So begins year two of the great “unretirement” from dance, as I dusted off the old tap shoes yet again and made my way back to the studio of my childhood once more. There is something to be said for recapturing your youth, however recent it may have been. In some ways, it is even better the second time around, as we all seem to have a newfound appreciation for the respite it provides from daily life. It is important for everyone to discover their own outlet, whether it be in the form of mental or physical release, as we each have our share of stresses to contend with. Sometimes, isolating a simple moment to take a deep breath and collect your thoughts is all that is needed. Other times, an hour spent unwinding while reading a few chapters of a book, listening to a record or even vegging out in front of
the television is an ideal way to decompress. With that, the new fall tv season is upon us, providing hours of entertainment to choose from, or randomly flip through, as the case may be. It’s funny, but back in the old VCR days, I would painstakingly plan out my viewing schedule, determining which shows to watch live, which to record, sometimes on multiple devices. Now, with the advent of DVR, I record almost everything, preferring instead to fast forward through the commercials. Of course, with this, you run the risk of having particularly popular plot lines “spoiled” for you on social media, due to everyone’s incessant need to instantaneously offer a running commentary on just about every aspect of life. What ever did we do before Twitter, I wonder? Speaking of, rumor has it

that the social media giant will be doubling the character limit of its Tweets, a piece of “news” completely irrelevant to most people; yet somehow, it has dominated the news cycle of late. Sometimes, concise is the way to be. No need to elaborate. The more space we have, the more we tend to ramble on… and, well, you know… But I digress. As October sets in, and perhaps with it a bit of autumnal weather - not that I’m complaining about the Indian summer we have been enjoying - hopefully everyone will take advantage of the fall festivals, apple and pumpkin picking and Halloween festivities happening from one end of the island to the next. Or perhaps a simple stroll through the changing leaves is more your speed. If so, might I suggest a pair of tap shoes? It does tend to lighten the mood. Happy October everyone!

Homecoming Celebration Commack High School’s Homecoming Celebration on September 23rd was awesome! With summer still in the air, the stands were filled to capacity with students, parents, and community members who came to support the home team. The Varsity Cougar Football Team responded with a 25-6 victory over Brentwood. What better way to start the festivities than with a parade, led by our Commack Cougarettes, Kickline, and Cheerleaders, accompanied by our ALUMNI OF DISTINCTION - Pictured: Matt Keltos, Assistant Principal, Commack Marching Band. The High School; Alumni of Distinction Deputy SCPD Commissioner John Barry, Jeanne Homecoming Court Martin and Dr. Scott Liebowitz; Principal Leslie Boritz, and Assistant Principals Susan arrived in fashionable style Shapiro and Michael Larson. atop convertibles, and the freshman, sophomores, juniors, and seniors proudly displayed their class theme-banners, which were later judged and the winner announced during halftime (seniors won). Commack’s youngest athletes, honor societies, and clubs also paraded up Townline Road to the High School. Many thanks to the SCPD for keeping us all safe during the parade and always. Alumni of Distinction honored this year included Commack graduates John W. Barry, Deputy Police Commissioner in Suffolk County, Dr. Scott Leibowitz, and Jeanne Martin. CHS Principal Leslie Boritz said, “It is with great pride that we induct you, with gratitude for all that you have done for Commack and for society, and we honor you as models for all learners.” Parents of senior students in the Marching Band and Cougarettes received a special recognition,
and the senior football players also presented flowers to each varsity cheerleader to thank them for their support, spirit and encouragement over the years. The halftime show’s them was “Party in the USA,” with our acrobatic cheerleaders wowing the crowd, and our Cougarettes and Marching Band commanding the field with a spectacular musical and dance performance. The crowning of the homecoming king and queen, seniors DonoVaughn Tulloch and Lauren Sabatino, was the traditional ending to the halftime festivities, and the day ended on a high note with the football team’s big win. Many thanks to our teachers, staff, students, and parents for helping to make this such a memorable event.

Kudos to the Kids Four of our Commack High School seniors were named National Merit Semifinalists. These academically talented high school seniors have an opportunity to compete for one of 7,500 National Merit Scholarships. Winners will be announced in the spring and will share in scholarships totaling more than $33 million. Congratulations to
Raphael Iskra, Nicole LaReddola, Daniel Lee, and William Liu, who earned this distinction through their high scores on the Preliminary SAT/ National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/ NMSQT®), which served as an initial screening of program entrants. The nationwide pool of Semifinalists, representing less than one percent of
U.S. high school seniors, includes the highest scoring entrants in each state. Merit Scholar designees are selected on the basis of their skills, accomplishments, and potential for success in rigorous college studies, without regard to gender, race, ethnic origin, or religious preference.
Smithtown High School East student volunteers, Smithtown Central School District administrators and board of education members, representatives of the United Way of Long Island, representatives of the United Veterans Beacon House and members of the Martella family gathered at Smithtown High School East on September 26th to kick off the combined efforts to honor the memory of former Smithtown Central School District Board of Education member Scott Martella. Smithtown High School East students will organize a yearlong community
service project to directly benefit United States veterans. Five Smithtown High School East seniors – Brooke Berroyer, Caroline Loiodice, Sofia Palazzolo, Brianna Saggese and Isabelle Sicoli – will be working to benefit the United Veterans Beacon House as this year’s community service project to honor Scott’s memory. The students, who are all part of a leadership class, will work with Beacon House to help understand some of the housing issues facing veterans on Long Island. The students plan to start the grassroots effort and anticipate their activities will grow as the
year progresses. Working with the United Way of Long Island, the Scott Martella Scholarship Memorial Fund will provide scholarships to students who will be attending college whose studies may include international relations or public service. United Way of Long Island’s president and CEO Theresa Regnante spoke about the connection between the district and the United Way. “Scott was a young man who made such an impact in such a short time,” she said. “We really hope the district takes hold of this project and it becomes a great opportunity for years to come.”

Suffolk County Legislator Rob Trotta was invited to attend the Suffolk Regional Emergency Medical Service Council’s (REMSCO) 33rd annual Regional Awards Ceremony where the Commack Volunteer Ambulance Corps was honored as the Emergency Medical Service Agency of the Year. In addition, Lea Data, RN,
EMT with the Commack Ambulance Corps was the recipient of the 2016 Suffolk Regional and NYS Emergency Service RN of Excellence Award. The Commack Volunteer Ambulance Corps was founded in 1967, after an accident took the life of a child in 1964. It now has 177 members who respond to over 3600 calls a year, as
well as participate in many community events. “As a retired police detective, I know firsthand the incredible work these volunteers perform every day, 365 days a year. I am proud to be with them as they receive this much deserved recognition,” said Suffolk County Legislator Rob Trotta.
