Rare Artifacts Return Whaling artifacts related to the history of Long Island are a fairly rare item today. When they do appear on the market, collectors fight hard to acquire them. Items specifically related to Greenport – one of Long Island’s active whaling ports during the 19th century – are even harder to find. So what to do when a group of items relating to one of Greenport’s most prominent whaling
families hits the auction block? Collaborate. “It seemed like a nobrainer,” stated Geoffrey K. Fleming, Director of the Southold Historical Society, “to try and bring together a couple of groups that together might be able to acquire these items,” he continued. The items in question were a collection of papers, account books, log books, and even a Walrus

what we should do, with only a few days before the auction was set to happen,” stated Ted Webb, President of the Brecknock Hall Foundation. “I thought this is an opportunity we should not pass up,” stated Bob Syron, President and CEO of Peconic Landing. In the end, everyone pledged a certain amount of money towards trying to acquire the papers. Additional monies were secured through a donation from the Reichert Family Foundation. The auction itself was a bit harrowing. “I was bidding by phone for the group, and there was a great deal of interest during the sale in the items we wanted,” stated Fleming. Nearly all of the items went quickly past their estimates. But in the end, the group succeeded in getting all the lots they were interested in. Among the more important items acquired were the

Tusk relating to the 19th century whaling activities of David Gelston Floyd of Greenport, builder and owner of the wellknown stone mansion, Brecknock Hall. Fleming discovered just by chance that the items were being offered for sale at auction by a Floyd descendant. “I emailed the auction house in New Hampshire about something else and they happened to mention in passing that they had these items coming up – I was stunned.” Fleming immediately recognized the importance of the items, having just written a history of the Floyd family and Brecknock Hall for the Brecknock Hall Foundation, where Fleming serves on the board. He began talking with some of his contacts at the foundation, along with Peconic Landing, who owns the hall today. “Everyone was very excited, so we arranged a meeting to strategize
misunderstanding song lyrics. Which, for someone who has what I would call a fairly deep appreciation for words, is a bit odd. It just goes to show that the art of enunciation is going the way of cassette tapes and CDs – lost, down the drain, nonexistent. It’s funny, with the advent of apps like Pandora and Spotify, most lyrics are just a glance away. To say my interpretation of them
lyrics – pure poetry; listen to them – and you’re left a bit confused. Rap is another genre that I’ve always had a problem translating. While the delivery may be impressive, there are times when you question whether what you’re listening to is English or not. Listen to the censored version and, well, there goes most of the lyrics altogether. Country, while one of my least favorite choices
when it comes to properly conveying the message at hand. If only the sound was a bit less… twangy. Ah, but that’s what makes the musical merrygo-round so fun, isn’t it? Styles for everyone, and a million different ways to access them. What did we do before all this technology? Oh right, we listened to the radio and misunderstood the lyrics. The good old days.

Broadway Producer Tom Kirdahy, Broadway Director (Mother and Sons) Sheryl Kaller and Playwright Dominique Morisseau are among the professionals who will join with Hauppauge High School’s theatre students on their mission to use their creative talents to become voices of social change. In 2012, the students in Hauppauge Theatre Teacher Ruth Pincus’ Advanced Acting Ensemble Class banded together to write and perform the “Anti-Bully Project” for the Hauppauge Middle School and others. The vignettes captured the attention of the Council for Prejudice Reduction, Tilles Center, RFK Foundation, among others, and led to the “Stage the Change, Theatre as a Social Voice” Conference, which will be held on Friday, November 21st, from 8 a.m. to 3
p.m., at the Tilles Center for Performing Arts in Brookville, New York. The 2nd Annual “Stage the Change” Conference will investigate methods for teaching students to become global citizens through creativity and performance. This day of learning, collaborating and inspiring is open to all Long Island high school and college theatre students, educators, guidance counselors, social awareness clubs, youth groups, parents and community members. “The success of last year’s ‘Stage the Change’ has shown us that this fullday event is an opportunity to engage young people and to inspire them to become voices of change,” described Pincus. “Bringing kindness and dignity to the forefront through theatre empowers students to make a difference in their own schools, communities and

