On Sunday October 6th “Long Island Cars” will present the “Fall Harvest” Car Show & Swap Meet on the scenic grounds of Flowerfields Fairgrounds in Saint James. Bathed in autumn colors, Flowerfields Fairgrounds, once a turn of the century flower farm, will be filled with classic and collectible automobiles including show cars from the 50’s, 60’s and 70’s, one-ofa-kind custom cars, antiques, exotics, muscle cars and imports. Show cars will compete in classed judging; trophies will be granted in more than fifty categories. Acres of vendors will be well stocked for this large end of the season show, where you can buy, trade, sell or swap auto parts, equipment, accessories
and literature, plus a wide variety of cars will be for sale in the “Car Corral.” There is a pumpkin patch with free pumpkins for the kids. You’ll experience live music, fun fair food and more. Pack up the family and plan a scenic autumn drive to Flowerfields Fairgrounds, Rte 25A in Saint James. Family Color Walk/ Run The Commack-Kings Park Rotary Club will be hosting a fun, Family Color Walk/Run to kick off fundraising for its new Protect the Bluffs Initiative. This familyoriented walk/run event will take place on Saturday, October 19, 2019 (rain date 10/20/19). Students and families will check-in between 8 AM - 9 AM and the walk/run will begin at 9:30 AM. The route will start at W.T. Rogers Middle School and proceed to the beautiful Kings Park Bluff, and then return back to W.T. Rogers for more family fun (food trucks; music; sponsor giveaways, etc.). Participants will have the option of only doing half of the route, before returning to the middle school. Student and family registration is now open at the club website and event sponsorships are available for local businesses. Residents are invited to participate in this family-priced community fundraiser with their families and have fun,
while working together to help protect our precious shoreline. The shoreline bluffs suffered severe erosion following a series of local storms in 2018 that actually forced Town of Smithtown officials to close the boardwalk at the Kings Park Bluff. The purpose of this local CommackKings Park Rotary Club initiative is to support Town of Smithtown repair and maintenance efforts along the shoreline to protect our bluffs, which residents visit and enjoy regularly. Specific projects would include supporting those efforts and strategies suggested by the Town’s Department of Environment & Waterways, which have proven effective in slowing erosion. This event will also serve to bring community awareness to the issue of shoreline erosion and the Commack- Kings Park Rotary’s other local and

It’s hard to believe that October is already here and Halloween is quickly approaching! After The Cemetery of Lost Souls, a grassroots organization ran by a family in Massapequa Park, reached out to me and told me their story, I decided to choose them for the Charity of the Month. Sometimes it’s easy to judge a book by it’s cover. For example, when you see the frightening Haunted House that they create each year, you may not be thinking that there is a deep meaning behind why they do it. Once I discovered this, along with the driving force which pushes them to bring this event back year after year, I knew I had to feature them! In 2008 Christopher and Joann (husband and wife) of Massapequa Park started decorating their yard for Halloween with their children. In 2009 they built their first prop, added some smoke, lights and store bought decorations. That same year they became aware of H.O.L.I., an organization on Long Island that compiles a list of the best decorated home “Haunts”. It became their family’s goal to make it onto that list and in 2011 they achieved that goal. In 2012, their children had the idea of using their “special talents” to help others. Their oldest son thought of making their displays more interactive by adding actors to haunt their elaborate sets and setting up a donation box that people could donate to different charities. Their charity event was officially born and every year since it has grown bigger. Each year this organization gears up to create an elaborate Haunted House on their property, located at 350 Broadway in Massapequa Park. Additionally and more importantly, each year they choose a charity to raise funds for. The best part is, they don’t keep a penny for themselves. Every bit of money raised through this event (admission, donations, sponsorships, etc.) is given to charity. They rely heavily on devoted individuals and community support, as the actors and people who put the haunt on are volunteers and most of
the actors are local students. They have raised a lot of money over the years in donations alone and have donated to charities such as Autism Speaks, The Breast Cancer Research Foundation and Long Island Cares. In 2017, Massapequa Park Mayor, Jeff Provato, even showed up to give support and was given the “Key To The Haunt”! This year they are donating to Melissa’s Wish, a non-profit organization founded with the purpose of providing short term, non-medical financial aid in the form of a grant to caregivers who are assisting those afflicated with a serious illness, injury or end of life event. This year they will bring the community a new interactive experience with the second Lost Souls Walk-Thru haunt, new rooms, new scares and new thrills! Additionally, they are still actively looking for volunteers in the following areas: Digital Marketing, Scare Team Members, Security and on their Bake Team. This year marked the Bicentennial Birthday of American poet Walt Whitman, who was born in a farmhouse built by his father on May 31, 1819. In recognition of this occasion, the United States Postal Service has issued a Walt Whitman stamp to honor the poet’s bicentennial birthday. Suffolk County Legislator Rob Trotta joined other elected officials, the Board of Trustees of Walt Whitman’s Birthplace, officials from the Postal Service and NYS Parks Department, as well as community leaders at the First Day of Issue Ceremony. “This is a historic moment with this stamp being the 32nd issued in the Literary Arts Series and it is a great way to honor Long Island’s native son, Walt Whitman,” said Suffolk County Legislator Trotta.

Heros 4 Our Heroes Smithtown officials were asked to assist in handing out over 600 hero sandwiches at Panico’s Market in Nesconset. The annual Heros for Our Heroes initiative is led by Donato Panico and his team each year as a way of saying Thank You to the people who risk their lives every day to keep us safe. This year, Panico’s market prepared over 600 three foot long heros to distribute to Police and Fire Departments serving Nassau County, Suffolk County, Queens, and New York City. Councilwoman Lisa Inzerillo, Councilman Tom Lohmann, Superintendent of Highways Robert Murphy and Town Clerk Vincent Puleo devoted their mornings to assisting Panico’s Market in this effort. “I was humbled when Donato asked us to help him, as I hold a very personal and dear place in my heart for all those first responders who worked tirelessly at Ground Zero to help families like mine have some closure. I applaud the tireless devotion of his team that goes into this operation every year. During the first week of school, the students turned their classroom into a recording studio, using their laptops and the video response platform Flip grid. The students wrote a short script to introduce themselves, share their interests and express their hopes for fourth grade. Smithtown Central School District’s elementary students celebrated Constitution Day on Sept. 17 by learning facts about the U.S. Constitution and applying them to their own classroom and school rules. Dressed in red, white and blue, students at Mills Pond and Mt. Pleasant elementary schools learned about the U.S.
Constitution and the Bill of Rights. At Mills Pond Elementary School, each class worked together to set up their classroom rules and watched a short video on the U.S. Constitution. After penning their rules for the year, each member of the class signed their names to uphold their class constitution throughout the school year. The school’s computer lab

Showing Off Their Class Constitutions was decorated and used as a meeting place for the signing. The rules and signatures will be prominently displayed in each classroom. At Mt. Pleasant Elementary School, fifth graders learned about the U.S. Constitution by watching a video FOOTBALL MASCOT UNVEILED - Smithtown High School West football mascot and creating a graphic was unveiled at the first home game on September 20th.
