Ushering in the Equinox By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Ok, now it’s official. Autumn can commence. Why? Because today is the actual autumnal equinox, the moment all those fall fanatics have been eagerly anticipating since, well, probably since last autumn. I know September 1st is the unofficial introduction of all things pumpkin spice, but, believe it or not, there are a few more factors to consider when introducing a new season. For instance, cooler weather, the start of football and “Sunday Fundays,” playoff baseball, fall TV premieres… all things that were absent as of September 1st. And, while Halloween merchandise
has been on the shelves since July, guess what? It’s still over a month away. And Christmas – don’t even get me started on that. Three months to go. Three MONTHS. Plenty of time. No need to make those lists and check them twice quite yet. And yet… as I write this, the temperature sits at a positively summery 81º - perfect for pumpkin picking, hayrides and corn mazes… if all those things took place on a beach. But no worries, the season is still young – plenty of time for the autumn chill to settle in and the boots and scarves to be dragged out of the closet for that first brisk afternoon walk through the fallen foliage.
‘Tis the season of fall festivals and Oktoberfest celebrations, of raking and home improvement projects, of toasty evenings spent curled up with a (pumpkin) spiced latte and a book. Sure, it has its benefits. If you like that sort of thing. Me, I’ll be the one walking along the shoreline at the beach, camera (or iPhone) in hand, trying to capture the perfect autumnal sunset shot. I’ll get into the spirit eventually. Maybe once October hits. I might even check out the Halloween merchandise. And start making my Christmas list… Nah, who am I kidding. That’s what Black Friday is for.

The Firemen’s Association of the State of New York (FASNY) has announced an October 2nd, application deadline for tuition reimbursement through their historic educational initiative, the Higher Education Learning Plan (HELP). This statewide community college tuition reimbursement program is geared towards recruiting and retaining volunteer firefighters throughout New York State. “The FASNY HELP program has benefitted hundreds of dedicated firefighters serving communities across the State. In addition to helping meet the staffing needs of local departments, a better educated firefighter is simply a better firefighter. For the student volunteers and the fire departments, this is the very definition of a ‘win-win’ situation,” said FASNY President

The reimbursement is in exchange for maintaining good grades and fulfilling service requirements in one of New York’s volunteer fire companies. There is no restriction on the type of academic courses that the HELP student-volunteer can pursue, either on a fulltime or part-time basis. FASNY HELP also covers online courses taken through Empire State College. FASNY HELP funds can be utilized for tuition costs incurred in the Fall 2015 and Spring 2016 semesters. The Long Island Game Farm will be going into hibernation on Tuesday, October 13th, but the animals aren’t going anywhere just yet. Instead, the zoo has increased its Facebook coupon to $4 off admission and has updated its fall hours and show schedule for the remainder of the season. Educator Earns State Award Smithtown Central School District physical education teacher Helen Flynn has been selected by the New York State Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance as a recipient of its 2015 Secondary Physical Education Teacher of the Year Award. Flynn, who has been teaching physical education in Smithtown for 13 years, currently works at Smithtown High School
East and Mt. Pleasant Elementary School, Additionally, she has been the program coordinator for the Athletes Helping Athletes Club at HSE for the last seven years, as well as serves as the varsity field hockey head coach at HSW and assistant varsity coach of both the HSE winter and spring girls track and field teams. “Ms. Flynn has distinguished herself as a leader in her profession,” said Superintendent
of Schools Dr. James Grossane. “This recognition is evidence of her dedication to professional excellence. She has demonstrated leadership and has a reputation for exemplary work. ” Flynn will be honored at the Jay B. Nash Awards dinner on November 20th at the Turning Stone Convention Center in Verona, New York.