Staging The Change
spent months digging through the rubble at the Twin Towers and have since passed away: Robert Zane (NYPD), Martin C. Simmons (FDNY), John McNamara (FDNY), John C. Devlin (Local 15 Operating Engineer), and Mark Gajewski (Local 30 Operational Engineers). These patriots teach us the simple, yet inspirational message of hope, and what it really means to be an American. Master of ceremonies included long-time Board of Education trustee, MaryJo Masciello, and Superintendent of Schools, Dr. Donald James. Community Relations consultant, Debbie Virga, is the organizer and driving
force behind the event that drew over 2,000 thousand attendees from our schools and the surrounding community. Commack High School senior Olivia DeSonni Ammaccapane sang the National Anthem. A 21-gun salute by the Marine Corps Huntington Detachment #792 was followed by the playing of “Taps” by Commack graduate Chris Toomey. Politicians representing our nation, state, and local constituencies as well as state, city, and local firefighter, police, and ambulance departments participated in the ceremony. Rabbi Telden gave the invocation and Deacon Lou Anatrella, the
College is unlike anything I’ve ever gone through. High school was four years of academic grinding, while college has proven to be pretty awesome. The workload isn’t too bad so far, which has allowed me to get involved on campus. I’m on the rugby team, I’ve joined a few clubs, and I’m writing for the school newspaper. College has not been all work and no play. The unfortunate moniker “Villanofun” has proven false, and I’m having the time of my life. I miss home, however. The new friends I’ve made here
are great and all, but nobody could replace my mom, dad and brother. They are the foundation to what will hopefully be my success. My mom and dad are the driving force in my life. I can’t wait until I see them during Parents’ Weekend, because somebody needs to do my laundry! Although I’m just kidding about the laundry, the idea that I miss the little things about home rings true. I miss my bed. I miss my car. I miss my old life. With that being said, I’m really liking the new life which I have formed here.
The kids on my floor are like family to me, and I’ve only been here a month. We are all in this together, and the communal sense of commitment has brought us closer together. I feel as though we know what each of us are going through, so bonds have become strengthened. The guys on my rugby team have been more than friendly as well. We are a team, and during games I can always expect them to have my back. I’m very excited to see what the rest of my four years of college have to offer.

benediction. The Commack School District is the only school district on Long Island that has continuously commemorated 9/11. A 9/11 Memorial Plaza was dedicated at the high school in 2012. The centerpiece is a monument topped with a section of steel from the Twin Towers. It is surrounded by walkways inlaid with engraved bricks donated by community and staff members and others across the country. There are benches where individuals can rest and reflect. In the words of Joe Daniels, President and CEO of the National September 11th Memorial & Museum, “Our spirits are sustained by what the terrorists could never destroy: our shared humanity. On this day, we remember how a nation became a family and how the world came together with limitless compassion.”

The Commack School District continued its tradition of paying tribute to the 3,000 men and women who lost their lives on September 11th, 2001, with the 13th annual Night of Remembrance. This year’s ceremony was dedicated to the 1,600 first responders who have died since that fatal attack from related illnesses, and their widows and children. Guest speakers included Congressman Steve Israel, Senator John Flanagan, and John Feal (FealGood Foundation), Board of Education President, Deborah Guber, and Vice President, Steve Hartman. Each speaker shared the touching stories of five first responders who willingly

for children and adults with autism and other developmental disabilities on Long Island, will be hosting its “DDI Walk, Run and Ride for Autism,” on Sunday, October 12th, at the Holtsville Ecology Center. The walk, run and motorcycle/classic car rally will help to promote community support for individuals with Autism and other developmental disabilities. “This event is all about coming together as a community and helping those who cannot help themselves,” said co-chair of the event Charley Hudson. “It is heartwarming to have talented individuals enthusiastically lend themselves to help benefit thousand of fellow Long Islanders.” This year’s event Grand Marshals are seven extraordinary people who for the second year
in a row, spent one week walking 128-miles from the Brooklyn Bridge to the Montauk Lighthouse in order to benefit DDI. Raising over $40,000 from both walks, Nathan Holmes, John Kenny, Morgan Zajkowski, Ellen McBurney, Peter Barker, Marita Rausch and Liam Kenny have proved to be worthy honorees. Registration for the 5K Fun Run will begin at 8 a.m. with the run to commence at 9 a.m. The scenic 5K Walk through Suffolk County’s Holtsville Ecology Park will feature activities for the entire family along the way, followed by a festival in the park complete with picnic lunch, music, games, a petting zoo and more. Registration for the walk begins at 9 a.m. and with the walk beginning at 11 a.m. The family activities will continue throughout the day until

EAGLE SCOUT PROJECT - A special Blessing of the Bell was performed by Father Michael on September 14th after the 9:30 a.m. Mass at the Parish of the Holy Cross, Nesconset. The non-working bell was removed from the bell tower and placed on a platform designed and constructed as part of Ian Hallam’s Eagle Scout Project. In addition to the bell platform, Ian created a beautiful garden around the bell. Ian was assisted by his family and members Troop 3. The bell can now be used again to celebrate the completion of Mass while parishioners can enjoy the beauty of the garden.
