On Wednesday, September 7th at the General Meeting of the Suffolk County Legislature, Legislator Sarah Anker and Legislator Kate Browning honored Nancy NowaskiRoesler for her altruism and community service. Over the summer, Nancy organized two fundraisers that collectively raised over $36,000 for families in need. In June, she organized a Chinese auction fundraiser which raised over $20,000 for the Bonacasa family. Deborah Bonacasa’s husband, Staff Sergeant Louis Bonacasa, was killed by terrorist bombers in Afghanistan.

In July, only one month later, Nancy organized a spaghetti dinner fundraiser for the Brown family and raised over $16,000 to assist them with medical bills after suffering serious injuries in a car accident. “Nancy truly embodies the spirit of generosity and selflessness. She has gone above and beyond to help those in need and I am honored to recognize her hard work and dedication to the community,” said Legislator Anker. “Nancy is an incredibly giving and generous person that has done so much to help her fellow residents in need,” stated Legislator

Browning. “I was proud to join Legislator Anker in recognizing her service to her community and neighbors.” Nancy has been a lifetime resident of the Longwood community and has a long history of community service. She has been active with the Ridge Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary, Ridge Civic Association, church committees, Longwood PTA, Longwood Veterans Memorial Committee, and the Longwood Victory Garden. Looking for Perfection It’s funny how many different forms the term “friendship” can take on these days. Gone is the time when having a new “best friend” every year of elementary school was the norm, replaced instead by a handful of fairly close friends and an infinite number of what can only be classified as acquaintances; those you may travel in similar circles with but, once the circle is broken, severed is the superficial connection forged as well. Even among those close friends, there are breakdowns. There are those who you may only see sporadically to grab dinner or catch a movie with, yet when you do get together, it’s like no time has elapsed at all. Then there are the friends you embark on daylong

adventures with, aimlessly wandering the streets of New York City, the beaches of Long Island and everything in between. These are the days of memories made, of endless photographs snapped… the days you will fondly recall years from now, and smile. I recently came across a quote: “Photographs are proof that once, even if just for a heartbeat, everything was perfect.” Not only does it speak to my personal love of photography as a whole, but to that notion of reflecting upon moments and savoring them. Sure, it is equally important to be present in the moment and experience it fully; but pictures have the ability to preserve an instant in a way that memory alone cannot always fulfill. Hence, my albums full of fun and silliness, of candid

moments and scenic shores. Of friends, both the lifelong variety and those who may only make a guest appearance along the way. And of course, Buddy, my very special finned friend, who holds a unique place in my heart the way that only a pet can. He may be contained in a bowl, but his personality shines through, and the connection is just as real as those established with friends of the “Human” variety. Month after month, I celebrate his “birthday,” the anniversary of his time in my home, along with the standard holidays that we have been fortunate to share with him. Friends may come and go, and the memories may fade over time; but in the many heartbeats in between, perfection can be found. You need only know where to look.

Applications are now being accepted through November 30th, 2016. Residents can download the application through the Community Development tab on the County’s website, www.suffolkcountyny. gov. Applications will be accepted by mail only and can also be requested from the Community Development Office at 631.853.5705. Bellone stressed that qualified Suffolk County residents must purchase a home within the consortium area, they will have 90 days from the date of issuance of the Purchase Certificate, to submit a fully executed Contract of Sale to the Community Development Office or 300 days to

SCHOOL SUPPLY DRIVE - The Dolan Family Health Center held its 12th annual school supply drive on August 25th, providing backpacks and school supplies to 180 children who are patients at the health center. Funds for the drive are raised by employees at the health center and donations were provided by Astoria Bank, BAE Systems, the Meadowbrook Women’s Initiative, Park Shore Country Day Camp and individual donors.

