Students Shine For First Day Sept. 4 marked the official start to the 20192020 school year for the Smithtown Central School District. Students throughout the district were all smiles as they entered their buildings, reconnecting with friends and settling into their new classrooms and routines. With backpacks filled
with back to school supplies, kindergarten students entered their new buildings for the first time eager to learn and looking forward to a great year ahead. The district’s newest students spent their first day unloading supplies and engaging in icebreaker activities to get to know each other.
Sixth graders and freshmen toured their new buildings during orientation days at the end of the summer, easing the fears of new schedules and lockers. As the week progressed, the students and staff settled into their routines and looked forward to a productive year ahead.

The Commack-Kings Park Rotary Club will be hosting a fun, Family Color Walk/Run to kick off fundraising for its new Protect the Bluffs Initiative. This familyoriented walk/run event will take place on Saturday, October 19, 2019 (rain date 10/20/19). Students and families will check-in between 8 AM - 9 AM and the walk/run will begin at 9:30 AM. The route will start at W.T. Rogers Middle School and proceed to the beautiful Kings Park Bluff, and then return back to W.T. Rogers for more family fun (food trucks; music; sponsor giveaways, etc.). The shoreline bluffs suffered severe erosion following a series of local storms in 2018 that actually forced Town of Smithtown officials to close the boardwalk at the Kings Park Bluff. The purpose of this local CommackKings Park Rotary Club initiative is to support Town of Smithtown repair and maintenance efforts along the shoreline to protect our bluffs, which residents visit and enjoy regularly. Specific projects would include supporting those efforts and strategies suggested by the Town’s Department
of Environment & Waterways, which have proven effective in slowing erosion. This event will also serve to bring community awareness to the issue of shoreline erosion and the Commack- Kings Park Rotary’s other local and international initiatives. Over the weekend, Suffolk County Legislator Rob Trotta stopped by to have his car washed at Brian O’Reilly’s Eagle Scout Car Wash Fundraiser in the parking lot of Outback Steakhouse in Commack. Brian is a sophomore at Smithtown High School West and a member of Boy Scout
Troop 888. He is doing a Bone Marrow Donor Drive to benefit the Gift of Lift for his Eagle Scout Project. It will be held at the Center of the Smith Haven Mall in Lake Grove on Saturday, September 21, from 11am – 4pm. Participation in the bone marrow drive is for people between the ages of 17 and 35. Jackie, a local Long Islander, was nominated to be a wish recipient by her friend at work. Jackie works at Walmart and would walk to work and assist residents at her local nursing home while she wasn’t working. Her friends wanted to make it easier for her to get around. After the wish was received, James Ciervo and Barbara Ransom of the Greater Port Jefferson Chamber of Commerce helped get Jackie a beautiful bicycle. The Twilight Wish Foundation is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization whose mission is to honor and enrich the lives of seniors through intergenerational Twilight Wish celebrations. Since the foundation’s founding in 2003, their goal has been to make the world a nicer place to age, one Twilight Wish at a time. When a Twilight Wish is granted, a senior is recognized for all that they have done throughout their lives and is shown that they are appreciated and valued. This organization truly makes a difference in the lives of seniors nationwide. Often the elderly gets overlooked or they simply can’t seem to achieve their goals on their own. This is where Twilight Wish steps in. Although their headquarters are located in Pennsylvania, the foundation has chapters located around the nation. James Ciervo, who devoted much of his life to helping seniors, created their Long Island Chapter 15 years ago. His career was in the senior health care industry for many years and he continues to help seniors through the Twilight Wish Foundation today. The process of applying to be a wish recipient is fairly simple. You can visit their website at www.twilightwish.org and click on the “Wishes” tab followed by “Request A Twilight Wish”. Sound of Music. A grant from the Suffolk County Office of Economic Development secured by Suffolk County Legislator Rob Trotta enabled the Chamber to hold this event. Many members of the Kings Park Chamber of Commerce were also sponsors and volunteered to help the night of the concert. The Town of Smithtown and Kings
Park Fire Department also contributed to the success of this event. “I congratulate the Chamber on doing a terrific job in organizing this concert and by the large turnout of people it is obvious that they appreciate it, too,” said Suffolk County Legislator Rob Trotta.
