The Twilight Wish Foundation is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization whose mission is to honor and enrich the lives of seniors through intergenerational Twilight Wish celebrations. Since the foundation’s founding in 2003, their goal has been to make the world a nicer place to age, one Twilight Wish at a time. When a Twilight Wish is granted, a senior is recognized for all that they have done throughout their lives and is shown that they are appreciated and valued. This organization truly makes a difference in the lives of seniors nationwide. Often the elderly gets overlooked or they simply can’t seem to achieve their goals on their own. This is where Twilight Wish steps in. Judy was a local wish recipient from Kings Park. Her wish was to visit her mother in Rochester and take her to her favorite restaurant. Judy received round-trip plane tickets, a hotel stay, a car rental and a gift certificate to her mother’s favorite restaurant from this foundation! The process of applying to be a wish recipient is fairly simple. You can visit their website at www. twilightwish.org and click on the “Wishes” tab followed by “Request A Twilight Wish”. From here you can start the process. Applications can be submitted for yourself or on behalf of someone else. The foundation has a committee that meets on a monthly basis to review new applications and they determine the eligibility of the applicants and wish requests. If approved, the foundation will grant the wish as funding and resources become available (if they are not already available).

The Smithtown Senior Citizens Department offers a Home Delivered Meals Program for residents ages 60 and over residing within the Town of Smithtown. Hot, nutritious meals are delivered by volunteers to the frail homebound elderly Mondays through Fridays. Each meal consists of one third of the current recommended dietary allowance for the 60 plus age group. Regular diets are provided, however accommodations for low sodium and diabetic diets can be fulfilled upon request. Food service is contracted with Zan’s Kosher Deli in Lake Grove. Eligibility Requirements: To be eligible for Meals on Wheels, applicants must be: • Able to accept responsibility for consumption of meals Assessed inhome by the Meals on Wheels assessor. • Have no family or other persons capable of providing adequate

his health crisis, Ms. Gross and her team took the lead in organizing his hospital stay, scheduling his medical appointments and surgeries, even participated in a Trooper escort upon discharge. It was thanks to the ongoing collaboration of each team involved in his care that, Sgt. Antonelli was able to leave the hospital after five days of inpatient care on his own to continue his recovery at home. “In health care we’re here to serve, much like the New York State Troopers protect and serve,” said Ronda. Gross. “Receiving this award is an honor that validates what we do every day at Northwell NetworkCare, providing the best possible care for everyone.” Dr. Mark Jarrett, who served as a Trooper Surgeon for the past four years, is now a chief medical administrator on the advisory board of the State Trooper Surgeons program. In this capacity, Dr. Jarrett was instrumental in developing a transport system for Troopers in need, either moving them from one health system location to another or bringing them home following hospitalization. In addition, Dr. Jarrett has also served on the NYS Troopers business leadership committee. “We are honored to receive this award from the NYS Troopers PBA,” said Dr. Jarrett, “The opportunity to help those who serve and their families is our reward.” “Northwell Health continues to be a stellar option for many of our NYS Troopers and we sincerely appreciate the relationships we have built with Ronda Gross and Dr. Mark Jarrett,” said Michael Brooks, Director of Medical Operations for the State Trooper Surgeons

Two seniors from Smithtown High School East in the Smithtown Central School District – Ritvik Chilakamarthy and Brendan Dervan – were among the approximately 16,000 students across the county who were named

Ronda Gross, RN, MSN, vice president of Northwell NetworkCare and Mark Jarrett, MD, SVP, chief quality officer for Northwell Health, have each received the Doctor Chandler award from the New York State Troopers Police Benevolent Association (PBA), in recognition of their outstanding medical expertise and development of the highest level of care for New York State Troopers and their families. Both Ms. Gross and Dr. Jarrett have worked with the State Trooper Surgeons, a division of the official union of New York State Troopers – the NYS Troopers PBA, for several years. They have each played a direct role in the creation of the PBA’s Statewide Health Care Navigation Service, providing necessary assistance, to some 15,000 Troopers and their family members. In doing so, both Ms. Gross and Dr. Jarrett have protected those who protect the people of New York. Ronda Gross, who serves as a medical liaison to the medical care team, has played a direct role in guiding access to care for many NYS Troopers. Her relationship with the New York State Troopers began in September of 2015 when she was asked to initiate a referral relationship with their organization. In response to that request, Ms. Gross created the NYS Troopers and PBA Hotline a dedicated line to the clinical care team of Northwell registered nurses available 24/7 to assist New York State Troopers. a safe place. Guardians of Rescue are working with her to bring the dogs back to America, where they will find them permanent homes. They currently have people on the ground in the Bahamas in order to bring the dogs back to America. On September 9, 2019, the hard-hitting animal rescue organization brought back the first 30 dogs. They plan to relocate a total of 98 of them to America. They have teamed up with Animal Aid USA and Animal Wellness Foundation to help prepare and load the first group of dogs that were airlifted to safety in Florida. The ultimate goal, after they are fed and receive a health examination, is to find them new permanent homes in the United States. More flights are scheduled in the days ahead, until all of the abandoned animals are in safe haven in America. “We are on a mission to help these animals, and we hope that the community will help support the mission,” adds Misseri. “There are many dogs in need of food, medicine, shelter, and permanent loving homes. Together, we can make a wonderful difference.” Guardians of Rescue desperately need financial donations to assist with the large-scale dog rescue