Earning AP Recognition More than 400 current and recently graduated Smithtown School District students have been recognized by the College Board as Advanced Placement Scholars. These awards, which are divided upon several categories, were bestowed upon the students based on their exceptional achievement on the national exams. • 152 students qualified for the AP Scholar Award by receiving a score of 3 or higher on three or more exams. • 81 students received
the AP Scholar with Honor Award by earning an average grade of 3.25 on all AP exams taken and grades of 3 or higher on four or more of those exams. • 148 students qualified for the AP Scholar with Distinction Award by earning an average grade of at least 3.5 on all AP exams taken and grades of 4 or higher on five or more of these exams. • In addition, 27 Class of 2015 graduates
received the highest designation of National AP Scholar by earning an average grade of 4 or higher on all AP exams taken and grades of 4 or higher on eight or more of these exams. AP courses completed with a score of 3 or higher on the final exam afford students the opportunity to earn college credit. At 100 years of age, local Islandia women Vida Hopkins Tallon is still full of life! Recently, Vida was joined by Legislator Leslie
Kennedy in celebration of her 100th birthday. While attending, Leslie provided Vida with a special gift! Vida was awarded with an official proclamation, commemorating her for her 100 years of a long, healthy, and amazing life. Vida Tallon was born in Queens, in September of 1915; she raised a family of five with her husband Robert Tallon. Throughout her life, Vida has resided in a variety of places throughout the country, including New York, California, and North Carolina. She spent a majority of her professional career as a
Hauppauge School District is pleased to announce that High School Senior Reah Vasilakopoulos was named a Semifinalist in the 61th Annual National Merit Scholarship Competition. This academically talented student will now have an opportunity to continue in the competition to qualify for about 7,400 National Merit Scholarships worth more than $32 million that will be offered next spring. A National Merit Scholarship Semifinalist must have an outstanding academic record throughout high school, be endorsed and recommended by a high school official, write an essay and earn SAT scores
that confirm their earlier performance on the qualifying test. To advance to the finals, Vasilakopoulos and Hauppauge High School must submit a detailed scholarship application in which they provide information about her academic record, participation in school and community activities, demonstrated leadership abilities, employment and honors and awards received. The National Merit Scholarship Competition Finalists will be announced in February 2016. The Competition began with about 1.5 million juniors in about 22,000 high schools
nationwide who took the 2014 Preliminary SAT/ National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/ NMSQT), which served as an initial screen of program entrants. Those who scored the highest on the test advanced to the semifinals. Throughout the farewell concert, campers clapped along and played tambourines, maracas and drums. A crowd favorite was Ms. Crean’s leading of a rendition of “Down by the Bay,” during which the campers lent new lyrics to the popular American folk song. At the end of the farewell concert, the group invited Ms. Costello to the center of the performance area to receive thanks from the campers, who sang to her in appreciation. Afterwards, everyone in attendance rose to sing, dance and enjoy some delicious fresh-baked cookies. Mr. Licitra is the singer and keyboardist for Jack’s Waterfall and currently teaches a Musical Explorers class for young children at his studio, Arts Pharmacy in Sayville. Ms. Crean studies Music Therapy at Molloy College and expressed that “music can really change you. On September 2nd, music instructor Jack Licitra and assistant teacher Anne Crean brought their music enrichment program to Camp Pa-Qua-Tuck for one final round of singing and dancing. Supported by funds raised during off-season events, such as Bradstock, the duo was initially invited to the camp by Camp Director Bridget Costello, who had seen Mr. Licitra perform at other events. The program focused not only on the music, but on the means by which the campers could perform. Throughout the summer, the instructors and camp counselors worked with the campers to create and practice on instruments made from re-purposed materials, such as art dowels and five-gallon paint buckets for drumming and plastic bottles filled with rice that served as clackers and maracas. Citing a camper who spent her time during the music program creating beautiful works of art, Mr. Licitra explained how music has a positive effect on everyone. He feels this is especially true of disabled children and young adults, like those at Camp Pa-Qua-Tuck, who might not otherwise be able to communicate their joy and enthusiasm. He encouraged campers to let their “inside voice out” and said that “every person

Hauppauge School District students and staff remembered the men and women who lost their lives on September 11th, 2001 by wearing red, white and blue and displaying their patriotism throughout the
District. Later this month, on September 26th, 2015, Hauppauge School District will hold their Inaugural Patriots Month Walk by collectively walking 911 miles to raise money
and awareness for the First Responders’ Feal Good Foundation. The Walk’s goal is to bring the community together to honor the men and women who helped during 9/11 and its aftermath.

