Recycling Fundraiser
D
uring their three years at Mandracchia Sawmill Intermediate School in Commack, Girl Scout Junior Troop 444 collected plastic water bottles from the decorated boxes they placed in all the classrooms at their school and also at Wood Park Primary School. These same young ladies, now sixth graders at Commack Middle School, used the money they received from recycling to purchase books and DVDs for the libraries at both schools.

The Long Island Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence (LICADD) held its 34th Annual R. Brinkley Smithers Golf Invitational Monday and brought in more than $285,000 to support its life-saving substance abuse prevention programs and comprehensive addiction services. More than 185 golfers teed-off to a shot gun start in Locust Valley and 200 dinner guests gathered in support of LICADD. LICADD’s key sponsors included: The Jobin Organization; William DeLuca; Morritt, Hock & Hamroff, LLP; Signature Financial, Atlas Roll Off Corporation; Astoria Bank; Baum-Essex Manufacturing; Donna & Michael Brennan; Christopher D. He spoke of the critical needs of youth and families on Long Island and the services that LICADD offers to address the growing crisis of abuse, addiction and drug-related fatalities in our communities. Kristin Thorne, Long Island Correspondent for WABC-TV’s Eyewitness News, who served as event Emcee and Auctioneer, helped to energize the crowd throughout the award ceremony and live auction. LICADD Board Chair Jeffery Capazzi explained the appeal of the R. Brinkley Smithers Golf Invitational, “It is wonderful to be involved in organizing

Band Of Brothers Lock Haven. Under the guidance of four new coaches, the Rugby Team is finally gaining respect on campus. We practice five days a week in the hopes that we can win matches. It’s a violent sport, and many of our guys have gotten injured. There are no pads in rugby, so players face a huge risk. During a game, there are fifteen large men on the other team who want to hurt you. If you have the ball, you need to move. There is no stoppage in play. If the ball carrier goes down, a ruck is formed, and the teams fight for the ball. As the Tighthead Prop,
I’m expected to get in on all of the rucks. I do this willingly, because my teammate is often at the bottom of that pile. I look out for them, and they look out for me. Its a bond that we’ve developed on the Rugby Team. The other players have been like an extended family to me. I’m really liking this team, and I hope that I can play on it for the next four years. Villanova has really proven to be a good fit for me. I like that sense of brotherhood, and the Rugby Team is full of fun people.

Please Hold By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Customer service. It’s a thankless job, to be sure. But for those of us on the other side of the phone, it can be downright maddening. Over the course of the last several weeks, I have had the good fortune of being in touch with representatives from three major companies and one federal agency. As polite as the majority of them have been, there is simply no substitute for good oldfashioned efficiency. From poor line conditions that make it sound as though you’ve been patched through to another planet, to computer screens that keep
“freezing,” necessitating the dreaded May I put you on hold for 5-7 minutes? request, it does make you wonder how any issues are ever resolved. What always gets me is the directory, which instructs you to select your issue and what department you would like to speak with; yet, once you actually reach a human after “longer than normal wait times,” they never seem to know what your call is in reference to. And after repeated calls, and numerous notations on the account in question, it would stand to reason that you shouldn’t have to re-explain the entire problem from the beginning. And yet…
I try to be patient through it all, telling myself it’s not their fault that they work for a completely inefficient organization. They simply have a job to do, as we all do. Flipping out never sped the process along. At the end of one of these service calls, which stretched over approximately three hours (yes, you read that correctly), the woman on the other end actually took the time out to thank me, saying my patience showed a lot about my character. Well, if dealing with customer service builds character, I think I’ve reached my quota for quite a while!

The Villanova Rugby team is an organization that has gone through many twists and turns in its history. It was disbanded for a few years, only to come back stronger than ever. This year, the Villanova Rugby Football Club is on the road to a playoff finish. In our first three games, we played some of the best teams in the country. Notre Dame College and Towson are the two favorites to win it all this year. We played both of these teams, and although we lost, gave them a run for their money. This weekend, we are set to take on

Suffolk County Legislator Robert Trotta joined members of the Sgt. John Cooke VFW Post 395 St. James in presenting an award banner and a certificate of appreciation to Uncle Giuseppe’s Market Place in Smithtown for letting the veterans conduct their “Buddy Poppy” drives throughout
the year at the store. The first Buddy Poppy Drive was held in 1922 and the poppy was adopted as the official memorial flower of the Veterans of Foreign War. The poppies are assembled by veterans in VA hospitals and sold to the VFW units to sell nationwide. The money raised goes back to the

