The Long Island Chapter of Autism Speaks, the world’s leading autism science and advocacy organization, will hold its 2017 Long Island Autism Speaks Walk event on Sunday, October 1st, at Jones Beach - Field 5. Proceeds from Long Island 18th annual walk will support Autism Speaks’ mission to promote solutions, across the spectrum and throughout the life span, for the needs of individuals with autism and their families. Autism Speaks Walk is the world’s largest fundraising event to enhance the lives of people with autism today and accelerate a spectrum of solutions for tomorrow. The events are powered by the love of parents, grandparents, children, siblings, friends, relatives, and support providers for the special people in their lives living with autism. Funds raised help fuel innovative research and make connections to critical lifelong supports and services. In recent years, Autism Speaks has made a significant impact in the Long Island area. Through its Local Grants Program, Autism Speaks has provided funding to innovative local service providers. They include: Long Island Advocacy Center, Inc., Long Island Children’s Museum, Adelphi University-Bridges to Adelphi Program and The Family Center for Autism – to name few for a total grant investment of $60,000 in 2016. “Long Island Autism Speaks Walk is helping

It was all smiles around the district as students and staff at Smithtown Central School District kicked off the 2017-2018 school year on September 7th. Loaded with supplies, elementary students filed into their buildings, some for the first time, to meet their new teachers and connect with friends. Students at the middle schools and high schools

navigated through the hallways, checking their schedules and locating their lockers. During the summer months, incoming kindergartners met their new classmates and saw their new buildings. The three middle schools also held sixth-grade orientations to help newcomers get acquainted to their surroundings.

Ninth-grade students at Smithtown High Schools East and West also received their schedules and lockers and toured their respective buildings prior to the start of the school year. After reconnecting with their friends throughout the week, students began to ease into their new routines and settled in for a productive school year.

Online Auction Begins The Village of Mastic Beach, New York, has begun a complete village dissolution of all government assets including Village owned real estate. The decision comes after the referendum on November 16th, 2016, when the residents of Mastic Beach voted to dissolve the village; citing rising taxes as the most pressing issue pushing voters towards dissolution. The liquidation of assets will be conducted through a series of continuous government online auctions. All sales will be coordinated and overseen by Buffalo, New York based online auction company Auctions International. The auctions will be ongoing and continue until December 20th, 2017 or until all items have been sold. “As of January 1st, the Village will no longer exist,” cites Mayor of Mastic

Beach, Robert Miller. “Trucks, automobiles, heavy equipment, landscaping tools, mowers office equipment, and all village owned real estate are among the items people can bid on between now and end of December. The money collected from this auction will go to pay any debt owed of the people of Village of Mastic Beach so that we return to the Town of Brookhaven free of debt. The first group of items up for auction were posted September 7th of this year, and currently available for viewing and bidding on the Auctions International website www. auctionsinternational.com They are: public works construction equipment, double wide office trailer, office equipment, park benches and a lighted flag pole. In addition a Village wide real estate online auction including the

Village Hall and Village DPW building, a single family home and all of their surrounding property will commence October through November of this year. “Our goal through this dissolution is to help the Village get the best returns,” states RJ Klisiewicz, Operations Manager of Auctions International. “This is a great opportunity for community residents to bid and purchase village assets, some of which may hold sentimental value such as the park benches and flag pole. with Jamie Lynn Ryan Autumn’s Eve And with that, summer’s final swan song is upon us, as the autumnal air seems to have taken up residence across this long island that we call home. Some will say the summer months flew by in the blink of an eye; others will say they dragged on unbearably. How drastic are the differences in perception from one person to another. It’s funny how things seem to move in fast forward once the school year gets underway. Halloween decorations have been out in full force for weeks, with Christmas not far behind. That spring cleaning that we’ve been putting off until fall is now begging for our attention. As the leaves begin to turn, can outdoor cleanups be far behind as well? In the entertainment world, gone are the evenings of summer concerts under the stars, replaced instead by nights spent in front of

the television as many of our favorite shows return from hiatus. That baseball season which once seemed endless on opening day in April is now nearing its final stretch, as playoff pictures begin to take shape. All this, while football season takes over, and each Sunday’s activities become dictated by the game schedule of your favorite team. Soon enough, all roads heading eastward will be jammed with traffic as the masses scramble to take advantage of each beautiful autumn weekend. Pumpkin picking, apple picking, hayrides, corn mazes… so much to accomplish in so little time. And yet, there is always precisely the same amount of time. It’s all in how we choose to use it. A good family friend of mine recently commented that we all tend to live as though we have this list of obligations

to complete, rather than taking a step back and simply experiencing each moment as it happens. There is very little we actually have to do; in fact, almost nothing is required within a particular time frame. And so, we can afford to relax a bit, to take our time transitioning, whether it is from one season to the next or something larger and more significant to our personal lives. So, while the calendar may indicate autumn just a few days from now, that doesn’t mean we need to give up enjoying the warmth of the sun, or throw away our remaining summer plants in favor of mums and pumpkins. All in good time. Autumn is a season of transition in itself, a cross-section of weather and activities, even fashion. A season of plenty. Plenty to appreciate. Plenty to embrace. Plenty to enjoy.

