On Tuesday evening, North Shore Child & Family Guidance Center hosted a fundraiser for its Children’s Center at Nassau County Family Court. The event was held at Tesoro’s Ristorante, located at 967 Old Country Road in Westbury, and featured Long Island singing sensation and recent television personality, Sal

“The Voice” Valentinetti. Sal entertained the crowd with a selection of covers from the likes of the Rat Pack and Bobby Darin and was met with an enthusiastic reception. More than 60 guests came out to support the Children’s Center, and raised in excess of $13,000. The Children’s Center provides care and early learning to almost 2,000

children annually, ages 6 weeks-12 years, while their parents or guardians are in court. Executive Director Andrew Malekoff spoke about the positive impact of the Children’s Center in the community, and added “State funding cuts have caused similar facilities across the state to close, but thanks to the generous support of our donors, the Children’s

Center at Nassau Family Court remains open and providing services full-time.” Mr. Malekoff introduced Dr. Nellie TaylorWalthrust, Director of The Leeds Place (under which the Children’s Center operates), who referenced the Center’s focus on early childhood education, stating that the Center prides itself

It was a day for celebration in Islip on September 17th, as students throughout the district, their families, friends and visitors lined the streets for the annual homecoming parade. The theme of this year’s floats, which were designed by Islip High School students, was superheroes. After their departure from Islip Town Hall, the freshmen accompanied a Hulk-themed float, while the sophomores traveled with Captain America. Following them were the juniors with their

amazing Spider-Manthemed float, and seniors sported a Mermaid Manthemed float, a character made popular through “SpongeBob SquarePants.” As students traveled toward Islip High School, supporters lined the streets with words of encouragement. Once they arrived, the floats were placed on the front lawn of the school, where they’ll remain for several days. Community members had a chance to enjoy the annual carnival before the start of the game. Visitors tried their luck at various

games, which were run by district students. At halftime, seniors John Mullins and Mackenzie Moran were announced as the 2016 homecoming king and queen. While the hometown Buccaneers fought hard, they fell to Hauppauge, 14-0. “It was the perfect day for a homecoming game,” said Principal Michael Mosca. “Although we didn’t come out on top on the score sheet, it was a victory for the community and an amazing display of community pride.”

Working hand in hand with Bea Peterson of the EJ Autism Foundation, the special needs children from the town and the Life Skills class of The East Islip High School planted these beautiful baskets. It all starts at a non-profit greenhouse in Moriches. Smile Farm (IGHL) grows the flowers in small pots at their facility that employs the developmentally disabled population. The flower pots are transported to Flower Power Nursery in East Islip, where under Dana and Christine’s direction, special needs children from the town plant them up into the 14 inch hanging baskets. They are watered and nurtured until they are ready to grace the town early in May. Ray the Plumber and Zoom Drain send out their fleet of trucks and workers to pick up the baskets and hang all 220 of them. Bob Maxner, with some help from Kyle and Dana Ehlich, water them every

HONORING THE FALLEN - Hauppauge School District students and staff remembered the men and women who lost their lives on September 11th, 2001 by wearing red, white and blue and displaying their patriotism throughout the District.

Hitting the Ground Running

middle schools in the Diocese of Rockville Centre, offering a variety of sports each season, ranging from Baseball, Softball, Basketball and Soccer to Volleyball, Lacrosse, Bowling, and Cross Country. In Cross Country running, teams and individuals run a race on open-air courses over natural terrain. The courses vary in length, may include surfaces of grass and earth, pass through woodlands and open country, and include hills, flat ground and sometimes gravel road. The benefits of Cross Country are both mental and physical. Cross Country training builds versatility and stamina, with experience running over a wide range of speeds and terrains.

Saints Cyril and Methodius has participated in CMSAA programs for over five years and this year’s Cross Country Team includes 16 middle school boys and girls, whose practices and meets take them to a diverse range of Long Island terrains and parks, such as Belmont Lake State Park, Sunken Meadow, and Heckscher Park, to name a few. At the heart of the CMSAA’s Mission Statement is their role in helping develop wellrounded athletes, so the program’s coaches seek to promote physical endurance and good sportsmanship, while fostering teamwork and Catholic values in all of their players.

First place team, Paul Williams & John Parish, with a record of 45-10, played the 6th place team of Keith Leveling & Andy Rinaldi with a record of 30–25. They advanced to the finals, beating Keith & Andy in three straight games. The second place team, Lou Malandra & Mike Nemschick Sr., who also had a record of 4510, played the fourth place team of Bernie Van Rossem & Ray Warenik. Their record was 35-20. Lou & Mike advanced to the finals, beating Bernie & Ray in four games. In the finals Paul & John beat Lou & Mike in five close games. Game five was won after Paul threw a double and John matched his double! Thanks to all the spectators who came down to watch these very exciting games. Paul & John have retained

their Championship title for the past four years. Thanks to all the volleyball and horseshoe players for making this another great season. This year, the Recreation department facilitated the Tuesday night Horseshoe league as well. The format of this league was a little different than the Wednesday night league in that there were no semi-finals and finals. The first place team was brothers Phil & George Grippo, with a record of 57-28. The second place team was John Diver & Ken Benson; they finished with a record of 53-32. In third place, with a record of 52-33, were Bernie Van Rossem and Norm Shebe. In this league, the top five players with the highest ringer percentage were Phil Grippo - 35.2%, Lou Malandra - 26.9%, Mike Nemschick, Sr. - 25.1%, Bernie Van Rossem - 24.5% & Gary Happich - 23.9%.

