout Cadettes working on their Silver Award. Best friends Miranda Rago and Eviana Holmes of Troop 590 dedicated their “Take Action” service project to the aging soldiers, quilting patriotic patchworks to warm the veterans residing at the Center. According to Rago, the inspiration for their service project came as a result of her volunteer work at Gurwin. “My

mother has worked at Gurwin for 27 years,” said Rago. “I participated in the Center’s teen volunteer camp this year, and found out that Gurwin has a lot of residents who are veterans. We decided that this would be the perfect group to present our quilts to.” The 14 year-old sewing novices were taught the skill by a troop leader specifically for the project, stitching two dozen lap blankets from squares of denim cut from donated jeans by family and friends. The Cadettes decorated each blanket with American flags and

other symbols, as well as messages of gratitude for the veterans’ service. Resident Jerome Greenberg, a U.S. Army Air Force veteran, was very touched by the gift. “It was so nice of them to honor me,” he said. “It’s beautiful.” Thanking them for their thoughtfulness, Dawn Lettau, CTRS, Director of Therapeutic Recreation at the Gurwin Center, said, “These Cadettes have touched the hearts of our veterans, many of who served during World War II, Vietnam or in Korea. Reaching out to remember our veterans with their beautiful handmade gifts has touched the hearts of both our residents and staff. We are grateful that they chose to honor our courageous veterans in such a unique way.” The Silver Award is the highest honor a Cadette can earn before moving on to become a Girl Scout Senior as a freshman in High School. Both girls are from Selden and attend Newfield High School.

At the end of the first half, the Bulls kept their momentum, staying on top 17-0. As the homecoming crowd of students and alumni cheered them on, East shut down the Riverhead Blue Waves, 24-0.

During halftime, Smithtown High School East varsity cheerleaders kicked off the show, followed by a performance by the 17-time National Champion High School East Whisperettes. The homecoming court nominees were announced and called on to the football field where Gabby Meyers and Kyle DiPietrantonio were named homecoming queen and king.

Bringing Home the Gold

Eleven residents at Gurwin Jewish Nursing & Rehabilitation Center participated in the Suffolk County Golden Games held recently at the Patchogue YMCA. Competing in modified sporting events against eight other nursing homes across Suffolk County, Gurwin residents - aged 62 to 90 - brought home the gold in volleyball, bowling and women’s distance throw. Gurwin residents have competed in the annual sports competition since its inception in 1989, when they were started by Karen Nash, CTRS, former director of Therapeutic Recreation at Gurwin. The multi-sport event kicks-off with an Olympicstyle opening ceremony,

complete with torch bearers and salute to the American flag, followed by a day-long schedule of various sporting events. The Games challenge seniors residing at nursing home facilities to develop their physical and socialization skills in a healthy, lighthearted and friendly competitive environment. “The Golden Games are rich in the spirit of camaraderie, friendship and fun,” says Dawn Lettau, CTRS, Gurwin’s Director of Therapeutic Recreation. “Our residents practice for months prior to the Games, honing their athletic skills and developing friendships among their teammates. These annual games enable former athletes to maintain

their lifelong interests and relive their glory days; for others, it is an opportunity to develop new skills and work towards a common goal. Our residents take pride in doing their personal best and working together as a team.” Gurwin resident Patricia Davidson, a perennial medal winner at the Games and this year’s recipient of the gold medal for women’s distance throw, proudly displays her collection of medals in her room at Gurwin. “I look forward to the Golden Games each year,” she said. “I enjoy practicing for the events and always try to perform at my best. It is an exciting day for all of us, and bringing home a medal is the icing on the cake!”

Scout Leader Training On Wednesday evening, September 14th, over 70 Scout leaders and volunteers gathered at Hauppauge High School for a two-hour seminar on becoming an Eagle Scout Coach. The training was provided by the Matinecock District, Suffolk County Council, Boy Scouts of America. It was led by Matinecock District Advancement Chair David Hunt and Past Chair Herb McGrail, who have a combined 30 years experience in coaching Boy Scouts to attain the Eagle Scout Rank. Participants were led

through Eagle Scout Service Project, a community service project that takes an average of 9 to 12 months for an Eagle Scout candidate to complete. Eagle Scout Coach is now an official adult position in the Boy Scouts of America. “Last year, 90 Scouts achieved Eagle Scout Rank in the Matinecock District,” explained Mr. Hunt, “and our objective is to increase that number every year. The service projects that they provide not only benefit our communities, but they are also a springboard for providing

leadership experience to our young men, and giving them confidence in their leadership abilities.” Plans are to offer this training seminar twice a year, so the next one will be early next year. The date has not yet been set. Suffolk County Council, Boy Scouts of America, serves over 12,000 youth, boys and girls, and is powered by over 2,000 adult volunteers. IMPORTANT LESSONS - Forest Brooks students in grades K-5 recently learned important lessons about fire safety when Fireman Greg Gottlieb and other members of the Hauppauge Fire Department recently visited the school. In addition to having an opportunity to see a fire truck “up close and personal,” the students received coloring books and posters to participate in the Hauppauge Fire Department’s annual fire safety contest.