But not for me, it’s life’s rewards The patient recovered and is doing well They returned to follow up to report, “life is swell” So that you know Life’s rewards come in Many forms “It’s not always about the dough”

Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone today announced the official launch of the “Experience the North Fork by Trolley” shuttle service that will operate for 10 straight Saturdays beginning September 9th and running through November 11th. The scheduled service will be divided into two service phases: Phase one will service the Greenport loop from September 9th to October 7th, and Phase two will serve the Mattituck-Peconic loop from October 14th to November 11th. “We are excited to introduce this new experiential trolley service on the North Fork to serve our residents and

LI Hops, a 43-acre farm located in the North Fork wine region of Long Island will again host the Long Island Fresh Hop Fest - the largest fresh hop fest on the east coast - on Saturday, September 23rd. Lending a Helping Hand With so much loss and devastation left in Hurricane Harvey’s wake leaving Texas and its residents a long road of rebuilding and recovery, Homes By Mara Realty Founder, Owner and President Mara Navaretta of Woodbury and her team of agents have launched their own public Hurricane Harvey Non-Perishable Food & Paper Goods Collection Drive. Sixth-graders in Michelle Labuski’s class at Great Hollow Middle School in the Smithtown Central School District got to know their fellow classmates during the first week of school by engaging in a cellphone activity. Each student received a cardboard cutout of a blank

cellphone. Each phone had a space for nine apps and students chose what apps they wanted to put on their phone. In an effort to get to know each other better, each app featured something personal about the student. For example, under the Yelp app, students wrote their

favorite restaurant. Under the contacts, students wrote about a person they’d like to meet or their family members. Twitter was 140 characters about themselves and Facebook was a picture from the first day of school. Students then shared their cellphone interests with each other.

Supporting the Fight At the end of August, the Smithtown Central School District’s girls varsity swim team participated in an annual fundraiser to help raise money and awareness for cancer research through the Swim Across America organization - this year joined by Harborfields Central School District’s varsity girls team.

Together, more than 40 swimmers raised $4,000 for the cause, and both teams committed to the event again next year. Swimmers were thanked and congratulated by Suffolk County Legislator William Spencer. “Your commitment and support will make a meaningful difference in the lives of

those affected by cancer,” Spencer said. In addition to the swim itself, a scientist from Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory attended the event and spoke with the participating swimmers to explain the importance of continuous support and TEAM LEADERS - Harborfields team leader Hannah Spencer and coach Kiri research for cancer. Mr. Feal is a 9/11 responder himself, who has fought long and hard for medical benefits and support for those whose work in the aftermath of 9/11 resulted in permanent injury and illness. John invited all attendees to hold hands as a sign of unity and remembrance, and to walk the track, meeting at the illuminated red, white, and blue representation of the Twin Towers. Wreaths were presented to the Commack families who lost loved ones and displayed by the reflection pools and Twin Towers.

Each person received a daisy to add to the two reflection pools as they walked the track. The day was designated as a “Day of Volunteerism” encouraging the public to extend acts of kindness to others. Nonperishable food items were collected for those affected by the hurricanes to be distributed by Island Harvest. State, County, Huntington, Smithtown, and Commack officials and legislators were on hand, as well as Suffolk County Police Commissioner Tim Sini, and Asst. Commissioner John Barry. After the closing prayer, given by Deacon Louis Antrella, the SCPD flew a helicopter overhead as Commack’s own Tribute in Lights shone skyward. Music was provided by former Commack High School student, Anthony Funcheon, and parent Joe Zogbi. Chris Toomey, also a Commack graduate, closed the ceremony playing Taps on his bugle.

