Adelphi University is excited to announce its unique partnership with the Global Poverty Project and its sponsorship of the Global Citizen Festival planned for Saturday, September 28th, on the historic Great Lawn of New York’s Central Park featuring Stevie Wonder, Kings of Leon, Alicia Keys and John Mayer. The Global Citizen Festival is a celebration of the achievements made toward ending extreme poverty and providing world leaders with a clear and compelling mandate to accelerate progress on key global issues. The University, a leader in educating its students on global social justice issues, is now reaching beyond its student body to the youth of the region by offering an opportunity for teens between the ages of 13 to 17 to receive a pair of backstage VIP passes to the festival. A commitment to social justice and global issues is core to Adelphi University’s DNA. From its inception, the University has been at the forefront of global change pursuing the mission of its founder, Charles Levermore, Ph.D., who was an internationalist with ties to U.S. President Woodrow Wilson. Now, students from 44 countries, all with different economic, political and social thinking, engage on our campus to learn from our faculty and

one another. Adelphi is recognized as a United Nations nongovernmental organization (NGO) and has been named to President Barack Obama’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll. Students are encouraged to become citizens of the world through study abroad, International Studies degrees offered through the Peace Corps and the Ambassador Series Lecture events featuring speakers on issues of global impact. One individual and his or her guest will be selected to receive roundtrip ground transportation from within the New York tristate area to the Global Citizen Festival and will be accompanied by an Adelphi University chaperone. School’s Back and Soon the Flu Will be Too!! Get A Flu Shot Now! Get Vaccinated. Vaccination is the best protection against contracting the flu. Everyone 6 months of age and older should get vaccinated against the flu as soon as the 2013-2014 season vaccine is available in your area. If you do contract the flu, talk to your doctor about antivirals. Antiviral drugs are prescription medicines (pills, liquid or an inhaler) that can be used for prevention or treatment of flu viruses. If you get sick, antiviral drugs can make your illness milder and make you feel better faster. Flu Facts: • The flu is caused by a virus called influenza • Flu is a contagious illness that is spread in droplets made by people when they talk, sneeze or cough. These droplets can then infect another person when they inhale them. • Less commonly, a person might also get flu by touching an object that has the flu virus on it and then touching their own mouth, eyes or nose. • Once infected, you may pass the virus to others even about a day before you begin to have symptoms yourself. • Flu can cause a mild to severe illness and even death especially in the very young or old, pregnant woman or people with other medical illnesses (i.e.: asthma, diabetes) • The best way to prevent the flu is by getting a flu vaccine each year.

Q: What else can I do to prevent getting or spreading the flu? A: Here are some things you can do: • Get vaccinated! Ask your friends to get vaccinated. • Cover coughs and sneezes with a tissue and then throw the tissue in the garbage. • Stay away from people who are sick. • Wash your hands often with soap and water or use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer. • Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth. • If someone in the house is sick, if possible, try to keep them in a separate area. • Keep surfaces like tables, sinks, counters and toys clean by wiping them down with a household disinfectant (follow instructions on the label).

Q: If I am concerned that vaccines cause autism, what is the harm of with holding vaccines? A: Autism is also common in countries where there are no vaccines. Your child may develop severe illness which is easily vaccine - preventable. Q: Who should get the flu vaccine? A: Beginning this year with the 2012-2013 influenza season, the CDC recommends that everyone 6 months and older should get a flu vaccine each year. The single best way to prevent the flu is to get a flu vaccine each year.

Q: What are the Side Effects of the two vaccine types? A: Different side effects can be associated with the flu shot and nasal vaccine. The flu shot: You cannot get the flu from a flu shot. Some minor side effects that could occur are: Soreness, redness, or swelling at the site of injection, Low grade fever, Muscles aches .If they are going to occur at all, they begin soon after the vaccination and usually last 1 to 2 days. Almost all people who receive influenza vaccine have no problems from it. The nasal spray: The nasal-spray vaccine has weakened viruses and does not cause severe symptoms often associated with influenza illness. (In clinical studies, transmission of vaccine viruses to close contacts has occurred only rarely.) Side effects can include runny nose, wheezing, headache, Low grade fever, muscle aches, vomiting.

