The West Islip Breast Cancer Coalition

For Long Island, Inc.

The West Islip Breast Cancer Coalition for Long Island, Inc. (WIBCC) is a non-profit grassroots organization that was founded in 1992. They work to eradicate Breast Cancer and gynecological cancers. Their mission is to provide support services to women undergoing treatment and requiring post-mastectomy care with their “Lead A Helping Hand” program, and to actively promote cancer and environmental awareness with education, advocacy and outreach throughout the community.

This coalition serves all of Long Island, not just West Islip, and has remained open throughout the pandemic. They helped serve those in need during this pandemic by giving them food and gas gift cards, as well as assistance with living expenses. They are grateful for involvement from local businesses that have held fundrasier events for them and even donated goods to their organization. This September they are part of Stop & Shop’s Community Bag Program, where they will receive a $1 donation every time a $2.50 reusable Community Bag is purchased at 400 Union Blvd in West Islip, unless otherwise directed by the customer through the Giving Tag attached to the bag. Additionally, they are participating in John’s Crazy Socks Giving Back Program, which started September 1st and will run through October 31st. John’s Crazy Socks is a father-son social enterprise that was

Hundreds of pink flags will be placed at the entrance of Good Samaritan Hospital. These ribbons will be tied to the flags and together the flags and ribbons will fly for the entire month of October. Strader Takes On New Role Smithtown Central School District has appointed Paul Strader as assistant superintendent of curriculum and assessment, effective Sept. 9. Strader previously served as the district’s executive director of curriculum since September 2013. Strader began his teaching career as a mathematics teacher in the Westhampton Beach School District from 2003 to 2008. In July 2008, he joined the Smithtown Central School District as director of mathematics. “I am truly honored for the opportunity to continue serving the students, families and staff of Smithtown in this newly

More Than 400 Smithtown Students Receive AP Recognition The College Board has recognized 463 current seniors and 2020 graduated students from both Smithtown High School East and Smithtown High School West as Advanced Placement Scholars. These awards, which are divided among several categories, were bestowed upon the students based on their exceptional achievement on the national exams. Some of the highlights include:

• 213 students qualified for the AP Scholar Award by receiving a score of 3 or higher on three or more exams. • 77 students received the AP Scholar with Honor Award by earning an average grade of 3.25 on all AP exams taken and grades of 3 or higher on four or more of those exams. • 145 students qualified for the AP Scholar with Distinction Award by earning an average grade of at least

3.5 on all AP exams taken and grades of 4 or higher on five or more of these exams. • 28 students received the highest designation of National AP Scholar by earning an average grade of 4 or higher on all AP exams taken and grades of 4 or higher on eight or more of these exams. AP courses completed with a score of 3 or higher on the final exam afford students the opportunity to earn college credit.

Northwell Staff Receives One In A Million Award

Northwell Health staff are being honored with Multiplying Good’s One in a Million Award in recognition of the care they provided during New York’s coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic. “At Northwell, our tireless and dedicated staff treated more than 77,000 people when New York was the COVID-19 epicenter. They worked through and beyond exhaustion to care for people in need,” said Michael Dowling, Northwell Health president and CEO. “I am humbled by our staff’s unyielding grit and compassion and I am proud that they are being recognized with this award.” Northwell’s frontline staff cared for more COVID-19 patients than any other US health system and did so under heroic circumstances. From emergency medical technicians who manned the ambulances to phlebotomists deployed to drive thru testing sites, caregivers at hospitals and environmental services workers who kept everything clean, it was a

true team effort. The One in a Million Awards Campaign celebrates the millions whose acts of bravery, generosity and kindness are bringing the nation together in this time and, through recognition, inspire others to do the same. Virtual Thyroid Cancer Support Group ThyCa Long Island, a support group for thyroid cancer survivors will be holding a free virtual meeting on the Zoom platform on Sunday, October 11 from 1:00 pm 3:00 pm. Young Adults And Mental Illness According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, 8.8 million young adults between the ages of 18 and 25 report having a mental illness. Among those who reported such illnesses, 42 percent indicated their illness went untreated. Substance abuse disorders also are more common among 18- to 25-year-olds than many people may think. SAMHSA notes that 5.1 million young adults report having a substance abuse disorder, and 87 percent of those with disorders are not treated. Millions of people across the globe get flu shots each year. Flu shots protect people against influenza, but they might provide even greater benefits in 2020. As the world continues to confront the outbreak of the COVID-19 virus, it’s imperative that people everywhere take every step necessary to protect themselves and others. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention notes that a flu vaccine will not protect people against COVID-19. However, flu vaccines have been shown to reduce the risk of illness related to the flu. Those illnesses weaken people’s immune systems, making them more vulnerable to other viruses, including COVID-19. Flu vaccines have also