Hundreds of Commack Community members and students gathered for the 16th annual 9/11 ceremony, held on the Heroes Memorial Track at Commack High School. This year’s remembrance was an interactive event, with the crowd and officials walking the track to remember those lost and those who are still suffering mentally and physically from the tragedy of 9/11/2001. The ceremony began with the sound of a mournful bagpipe leading the Marine Corps. League Huntington Detachment and NYPD color guards onto the track, followed by an opening prayer from Rabbi Mendel Teldon. As is done each year, a bell was rung to represent the planes hitting the towers, the strike on the Pentagon, the plane that was crashed in Pennsylvania, and in memory of the brave and the victims. The 3rd annual Outreach/ John Brower, Jr. Foundation 5K Walk at Jones Beach to raise funds and awareness on the opioid crisis on Long Island will be held Saturday, October 7th, beginning at 10 a.m. The event is held each year to honor the memory of John Brower, Jr., who died in 2014 of an opiate overdoes at age 25. Proceeds from the walk support Outreach, the Queens and Long Island-based organization dedicated to helping teens and adults fight drug and alcohol addiction. The parents and children of John Brower, Jr. formed the foundation to heighten

awareness about substance abuse and to help raise funds to end the drug epidemic that has had an adverse effect on Long Island. After being introduced to Outreach shortly after their son’s passing, the Browers were impressed by the organization’s dedication to help those struggling with addiction. They decided to target all the group’s fundraising for the agency. To date, the Brower family has donated more than $39,000 to Outreach. “The Brower family is one of too many Long Island families who have experienced

the heartbreak of opiate addiction,” said Kathleen Riddle, president of Outreach. “We join the Browers in their mission to do all we can to raise awareness for teens and young adults so additional families do not have to lose a loved one to substance abuse. The Brower family has been tremendously generous and devoted to the cause. We are enormously thankful for their support.” “It’s been more than four years since we lost our son,” said John Brower, Sr., “but his memory is with us every day as is our determination to continue fighting addiction.

Tips for College Applicants Choosing where to apply to college is a big decision that can affect the lives of young students for years to come. The college application process can have more immediate impacts as well, as U.S. News reported that the average college application fee was $41 in the spring of 2015, meaning families can expect to spend several hundred dollars just to apply to colleges. The rising cost of a college education coupled with a competitive job market only serve to emphasize the importance high school students and their families must place on deciding where to apply. The following are a handful of strategies families can employ to make students’ decisions regarding where to apply to college a little easier. Don’t hesitate from applying to a dream school. The Princeton Review defines dream schools as those colleges or universities where

a student’s academic credentials fall in the low end or below the school’s averages for students accepted the year prior. But even students who meet the academic requirements established by their dream schools may be hesitant to apply to such schools because of the cost of tuition. Students whose academic records fall just short of their dream schools’ criteria or whose financial means make attending their dream schools seem impossible should still apply to those schools. Financial aid might be available, and schools might look at more than just academic performance, particularly for students whose grades fall just short of last years’ average accepted applicants. Don’t be deterred by application fees. Stanford University’s application fee for 2017 was $90, making the school one of the more expensive colleges or universities to apply to. But

many schools, including Stanford, waive those fees for certain applicants. Students should not expect each school to waive their application fees, but they also should not let those fees deter them from applying, especially if they meet or exceed the application requirements. Choose the right safety school. Safety schools are those colleges or universities where applicants’ academic credentials make them a near certainty to gain admission. But when choosing safety schools, students should pick schools that they would enjoy attending. Applying to a school simply because you can get in and not because you want to enroll there can make for an unpleasant college experience should you ultimately end up attending that college.

Balancing Extracurricular Activities

Many high schools, colleges and universities emphasize their goals of producing well-rounded students. Extracurricular activities teach students important life lessons, provide them opportunities to socialize and often stimulate their minds and bodies in ways that differ from the stimulation provided in the classroom. Data from the U.S. Census Bureau states that, in 2014, 57 percent of children between the ages of 6 and 17 participate in at least one after-school extracurricular activity. Children are more likely to participate in sports than clubs or lessons, such as music, dance and language, but each of these activities can be beneficial to students’ development. Students who participate in extracurricular activities may want to limit their participation to 20 hours per week. baseline adjustment, extracurricular intensity was a significant predictor of positive outcomes and unrelated to indicators of problematic adjustment (e.g., psychological distress, substance use, antisocial behavior) at young adulthood. Even though extracurricular activities are largely positive - even when schedules are packed - parents need to be aware of the diminishing returns of too many activities. This is something called the “threshold effect.” Benefits from extracurriculars can level off when too many activities are being juggled. If a child is experiencing anxiety, sleeplessness or depression, or seems overly stressed, it could be time to reduce students’ time spent doing structured activities. It’s essential that families use the cues given by kids to assess what students can handle. And children should be encouraged to be honest with their parents about their extracurricular activities as well.