For each of the next three years, 50 fortunate Stony Brook students will be eligible to take advantage of the AmeriCorps Education Award, which enables them to receive a $1,175 scholarship. In return they must complete 300 hours of service work for local nonprofit organizations addressing unmet health community needs in disease prevention, health promotion and hunger initiatives. The Career Center offers the program, which is a federally funded three-year grant with support from the Office of the Vice President for Student Affairs. Students may use the scholarship to pay for education costs at any college, university, or approved post-secondary institution or school-towork program. A voucher

may also be applied to pay back qualified student loans already incurred by the students. In the process AmeriCorps members learn new skills, acquire leadership experience and gain a sense of satisfaction from positively impacting the lives of others. “The application process this year was very competitive because of the high interest in community engagement programs among higher education institutions,” said Urszula Zalewski, Assistant Director of Experiential Programs and Project Director, Stony Brook AmeriCorps Program at the Career Center. “Stony Brook University’s AmeriCorps Program has a long history of outstanding achievements, and this past success helped us receive the additional funding for the new three-

year cycle. We have 100 percent enrollment and 97-100 percent retention rates since 2004, which is a huge accomplishment.” Since 2004 the Career Center has secured $777,054 in federal dollars to support SBU students and community partners through AmeriCorps community outreach programming at Stony Brook. The Career Center reaches out to students through other departments, utilizing ZebraNet — the Community Service and Service-Learning website — to promote available positions and provide extensive details about the application process. Stony Brook students have served the following organizations: Response of Suffolk County, The Elsie Owens Health Center, Four Seasons Nursing Home,

Montefiore Hospital NYC, Oxfam America, Suffolk County Perinatal Coalition, Sunshine Prevention Center, the City Bar Justice Center, Town of Oyster Bay/G.A.P. Program, Hope House Ministries, Brooklyn Community Housing and Services, Sunrise on Wheels, and more. Participating students address community needs in health, homelessness, hunger and poverty, performing tasks such as leading community health campaigns, conducting food collections and responding to natural disasters by providing relief for victims. Game Time By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Many athletes will tell you they view each game as if it is their last – win or go home, lose and face elimination. They claim it raises the bar by creating a sense of urgency often missing day to day. In the case of the New York Yankees, the better part of the last month has had a “playoff” type atmosphere, with the team resurrecting itself from the ashes of the American League East to at least put themselves in contention

for a Wild Card berth. That’s a far cry from a few months back, when it seemed that every game brought yet another player relegated to the disabled list and a growing tally of blowout losses that were rather painful to watch. The point? For those non-Yankee fans, it just goes to show that, no matter how dire a situation may look, there is always hope. All it takes is the first step. And then the next. And the one after that. Momentum is the key to all progress. This doesn’t

mean that the outcome will necessarily turn out as hoped, but isn’t it better to make things exciting along the way? I think so. (Met fans might disagree.) In fact, most fans have simply decided that baseball season is over - time to move on to football, to be followed in short order by hockey and basketball. But not so fast – as a very famous catcher once said, “It ain’t over ‘til it’s over.” Til then, sit back and enjoy the show. It’s going to be quite a ride to the finish.

At Christopher’s Eagle Court of Honor special presentations were made by Assemblyman John Fitzpatrick, Suffolk County Legislator John Kennedy, Carol Nucci – Aid to Senator John Flanagan and Sgt. Alfano – Suffolk County Police Department 4th Precinct. The ceremony concluded by Eagle Scout Christopher Giaramita properly folding an American Flag that had been flown in his honor over the U.S. Capitol Building in Washington D.C. Christopher is currently a senior at Hauppauge High School. As in Scouting, Christopher has achieved academic success. He has received several awards, including, Advanced Placement Scholar with Distinction, High Honor Roll, and Academic Letter-2012 and 2013. He enjoys playing the Viola and is a member Select Strings Ensemble. In addition to being active in Scouts, Christopher is a member of the Tri-M Honor Society, Spanish Honor Society, and the National Honor Society. Christopher plans to attend college and major in engineering.