New York’s Lieutenant Governor, Kathy Hochul, surprised chemistry teacher Stephanie O’Brien today at Commack High School, when she came to present her with the Empire State Excellence in Teaching Award and a check for $5,000. The award recognizes educational leaders who “exemplify the professional work of thousands of outstanding, progressive teachers and innovative educators striving to attain New York standards and success for

all of their students.” As a representative of the mission and in-depth work of teachers across the State, she and other honorees will meet with Governor Cuomo and serve as an Ambassador of the Teaching Profession, and have the opportunity to share insights on professional learning and advise on educational trends with regional development leaders, university leaders in teacher education, and policy makers.

“We have amazing teachers in this District,” said Superintendent, Dr. Donald James. “We’re so proud of Stephanie. She was named a NYS Master Teacher last year, and is always seeking new ways to teach and inspire learning. This is well-deserved recognition for her dedication to her students and for her ceaseless efforts to increase her own knowledge and skills to become an even more effective teacher and mentor.”

Dare to Dream year – and then attended Queens College (Class of 1994 alumnus) on a swim team scholarship. “I swam under Coach Mike Meyer for my entire time on the Hauppauge Club and School Teams. He taught me how to be a competitive swimmer and how to conduct myself as an athlete and about sportsmanship,” stated Wilde, who was in close touch with Coaches Mike Meyer and Dan McBride leading up to the English Channel swim as well as right after it. Currently a Brooklyn resident, Wilde retains strong ties to the Hauppauge community in which he grew up. My parents still live in Hauppauge and while he was in England preparing for the EC swim, Wilde received numerous emails and texts from his Hauppauge friends who encouraged him to stay strong and to dare to accomplish his dream. To date, only about 420 Americans have ever made a successful open water swim across the English Channel. Wilde now proudly ranks among these elite few. As to what’s next on the horizon, Wilde, who also serves as a Saltaire, Fire Island lifeguard, quipped, “there are many other swims out there to do.”

Seven year-old Hauppauge native Richard Wilde dared to dream of one day swimming across the English Channel (EC) – “the ultimate challenge for open water swimmers.” The 43-year-old New York City Firefighter made that dream come true when he completed a solo swim across the English Channel on September 12th, 2016, in 12 hours and 22 minutes. Accompanied by Viking Princess Captain Reg Brickell, Ray Brickell and a crew member, Wilde began his swimming odyssey in Dover, England as the dawn broke at 6:40 a.m. “The EC is the most difficult open water swim because it is cold, long, rough, windy, and the tides are strong. There is never going to be a perfect day where you will encounter easy conditions,” he described. “I battled strong winds and rough conditions for the first few hours. Then it got cold – the water

temperature never went above 63 degrees – and wet suits are not allowed. I knew I needed to swim faster to beat the tides and to make it to France before the sun went down and it would get even colder.” Despite these challenges, the cold, tired – but victorious – Wilde achieved his dream of swimming the English Channel when he stepped onto the shoreline of Wissant, France at 7:12 p.m. He prepared for the EC swim by training more than 400 miles during winter 2016 and also by swimming in a lot of cold water. “To be a successful open water swimmer, you have to be in swimming condition to battle through the elements that you will encounter,” he stated. Wilde also swam 28 miles around Manhattan in the Hudson River Race to ensure that he had the stamina to make the approximately 24-mile trip across the Straits of Dover (which can be anywhere from 21-26 miles depending on the route and existing weather conditions). Wilde’s love of the water began as a member of the Hauppauge Sea Eagles. The Hauppauge High School Class of 1990 alumnus swam on the School Swim Team – where he was Team captain during his senior

Students at East Islip’s Connetquot Elementary School learned how to change the world by cultivating kindness, thanks to an inspirational assembly by author and performer Rich Specht of ReesSpecht Life. Specht’s book, “A Little Rees Specht Cultivates Kindness,” was inspired by the outpouring of help his family received after losing his young son Rees, and the presentation engaged the youngsters by comparing spreading kindness to

planting seeds, through song. The program was funded by East Islip’s For the Kids Foundation, which purchased an autographed copy of the book for each East Islip elementary school student. “It was inspirational to see how Rich Specht made powerful connections to the students of Connetquot, through his words and songs, and the book he wrote,” said Principal Deborah Smith. “When he asked the children how they could