As Suffolk County gears up to again partner with Catholic Health Services (CHS) – the Medal of Honor Title Sponsor on the Second Annual Marathon and Freedom Fest 2016, volunteers including physicians, nurses, advanced practice professionals, physical and respiratory therapists and more are preparing to again assist as race medicine providers for the 26.2 mile race, the half marathon and 5K challenge. The race, which will start and end in Patchogue Village, will take place at 8 a.m. on Sunday, October 30th, and is expected to draw runners from across the country and around the world. This year, the 5K challenge was added to attract additional runners of all abilities. Some 3,500 runners participated in last year’s marathon raising approximately $160,000 to support local veteran’s

Rock the Socks

The Hauppauge Varsity Football team’s season opener helped bring awareness and raise funds for “Rock the Socks.” The charity was formed in February 2016 by Hauppauge resident and former student-athlete Nick Cadmus – whose daughter Makenzie was born with Epidermolysis Bullosa (EB) – a rare, incurable disease where skin can blister, erode or slough off from relatively minor injuries or any type of friction.

“Rock the Socks was born in the second or third week of Makenzie’s life when we re-bandage her three to four times daily. Makenzie initially “threw” her bandages frequently, causing a vicious cycle of pain management drugs, feeding and bandaging,” described Cadmus. One of her fantastic nurses from the Morgan Stanley Children’s Hospital, suggested using socks as a retention bandage to help keep her bandages in place.

The socks also provided a soft outer layer in case Makenzie hit herself.” The socks eventually captured the eyes of many and prompted the family to say: “rock those socks, girl” – the seed that grew into the Rock the Socks campaign. The Hauppauge Varsity Football Team and their fans were proud to display the new Royal Blue “Rock the Socks” they purchased in honor of Makenzie Cadmus and with the hope that one day a cure will be found for this disease.

As parents and school-bound children throughout Long Island organized school supplies and struggled to get to

bed at a decent hour the night before the first day of school, Parents Association volunteers from Deer Park’s Saints Cyril &

Methodius School were hard at work spreading joy and comfort to the homes of each of the school’s incoming Kindergarten students. They took the time to pitch welcome signs for each member of SSCM’s Class of 2025 and here are just a few of the smiles they brought to the students’ faces. No first day jitters for these youngsters, as they donned their brand new school shoes and backpacks and headed off to the start of their academic careers at Saints Cyril and Methodius. Here’s to a successful year to all students as the year ramps up to full speed ahead!

In Remembrance

On the fifteenth anniversary of the terrible attacks on this nation, many took the time to remember the lives of those who were lost to this senseless act of terrorism. Here on Long Island, a short commute away from New York City, our communities were particularly hurt by this tragedy, we lost many lives, those who had worked in the towers, and first responders who worked to evacuate the towers. To this very day, we continue to lose lives today due to the illnesses contracted by first responders as a result of their work at Ground Zero.

Amid the Nesconset Day street fair celebrations, Legislator Leslie Kennedy took the opportunity to reflect on the lives lost, and many people who selflessly gave their lives to save others. During the festivities of Nesconset Day, there was an opportunity to pay tribute to our lost souls at the 9/11 Memorial Ceremony hosted at the Nesconset Gazebo Park. “Fifteen years have gone by, but that does not make it easier for those who are still coping with the loss of loved ones. In the years since this attack, New York has built stronger, and our

communities are stronger, but it doesn’t negate the heartache we feel for our lost friends and family, and the many brave men and women who were the first to respond to this attack. Legislator Leslie Kennedy was joined by other leaders in mourning the attacks on 9/11 such as Congressman Lee Zeldin, Assemblyman Michael Fitzpatrick, Smithtown Town Clerk Vinny Puleo and Comptroller John Kennedy. Other community groups such as the 9/11 Responders Remembered board were in attendance as well to pay their respect.