While only 22 Merit Badges are needed to attain the rank of Eagle Scout, Eagle Scout Giaramita earned a total of 49 Merit Badges demonstrating Scouting skills as well as civic awareness and vocational interests that may become lifelong hobbies. For his Eagle project, Christopher led, planned, developed, and supervised the construction of an 80 foot long doublesided stockade fence and a 4’x10’ concrete pad to be used as a base for air conditioning units at the American Legion Post 833 in Smithtown, New York. The project which took 215 hours was completed with the assistance of 41 volunteers. Christopher began his scouting journey to Eagle as a Cub Scout with Pack 3333 10 years ago. In March of 2007 he joined Troop 3 after earning his Arrow of Light as a Webelo Scout. As a member of Troop 3, Christopher assumed various positions of responsibility including: Patrol Leader, Den Chief, Senior Patrol Leader, Scribe and Troop Guide. Christopher continues to be active in the Troop working

Painting a home’s interior can give it a completely new look and feel. A fresh coat of paint can make a room feel more vibrant and up-todate, creating a whole new attitude within the room without breaking the bank. Whether creating an accent wall or painting each wall within a room, painting is a relatively easy and inexpensive home improvement project. But that doesn’t mean painting does not require a little prep work before the project can begin. • Address any holes or bumps on the wall. Holes or cracks in the wall will need to be patched with spackle, which then must dry before the wall can be given a new coat of paint. In addition, sand down any bumps until the walls are smooth and free of any unsightly abnormalities. • Wash the walls. Walls can get dirty, and that dirt may or may not be masked

by paint. Before adding a new coat of paint, wash the walls and inspect them for dust. Dust can collect on molding, especially in rooms that get little natural air. When dust has collected on the molding and around doorways and trim, use a damp cloth to wipe it away before adding any new paint. • Apply primer. Primer can serve many functions, not the least of which is its role as a bonding agent between the wall and the top coat of paint. Primer can also help conceal dark colors, prevent stains and increase the life expectancy of the paint job you are about to undertake. • Prepare your paint. Preparing the paint is a simple task, but one novice painters may not be aware of. When opening a new can of paint, stir the paint before using it. In addition, even if you don’t plan to use a roller when painting, do not paint straight from the can, which can be heavier

to hold than a small bowl, and a light bowl is less likely to be spilled than a potentially heavy can of paint. In addition, once paint has been removed from the can, replace the lid so dust and other impurities do not settle in the can. • Purchase painter’s tape. Painter’s tape can be especially valuable to novice painters. Painter’s tape makes it easier to paint smooth and clean paint lines, giving a room a more professional looking coat of paint without the cost of hiring a professional painter. Painting can be an inexpensive and fun way to upgrade a home’s interior. But even though painting does not require the technical know-how of more large-scale home improvement projects, it still requires some prep work and attention to detail to ensure the job is done right.

Healing Garden Visit

Suffolk County Legislator Lynne C. Nowick was invited to see the “Healing Garden” that was created at the Nissequogue River State Park in Kings Park. The garden, which was a joint effort of the Commack Kings Park Rotary and the Nissequogue River State Park Foundation, was given to the park this summer. The design was donated by Joan McGuillicudy, of The Surrogate Gardner in Northport, and the construction and labor for

the project was generously provided by St. James resident Eric Hagenbauch of Finesse Landscape Design. The garden is open to the public and there is a bench located under an old gnarled tree that Mr. Hagenbauch pruned and shaped and calls it “The Tree of Life.” Legislator Nowick said, “The “Healing Garden” is a beautiful area set in a wonderful serene spot from where you can see the Kings Park Bluff, Short Beach and the Long

Island Sound. This is why land preservation is so important. I applaud the efforts of the members of the Nissequogue River State Park Foundation for advocating for the creation and preservation of the park, as well as the Commack Kings Park Rotary for bringing the idea of the “healing garden” to fruition, which benefits local residents and all visitors to the park.”