Stand Up For the Homeless The Town of Smithtown Horizons Counseling and Education Center and Youth Bureau participated in the 12th annual Stand Up for the Homeless event at Suffolk County Community College in Brentwood. Both Horizons and the Youth Bureau made significant donations to the event. The Youth Bureau donated backpacks stocked with school supplies, and Horizons donated diapers, baby wipes, and baby food. “The generosity of others was on full display and it was clear that the recipient families were extremely grateful for the goods, resources, and guidance that they received.” Matthew Neebe, Director, Drug
and Alcohol Counseling Services, Horizons Center Homeless individuals and families were provided transportation via bus from local shelters to take advantage of the resource fair. They were able to obtain donations of clothing, baby products, and backpacks with school supplies as well. Each family received important information on many vital resources, such as health insurance companies and help with obtaining public assistance. There were free mammography screenings, various healthcare services, and free haircuts. About Stand Up for the Homeless: Presented by the Suffolk County Department of
Social Services, this annual event provides homeless families and individuals with access to services from Federal, State, County and private agencies, including health and dental screenings, employment opportunities, veteran’s services, food counseling, and educational and benefit services. The mission of the Department of Social Services is to provide financial assistance and support services to eligible Suffolk County residents in a cost effective and efficient manner, simultaneously protecting the vulnerable while encouraging their independence and selfsufficiency.

The Town of Smithtown presented Christine Fitzgerald of the Smithtown Children’s Foundation with over 35 pre-filled backpacks along with additional school supplies and empty backpacks for disadvantaged local children. From Wednesday, August 21st through Tuesday, September 3rd residents and businesses dropped off extra school supplies at Town Hall, the Smithtown Parks Department and the Smithtown Highway Department buildings. Donations from staff and residents included packs of pencils, pens, crayons, rulers, spiral notebooks, erasers, folders, and glue sticks. “I’m never surprised at the generosity of our residents… the people in this Town go out of
their way to give back to those less fortunate. But I was really touched to see the details that went into filling each backpack. Every age group was well covered, from Kindergarten through High School student. I am truly grateful for every Town employee & resident who took time out of their busy schedules to help our younger generations start the school year right.” Supervisor Ed Wehrheim The donations were later delivered to the Smithtown Children’s Foundation, which then works with school social workers in Smithtown & Kings Park School Districts to distribute the supplies and backpacks to kids in need. The school districts will work to provide over 60 children in their districts with the donated school supplies.
The Foundation works to ensure less fortunate children, transient families and those dealing with loss or terminal illness can start the school year with everything they need. All eight Smithtown elected officials donated the funds to provide 24 pre-assembled backpacks. Nine pre-assembled backpacks were donated by the Smithtown Youth Bureau. A handful of residents dropped off backpacks, filled with basic supplies. Two boxes loaded with notebooks, arts & craft supplies, calculators, pens/pencils, notebooks and folders were delivered to Town Hall by the team at Daniel Gale Sotheby’s Realty. The remaining boxes of supplies were donated by the staff at Town Hall, the Parks Department, and the Highway Department.
Paper Shredding Event The Town of Smithtown Department of Environment and Waterways, in partnership with the Municipal Services Facility and the Department of Public Safety, will host the second Paper Shredding Event of the year on Saturday, September 21st. The event will be held at Town Hall on Main Street in Smithtown from 9:00 AM through 3:00 PM. “Twice a year residents can safely and securely dispose of unwanted documents while helping the environment. The process is seamlessly
orchestrated by DEW, MSF, and Public Safety. Residents get in and out fast and can go back to enjoying their weekends.” - Ed Wehrheim, Town of Smithtown Supervisor In 2018, there were a total of 341 families who came down to safely shred sensitive documents in the Summer and Fall. The Town of Smithtown collected 10.1 tons of paper, approximately 19,700 pounds, to be safely destroyed by Data Shredding Service, Inc. of Corporate Drive in Hauppauge. “I absolutely love being
a part of this event. The public is so pleased and grateful that we are providing a much needed service to local families and our environment… This year we planned the first event in April.