Research Symposium Set The community of St. John the Baptist is proud to announce that it will be hosting its First Annual Research Symposium on Monday, October 6th from 6 to 8 p.m. This symposium will feature the work and reflections of SJB students who are members of our GENESIS science research program. Students will present abstracts of their work and the symposium will move into breakout sessions in which each student will make a more detailed posterbased description of their work and take questions from participants. The evening will conclude with a summary review of research posters and an informal discussion. The event is designed to spark an interest in seventh and eighth grade students who love science and may be
interested in conducting their own research. Middle School teachers and parents of students are also welcome and encouraged to attend. offered each primary class the opportunity to discuss important safety information on and off the school bus. The lesson began with students demonstrating proper bus stop behavior, crossing safety and awareness of universal danger and crossing signals. Students filed onto the transformed school bus where they gathered to watch a short video on bus safety and asked questions in a simulation classroom setting. Concluding the lesson, students one-byone exited through the
emergency door on the back of the bus, fulfilling one of the mandatory New York State Department bus drill requirements. BOCES bus transportation specialist Denise Amato stressed the need of bus safety education for students. “Safety is our number one priority,” she said. “We carry precious cargo in our back seats, so it’s important for students to be properly educated and for bus drivers to continue reinforcing bus safety protocols throughout the school year.”

Cancer will take the lives of over 29,000 men in 2014. Yet this serious disease is easily detected and one of the most survivable cancers (survival rate is over 90%). The key is early detection; all men over 40 should get tested. And what better way to do that then while checking out muscle cars and listening to the music of the 50’s. Last year thanks to the free screening 28 men were informed that their PSA levels were elevated for Prostate Cancer who previously were unaware – they were told to follow up with a visit to their personal doctor.” Every Scout who attended received a letter from the organization certifying community service hours but the real importance of the event was the awareness of getting tested for Prostate Cancer and how this can save your life if caught early. Cruizin’ for a Cure’s Joseph Calvacca (Assistant to the Chair), along with Marc and Terry Merksamer, and Rosemarie Calvacca, visited Troop 343 at their regular troop meeting on September 19th, to present
each scout with a letter of appreciation as well as to publicly thank the youths for their assistance and service. Mr. Calvacca and Mr. Merksamer (who are also both Unit Commissioners for the Matinecock District, BSA) commended the youths and said “We look forward to working with you again next year for the 10th anniversary of this event.”

CHECK DONATION - Teachers Federal Credit Union (TFCU), Long Island’s largest member-based credit union, donated school supplies and $500 to Family & Children’s Association, a not-for-profit agency helping to protect and strengthen vulnerable children, seniors, families and communities on Long Island for more than 130 years. The check was presented at TFCU headquarters at 102 Motor Parkway in Hauppauge, Friday, September 12th. TFCU held a school supplies drive in August. The money was also collected as a part of the drive.

Hauppauge’s Boy Scout Troop 343 supported the 9th Annual LI Cruizin’ For A Cure Prostate Awareness Car Show on Sunday September 14th, at the Sears Auto Center Rte 106/107 in Hicksville. The scouts worked at the front/ back gates, helping set up, directing people, staffing the food table and cleaning up. At 12 noon, the Boy Scouts of Troop 343 led a Flag Ceremony and Pledge of Allegiance. When the Scouts and Adult Leaders were not working, they had the opportunity to walk around and check out the 771 vehicles from “hot rods” and muscle cars to antique and classic automobiles and motorcycles too. There was also a RC model car race track, a food court, live Doo-Wop music and free PSA Screening courtesy of Winthrop Hospital. This year, LI Cruzin’ for a Cure was recognized by the Lee Iacocca Foundation as one of the Best car show events in the country! During their three years at Mandracchia Sawmill Intermediate School in Commack, Girl Scout Junior Troop 444 collected plastic water bottles from the decorated boxes they placed in all the classrooms at their school and also at Wood Park Primary School. These same young ladies, now sixth graders at Commack Middle School, used the money they

received from recycling to purchase books and DVDs for the libraries at both schools. At Sawmill, the troop presented the gifts to Principal Michelle Tancredi and Librarian, Susanne Lercher, along with hugs. The theme of the gift was, of course, recycling and protecting the environment. The gift was also the final step of the troop’s Bronze Award

Brian and Elizabeth Crispino were raising five children – Cassie, Nicolas, Tyler, Blake and Marlow – in Westhampton Beach. Brian has been a service technician for an energy company in Hampton Bays for the past seven years, which has provided the family with financial stability.