Suffolk County Legislator Lynne C. Nowick was honored to be invited to attend the memorial service for responders who have died and will continue to die from illnesses developed while working at Ground Zero after the September 11th attacks on the World Trade Center. According to John Feal, president and founder of the FealGood foundation, “This is the only responders’ park in the nation dedicated to honor those who have died from illnesses related to

working at Ground Zero.” The park is located at the intersection of Gibbs Pond Road and Smithtown Boulevard in Nesconset. Tips For Tree Maintenance Many homeowners may not know that pruning trees in the winter can benefit some trees. Deciduous trees are dormant in winter, so they won’t bleed sap when pruned at this time of year like they will at other times of year. In addition, many varieties of trees are less likely to attract disease or insects if pruned in the winter. Oak trees, for example, emit a strong odor when pruned,

and that odor can attract a type of beetle that causes oak wilt. But this type of beetle hibernates in the winter, making this the ideal season to prune oak trees. Before pruning trees, regardless of the time of year, homeowners should learn the types of trees on their property and when the ideal pruning season is for each type of tree. Pruning also may depend

on climate, so speak with a local gardening or landscaping professional to determine when is the best time to prune the trees on your property. Once the time has come to prune, keep the following tips in mind to maintain healthy and aesthetically appealing trees. • Remove limbs that appear to be competing for space. Tree limbs that

are crossing, rubbing or growing parallel to one another can be pruned. Such limbs may prohibit the growth of nearby limbs. • Remove limbs that are growing in. Some tree limbs may appear to be growing toward the interior of the tree, and these limbs can be pruned. • Remove limbs growing toward the ground. A healthy tree’s limbs will grow outward, not toward

the ground. • Remove dead limbs. Dead limbs simply take up space, and a dead limb is not going to grow back come the spring. Dead, broken or diseased limbs should be removed when pruning. • Do not top trees. Tree topping is the removal of large branches and/ or trunks from the top of a tree. Topping leaves a tree susceptible to disease

and insect infestation, and homeowners who top trees to prevent them from getting any larger should know that topping actually promotes the growth of smaller, weaker branches that eventually grow as tall, if not taller, than the original branches before the tree was topped. Topping also decreases a tree’s life expectancy.

Winterizing Your Lawn Every weekend of the last few months you have spent mowing, weeding, edging, and trimming your lawn so that it will look its best. In order to ensure your lawn makes a complete recovery after winter hibernation, you may want to spend the fall taking steps to help your lawn survive the winter months ahead. Winterizing a lawn varies depending on where you live and how harsh a typical winter is. There are certain key tasks to complete before you can rest for the winter season. • Remove fallen leaves and debris. Leaf cleanup is among the tasks homeowners dread the most. Raking leaves can be arduous, but it is well worth the effort. Fallen leaves can smother the grass and lead to dead spots and decay next season. Wait until the majority of the leaves have fallen from the trees before you begin to rake; otherwise, you could find yourself repeating the process throughout the fall. Mulched leaves can be added in small amounts to garden beds to provide rich organic material for next year’s crop of flowers. Be sure to pick up any twigs and other debris as well.