On the 15th anniversary of the most horrific attack on America in recent memory, Legislator Kennedy was out in full force to help collect blood for New York’s blood banks at the Nesconset Day Fair on Smithtown Boulevard. With the help of one blood bus from New York Blood Center, Legislator Kennedy, staff and volunteers helped to usher in blood donors. On a day to remember all those who were lost, many were eager to do a good work and give lifesaving blood to those who are in need. All those who were gracious enough to give blood received two free Mets tickets to go see last Year’s National League

Champs play at Citi Field. While New York Blood Center’s phlebotomists collected the blood, Legislator Kennedy had Boy Scout volunteers help drum up business for the blood bus onsite. The one blood bus was able to screen forty-nine people for blood donation by the end of the day, the whole staff working hard to accommodate all the donors. “This day in particular I think about how we were attacked as a nation, and the way it particularly affected many here on Long Island who worked in New York City. But when I see the goodness of all those who have donated, I am happy that we are

a giving people, I want to thank all those who donated blood, and those who donated time to make this blood drive possible.” said Legislator Kennedy. Scholarship Semifinalist Hauppauge School District is pleased to announce that High School Senior Rebecca Proscia was named a Semifinalist in the 62nd Annual National Merit Scholarship Program. This academically talented student will now have an opportunity to continue in the competition to qualify for about 7,500 National Merit Scholarships worth more than $33 million that will be offered in spring 2017. To advance to the finals of the competition, Proscia and Hauppauge High School must submit a detailed scholarship

application in which they provide information about her academic record, participation in school and community activities, demonstrated leadership abilities, employment and honors and awards received. She additionally must earn SAT scores what confirm her earlier performance on the qualifying exam. The National Merit Scholarship Finalists will be announced in February 2017. Approximately 1.6 million high school students from about 22,000 high schools nationwide took the 2015 Preliminary SAT/National Merit

Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT), which served as an initial screen of program entrants. Those students who scored the highest on the test advanced to the semifinals. This comes out to less than one percent of those who entered the contest. “The entire Hauppauge School District community is honored to congratulate Rebecca Proscia on being named a National Merit Scholarship Competition Semifinalist,” stated Hauppauge High School Principal Christine O’Connor.

VICTIMS REMEMBERED - The bell tolled 178 times, once for each name read aloud at a ceremony this morning marking the 15th anniversary of the September 11th, 2001 terrorist attacks. Standing in front of the county’s 9/11 memorial in Hauppauge, Suffolk County Legislature Presiding Officer DuWayne Gregory joined County Executive Steve Bellone and other legislators in remembering the Suffolk residents who died in the attacks on the World Trade Center 15 years ago. After each of the county’s 178 victims’ names was read aloud, the sound of a bell echoed across the garden, where many had gathered to honor the victims and pray for their families.

The family celebrated the dedication ceremony and completion of their home build on September 7th with Habitat Suffolk staff, board members, house sponsors, government officials and volunteers who helped build their home.

Fall Event Returns Camp Pa-Qua-Tuck welcomes back The Rotary Club of the Moriches and its annual Oktoberfest on September 23rd to 25th, rain or shine. Germanthemed food and drink festival celebrating the fall season will be held at the Rotary building, on Chet Swezey Road, near the camp. The times for Oktoberfest are as follows: September 23rd, 6 p.m. to 11 p.m. September 24, noon to 11 p.m. September 25, noon to 6 p.m. The three-day event will include German food,

beer gardens, a carnival, vendors, live German entertainment and more. Admission is $10 to enter the beer garden (ages 21 and over). Children under the age of 21 are admitted free. Admission includes a ticket good for one complimentary beer or soft drink. All proceeds will benefit Camp Pa-QuaTuck. Camp Pa-Qua-Tuck is a resident summer camp for children and young adults ages six to 21 with physical and developmental special needs. Its mission is to help these children to achieve equality, dignity, and

maximum independence through a safe and quality program of camping, recreation, and education. Throughout the program, campers participate in many activities, such as arts and crafts, talent shows, cook-outs, swimming and boating. READING OF THE NAMES - Suffolk County Legislator Tom Barraga, Major General N.Y.G – U.S.M.C. RET. recently participated in the reading of the names of residents of Suffolk County who lost their lives on September 11th, 2001 at the Twin Towers. General Barraga spent approximately two months on active duty in Manhattan immediately following the attack with the combined military force of 2,500 troops that made up the “42nd Joint Task Force Rainbow Hope.”