Just days ago, the nation watched as Hurricane Dorian ravaged the Bahamas. Thousands of people have been left without homes, and many have lost contact with their dogs. While some were lost in the storm, others may have been left behind in an attempt to get the family to safety. Now, hundreds of dogs are in need of being brought to safety, and provided with medical care and food. Guardians of Rescue, located in Smithtown, have stepped in to help in this dire situation, bringing in the dogs on chartered planes from the Bahamas to safe spots in Florida and New York. “We are no strangers to helping dogs in dire situations, this is exactly why our organization exists,” explains Robert Misseri, president of Guardians of Rescue, an animal rescue organization. “We will do everything we can to help as many dogs as we are able to, but we can’t do it without the help of the public. This is going to be a very costly endeavor, so we can use all the financial assistance we can get.” Chella Phillips, a Nassau, Bahamas resident who manages The Voiceless Dogs of Nassau, took in nearly 100 stray dogs when the storm was approach, in order to provide them with

Smithtown Central School District’s elementary students celebrated Constitution Day on Sept. 17 by learning facts about the U.S. Constitution and applying them to their own classroom and school rules. Dressed in red, white and blue, students at Mills Pond and Mt. Pleasant elementary schools learned

about the U.S. Constitution and the Bill of Rights. At Mills Pond Elementary School, each class worked together to set up their classroom rules and watched a short video on the U.S. Constitution. After penning their rules for the year, each member of the class signed their names to uphold their class constitution throughout the school year. The

school’s computer lab was decorated and used as a meeting place for the signing. The rules and signatures will be prominently displayed in each classroom. At Mt. Pleasant Elementary School, fifth graders learned about the U.S. Constitution by watching a video and creating a graphic organizer.

Food service is contracted with Zan’s Kosher Deli in Lake Grove. A suggested meal contribution of $2.25 is recommended. Persons with self-declared incomes at or above 185% of the federal poverty level are

encouraged to make a contribution equal to the actual cost of the meal. Any contributions made are confidential. Funding for this program is provided by the U.S. Administration for Community Living, the New York State Office for the Aging, Suffolk County Office for the Aging, and the Town of Smithtown. Family Color Walk/Run The Commack-Kings Park Rotary Club will be hosting a fun, Family Color Walk/Run to kick off fundraising for its new Protect the Bluffs Initiative. This familyoriented walk/run event will take place on Saturday, October 19, 2019 (rain date 10/20/19). Students and families will check-in between 8 AM - 9 AM and the walk/run will begin at 9:30 AM. The route will start at W.T. Rogers Middle School and proceed to the beautiful Kings Park Bluff, and then return back to W.T. Rogers for more family fun (food trucks; music; sponsor giveaways, etc.). Participants will have

the option of only doing half of the route, before returning to the middle school. Student and family registration is now open at the club website and event sponsorships are available for local businesses. Residents are invited to participate in this family-priced community fundraiser with their families and have fun, while working together to help protect our precious shoreline. The shoreline bluffs suffered severe erosion following a series of local storms in 2018 that actually forced Town of Smithtown officials to close the boardwalk at the Kings

Park Bluff. The purpose of this local CommackKings Park Rotary Club initiative is to support Town of Smithtown repair and maintenance efforts along the shoreline to protect our bluffs, which residents visit and enjoy regularly. Specific projects would include supporting those efforts and strategies suggested by the Town’s Department of Environment & Waterways, which have proven effective in slowing erosion. This event will also serve to bring community awareness to the issue of shoreline erosion and the Commack- Kings Park

Second Annual Commack Day! TiedIn Media Presents the Second Annual Commack Day will be held Saturday, September 28th, rain date Sunday, September 29th, from 11 am to 5 pm. Celebrating Volunteers the Town of Smithtown Senior Citizens Department honored over 100 volunteers for their hard work and service to the Senior Citizens Center. Myths And Facts About Recycling Cartons (NAPSI)—Recycling is one of the easiest ways the average person can help the environment. Not only does recycling prevent items from ending up in landfills, it reduces the amount of raw materials used to make new products. Here are some myths and facts about recycling commonly used food and beverage cartons: Myth: Cartons can’t be recycled. Fact: Cartons are certainly recyclable. They can be turned into new products, such as

paper towels, tissues and writing paper. They can also be turned into environmentally friendly building materials, in a process that uses no water or chemicals. Myth: If a package doesn’t have a recycling logo on it, it’s not recyclable. Fact: What can and can’t be recycled varies by community and is primarily dependent on the recycling facility. Cartons can carry the standard “Please Recycle” logo under the Federal

Trade Commission’s green guidelines. It’s best to contact your community or check its website to find out what can and can’t be recycled. Myth: You have to put your recyclables in a plastic bag and then in your recycling bin. Fact: Plastic bags can jam up equipment at recycling centers, slowing everything down and potentially preventing recyclables from getting recycled. Instead, place materials loosely in recycling bins or carts.

Myth: You have to crush cartons and remove the caps and straws before recycling them. Fact: Just empty any remaining product. No crushing is required, and the caps can be left on. You may want to stuff the straws back into the carton to make sure they don’t become litter. Myth: Cartons have a waxy coating and therefore can’t be recycled. Fact: Food and beverage cartons don’t contain any wax. Cartons are made mainly from paper with

thin layers of plastic and, in some cases, aluminum. Myth: Cartons have multiple layers that prevent them from being recycled. Fact: The multiple layers in cartons are broken down during the recycling process. The paper is used to make new paper products and the aluminum or plastic can be used to generate energy or become binding. In some cases, the entire carton is used to make building materials. Myth: Most places

don’t accept cartons for recycling. Fact: Carton recycling is now available for 62 percent of U.S. households— more than 72.5 million homes—through curbside and drop-off programs.