been shown to reduce the risk of hospitalization. That’s a significant benefit of being vaccinated, as people who get their ﬂu shots can indirectly help hospitals conserve potentially scarce resources. As the COVID-19 virus rapidly spread late in the winter of 2019-20, many hospitals across the country and even the globe were stretched incredibly thin. So anything ordinary citizens can do to alleviate such burdens can help save lives while also making hospital workers’ jobs easier and less stressful. Many people may be concerned about going out and getting a ﬂu shot in 2020. That’s especially likely for people who live in communities where

the COVID-19 virus is spreading. However, the CDC notes that getting a flu shot in 2020 is an essential part of protecting your health and the health of your family. Many doctor’s offices are now insisting patients wait in their cars until doctors are ready to see them, and masks may be required when entering the doctor’s office. Such measures can reduce the risk of getting the COVID-19 virus when visiting a doctor’s office for a flu shot or another visit, so patients should not be hesitant to receive their vaccinations in 2020. Just as skin requires certain protection from the sun and heat in the summer, skin has special needs in the fall and winter. Fall and winter are often characterized by cold, dry weather, which can make these times of year particularly challenging for people with dry or sensitive skin. UV rays can damage the skin any time of year, even if the rays are not as strong as during the summer. UV radiation accelerates and increases the risk of skin cancer. As a global pandemic forced people from all walks of life to prioritize their personal health each time they left their homes, many individuals sought ways to take a more active role in their health care. Proactive health care has long been touted by medical professionals, though many people still don’t take such recommendations to heart. In fact, a recent report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimated that as much as 75 percent of health care spending in the United States is reactive in nature, meaning that money is going toward treating conditions and diseases rather than preventing them from occurring in the first place. Taking an active role in your own health care is easier than people may think. And the benefits of such a proactive approach are numerous, including a reduced risk for various diseases.

Smithtown Starts Intramural Sports Program In an effort to keep its students engaged in sporting activities despite the current restrictions for studentathletes, Smithtown Central School District has launched an intramural sports program for those in grades 6-12. The six-week program will begin on Oct. 5 and run through Nov. 13 and is open to any students who wish to participate. The intramural sports program will be offered for most of the sports held during the fall season. At the high school level, sports include: girls and boys soccer, boys golf, football, field hockey, girls tennis and boys and girls cross-country, girls and boys volleyball. Middle school programs will include boys and girls soccer, field hockey,

football, boys and girls cross-country and girls tennis. According to Patrick Smith, Smithtown Central School District’s coordinator of physical education, health, athletics and nurses, many of the coaches who were slated to head the fall sports teams will be overseeing the programs. “Students on a hybrid or fully remote program are eligible to participate,” Smith said. “This program will be a rewarding substitute for

our usual interscholastic program.” Smith added that the program will be run safely with social distancing requirements in place. The sports will focus on teamwork, skill development and conditioning and will not include any game play. Outdoor Dining Heats Up Town of Smithtown Supervisor Ed Wehrheim made a surprise announcement extending temporary outdoor dining to December 31st, 2020. The proclamation was made as the Kings Park Chamber of Commerce distributed 15 outdoor heat lamps and fuel to local restaurant owners, courtesy of a $5,000 grant from PSEG Long Island to assist local business communities with new ways of getting back to business. The Kings Park Chamber of Commerce distributed the outdoor heat lamps to Legends Bar and Grill, Ciro’s, Relish, Short Stop Pizzeria, Simply Greek, Long River, Cafe Red, and Shanahans Bar and Grill. “I want to commend Karyn Kemp-Smith and PSEG-LI, the Kings Park Chamber of Commerce,

Executive Director, Diane Motherway and President,Tony Tanzi... This is exactly the kind of boost local businesses need right now, to help make them whole again. When I shared today’s good news with the Town Council, we were inspired.
