Brightening the Outdoors Sarah Adamo, a senior at Smithtown High School West in the Smithtown Central School District, decided to give something back to the school community that is so special to her. As part of her Girl Scout Gold Award project, Adamo built garden box planters for the outdoor space at Accompsett Middle School. The planters,
which she painted blue and feature AMS displayed on the outside, are filled with different plantings to beautify the outdoor space used during recess and outdoor educational instruction. Adamo has been a Girl Scout since kindergarten and has been working on her Gold Award project since last May. She choose Accompsett Middle School
because of the personal connection she feels toward the school. “I remember all of the teachers and administrators who made my years here a great experience,” she said. “Now students can use this space to learn as part of the horticulture elective class as well.” Adamo also made garden boxes for the local nursing homes.

Commack Commemorates
Legislator Leslie Kennedy joined hundreds of members of the Commack community at Commack High School to commemorate those killed sixteen years ago in the 9/11 attacks. At 8:46 a.m., the first of four hijacked airplanes was flown into the North Tower of the World Trade Center complex in New York City.
Over the course of the next hour and a half, two of the remaining three passenger airplanes hit their targets, the South Tower and the Pentagon respectively, with a fourth deliberately crashed in Pennsylvania as passengers fought to retake control from the hijackers. Nearly three thousand people were killed in the attack, and thousands more (most of them first responders such as firemen and policemen) suffered and continue to suffer from debilitating injuries from debris, dust and contaminants released in the subsequent collapse of three of the World Trade Center towers. In a somber ceremony on the Heroes Memorial Track, Legislator Kennedy, state and local officials (including New York State Senate Majority Leader John Flanagan), surviving first responders, members of the Marine Corps and Commack citizens all looked on silently as the memorial bell was rung, once for each of the passenger airplanes crashed sixteen years ago. Previously, bagpipers from the United States Marine Corps and Rabbi Mendel Teldon of the Chabad of Commack had opened the ceremony, with the latter offering a prayer for those killed sixteen years ago and those still affected today. Speakers included Commack High School superintendent Dr. Donald James, Commack Board of Education President Steven Hartman and John Feal of the Feal Good Foundation, a nonprofit that fights
for treatment and compensation on behalf of surviving victims and first responders. Commack citizens who were lost in the attack and their families were honored with wreaths in front of an illuminated representation of the twin towers, while other attendees walked the track and left daisies in remembrance of those who were lost. “The world changed for everyone on this day, sixteen years ago,” Legislator Kennedy remarked, “but for those of us who lost friends family and loved ones, the world ended. For many of them, there is no moving on, at least not entirely. Today, many of us here are too young to remember what ended and what was lost on that fateful day. But as friends, family, loved ones, and fellow countrymen, we have a duty to remember those who were lost and to support and protect those they have left behind. Heritage Fair
Last Saturday, Legislator Leslie Kennedy had the opportunity to take part in the Smithtown Historical Society’s Heritage Country Fair. This yearly event serves as an occasion for
the Smithtown Historical Society to display Smithtown’s rich history. In addition to traditional music, dance and a Historic flyover of Smithtown, the fair featured an old-
time baseball game, an antique car show, as well as a petting zoo for the children. Many in the Smithtown community came out to take part in this historical celebration.
WE THE CLASS - Dressed in red, white and blue, the students at Mills Pond Elementary School in the Smithtown Central School District celebrated Constitution Day by signing classroom constitutions on September 15th. The Commack Coalition of Caring, a charitable 501 c (3), will host its 7th
Annual Red Ribbon Week 5K Run/Walk on Saturday, October 28th, at 9 a.m., with a free ½ mile Kids Fun Run at 8:30 a.m. Both events will begin and end at Commack High School. Red Ribbon Week brings people together to raise awareness of the dangers of alcohol, tobacco and other drugs, and encourages prevention, early intervention, and treatment services. It is the largest, most visible prevention awareness campaign observed

New Website Unveiled The Long Island Radio & Television Historical Society is proud to announce the inauguration of their newly designed and updated website. The website can be accessed at: https://lirtvhs. org/ OUR HISTORY In 1995, it became apparent that the FAA radio station, once the site of the
WWI historic Telefunken radio station, was to be abandoned and destroyed. A movement to save the property was undertaken by Constance Currie and the Sayville Historical Society. Although there was a lot of support, the attempt unfortunately failed after a massive fire destroyed the remaining buildings. What was left
was bulldozed along with the antenna fields. As a result, Constance Currie and Ralph Williams, a renowned radio historian, collector of Atwater Kent radios, and author, encouraged the people who had come together to save the Telefunken site, to create a historical society that would keep the history of Long Island radio alive.

A Cool Lesson Sixth-grade technology education students throughout the Smithtown Central School District participated in a tasty lesson on September 15th. The students made their own ice cream as part of their science of technology module of Project Lead the Way. At Great Hollow Middle School, sixth-graders in
Brian Costello’s technology class learned about atoms and molecules as an introduction to chemistry. The class then studied chemical engineering and how it is used in food production. Using ice, salt, sugar, vanilla and heavy cream, the students learned how the salt disrupts the frozen water molecules
causing the ice to melt into a cold liquid. Using different mixing methods, the groups measured the temperatures of the cold liquid that eventually turned into a frozen ice cream mixture. Students had the option to add chocolate or strawberry syrup and enjoy their frozen treat.
The first members were from the Sayville Historical Society, Steuben Society, Long Island history buffs, amateur radio operators, and radio engineers who had worked in early RCA, MacKay, and other radio facilities. Chartered by the New York Education Department as the Friends of Long Island Wireless
History, the historical society eventually became the Long Island Radio & Television Historical Society to reflect a broader interest in the rich and diverse history of communications on Long Island from early wireless through the beginnings of radio and television. Through the years, the society has exhibited
in libraries, the Long Island Maritime Museum, schools and the Fire Island Lighthouse. They are currently working with Suffolk County Community College as well as planning exhibits for the American Airpower Museum in Farmingdale.
Legislator Leslie Kennedy met with other county officials at the 4th Precinct on Monday for the 9/11 memorial. Two Boy Scouts, Kieran Morse and Bryan Sinclair chose to do their Eagle Scout Project to enhance the Survivor Tree Memorial at the 4th Precinct, and in remembrance of those who lost their lives on September 11th, 2001.
Kieran built a patio made of paver stones around the tree in the back of the 4th precinct, and Bryan Sinclair built a stunning stone benches on the stone patio. This beautiful addition to the 4th precinct, enhances the area where members of the community can come and reflect on the tragedy of 9/11 and watch the Survivor Tree as it grows
and remains a tribute to perseverance. “I am so proud of Kieran and Bryan, they have built a beautiful patio around the tree,” said Legislator Kennedy. “I think it is important that our youth remember the events that happened that day which shape our nation, 16 years later and we are rebuilding much stronger than ever before.”