BLOOD DRIVE A SUCCESS - Legislator Leslie Kennedy was out for blood at her seventh blood drive this year, and this time she was in her home town of Nesconset at the Nesconset Day Fair. The Federal Emergency Management Agency has extended the deadline for flood insurance policyholders to submit their Hurricane Sandy Claims for review. The last day to submit claims is now October 15th, 2015. The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development announced today that any additional flood insurance proceeds up to $20,000 will not be treated as duplicative. Federal agencies cannot provide disaster assistance for losses covered by insurance. HUD’s announcement stated that “this will eliminate the need for HUD grantees to reclaim assistance from these households or to repay those funds through non-federal sources. To date, three out of four National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) claimants have received less than $20,000 in additional compensation from FEMA and will not face any possible repayment.” Roy Wright, FEMA’s Deputy Associate Administrator for Insurance and Mitigation, encouraged policyholders to call FEMA and request a review if they believe their claims were underpaid for any reason. “FEMA remains committed to making sure that every policyholder gets every dollar they are owed under their flood insurance policy. Already, thousands of policyholders have contacted us to have their claims reviewed and we have begun providing funds to those who were due additional payments on their claim,” Wright said. “We are hopeful that HUD’s action to provide relief to the vast majority of those who are concerned about potential duplicative benefits will encourage even more policyholders who may have been initially reluctant to enter the process to do so,” Wright said. “In light of HUD’s decision to simplify this review and provide relief, we are extending the claims review deadline until October 15th. We hope by extending the deadline we are addressing any remaining concerns some may have about entering the claims review process. The review process we have established is designed to be simple, fair, and accessible without paid legal assistance. FEMA is dead set on restoring trust in this important program and no one should be discouraged from having their claim reviewed.” Policyholders can call the NFIP’s Hurricane Sandy claims center at 866.337.4262 from 8 a.m.
to 8 p.m. Eastern Daylight Time (EDT), Monday through Friday to request a review. It is important to have your policy number and insurance company name when you call. Policyholders also can go online to www.fema. gov/hurricane-sandynfip-claims to download a form requesting a review. The downloaded form can be filled out and e-mailed to FEMAsandyclaimsreview@ fema.dhs.gov or faxed to 202.646.7970 to begin the review process. Back to School Blast As a final summer hurrah, the Long Island Game Farm - Wildlife Park & Children’s Zoo (LIGF) hosted its Back to School Blast on Saturday, August 29th. Hundreds of visitors, including some from across the country, traveled to the park to experience reduced admission prices, face painting and all of the zoo’s traditional exhibits and shows. The guests also were presented with giveaways, such as notebooks from Staples for the first 100 guests and
coupon books from Tanger Outlets Riverhead. The mall also gave away one $100 shopping spree to Solomon Yakubov, of Fresh Meadows. He also received a stuffed giraffe courtesy of LIGF and in honor of the zoo’s mascot, Clifford the Giraffe. The 25-acre Game Farm features interactive animal experiences, in which guests are able to get up close and personal with their favorite animals. This year features its newest attractions: the
Camel Encounter, where guests are able to handfeed camels and learn fun facts from staff, and the Priceless Parrot Encounter at the Discovery Center. Suffolk Victims Remembered Suffolk County’s 178 victims of the September 11th, 2001 terrorist attacks were remembered yesterday in a ceremony at the Gardens of Remembrance, a memorial site dedicated to 9/11 victims at the Armed Forces Plaza in Hauppauge. Suffolk County Legislature Presiding Officer DuWayne Gregory joined Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone and other county legislators in reading the victims’ names.
“On the 14th anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks, we remember the thousands who perished, the tremendous acts of bravery that followed, and the families who continue to mourn the loss of their loved ones,” said Presiding Officer Gregory. “We grieve for all the victims, including the 178 who were Suffolk County’s own. PROCLAMATION AWARDED - Suffolk County Legislators Steve Stern, Lou D’Amaro and William R. Spencer awarded a proclamation to Second Precinct Inspector Edward Brady upon his retirement from the Suffolk County Police Department (SCPD). Inspector Brady, a graduate of St. John’s University, graduated from the Police Academy in 1979 and joined the Second Precinct that year. Rising through the ranks, he served throughout the County, and returned to the Second Precinct in 2009 as Commanding Officer, where he has served with distinction, focusing on community based policing, open communication with residents and enhancing public safety.