Additional debris can become up trapped under snow and hinder grass growth when spring arrives. • Cut your lawn short. Unless the season is unseasonably wet and warm, your lawn shouldn’t grow too much in October and November. Continue to cut your lawn until there is no visible growth for about two weeks. It pays to give it a short cut before frost arrives so that long piles of dead grass will not smother any new growth in the spring. Also, long grass tends to bend down upon itself, trapping moisture that can lead to fungal diseases like snow mold. • Aerate the lawn. Soil can be compacted over time, especially in yards that see heavy foot traffic. You can rent an aerator from a lawn supply store so that water and fertilizer can reach the soil. • Fertilize. Now is the time to give the lawn fresh food to overwinter and also replenish the strength of the root system. All summer long the lawn has been depleting the soil of nutrition, but autumn presents a great opportunity to strengthen those roots. Consider a slow-release formula designed for winterizing that will

feed the lawn all winter long. • Edge the garden beds. Take advantage of the cooler weather and slow-growing grass to re-edge around flower beds. Even though the grass above the surface of the soil will stop growing, the roots will remain viable and the lawn will still be sending out rhizomes and tillers to produce new grass blades in the spring. These can easily encroach on garden beds. Edge now so you will have less work to do in the spring. • Trim hedges and trees. If there are any overhanging tree branches or shrubbery blocking sunlight from reaching the lawn, cut back these areas once the foliage has thinned. Take advantage of your town’s leaf and twig pickup services. • Seed bare patches. Scour the lawn for bare patches and put down some seed in these areas. The cooler weather will enable the seeds to germinate without having to compete with weed growth. Once you have prepared your lawn for the winter you can bring in any lawn tools that need repair and have them set and packed away for the spring.

Changing seasons can be tough on a lawn. Always exposed to the elements, lawns can fare especially poorly upon the arrival of winter, a season known for its harsh and unforgiving weather. Even the most perfectly manicured lawn can suffer at the hands of winter weather, causing homeowners to sit idly by and hope spring arrives that much sooner. But as punishing as winter weather can be on a lawn, homeowners are not without recourse. Much like homeowners can take steps to help their lawns survive sizzling summer heat waves during the warmer months of the year, they also can take steps to help their lawns make it

through the often stormy weather synonymous with winter. • Don’t procrastinate. Putting off the process of winterizing a lawn can put that lawn in jeopardy. Lawns will turn dormant the closer you get to winter, and they may reject the nutrients found in fertilizer as a result. Those nutrients will prove valuable once spring weather returns, so start the winterization process in early fall so the lawn has sufficient time to absorb nutrients and strengthen itself for the seasons to come. • Treat trouble spots. Summer can be even harder on a lawn than winter, especially for those lawns located in regions

where heat waves and drought are common. In such instances, certain spots on the lawn seem to be hit harder than others, and those spots should get special attention when winterizing the lawn. Check the soil’s pH levels before fertilizing or applying any treatments. Such a test will reveal which spots need the most attention, and treating trouble spots now will make spring lawn care that much easier. • Aerate the property. Aerating can help a lawn recover after a long summer and help it survive the potentially harsh months that lie ahead. Aerating, which involves puncturing the soil or removing cores of soil from the ground, can

restore a lawn to health by improving its drainage and allowing more water and air to reach the roots of the grass. Aerating also makes it easier for nutrients to penetrate the soil, which encourages a healthier lawn over the long haul. Aerators can be purchased or rented, but homeowners uncomfortable with the process may want to enlist a professional to tackle the job. Parents of small children who spend lots of time in the yard may need to aerate their lawn more than most, as heavy lawn traffic compresses the soil, a potentially harmful process that can be reversed via aeration. • Take steps to strengthen the roots. Aerating

promotes stronger roots, but homeowners might also want to find a winterizing product with potassium and phosphorous, both of which can strengthen roots. Different types of lawns will respond differently to certain winterizers, so discuss your options with a lawn care professional who can help you find the right fit for your property. • Remove debris from the lawn. Piles of debris left scattered around a lawn can suffocate the blades of grass, leading to long-term damage and a potentially unsightly lawn come the spring. organisms that can damage the lawn. As fall moves into winter, periodically remove all debris, including leaves and branches fallen from trees. • Make the lawn off-limits once the temperatures dip below freezing. A lawn should be off-limits once the ground freezes. Stepping on grass that has frozen will leave noticeable footprints, and walking on frozen grass can kill the turf. When winter arrives, people should avoid using the lawn as a shortcut into and out of your home and stick to driveways and sidewalks instead.
