The West Islip Breast Cancer Coalition
For Long Island, Inc.
The West Islip Breast Cancer Coalition for Long Island, Inc. (WIBCC) is a non-profit grassroots organization that was founded in 1992. They work to eradicate Breast Cancer and gynecological cancers. Their mission is to provide support services to women undergoing treatment and requiring postmastectomy care with their “Lead A Helping Hand” program, and to actively promote cancer and environmental awareness with education, advocacy and outreach throughout the community. To accomplish their mission, they focus on prevention, research, education, services, their Lend a Helping Hand program and awareness.
As like many other non-profit organizations, WIBCC holds various fundraising events throughout the year to gain awareness and collect funds in support of their mission. This September they are part of Stop & Shop’s Community Bag Program. WIBCC will receive a $1 donation every time a $2.50 reusable Community Bag is purchased at 400 Union Blvd in West Islip, unless otherwise directed by the customer through the Giving Tag attached to the bag. Additionally, they are participating in John’s Crazy Socks Giving Back Program, which started September 1st and will run through October 31st. John’s Crazy Socks is a fatherson social enterprise that was inspired by John Lee Cronin, a young man with Down Syndrome and his love of colorful and fun socks, or what he calls his “crazy socks”. John’s Crazy Socks has agreed to donate 10% of their net sales to WIBCC for every pair of socks purchased from their website, www. johnscrazysocks.com, when you enter the
charity code FG-WIBCC20.
Next month they will present Pink Flags of October, a month-long event to honor and remember those affected by Breast Cancer. Hundreds of pink flags will be placed at the entrance of Good Samaritan Hospital. You have the opportunity to purchase a ribbon in honor of or in memory of someone whose life has been affected by Breast Cancer. These ribbons will be tied to the flags and together the flags and ribbons will fly for the entire month of October. On Sunday, September 27 from 12-2PM at The Cancer Institute (111 Beach Drive in West Islip), there will be a ceremony to celebrate this month-long event, which will include health information, light refreshments and more. If you purchase a ribbon, you can attend the event and place the name of whom it is in honor of or in memory of right on the ribbon itself. If you cannot attend, it will be placed for you. If you would simply like to make a donation directly to this coalition, you can securely do so online at www.wibcc.org. Renovation projects that aim to conserve energy can save homeowners substantial amounts of money. Such projects don’t often require considerable effort or even sizable financial investments, which can make homeowners skeptical as to just how much they can save after completing the project. But the scale of a project may have little to do with how much homeowners will save. For example, the U.S. Department of Energy notes that a relatively effortless task like turning back a thermostat between 7° and 10° F for eight hours per day can save homeowners as much as $83 per year. A more labor-intensive task like planting shade trees saves homeowners an average of between $35 and $119 per year. When looking for ways to conserve energy around the house and save money, homeowners need not necessarily commit to expensive projects. Smithtown Central School District welcomed back students and staff on Sept. 8 for the official start of 2020-2021 school year. As the buses pulled into the schools, staff and administrators were on hand to greet the students. While the school day may look a bit different, students were eager to
learn and settle into their new routines. Kindergarten students explored their new buildings, as did the sixth and ninth grade students who moved up this year. Faculty members, staff and administrators were on hand to guide the students through the schools and help ease any first-day
fears. For many students, their first time back in the buildings since March was the perfect chance to reconnect with friends and classmates. By the end of the school day – whether virtually or in-person – students were poised for a successful year ahead.

Suffolk County Dennison Building Illuminated Blue In Honor of 9/11 Victims
For the first time, the north side of the Suffolk County Executive H. Lee Dennison Building in Hauppauge was illuminated in a blue glow in honor of the men and women lost on
September 11th. Legislator Steven J. Flotteron wanted this special recognition for the 178 lives lost in Suffolk County on that day. He was joined by other elected
officials, firefighters from Smithtown and East Brentwood Fire Departments, members of the Police Benevolent Association and community members to pay tribute.
Webelos Woods Is Coming To Town On Sunday October 4th And All Are Invited! The Matinecock District (Scouts BSA) will be hosting a jam-packed Webelos Woods scouting experience to share with all the local youths on Sunday October 4th at the Seminary of Immaculate Conception (440 West Neck Road, Huntington) from 10am-5pm. Normally an overnight event, the 2020 Webelos Woods will be a spectacular day event open to all local Boys and Girls with their adult supervisor at this Boy Scout event. Although it is the annual opportunity for giving the
10 and 11-year-old Webelos Scouts to figure out which Troop they are going to join, it is also a chance for the visitors to see what type of program Scouting BSA runs and things to look forward to if they join as Cub Scouts and then stick with the program. For the first time ever, Non-Scouters can join the fun with a free daypass (just turn in the card located on the back of the flyer at the Registration Tent). There will be Archery, Bridge Building, a “Monkey Bridge”, rocket launches,
catapults, Gaga Ball, scouting games and a lot more demonstrations and hands-on activities run by the Scouts of both Scouts BSA’s Boy and Girl Troops from the entire Matinecock District. The Matinecock District encompasses the Town of Huntington and the western section of the Smithtown Township. Drive-In Movie Series Continues the next round of movies, shown on the giant 52foot screen—the largest on Long Island—erected in the parking lot of the Smith Haven Mall, includes: 9/25: Pokémon Detective Pikachu, 7:15pm 9/25: Dumb and Dumber with the always hilarious duo, Jim Carrey and Jeff Daniels, 10:30pm 9/26: Batman (1989) starring Michael Keaton, 7:15pm 9/26: Batman (1966) starring the original Batman, Adam West, 10:30pm With the sun setting earlier in fall then it has all summer, the earlier movie start times will accommodate Long Island families searching for fun, and safe, entertainment. “We’re working on a fantastic lineup for fall, kicking off the season with a great lineup—including a special offer on a
Batman double feature on September 26th. Batman fans are in for a real treat--most of them, I’m sure, have never seen the 1966 version on the big screen,” added Powers. Lake Grove was among the first Long Island towns to offer post-quarantine entertainment for local residents. With sold-out showings, MOVIE LOT’s success confirmed that Long Islanders were ready for a fun and safe way to embrace the lack of entertainment options as shelter-in-place restrictions loosened. While drive-in theaters have been staging a comeback across the country, Starfish Junction has positioned itself as one of the leaders here on Long Island, owning the biggest pop-up drive-in screen, 52-feet, available locally. Future showings will include movies perfect for date nights, family fun nights, girl’s
night out, sing-alongs, and classic films. There are a limited number of tickets available for each showing. Tickets are on sale now ($40 per carload for early shows, $30 per carload for late night shows). The special Batman Double Feature tickets are $55 per carload. All tickets must be purchased online in advance at the MOVIE
LOT website to adhere to the promise of contactless processing. Ticketholders are permitted to bring their own food and snacks to enjoy during the show. Attendees may also consider Smith Haven Mall restaurants for curbside pick up before filing into the lot for the movie. Portable restrooms will be available for use.