Outreach Support On Saturday, October 8th at Jones Beach, Outreach and the John Brower, Jr. Foundation will host the 2nd annual 5K Walk to raise funds and awareness about substance and alcohol abuse in New York, bringing the community together while walking for a cause. The event honors the memory of John Brower, Jr., who died in 2014 of an opiate overdose at age 25. Proceeds from the walk will support Outreach, a non-profit organization dedicated to helping teens and adults fight drug and alcohol addiction. The Brower family formed the John Brower, Jr. Foundation to heighten awareness about substance abuse and to help raise funds to end the drug epidemic that has had an adverse effect on Long Island. After being introduced to Outreach shortly after their son’s passing, the Browers

were impressed by the organization’s dedication to help those struggling with addiction. They decided to target all the group’s fundraising for the agency. To date, the Brower family has donated more than $37,000 to Outreach. “The Brower family is one of too many Long Island families who have experienced the heartbreak of opiate addiction,” said Kathleen Riddle, president of Outreach. “We join the Browers in their mission to do all we can to raise awareness for teens and young adults so additional families do not have to lose a loved one to substance abuse. The Brower family has been tremendously generous and devoted to the cause. We are enormously thankful for their support.” “It’s been more than two years since we lost our son,” said John Brower, Sr., “but his memory is with us every day as is our

determination to continue fighting addiction. During the first weekend of fall, the weather became crisper, but the need for lifesaving blood is no less now than it was in the summer. Over the years the American Heart Association Long Island Board & Heart Saver Awards Dinner has grown into something that not only thanks people from our Long Island community but continues to inspire everyone involved to continue to do what we do each day. Wednesday, September 21st was no exception. “Our Long Island Board installation dinner features the induction of new Long Island Board members which this year include: Dr. Benjamin R. Cohen, Neurosurgeon, Dr. Rajiv Jauhar, Cardiologist at Northwell Health, On Friday, September 23rd, Suffolk County Legislator Sarah Anker and Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone, in partnership with the Stony Brook Trauma Center, hosted the first Suffolk County Senior Health and Wellness Expo. The event was a part of Senior Center Month and National Falls Prevention Awareness Day. It took place at the Rose Caracappa Senior Center in Mount Sinai and attracted over 150 residents. “I am proud to partner with the Stony Brook Trauma Center on this great event to help raise awareness about the importance of falls

prevention and the many senior programs available throughout Suffolk County,” said Legislator Anker. At the event, Stony Brook nurses and physical therapy students conducted fall risk assessments. Then, attendees were given information about different balance programs and measures to take to prevent homes falls. The event also included representatives from the Suffolk County Office for the Aging, Suffolk County Department of Health Services, Suffolk County Department of Social Services, Suffolk County Fire Rescue and

Emergency Services, Retired Seniors Volunteer Program (RSVP), AARP, Rite Aid, and U Fitness. The Suffolk County Police were also present for Operation Medicine Cabinet, a drug take-back program that allows resident to safely dispose of unwanted or expired medications, and the Suffolk County Sheriffs were available to create emergency identification cards for attendees. The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) I FISH NY Program’s annual Fall Family Fishing Festival will be held on Saturday, October 15th, at Hempstead Lake State Park from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., DEC Regional Director Carrie Meek Gallagher announced today. DEC’s I FISH NY Program and Freshwater Fisheries Unit is sponsoring the event along with the New York State Office of Parks,

Recreation and Historic Preservation (OPRHP). “The Fall Family Fishing Festival is a great way to enjoy the outdoors and learn something about the great fun of freshwater fishing,” Regional Director Gallagher said. “The festival combines the opportunity to fish with a variety of activities for children to guarantee a fun outdoor experience for families.” A fishing license is not required to fish at this event and admissions

and parking are free. The festival begins at 10 a.m. with casting practice, loaner rods, free bait, and fish-cleaning services. The festival will also feature displays by Trout Unlimited, DEC Environmental Education, OPRHP, as well as other fishing and environmental organizations. Children’s activities will begin at 10 a.m. and include pumpkin decorating, the Raptor Project Show, a bounce slide, and face painting.

The Suffolk County Legislature has released its public hearing schedule for the 2017 Operating Budget. All hearings and committee meetings will be held at the Williams H. Rogers Legislature Building, 725 Veterans Memorial Highway in Hauppauge. The first two public hearings will be held on Wednesday, October 5th, at 2:30 p.m. and Tuesday, October 18th, at 11:30 a.m. The Operating Budget

Committee meetings are scheduled for Tuesday, October 18th and Wednesday, October 19th. The Legislative Budget Review Office will provide a report to the Legislature on Friday, October 14th, and the deadline for filing amendments is Friday, October 21st. Budget amendments will be distributed for review on Friday, October 28th and an Operating Budget Meeting for consideration

Welcome to October, the month when thoughts turn from late summer sunshine and seaside walks to apples and pumpkins and all things autumn. ‘Tis the season before THE season of holiday madness, that lull when – aside from Halloween – one can simply enjoy the crisp air while taking a hay ride with friends, navigating a corn maze or picking up some local produce at the neighborhood farm stand. Personally, I am a girl of summer, basking in

the glow of sunsets and days spent at the beach, of aimless wandering along our many shores in search of hidden oases of beauty. But autumn has its own special unique charm as well. There is nothing quite like feeling the crunch of freshly fallen leaves under your boots, of cuddling up with a good book and some hot apple cider donuts. This is the time of respite, that period of transition from long golden days to chilly evenings, the calm before the storm of feasting with family, of decking the halls

and shopping ‘til your heart’s content, for loved ones and yourself. Come November, its full-steam ahead, and the novelty of the season tends to wear off a bit amidst the chaos. Now is the time to treasure. So take October, enjoy. Take in the foliage, absorb your surroundings, snap a few photos for your autumn album, catch up with old friends over coffee – do whatever it is to soak in the season while it’s here. Because, before we know it, we’ll be on to the next one.
